Information (Design) Is Power<br />

Also in New York City, the Community Mapping Assistance Project<br />

(www.cmap.nypirg.org/) produces a different kind of graphic design for advocacy.<br />

CMAP works with local groups to use information design and mapping in their<br />

campaigns for social justice. Steven Romalewski started with the New York Public<br />

Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) as a student in 1984 and has been involved ever<br />

since. He began using design for an environmental campaign that mapped toxic sites<br />

on Long Island. After a few years he considered starting a project to provide mapping<br />

services to other nonprofits. With Marty DeBenedictis he launched CMAP. The project<br />

now has six full-time staff.<br />
