Upgrade proposed
for Kirwee reserve
• By Emily O’Connell
A NEW or updated playground,
dog exercise area and a shared
walkway and cycleway are just
some of the proposals being
considered for the redevelopment
of the Kirwee Recreation Reserve.
The reserve, which includes
sports fields and a bowling green,
is set to be redeveloped over the
next 10 years.
The district council’s Long
Term Plan has allocated $200,000
from 2019 for the project.
A working party, consisting of
three reserve management committee
members, three Kirwee
Community Committee members,
a representative from the
Malvern Community Board and
district council, was set up about
Working party chairman
Raymond Williams said it is currently
looking at everything in
the reserve and considering what
would be beneficial for the community
in 20 to 30 years’ time.
Mr Williams said they are
planning to plant natives around
the boundary of the reserve next
year.
“That’s cemented in, I suppose.
Hoping to have that planted by
May,” he said.
Mr Williams said it set-up
a display board at the recent
Courtenay A&P Show for
members of the public to place
their ideas on.
So far, suggestions include
a new or updated playground,
youth area, community area,
dog exercise area, more sporting
facilities, shelter and a walkway
and cycleway around the reserve’s
boundary.
Mr Williams said once it has a
better idea of where everything
could go, and the district council’s
“reasonably happy,” it will
consult with the community.
He’s hopeful consultation will
take place “by autumn next year.”
The project will also include
irrigating the reserve using the
Central Plains Water Scheme. It
is currently irrigated from the
township water supply, sourced
from underground wells but
exceeds its allocated amount
under Kirwee’s water metering
system.
for the reserve
redevelopment, email it to
committee’s secretary
THE $808,000 new community
pavilion at Weedons Reserve has
been completed.
Construction started on
the project in May following
the demolition of the existing
clubrooms.
District
council major
projects
manager John
Reid said
final tidy-up
is progressing
and the centre
should be
available for
Julie Cockburn full use in
about a week.
Mr Reid said a date has not
been finalised for an official
opening but it’s expected to be in
the new year.
He said the building cost
$750,000 including consenting,
architectural and professional
consultancy costs.
“In addition a power upgrade,
$26,000, and new sewerage
system, $32,000, were added to
future-proof the building,” Mr
Reid said.
The building includes a
lounge, a small kitchen, two
dressing rooms and some public
toilet facilities.
Weedons Tennis Club
secretary Julie Cockburn said
it was “absolutely marvellous”
that it has received the code of
compliance.
“It will be nice to have the
pavilion with all the facilities
back up and going again,” she
said.
The tennis courts were
moved and realigned to allow
for a larger cricket oval for the
Weedons Cricket Club as part
of the community pavilion
