CHRISTMAS IS now just

its proposed development at 112 Talavera

Road, Macquarie Park, by a third.

But it now appears certain the project will have to be

put on hold, at least until next year’s state election is

over, despite months of work by City of Ryde’s

planning staff, culminating in a report by planning chief

Liz Coad recommending approval of the proposal.

The expected refusal of the proposal at an

extraordinary meeting of Ryde Council last night, after

The Weekly Times had gone to press, means the $35m

package of benefits negotiated by City of Ryde in a

Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) with Meriton has

been squandered.

With the March 2019 poll fast approaching Meriton’s

proposal has become a political football with the

community’s ability to understand the true facts one of

the main casualties.

In an extraordinary late development, it was revealed

yesterday that NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian - under

pressure to save her government from electoral

wipeout - has now entered the fray, ordering an urgent

review into the “overdevelopment of Ryde”.

Ms Berejiklian’s decision to order the Greater Sydney

Commission (GSC) review, led by Lucy Turnbull, comes

after Ryde MP Victor Dominello last week publicly

called for it to happen.

Dear Sir,

The conduct in which

I even noticed the Mayor

UN’s global war

on the West

Dear Sir,

The growing Saltbush Climate

Lobby has called on

PM Morrison to make no

new commitments at the

COP24 climate-fest to be

held in Poland in a few days.

Australians no longer trust

what politicians and officials

are doing behind closed doors

far from home.

Nothing of benefit to Australian

consumers, tax payers

or business will come out of

COP24.

It will just extend the UN’s

war on our cheap, reliable

hydro-carbon fuels and the

backbone industries that rely

on them – primary industries,

transport, processing and

manufacturing.

It is effectively a “War on the

West”.

Australia is particularly vulnerable

with no nuclear power,

no geothermal power and

limited hydropower.

This war on reliable hydrocarbon

fuels and the promotion

of unreliable wind and

solar power will increasingly

deny our industries and consumers

cheap reliable power.

There is no justification for

the War on carbon dioxide

– there is no proof that CO2

and Earth’s climate cannot be

Trifecta odds to

romp home

Dear Sir,

Recently Scott Morrison

has performed well in certain

areas but he still needs

to do more.

He must take care of at least

three issues to make clear the

difference between the Coalition

policies and those of Labor.

He needs a triple treat.

The first issue is immigration

– he is currently considering

cutting back on numbers.

He has stated that he will

make a decision before

Christmas on moving our embassy

to Jerusalem – that’s

the second issue.

The third issue is scrapping

the Paris agreement,

the abolition of the subsidies

to renewables or perhaps the

building of HELE coal-fired

power stations. He has a few

choices on this issue.

Should he achieve this

trifecta, he would not only

“Shorten” his odds in the election

stakes, he would actually

have a n excellent chance of

causing an upset.

CONSIDERATION OF AN INCREASE TO RATES

EXHIBITION OF COUNCIL’S INTEGRATED PLANNING DOCUMENTS

INCLUDING THE LONG TERM FINANCIAL PLAN

While Council continues to strive to increase the efficiency of its operations in

order to remain financially viable and provide for effective maintenance and

renewal of its community infrastructure, several external factors have led to costs

increasing beyond Council’s control.

Shortly, all ratepayers will receive a detailed brochure outlining Council’s proposed

rate strategy which has been developed to maintain, further develop and enhance

our community facilities.

Council will be asking the community and property owners for feedback about

the following three options:

• Option 1: Rate peg increase 2.7% (statutory increase that all councils

receive)

• Option 2: Rate peg 2.7% + Community Facilities 4.04% SV (10 year

period)

• Option 3: Rate peg 2.7% + Community Facilities 4.04% SV (10yrs) +

Please visit the Hunter’s Hill Council website www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au for

questions (FAQ’s).

Council also has its Integrated Planning & Reporting (IP&R) documents on public

exhibition. This includes Councils Community Strategic Plan and Long Term

Financial Plan (LTFP) which outline Council’s financial position and reasons

why Council will consider a SV. Comments will be received up until Monday 10

December 2018.

