Those present were entertained by Peter Boyd’s piping and by Alan Watt who proposed an “Immortal Memory of a Curry” and enjoyed a choice of curries prepared by the Shimla Cottage. Funds raised totalled £900 and have been donated to the Rotary “END POLIO NOW”. FUTURE EVENTS - Speaker Meetings: • Wednesday 12th December – Sarah Mitchell of St Vincent’s Hospice, guest of Derek Porter • Youth Speaks: the intermediate schools competition will be held at St Columba’s at 7pm on 4th December • Santa’s Sleigh: Rotary members will be accompanying Santa’s Sleigh on 6th December in Houston and 9th December in Brookfield and raising funds to support Young Carers. • Christmas dinner with wives and partners: Wednesday 19th December at the River Inn Burns Supper – Saturday 12th January 2019 The venue (the River Inn) is booked and speakers arranged for the first major social fund-raiser event of the New Year. Young Carers: Rotary are once again supporting “thank you” nights out for Young Carers on 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st January 2019 to The Experience at Hillington for Electric Go-Karting, Laser Tag, and an American buffet. Gryffe Valley Rotary 10K Run –Sunday 19th May 2019 The 2019 date of the run has been moved by one month to the middle of May. Please save the date and plan your training. A main sponsor has been identified and local sports clubs and groups are being encouraged to enter teams. GVRC Speaker: Becky Haldane – “The Sailors Society” Becky was brought up in Houston and gained a degree in divinity at the University of Glasgow. After a number of years working abroad (as a pastor, disaster relief worker and associate director of the charity Compassion First) Becky has recently returned to Scotland and been appointed Public Engagement Officer for the Sailors Society Scotland. Sailors’ Society is an international Christian charity, founded 200 years ago, that works in ports around the world, helping seafarers and their families of all faiths and none with welfare and practical support. Becky encouraged members to share knowledge of the Sailors Society and perhaps offer support by financial donations or by purchasing BySea ethically sourced coffee via their website (www.sailors-society. org). The society depends on raising £5m/annum and helps 400,000 sailors in a typical year. The Crisis Response Network has already helped 100 sailors. Provost’s Community Awards The stars in Renfrewshire’s communities are set to be honoured once again this year and the long-standing sponsors of the awards have shown their support once more. Glasgow Airport Ltd, ACRE Industrial, UNISON Renfrewshire and the Piazza Shopping Centre have committed yet again to sponsoring one of the awards which aims to recognise the unsung heroes of Renfrewshire. Nominations for the 2019 awards are now open and will see six individuals or groups celebrated for their hard work and dedication within Renfrewshire. Councillor John Shaw, Finance Convener for Renfrewshire Council, is reinforcing the message during Talk Money Week, the national awareness week that focuses on avoiding debt, money worries and financial harm. Councillor Shaw said: “If something doesn’t feel right, it’s perfectly ok to speak out. You can report it to the police, social work or national support groups. Don’t be worried about contacting anyone to help, it’s better that you and your money are safe from harm.” Financial harm can be from bogus traders or internet scams, but people can also have their money taken away from them by relatives, friends and carers. Key warning signs can include the sudden appearance of previously uninvolved relatives claiming rights to a person’s affairs and possessions or an unusual concern by someone that too much money is being spent on the care of the person. Financial harm can also be the cause if someone has a lack of basic things, like TV, toiletries, clothing, or food that they should be able to afford or they have unpaid bills or overdue rent, when someone else has been given power to manage the person’s finances. Other warning signs include an older person being isolated from friends and family, not having access to their own bank account or property and money disappearing without reason. Councillor Jacqueline Cameron, Vice-Chair of Renfrewshire Health and Social Care and Chair of Public Protection Committee, added: “Always keep an eye out for older people who are more vulnerable to financial harm but be aware that anyone can become a victim.” To report financial harm or a suspicion of it, contact Police Scotland on 101 or 999 in an emergency. Concerns can also be reported to Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership’s adult protection team on 0300 300 1380. Advice is also available from Renfrewshire Citizens Advice Bureau on 0141 889 2121 or Action on Elder Abuse Scotland helpline 0808 808 8141. Cash from Crooks up for Grabs Inverclyde Council is appealing to local community youth groups to bid for a share of money seized from criminals. Applications are now open for a share of £700,000 from the Scottish Government’s Cashback for Communities Youth Work Fund. Education & Communities Convener Councillor Jim Clocherty said: “This money will help fund projects for children and young people who themselves run the risk of getting caught up in the criminal justice system by circumstance rather than choice. There is no doubting the link between deprivation, exclusion from education and anti-social behaviour and more serious contacts with the police and the courts.” “We want to hear from projects targeting these issues to apply for vital funding that can benefit communities and change young lives for the better. The Council is determined to give young people every opportunity to make the most of their lives and Cashback is a great way to source extra funds.” Cashback takes assets seized from drug dealers and other criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act and ploughs the money back into communities. Priority will be given to projects and activities which address inequalities, particularly in areas of deprivation. The closing date for applications is 1pm on Friday 7th December 2018. A Power of Attorney (“PoA”) is a formal document in which you give authority to someone such as a family member or close friend to make decisions for you (typically financial matters and ‘welfare’ matters such as medical treatment and long-term care during your lifetime), if you become incapable of looking after your own affairs. A PoA only comes into effect if its own conditions are met (principally that a suitably-qualified doctor certifies that you are incapable of managing your own affairs). There are detailed regulations giving substantial protection to the granter of a PoA, overseen by the Office of the Public Guardian. Granting PoA’s is increasingly common. Without one there will be difficulties for your family and friends in trying to assist you, should the need arise. Someone would have to apply to court asking to be appointed your legal guardian, involving considerable delay and expense. Until the application was granted, limited assistance would be available from institutions such as banks, hospitals and care homes because you would be unable to give instructions, and no-one would have authority on your behalf. Wills instead only operate on death, appoint Executors to carry out your wishes and set out how your Estate is to be distributed. They can also make specific bequests and appoint Guardians to look after young children. Failure to set up a Will can result in difficulties for your family and may result in more Inheritance Tax being paid than is necessary. In addition, the absence of a will can cause confusion, give rights to certain family members and frustrate your intentions regarding money and distribution of your estate. Solicitors will recommend PoA’s and wills to almost all clients.
