New Year's Eve Fireworks
USE COMMON SENSE & BE CONSIDERATE!
One of our traditional fireworks holidays is approaching. Please be considerate of your neighbors while enjoying the tradition of fireworks on New
Years’ Eve. Don’t use people, cars or houses as targets for bottle rockets and roman candles. It would be tragic to cause injury or damage on this
exciting holiday.
Please consider the following:
• Please don’t direct any fireworks at anything or anyone.
• Please don’t shoot fireworks off before 9 AM or after 10 PM on any day, (except New Year’s Eve: try to finish by no later than 1 AM).
• Avoid shooting fireworks that shoot up or fly through the air (especially in a dry season).
• If a car comes down the street, get out of its way and do not light any fireworks while it is passing.
• Don’t make the “fireworks holiday” turn into a month of fireworks. Often frightened pets must be taken inside while the fireworks are going off.
MOST IMPORTANT: Clean up the mess! Sweep the streets and drives (don’t forget to pick up the items that accidentally went into your neighbor’s yard).
If you have a problem with someone that is shooting off the fireworks, please call the your law enforcement’s office and ask for an officer to come by.
Harris County Animal
Control Services
IF YOU HAVE A DOG OR CAT PROBLEM:
Harris County Public Health: 281-999-3191
City of Houston Animal Control: 713-837-0311
Houston S.P.C.A.: 713-869-7722
Harris County Animal Services does not handle wildlife issues. They
handle problems with domestic animals, namely dogs and cats. If you
have a complaint about a barking dog or a dangerous dog or have any
questions about lost pets, stray cats, pet adoptions, leash laws, etc, give
the county a call. It is a free county service for domestic animal issues. The
county will not take care of the raccoon in your yard, the squirrels in your
attic, your rat infestation or anything like that. For wildlife help, see our
phone number below or go to our Houston wildlife removal home page.
What to do when your neighbor’s dog won’t stop barking in Houston - Is
your neighbor’s dog keeping you up at all hours of the night and day with
its incessant barking? There is nothing worse, especially when you or
your kids are trying to sleep! Perhaps the dog barking is setting off your
dog and all you can hear all day is a chorus of bad barking? Whatever
the case is - you have rights and there are some steps that you should
take in order to get the barking to stop. You will probably want to avoid
actually confronting the neighbor as this can often end up in a rather
heated debate. You should write or type up a small note mentioning
the dog barking - nine times out of ten, the owner will be at work and
probably doesn’t even realize what is going on. Make it short, to the
point and polite - exactly how you would want someone to talk to you if
your dog was making a crazy racket! If nothing happens or the letter isn’t
in some way acknowledged you can always turn to your local housing
organization or landlord if you are renting. There will normally be noise
stipulations in rental agreements, so it is well worth finding out if your
neighbors are renting and getting in touch with their landlord as well.
You will find that most residential areas have noise control rules set
in place, so don’t be afraid to find out what your rights are. If nothing
happens from your complaint to the owner of the dog and the housing
organization, (or neither of you are renting) it’s time to take a different
approach. This time, grab some information on the noise control in
your area and print them out. Combine this in a neat little package
with another letter, basically saying exactly what the first one did, but
this time mentioning that this is the second time that you have tried to
contact them about the complaint and that you will be taking the matter
further if nothing is resolved. Again, do not be threatening or menacing
in your words or language. If you still don’t get a positive outcome from
your effort, it’s time to call the boys in blue. You will need to remember
that a dog barking situation is not always going to be a priority for your
local law enforcement agency, buy you do still have rights so you should
report the complaint. Make yourself a log of everything that has been
going on -photos or noise clips of the dog barking, times and dates and
also how long the barking goes on for, all copies of the correspondence
you have with the owner/neighbor etc. You will need all the evidence that
you can get your hands on in order to get your problem resolved. Get
yourself a lawyer. There are ways around this problem and if it comes to
resorting to a small claims court in order to allow your kids or yourself to
get a good night’s sleep or a nap, so be it!
Community Events
Green Trails II hosts many community-wide events throughout the year
such as, Snow Day, Easter Egg Hunt, 4 th of July Parade and Pool Party and
Fall Festival. If you interested in helping out with any of these fun events or
have ideas for new events, please contact our GT II Community Events Chair
- Pamela Weatherall @ pboxx@sbcglobal.net. We’d love to hear from you!
to volunteer for our GTHOA committees to support these efforts.
and commitment to the community. Our volunteers are tremendous people
that utilize their personal time to develop and grow our great community.
committees depend on volunteers from our neighborhood to continue to
keep our neighborhood strong and beautiful and these committees need
the help and support from all of our residents. GTHOA has a need for your
help with the local committees in the following areas:
Community Events: There are several community events throughout
the year that are organized and operated by our volunteers. GT has had
great success with these events but need your help with future events. In
additional to event organizers, volunteers are also needed to help with
smaller tasks prior to each event or help on the day of the event. The
Pool: Green Trails Phase II has two pools located at the Gerri Ayers
Recreation Center and the Park Cypress Recreation Center that need
volunteers to monitor and inspect the pool grounds, pool furniture, pool
party schedules, etc.