Your feedback will be used to make a determination on the proposed variation to

rates and residents can participate by:

Rangers blitz

College parents

Dear Sir,

I would like to let you know

how Hunter Hill Rangers fine

parents dropping off kids at

Marist Sisters College at Woolwich.

They are issuing $337 fines!

Considering there are NO parent

drop off/pick up zones there

and council have made all the

other areas No stopping zone, it

makes it very difficult for parents

to drop off kids at school.

There are few parking spots

which are always full and the rest

is either Bus zone or No stopping

zone.

So unless we fly a helicopter

and drop them off like that, or

drop them off 500 metres before

or after school, I don’t see any

other way.

Why are there no drop off

zones for parents?

What are we supposed to do?

How come there are drop

off zones at Hunters Hill public

school?

I know this is a high school

and most kids go on the bus,

but sometimes we need to drop

them off for various reasons, only

to be greeted by lovely Hunters

Merry Christmas to me from

Anzac Committee

Dear Sir,

I would like to pass on my

sincere thanks to all members

of the Centenary of ANZAC

and World War I Committee for

their tireless efforts over the

past four years.

Each committee member has

given up countless hours of their

own time to provide our community

with opportunities to commemorate

our fallen heroes and

honour our surviving veterans.

Their hard work has more than

paid off with the committee completing

several fitting monuments

and tributes since their work

started in 2014.

This includes:

- ANZAC Day Commemoration

Service: A new service at the

family friendly time of 9am on Anzac

Day at Anzac Park;

- Remembrance Day Service

at Memorial Park, Meadowbank:

Traditional service moved to Memorial

park involving school children

and local residents;

- The Remembrance Walk:

A series of 12 commemorative

plaques in Anzac Park that highlight

the involvement of Ryde

residents during World War I;

- ANZAC Day Flag Poles: Three

new flag poles were installed at

Anzac Park as part of the final

stage of the Remembrance Walk;

- Restored Honour Boards:

A pair of World War I honour

boards, dedicated to Eastwood

and North Ryde war heroes, were

restored and now hang in the City

of Ryde Council Chambers;

- Interactive World War I Kiosk

and Website: A portal that recognises

more than 2000 local service

men and women who served

in World War I;

- Street Sign Project: Street

names in the local area with links

to World War I received new

street signs referencing World

War I;

- 2000 Poppies Project: Members

of the community helped

to create more than 2000 handmade

Red Poppies;

- Armistice Plinth: A plinth

was installed at Memorial Park

in Meadowbank to mark the Armistice

and the day the guns fell

silent ending World War I.

In addition, the work the committee

has undertaken to promote

the Spirit of the ANZAC

cannot be understated and has

resulted in attendances at the

City of Ryde’s ANZAC ceremonies

gradually increase each year.

While the work of the committee

has now officially concluded,

their legacy will go on for generations

to come, and for that

the entire community is extremely

thankful for their efforts.

Finding Sensible Solutions

IT WAS disappointing

to see Hunters Hill Council

reject a proposal by

Councillor Zac Miles to

improve the complying

development system.

Councillor Miles’ proposal

would see the building

code enhanced to incorporate

local variations to

suit the local character of

Hunters Hill.

Instead, the Council issued

an ultimatum that

would freeze the entirety

of Hunters Hill in a conservation

area if Council’s

demands for a blanket

exemption from the NSW

code are not met.

As it stands, 80 per cent

of the Hunters Hill local

government area is already

excluded from complying

development.

I am advised that this is

the greatest exclusion of

any local government area

in NSW.

For the remainder of

Hunters Hill, the complying

development process

is an alternative to the often

arduous Development

Application (DA) process.

Complying Development

Certificates save homeowners

time and money.

Unlike council DAs, there

is no merit assessment, no

occasional relaxation of

the rules.

Instead certificates are

issued on a strict set of

black and white rules.

* * *

BUT THE recent fuss at

Council is not really about

Development Applications

versus complying development

approvals.

The concerns, which are

valid, regard the enforcement

of the rules. We have

NOTICE OF EXTRAORDINARY MEETING

12 DECEMBER 2018

Notice is hereby given that an Extraordinary Meeting of Council will be held in the

The purpose of the meeting is for consideration of a Special Rate Variation.

