KIDSTUFF
Play, laugh, learn. These are the essential
ingredients for a successful Pre-School
education. These crucial early years are to be
nurtured, shaped and cherished as your child
takes their first steps in education.
Research states that play may be the single
most important things that humans do. “Our
play based learning approach supports your
child as they begin their exciting journey as a
lifelong learner” says Principal Scott Thelning.
you a wonderfully easy opportunity to engage
in your child’s learning if you are working in
the CBD.
foundations in literacy and numeracy. He
or she will enjoy the benefits of specialised
facilities, subjects and staff including Art,
When children feel good about themselves
and their abilities, they are able to take flight
and explore, discover, take risks and play,
laugh and learn effectively and successfully.
“Self-esteem is at the core of this development
process” Thelning says.
DOROTHY Perkins celebrated her 100th
birthday on Friday.
She was joined by family and friends
from Dunedin, Invercargill, Tauranga
and as far away as England at Edith Cavell
Lifecare and Village in Sumner.
Miss Perkins received letters
congratulating her from the Queen, Port
Hills MP Ruth Dyson and several people
living on Stewart Island. She was the
district nurse on Stewart Island from 1965-
1972, where she would look after seasick
ferry passengers, newborn babies, the
elderly, and accident victims.
Miss Perkins became famous
throughout the community for driving
what relatives described as a “green army
jeep” to see patients across the island.
Her cousin Robert Overton said Miss
Perkins was often on call 24 hours a day as
she was the only nurse on the island.
“She had to be a bit of everything there.
There wasn’t even a doctor on the island.”
Before she was the district nurse on
Stewart Island, Miss Perkins worked at
St Helen’s Hospital in Sydenham, Dee St
Maternity Hospital in Invercargill and was
also matron at the Lumsden Maternity
Centre.
After seven years of service on
Stewart Island, Miss Perkins retired in
Christchurch but continued to care for
family and friends.
“Dot has been the lady who has moved
where the need has been to look after
people. She looked after both my wife’s
parents and my parents before they passed
away,” Mr Overton said.
Miss Perkins was driving people to
church, getting her own groceries and
looking after herself in her Redcliffs home
ROYAL TREATMENT: Dorothy Perkins
was all smiles after receiving a card
from the Queen.
until Christmas last year, when she moved
to Edith Cavell Lifecare and Village.
Mr Overton said Miss Perkins would
always put the needs of other people before
her own.
“Dot never wanted to be a worry. If she
fell at two in the morning she would wait
till six to call the buzzer. One day she had
a fall in the garden so she shuffled into
a bush and did some weeding while she
waited for help to arrive. She’s not one to
cause a fuss.”