Parks: Green Trails Phase II has six parks listed below that are beautiful and
vibrant. The park volunteers are needed to monitor the playground equipment,
grounds, splash pads, water fountains and garbage canisters and also help
with budget planning and reporting maintenance needs. The pools and tennis
courts in these parks are monitored separately from Park volunteers, however,
we encourage all residents to “see something, say something.”
• Gerri Ayers Recreation Center - Park monitor needed.
• Crescent Green Pocket Park - Park monitor needed.
• Wisdom Woods Park - Park monitor needed.
• Park Cypress Recreation Center - Park monitor needed.
Landscape: The landscape committee volunteers continue to keep our
community beautiful. This is by far the largest committee within our
community, which requires a great number of volunteers and support. There
are several sub committees within the landscape committee and volunteers
are needed to continue the success of this great committee. The areas of need
are many but to name a few: budget planning, trees, pruning and flowers.
Finance: The finance committee ensures that the GTHOA finances are
being utilized wisely. The committee reviews the monthly financial
statements prepared by the management company and submits any
questions to the Board liaison. In addition, the committee reviews the
annual audit and is involved with both budget and investment planning.
If you have experience or just an interest in these areas, the finance
committee can always use more help!
Beautification: GTHOA has motivated the local MUD to develop a
beautification plan for the I-10 intersections at Fry Rd., Greenhouse,
and Barker Cypress. This committee is in search of a committee chair,
area monitors budget planning, MUD liaison, landscape oversight
and landscape planning. The volunteers are needed to help monitor
these areas, plan budgets, future landscape plans, communicate with
the landscape contractor, communicate with the MUD and continue
the success of keeping these areas beautiful. These intersections are
the grand entrances into our community and the first points of sight
that our neighbors, friends and relatives encounter when entering the
neighborhood.
Communication: The Green Trails Phase II website and official Facebook page
are in need of a communications director. The director will monitor the website
to ensure official information has been posted when needed and facilitate
communications for the official Facebook page. The director will communicate
with the management company to post neighborhood information for our
residents. This is a great communication tool for our residents to receive
quality information about our neighborhood. The communication director is
needed in this area ensure this quality of information.
Beginning with our September 6 th GTHOA Board meeting, the Board began
the 2019 budget process. The GTHOA Board will look to our volunteers for
ideas, support and planning for this budget season process. Volunteering
is a great way to introduce ideas into our community and ensure a
successful planning process to keep our community alive and vibrant.
Mosquito Control
Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito
Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program
includes removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these
problem areas:
1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths which can hold
dampness or water
2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters
3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles
around house.
4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes
after watering, you are over watering.
5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray
under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain.
Plastic under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.
Doggie Don’ts
Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up
after your pets. We thank you! HOWEVER - We have received reports of
dog owners allowing their dogs to defecate and urinate in yards. This is
especially a problem in high-traffic areas near park entrances. Be aware
that it is not just your dog. Once a yard has been “used,” other dogs want
to do so as well. A resident should not have to pick up after even one
dog, much less ten. In addition, runners and walkers in our parks don’t
enjoy dodging excrement. Please carry a bag and pick up after your pet.
Remember also, that even the sweetest dog may seem intimidating to
some people. Respect their rights and comply with leash laws.
Trash Pickup Reminder
This is a reminder that Green Trails offers back door trash pickup. Please
put your household garbage in front of your garage door for pickup
outside of the breezeway fence. Heavy trash and recyclables must be
taken to the curb for pickup.
Do Not Put Trash Out the Night Before Pickup
Please put your trash out the morning of trash pickup. If you put your
trash out the night before trash pickup this allows cats and other animals
to be able to get into your trash causing a mess on the street for the trash
collection workers or yourself to deal with.
Home Improvement Reminder
Remember, ALL exterior changes made to your home or yard [including your fence]
require Architectural Review Committee approval first. In need of an Exterior
Modification Request form? Go to www.greentrailstwo.com our neighborhood website.
No Call is Too Small
Call the Constable to report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch
for Green Trails is via their direct line at 281-463-6666. If something
“doesn’t seem right,” don’t wait to be sure. Trust your intuition, call it in
and let them decide. You are our best defense.
Remove Valuables, Lock Cars
Thanks to a resident’s timely call, the constables made an arrest in
connection to car burglaries. However we need to continue common sense
security practices. Note that 90% of the car burglaries in the neighborhood
were of unlocked cars. Lock your cars and remove valuables. Report any
burglaries, even if only items of minimal value were taken.