In accordance with the Council Code of Meeting Practice, ‘Clause 13.2 Addressing

a compliance problem.

The fear-mongering and

talk of blanket bans are

merely a distraction from

a problem that exists for

both complying development

and DAs.

Some unscrupulous private

certifiers have not

adhered to the code and

have not dealt with the fair

concerns that neighbours

have raised.

Fortunately, new laws

passed last month mean

tougher regulation of private

certifiers by NSW Fair

Trading.

* * *

ENFORCEMENT of

building construction

compliance is Council’s

responsibility.

I will continue to press

for more responsive action

by Council when

neighbours raise legitimate

concerns.

The Minister for Planning

and Housing Anthony

Roberts introduced

changes to legislation this

year that bolster Councils

‘stop work’ powers and

ability to levy fees to cover

the costs associated with

enforcement.

But of course there is

room for improvement in

the complying development

code too.

I am concerned that

standards in the code do

not adequately deal with

important issues like consistency

of streetscape or

the unnecessary removal

of trees - an issue I am especially

passionate about.

The tree canopy of Hunters

Hill is one of our greatest

assets, and we must

act to preserve it.

* * *

THE THREAT to absorb

the entirety of Hunters Hill

into the conservation zone

is a reactive policy stance

that does nothing to improve

building construction

compliance.

Homeowners outside

the conservation zone

could see a squeeze in the

value of their real estate as

the unwarranted conservation

controls constrict

their choices over time.

We need sensible regulation,

not over regulation.

Having constructive dialogue

with the Minister for

Planning is the best way

to achieve good planning

outcomes that work for all

of Hunters Hill.

Councils and Councillors

across NSW - including

myself - have been

providing feedback to the

Minister, which has helped

shape the ongoing review

and refinement of the

code.

Please get in touch with

me if you have any suggestions

to improve the

built environment of Hunters

Hill. If we all work

together, we can get so

much more done for the

community.

Council concerned by Gladesville marina development

A POTENTIAL development of the Gladesville Bridge

Marina will be monitored by Hunters Hill councillors,

who have heard concerns about potential environmental

impacts.

The Marina is located

beside the Gladesville

Bridge and is seeking

to expand from a 99

boat capacity to a 129

boat capacity.

Council’s Reporting

Officer Tony Mc-

Namara this week

informed the council

that the Marina

also seeks to change

swing mooring leased

areas, double the existing

on site parking

and cease current

slipway operations.

“Possible issues

could include visual

impacts, noise from

boating activities,

potential for environmental

impacts due to

more and larger motor

craft and fuel storage

facilities,” Mr McNamara

reports.

The project may be

of interest to Hunters

Hill residents, particularly

those on the

opposite side of the

Parramatta River at

Huntleys Point.

“At this point of

time no details of the

project are available

other than those identified

in the brochure

which is available on

the Marina website.”

Mr McNamara notes

that “no development

application has

been submitted to the

City of Canada Bay

Council which is the

adjacent Council authority,

at the present

time” but he adds that

“the information released

by the proponents

shows that the

project will be (State

Significant) designated

development.”

A local action group

has been set up to

save the Gladesville

Bridge waterways and

group spokesman

Matthew Ward urged

Hunters Hill council to

support the group and

protect the Parramatta

River.

“One of Sydney’s

most recognised

stretches of the Parramatta

River is being

threatened by over

development on a

scale that will create

an eye-sore on one

of the narrowest parts

of the river,” Mr Ward

said.

“This will have significant

negative impact

on boat traffic, rowers,

kayakers, fishers

and the Parramatta

River shoreline.

“Further development

of this marina

will benefit a select

few.

“This marina proposal

will impact on

river navigation and

on tidal flow.”

Councillor Ross Williams

moved a motion

to note that Hunters

Hill Council, in principle,

opposes any

future alienation of

community access

and use of our waterways

as well as any

risk of pollution to the

Parramatta River.

The Gladesville

Bridge Marina made

headlines decades

ago when an access

road to the Marina

was alleged to have

cut into the adjacent

Howley Park, a heritage

park that is one

of the original “five

docks” of the City of

Canada Bay.

