STILL HARBOR
ELEVATING
SPIRITUALITY
TO CREATE A
MORE KIND,
EQUITABLE, &
SUSTAINABLE
WORLD.

A COLLECTIVE
LEADERSHIP MODEL
PERRY MONIQUE LAUREN
In 2018, Still Harbor established a collective leadership structure. We
aim to bring the values of collective leadership into all that we do. From
trusting that our clients are experts in their own spiritual journeys to
training others who can carry the mantle of spiritual leadership for
social change into their own communities and organizations, we are
clear that both spiritual and social transformation requires us all to
accompany one another as equals.

WE ARE
CREATING
A NETWORK
OF FIERCELY
LOVING &
COMPASSIONATE
SPIRITUAL
LEADERS FOR
SOCIAL CHANGE.

WHY WE DO
THIS WORK
“Turbulent times create waves of stress,
anxiety, and uncertainty. What often gets
lost in the jumble is the deep, internal
human yearnings for connection, belonging,
peace, and justice. We all need to feel
connected to something bigger than ourselves.
When we resolve to be the change we wish to
see in the world, we become like a stone
thrown into a pond - creating ripples that
stretch beyond the point of impact.”
- Rev. Monique Harris, Senior Partner

“We cannot ignore or avoid suffering people
and expect the causes and impact of their
suffering will disappear. It lives on. Some
might say it infects our relationships,
communities, workplaces, cultures, and
societies. And therefore it is up to us to
find ways to promote healing and liberation
in our relationships, communities,
workplaces, cultures, and societies.”
- Rev. Perry Dougherty, Senior Partner
“Connection has the remarkable capacity to
transform our perception of ourselves, of
others, and of the greater web of humanity
in which we all share a part. In the truest
sense of the word, connection shows up in
many different shapes, sizes, and forms.
Yet when we conceive of connection in our
culture, we tend to focus the discourse
around deeply woven, long-term relationships
grounded in history and loyalty. In my
experience, however, it is often the many
moments of connection that have been just
that — moments, fleeting in nature — that
truly illuminate and, therefore, hold the
capacity to transform our perception.”
- Lauren Spahn, Senior Partner

WE ARE PART OF
A MOVEMENT
“We are arriving at the truth that
it takes immense interior work to
meaningfully impact the systems
of oppression and inequity that
both surround us and reside within
us; a reality that holds true for
individuals, communities, and
organizations committed to being
agents of change.”
- Lauren Spahn, Senior Partner

Our collective quest for justice and peace cannot be
accomplished by intellectual or professional training alone.
We each need an operative spirituality to support us in
cultivating the imagination, courage, and resilience needed
to create a more kind, equitable, and sustainable world.
We consider ourselves part of a growing 21st-century
movement that is drawing on the world’s long history of
contemplative practices from across wisdom traditions.
Such practices form the foundation of what we all need
to create spaces that encourage personal and collective
exploration of identity, belief, purpose, values, connection,
presence, and trust.

“My Spiritual Director has
helped me find the strength to
stay grounded in my truth –
which is to fight against the
injustices and inequalities
around me from a place of
love and compassion. With
each spiritual accompaniment
session, I am learning how
to navigate experiences
of personal and communal
discrimination as well as
how to fight for humanity
with unconditional love,
a clear mind, and an open
heart. Ultimately, our
spiritual health as a
society – something that is
so immensely underinvested
in – is the foundation for
how we interact with each
other, and in my case, is
how I navigate my work and
the world around me. I’m so
grateful to have access to
this resource. It has truly
been transformative.”
SPIRITUAL DIRECTION PRACTICUM
GROUP FACILITATION IMMERSION

“It is no surprise that a path
of contemplative and spiritual
deepening, of opening to complex
and intimate relationships in
community, and of building power and
strategizing about disrupting violent
systemic and societal norms raises
complex and deep questions about
identity, spirituality, despair,
hope, and meaning. My hope in joining
the Practicum was to become better
equipped to hold space for these
questions, challenges, and insights.
For me, the Spiritual Direction
Practicum was a welcome learning
community among whom I could ask
questions about and thoughtfully
engage with the craft of loving
spiritual accompaniment. Every
month, in the retreat-like gathering
days, I was able to both deepen
in my own articulation of what
spiritual direction means to me and
to interrogate how to better support
the emergence of my directees’ own
wisdom.”
“I believe that all
people deserve the
opportunity to work
toward their highest
purpose. Together, let us
remove the hindrances and
obstacles to creating a
more just society.”
SCHOLARSHIP
FUND
In 2018, Still Harbor formally launched a scholarship fund,
dedicated specifically to enabling people from all backgrounds
and financial means to access our services and programs. Year
upon year, we give away more in scholarships than we earn
in fees and tuition. Our scholarships allow us to serve those
actively engaged in the front lines of social change.
We have established a goal of raising $80,000 in scholarship
funds each year with $40,000 going to participants in our
explore programs (spiritual accompaniment, affinity circles, and
retreats) and with $40,000 going to participants in our training
programs (spiritual direction practicum and group facilitation
immersion). The more scholarship funds we have, the more
people we are able to serve and to train.
“Thank you so much for your
support of this work! As
a queer person of color
connected to organizing
and social movements, I
have worked with countless
folks on the front lines in
this country asking similar
questions: How do we win? Can
this work be sustainable?
How can my spirit be held in
community and in relationship
to the Divine?
In choosing to support Still
Harbor, you back someone like
me, who can choose to hold
space for these activists,
artists, visionaries, and
modern day prophets. With the
onslaught of institutional
violence, I am clear that
spiritual accompaniment is
a critical component to the
movement away from fear and
towards love.”
- Yani Burgos, Practicum
Student

Our commitment is grounded in your support of the
spiritual formation that sustains and enriches social justice
work and in your faith in each of us.
THANK YOU.

“Over the years, I’ve discovered
that the place in our lives where
spirituality and social justice meet
is the very place that reveals,
cultivates, and sustains love. At the
most fundamental level, I believe
that Still Harbor does the work of
love. I’ve learned that if I tap into
the place within me that believes in
our shared human dignity and in our
deep desire to connect, to be seen,
to be cherished, I can see clearly
the way of love. And it is with
this vision, that I offer spiritual
accompaniment for activists and
social justice leaders and that I
train others to do the same.”
