TRAVEL guide Thailand: In Part 2, Christina explores the Elephant Hills & Phuket Having just returned from Thailand for the second time in four weeks, I thought it best to write this article on the rest of my experiences in this beautiful country. My second trip was with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul as they fly direct to Phuket, with the lowest Business Class fares in the industry. I spent the second half of my trip in Phuket so flying home from there was a real bonus. I went, initially, to Bangkok again and visited the reclining Buddha and the Grand Palace where on this occasion I was given a blessing by a monk! After a whistle stop tour of Bangkok which included several hotel visits and an evening at the Sky Bar, we flew to Phuket and had a twohour drive north to the Jungle and Elephant Hills. This was the highlight of my trip; we spent two nights and three days here staying in a luxury tent. Our first day was spent with the elephants in their jungle sanctuary. The elephants are free to roam the area and we were able to wash and feed them. It was a wonderful experience and you can spend as much time with these amazing creatures as you wish. Afterwards, we were taken on a canoe trip down the river which was a beautifully peaceful experience. The evenings at Elephant Hills are quiet, with local school children showing off their Thai dancing skills as well as a cooking demonstration, and then dinner with all of the other explorers. After a surprisingly good night’s sleep, we spent the second day trekking in the jungle which was fantastic, cooking on a barbeque in the Jungle followed, by a longtail boat trip and kayaking around the Lake Camp. This is also part of Elephant Hills where customers can spend the night in a tent on the lake. Leaving Elephant Hills, we made our way down to Phuket for hotel visits and to see the area. We viewed some stunning hotels and interestingly, saw many villas suitable for family groups from 4 to 16 people.