Opposition to the

access road was led

by former Drummoyne

MP John Murray with

the support of councillors

from the former

Drummoyne Council.

The access road

went ahead, despite

community protest

rallies at the site.

Learning about Sciatica

By STEFAN SCHEUERMAIR, Physiotherapist

Hee Pa'n

Experts

Suffering morning heel pain or

pain after activity?

There are over 20 causes of heel pain, so an accurate

diagnosis is vital in your recovery. We are here to help you.

One

Point

Health

P: 9809 4464

10 Pope Street, Ryde

Podiatry | Physiotherapy | Massage Therapy

SCIATICA is a condition we often here about from family, friends or co-workers.

You commonly hear it

feeling like shooting leg

pain or a jolt down the

leg.

Its normally given quite

a serious under tone

with a degree of fear attached

to it.

The question is: what

is Sciatica and what can

be done about it?

‘Sciatica’ or ‘Radicular

Pain’ is a term used to

describe a pain that is

produced from an irritated

nerve exiting your

spine.

There are many reasons

for why a nerve

may be irritated, the

most common reason

being a bulged or herniated

disk.

Radicular pain can

occur in the neck and

radiate in the arms or

head, in the upper back

and radiate around the

chest, or in the lower

back and radiate into

the hips or legs and feet.

What is important to

understand is that it’s

the irritated nerve which

is the problem, not the

herniated disk specifically.

Most people have

multiple bulging disks

in their backs and have

never experienced

radicular pain.

Furthermore, patients

who recover from radicular

pain often still have

the disk herniation present.

How Physiotherapists

treat it:

1. We figure out what

your pain likes. Radicular

pain is less like a

road map and more like

a puzzle. We need to

figure out its tendencies

and address each of

these factors.

2. We get it moving!

Often the reason

your nerve is irritated

is because it is being

pressed on by something

that it doesn’t

recognises. Movement

helps open and recognise

the affected region

which calms down pain.

Initially we start with

gentle movements and

later a tailored exercise

program.

3. We get you back to

normal. Once your pain

has settled, often there

are secondary issues

such as body stiffness

and weakness which

need to be addressed to

get you back to normal.

Radicular pain can

be a frightening experience,

it can be very

painful and seem unending.

Rest assured a lot can

be done, you don’t need

to be afraid your pain,

we are here to help.

Dramatic chase follows Eastwood Public School crash

A TEENAGER was captured by police

after his car hit another vehicle

and then crashed through a fence at

Eastwood Public School, prompting

a teacher to chase him.

Police attempted to

stop the allegedly stolen

Honda Odyssey at

West Ryde, before it

smashed into a Holden

Commodore on the

corner of Shaftsbury

Road and Rutledge

Street in Eastwood

around 2.50pm last

Thursday.

The 15-year-old alleged

offender jumped

from the crashed Honda

and ran into the

grounds of Eastwood

Public School, sparking

a police pursuit involving

a teacher, the

PolAir helicopter and

the dog unit.

After he was captured

the offender was

searched by police who

allegedly found the key

to another stolen car.

Technology and PE

teacher Josh Bowman

said his class had just

finished when the offender

ran towards him

and he chased him.

“He ran around the

corner and saw me and

then took off so I went

and chased him just

to make sure that the

kids were okay and he

wasn’t hanging around

anywhere, but I lost

him unfortunately in

the back buildings,” he

said.

but

In a another letter to

the Premier that has

found its way to the

media and suddenly

become a story, Mrs

Turnbull said the

investigation - which

will make recommendations

next May -

would focus on the

Macquarie Park business

park and its

broader impact on

the community.

The commission

will work with the

Department of Planning

and Environment

to understand

the work it has been

doing in this area

over the past several

years,” Mrs Turnbull

said.

The amended Meriton

proposal reduces

the tallest structure

on the site from

63-storeys to 42-storeys,

prompted by

Mayor Jerome Laxale’s

decision to call

last night’s extraordinary

meeting to

determine the matter.

Clr Laxale did not

wait until last night’s

meeting to announce

he would still recommend

refusal to the

amended, reducedheight

proposal,

instead informing his

supporters in an

email update:

“Council officers

have just released

their report on the

now amended planning

proposal by

Meriton (60 storeys,

down to 42),” the

Mayor wrote.

