WE WERE ROBBED!
On the morning of September 27th
2017, a group of volunteers were
ready to get to work when Rick
Boman, Construction Manager,
discovered $5000 worth tools
were stolen. Someone took our
tools out of our trailer on our
Habitat home build site late in the
night.
Executive Director Jeannie
Gamble explained that the
generator, air compressor, all of
the power tools, framing guns and
nailing guns were no where to be
found.
Without the tools, finishing the
build for the Diaz Family would
have been close to impossible. Our
affiliate started a GoFundMe page,
raising over $5000 within 2 days
to replace the tools that were lost.
In addition, the community came
together and donated some of their
used and brand-new tools.
Breaking
Ceremony
OGDEN — Brenda Guzman was so excited to break ground for her family’s upcoming Habitat for
Humanity home that she couldn’t keep her hard hat on. The 13-year-old jumped onto her shovel
several times, spilling her hat during a groundbreaking ceremony in a vacant lot at 450 15th St. in
Ogden Saturday, April 14. Brenda and her sister, Ariel Guzman, 15, said the hardships they’ve
overcome living in a drafty trailer during the winter months were difficult and that they were very
grateful to leave those problems behind. READ MORE: https://habitatwd.org/blog

completed home builds
The Family Selection team had selected two
partner families. One was the Diaz family, a
single mother with two children, and the other
was the Parsons family, a disabled and retired
veteran with his two service dogs. HFHWD
obtained two lots next door to each other. They
are located at 129 and 141 30th Street, Ogden,
UT. By luck and fortune, the two selected partner
families ended up being neighbors.
The groundbreaking ceremony for both families
was held on April 11th, 2017.
The original plan was to build the two homes
within 4 to 6 months. However, there were many
obstacles pertaining to the location of the two
Habitat Homes.
129 & 141
30TH STREET
OGDEN UT 84401
We were about 130 days out due to permits. It
wasn't until around July 2017 that we were able to
start construction for the Diaz family.
We appreciate volunteers, community members,
business donors, and other supporters for helping
our affiliate build the two new Habitat Homes.
The Diaz family was able to move into their home
on December 22nd, 2017. The Parsons family
was able to have their home dedication on
February 3rd, 2018.

PAGE 10
THE DIAZ FAMILY
When the HFHWD Family Selection
Committee had asked the Diaz Family
how a home would change their lives,
they all started to cry. Esperanza, the
eldest child, just wanted to see daylight
when she woke up in the morning and
had somewhere warm and dry. Amisadai,
the youngest child, wanted to be in a
place she could play outside and be safe.
Reyna, the mother, wanted to give her
daughters the best chance to a good life.
HFHWD decided to choose Reyna and
her girls to be one of the selected families
of the year. The family had gone through
financial, emotional, and familial
hardships. HFHWD wanted to be able to
bring hope into the lives of this amazing
family.
After the permits were received in July,
construction could begin. From finish to
end, and with the help from dedicated
volunteers and community members, the
Diaz family was able to move into their
home on December 22nd, 2017.

PAGE 11
THE PARSONS FAMILY
How can a safe home make a difference in
someone's life?
After receiving this house from Habitat for
Humanity, Travis is going to be able to have a
direct positive impact on a numerous amount
of people. His mother is having to retire this
year due to health issues and she will end up
staying with him. His father is currently battling
Alzheimer's. If there is anything that might
happen with his father's situation, he would
have to take care of him also.
In addition to his mother and father, Travis'
son may also be living with him.
His son would be able to help take care of the
household and Travis.
For Travis, personally, it means the chance to
become self-sufficient again and an
opportunity to flourish. It gets really hard
sometimes to feel like you have worth in life if
you cannot even take care of yourself. For
him, this house represents independence and
self-respect, and the ability to start fresh.
From finish to end, and with the help from
dedicated volunteers and community
members, the Parsons family was able to
move into their home on February 3rd, 2018.

NEW HABITAT PARTNER FAMILY
Aurora Guzman is a single mother with six children. Her
story is one about family sticking together even when
times get hard. The Guzman family has encountered
many obstacles. And still, they seem to be a very
cohesive family who help each other to make things work.
Aurora described her life as filled with many ups and
downs. When she first arrived to Utah, she and her
children were living with another family. When her sixth
child was born, she moved her family into a small
apartment. This apartment had two bedrooms and one
bathroom. Due to the size of the apartment, two of her
daughters had to live with their father. It wasn’t long after
that she was asked to leave the apartment. Apparently,
there had been too many complaints of her having so
many children and there was not enough room for her
family. She then decided to move into another family’s
basement. The basement they were living in was only
one room with a bathroom and no space for cooking or
laundry. Two of her children continued to live with their
father, separated from the other children. Aurora and her
four remaining children lived in the small basement for
three months.Aurora missed her two absent children, but
was having trouble putting food on the table for the four
she had. She continuously worried that she might be
evicted. It was becoming too much for her emotionally.
All she wanted was a place where she could live reunited
with all six kids. But no one wanted six children in an
apartment. Due to this, Aurora decided to look for a
trailer. Aurora finally found a trailer that was within her
budget. There were holes in the ceiling and in the
floorboards. The windows were so thin that cold wind
blew right through the house. However, all the kids could
fit in it and it was all she could afford, since other trailers
were expensive.
A BRUSH WITH KINDNESS
Our A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) program serves families
by responding to community aspirations. With the array of
products, services, partnerships, and our mission of
empowering residents, we are able to revive nighborhoods
and enhance the quality of life.
This initiative is our ABWK program, which helps local lowincome
families in the community repair the exterior of their
homes so that they are able to live in safe, decent homes for
years to come.
We use volunteers to perform affordable exterior work,
including painting, minor home repairs, landscaping, cleanup
projects, and building decks and ramps for those in need.
