WORKSHOP
Color Spot Oil Painting
ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED
Color spot oil painting is a method of direct painting
developed in the early decades of the twentieth century by
Charles Hawthorne and later by his student and assistant,
Edwin Dickinson. Although aspects of color spot painting
go all the way back to Baroque painting, Hawthorne and
Dickinson were the first to organize entire canvases and
elaborate compositions by means of the color spot. A color
spot is a piece of color, large or small, that has been observed
and abstracted from the appearance of nature and applied
directly to the white canvas in discrete notes. Color spot
painting is as direct a method as exists — you aim to hit the
mark right at first, and not go back (or go back as little as
possible) so as not to destroy the integrity of the network of
spots. This workshop will provide an intensive introduction to
color spot painting, emphasizing the role of the viewfinder,
the plumb line, the relationship between the object and its
environment, and how to set-up the initial key of the painting.
Friday–Sunday, Feb 22–24 | 10AM–4PM
$350 per person
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
We're a community of artists…
Our faculty is dedicated to creating an inclusive and engaging
environment where everyone is welcome to share their love of art.
That's why we offer free, evening workshops at eight different library
branches as part of Denver Public Library's Plaza Program, a series
specifically tailored to meet the needs of immigrant, refugee and asylee
populations to build Denver's successful global community.
Visit ASLD.org/about/community-engagement to see a full list of our
community engagement programs.
“The quality of artists and programs that ASLD brings
to the Montbello branch is high-class. Our kids, tweens
and teens get to see great art made by great artists. It
opens their eyes and their world to what art can truly
be and to the possibility of making money as artists
themselves.”
SHELLEY SCHREIBER
ABILITY: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE
After taking ASLD's introductory wheel throwing workshop,
you will continue to learn the basics of wheel throwing
while establishing good technique and gaining skills that
will give you the foundation for making functional ceramic
Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting
ALI ALZOBAEDE
ABILITY: BEGINNER
This workshop is designed for students to improve their
drawing skills in order for them to create beautiful paintings.
Students will learn academic drawing and painting techniques
of the old masters. Drawing demos and lessons in this
workshop will focus on the most important elements you
will need to create successful oil paintings. First half of
this workshop will focus on drawing and the last half will
concentrate on transferring your drawing into an oil painting.
You will learn the secrets of the old masters and gain relevant
skills to aid you in improving your drawing and paintings skills.
Wednesdays, Feb 27–Apr 17 | 9AM–12PM
Sketch Painting
ALI ALZOBAEDE
ABILITY: BEGINNER
Alla prima is a painting technique, used mostly in oil painting, in
which layers of wet paint are added to previously applied layers
of wet paint. Capturing the figure believably in oil paint can
be a difficult task, but doing it in one sitting may seem almost
impossible. Yet this is exactly what we will be doing in this
workshop. You will embark on the journey of learning about oil
paint and practicing accurate color mixing, values, and forms of
the model to help develop your ability to paint “alla prima.”
Wednesdays, Apr 24–May 29 | 9AM–12PM
Ink Resist Technique on Canvas
SA BENNETT
ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED
Learn a new painting technique with textures and drama using
with acrylic to produce transparent color which can be layered.
The total effect is brilliant colors balanced with deep black.
Sculpting With Color
CHUCK CERASO
ABILITY: ALL
This is an unusual approach to painting, in that it's more
akin to sculpting with colored shapes in order to capture the
effects of form, light and atmosphere. You will learn how to
hone color perception and notice the umbrella of light (Monet's
term) that everything sits in. You will learn a way of using your
eyes that allows this perception to develop, as well as learn
a way of applying paint or pastel so as to find these colors in
your pigments. Primarily through the study of simple still life
setups, you will learn a new language, one based in real world
sensations of color that will give you a much broader facility
with color and shape in whatever way of painting suits you.
ABILITY: ALL
Color Charts: A Practical Beginning
to Understanding Color
EMEKA COOK
ABILITY: ALL
Learning to make color charts is a great way to gain some
concrete, practical information for understanding and mixing
color. Students will learn about color harmony, how white
paint changes color mixtures, what happens to colors in the
mid-tone range, the tonal relationship of color, why doing the
charts make it easier to replicate colors from life, practice
self-control and more. We will start with group questions and
discussion about basic color information, then we will dive in
to making the color charts.
Abstract Expressionist Painting:
The Language of Form, Voice of Materials
JEFF WENZEL
ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED, PROFESSIONAL
This class aims to reinvigorate and enrich one's painting
process through incorporation of new methodologies that
focus on creative freedom, intuitive improvisation and
discovery. Abstract expressionism necessitates two
stepping stones of creativity: an alternation between
purposefulness and freedom. In addition to the rigor of
thoughtful, critical deliberation, one has to have the faith
and willingness to let go and let things happen, to allow
intuition to lead and let one's hands do the thinking.
Our quest is for novel, revelatory paintings.
I took on a leadership role because I spent
so much time here and it's helped me a lot
with my art. I wanted to give back and this
was a way to do that and build community.”