There is a timer switch on the Crescent Green courts on the south side of court
1. The timer has a button, which cycles through 15, 30, 45, 60 & 120 minutes
and OFF. The lights on the pole on the south side between courts 1 and 2 will
act as a safety light. On the Park Cypress court, there is a timer switch on the
light pole as you enter.
COURT RESERVATIONS
Court Reservation signup sheets are posted on the bulletin boards at both
the Crescent Green and Park Cypress courts. Residents must use last names
only. Residents may reserve a court no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1
1/2 hour time period only by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the signup
sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes). If your match extends beyond your
reserved time period and no one else is waiting to use the court, you are free
to continue playing. These rules are posted on the bulletin boards and are
designed to allow maximum court usage for all residents.
during prime time on the Crescent Green courts. Multiple balls lying on the
courts is a safety hazard for others using the courts. Prime hours are every day,
Katy Isd Announces Screening Deadline
For Gifted & Talented Students
Katy ISD students in grades 1-4 and 6-11 can be referred for screening
for the 2019-2020 gifted and talented program. Parents must complete
a Parent Checklist which can be obtained from the student’s school or
from the Katy ISD website.
The deadline for completing and returning the Parent Checklist is
December 5, 2018. Checklists which are not returned by the deadline
will not be screened for service for the 2019-2020 school year. The
State of Texas requires that various types of measures be used to
identify students for gifted programs which includes observations and
standardized tests. The program for elementary students consists of a
one-day pullout in the Challenge classroom with a teacher trained in
gifted education. Secondary GT students are clustered and served in
Pre AP and AP classes. Transfer students who were screened in Fall 2018
must wait one full academic year before they can be rescreened. Parents
may contact campus counselors, elementary Challenge teachers or G/T
facilitators if they have additional questions. They can visit the Katy ISD
GT and Advanced Academics webpage for more information.
Katy ISD’S Partners In
Education Kicks Off 17Th Annual
Food For Families Campaign
Katy ISD’s Partners in Education is inviting the community to support
families in need this holiday season. Food for Families is an annual
campaign that provides grocery gift cards to Katy ISD students and their
families. Every Katy ISD campus identifies students in need of assistance
and gift cards are given to those students before winter break. Last year,
Food for Families helped 676 families. Since its inception in 2002, this
initiative has raised over $190,000 helping over 4,000 families have a
happier holiday. Donations of any amount are welcome and appreciated.
Those interested in helping a Katy ISD family in need this holiday season,
should donate by December 7 th . Contributions are accepted online or via
check, remitted to “Katy ISD Food for Families” and mailed to Partners
in Education, Katy ISD ESC, 6301 South Stadium Lane, Katy 77494. Food
for Families, a Katy ISD Partners in Education yearly initiative, unites
our Katy ISD staff and community in holiday support for select students
and their families. To learn more, visit Partners in Education under the
“BEHOLD, A SAVIOR!” Sunday, December 9 th
“Behold, a Savior!” is a portrait of a promise and a portrait of the
fulfillment of that promise. Throughout this musical, Jay Rouse and Rose
Aspinall skillfully weave scripture and dramatic first-hand accounts of the
birth of Jesus into beloved carols and original songs. Each monologue
and song will take you on a journey from the longing of Zechariah, the
joy and acceptance of Mary and the courage of Joseph to the accounts
of the shepherds and wise men. . Let us inspire and prepare you for the
celebration of the birth of our Lord with both familiar Christmas carols
and newly-composed pieces at 8, 9:15 and 11 AM in the church sanctuary.
The musical presentation will feature the Living Word Choir accompanied
by a chamber orchestra.
Foster Children:
Preparation For Adult Living
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure
out how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole
month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program
to help prepare for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL).
The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by
the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at
Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by
local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs that
help change lives with hands-on community service? Contact info@
Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting
seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering,
Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are age
commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you
want to drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker
Cypress, north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at
the Grand Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity
to help seniors retain independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers
tell us the day(s) and times they are able to drive. Drivers choose if
they wait for the senior or return later to pick them up. Drivers must be
between 21 years of age and 78 years of age with a good driving record,
pass a background check and show proof of insurance coverage (state
minimums) as required by the State of Texas. To request a volunteer driver
application, call 832-773-8645 or email info@karskaty.org. KARS operates
under an official 501(c)(3) that designates it as a transportation service
Gardening
Tips
• If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent
beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or
a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.
• Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.
• Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after
they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed
meal and manure.
• Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather
damage. May acidify again.
• Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties
of lilies. Mulch.
• Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.
• Don’t forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of
water than lack of food.