“Despite the Council

officer’s recommendation,

I will still

move to recommend

refusal at the Extraordinary

Council meeting

on 4 December

2018.”

Mayor Laxale, who

often defends council’s

staff in the face

of criticism - and

even councillor scrutiny

- now appears to

be at odds with planning

chief, Ms Coad,

over the proposal.

Ms Coad had

emphatically urged

approval of the

amended proposal

she believes

addresses community

concerns raised

during the monthlong

exhibition and

public consultation.

“Council should

support the amendment

to height and

for the plan to proceed

on that basis

and be forwarded to

the Greater Sydney

Commission with the

Voluntary Planning

Agreement also

endorsed by Council,”

she writes in her

report conclusions,

adding the General

community benefit

extracted from Meriton

in its VPA with

City of Ryde, notably

arranging media

opportunities to

announce the Meriton-funded

$8m-plus

contribution to Christie

Park upgrades.

But Ms Coad has

left no doubt those

benefits are at risk in

the event council

fails to endorse the

amended proposal.

“Finally I have to

advise that should

City of Ryde Council

fail to make a decision

at this stage the

Minister for Planning

or the Greater Sydney

Commission

under Section 3.32

(2) of the Environmental

Planning and

Assessment Act can

direct the Planning

Secretary to intervene

if the Council

has failed to comply

with its obligations,”

she writes.

“Which will put the

VPA and $35 million

of public benefit at

risk.”

2019 state

election

influence

The seat of Ryde’s

two main contenders

at the 2019 election

- incumbent Liberal

MP, Mr Dominello

and Labor candidate,

Clr Laxale - have

seized on the opportunity

to portray

themselves as the

community’s champion

in the fight

against overdevelopment.

The scare mongering

actions of the

Mayor and the Local

Member have

opened up a community

concern

about the Meriton

project that is emotional

not rational,

CEO of Urban Taskforce,

Chris Johnson,

told The Weekly

Times.

“Less height will

mean more bulk and

less public open

space at ground level.

The anti-development

rhetoric by the

two competing politicians

can only lead

to a solution that is

worse than the applicants

proposal.”

In earlier comments

made in a recent

opinion piece published

in The Weekly

Times, Mr Johnson

said: “The planning

system is unfortunately

being used as

a mechanism to garner

votes for the

state election in

March 2018.”

He also questioned

the utility of the community

engagement

submissions

received when “there

are not hundreds of

low rise homes

around the site who

may feel threatened”

adding it was more

likely Mr Dominello’s

campaign galvanised

anti-change voters.

“It can only be concerns

about the

March election that

is overriding the logic

of the state government’s

support for

the future of Macquarie

Park,” he

wrote.

“Hopefully the real

decision makers will

not be swayed by

emotion and will

stick to a rational

decision making process.”

With growing community

distaste over

the rate of development

across Greater

Sydney, both Mr

Dominello and Mr

Laxale have followed

what’s become conventional

political

wisdom in avoiding

issues with the

potential to damage

your prospects close

to an election.

Mr Dominello has a

head start in this

department - crediting

himself with the

recently announced

two-year freeze on

new rezoning applications

for residential

housing in Ryde.

It is the only local

government body

that has so far been

extended this relief,

apart from the City of

Canterbury Bankstown

which - along

with Ryde - had the

controversial new

‘Manor House’ provisions

put on hold.

A campaign by Mr

Dominello and Ryde

Liberal councillors

against the 112 Talavera

Road development,

characterises

it negatively, including

claims it was “ill

considered”, not

supported by adequate

infrastructure

and likely to worsen

congestion on roads

in the area.

more importantly,

has become a standard

approach used

across NSW for

council VPA negotiations.

Ms Coad’s report

outlines in detail the

various steps undertaken

in the multistage

process since

Meriton’s proposal

was first lodged in

May 2016, including

the GSC’s stamp of

approval through its

delegate, the NSW

Department of Planning

and Environment.

“Under the Environmental

Planning and

Assessment Act

1979, the Greater

Sydney Commission

is the local planmaking

authority,”

Ms Coad writes.

“However, when the

Planning Legislation

Amendment (Greater

Sydney Commission)

Act 2018 commences

(which is imminent),

the Minister for

Planning will become

the local plan-making

authority.”

A home for a gnome links Maureen with an executive

THE CEO of one Sydney’s major community housing providers met with one of his most charming tenants

in Marsfield on Thursday.. and her garden gnomes !

Andrew McAnulty is the CEO

of Link Housing which provides

3,800 homes for more

than 5,000 local people such as

Maureen Bennett.

“Every Australian deserves a

home of their own and I’m so

proud of the role Link Housing

plays in providing affordable

homes for so many local people

on a low income,” he said.

“We are also proud of our partnership

with many charities like

the St Vincent de Paul Society,

the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, the

Housing Connection and many

domestic violence refuges.”

Ms Bennett is from Cardiff in

Wales and has lived in the local

area for more than 34 years.

Her need for a smaller and

more manageable unit was met

By KATHLEEN SYNNOTT

Licensed Real Estate Agent

Bresic Whitney

MOVING DAY: In this series of articles over the past

five weeks we have covered in detail the experiences

of Marian and Terry from West Ryde - empty nesters

downsizing from their family home after 42 years to

a unit.

This is what they revealed.

We were on the market

on September 6, our auction

was scheduled for October

9 and we settled and

moved into our new home

on November 9 - that’s ten

weeks in total.

There were five key stages

to this journey.

1. The initial and investigative

stage included exploring

what is out there

by Link Housing and she has

gone on to win City of Ryde

awards for her garden, complete

with gnomes, elves and

pixies.

“This unit is just perfect, it is

so comfortable and so quiet and

everyone in the units around me

get along,” she said.

“I’ve even have a little kitten

to live with and, of course, my

garden gnomes.”

Mr McAnulty said it is an honour

to meet Maureen.

“I’ve never been introduced

to a garden gnome before,” he

said.

“So although I don’t know

what to say to a gnome, I can

certainly say how much we

value Maureen as a tenant

and how much we recognise

that might be appealing to

explore all options further

if and when we decide to

sell.

And the big question: Do

we sell or buy first? We

could see the market was

rapidly changing and on

our agents’ advice we felt

it prudent to know that we

had a buyer in place and

what we would get for the

property before moving

forward with a purchase.

Part of this process is to

evaluate and choose an

agent; (b) Engage a solicitor

or conveyancer to prepare

the contract for sale.

2. Next step was the

decluttering process and

on the advice of our agent

Kathleen we consulted

with a removalist specialising

in downsizers and she

secured storage space for

us at a discounted rate for

three months, steered us

in the direction of where

and how to dispose of furniture.

Robyn had a very

re-assuring ‘leave it with

me” attitude and when

we needed to find a new

home for our piano, we

called Robyn who had

advertised it on the Cool

Mums of Ryde social media

platform and within five

minutes we had as much

as five takers.

She certainly had us

“sorted” from the number

of packing boxes to coordinating

the transfer of

some of our furniture that

we wished to send our son

in Canberra and was never

short of the right advice.

3. We found out that

presenting our home for

market was a big key in

getting buyers through the

door.

The decluttering over,

Kathleen offered the services

of Amanda Bei Bei Li

from Uplift Interiors .

BresicWhitney.com.au/20473

101 Wicks Road

Amanda gelled with us

instantly and once she

had worked her magic

we felt that we were more

the important contribution she

makes to her village community

through her gardening and

through her role of the local resident’s

group.”

Link Housing now manages

1,875 more homes as part of

the NSW Government’s Social

Housing Management Transfer

program.

“With increased housing

stress and cost of living pressures,

social housing has

become a critical issue for a

growing number of people,” Mr

McAnulty said.

“In the Northern Sydney area,

the waiting periods for social

housing can be as high as 10

years and the State Government

is transferring its social

housing tenancies to community

housing providers.”

Mr McAnulty regularly visits

Link Housing homes to ensure

that his staff are meeting tenants’

needs, like Maureen’s.

The staff from Link Housing

have been absolutely terrific

and I’ve been allocated a delightful

housing manager who

has reassured me that my rental

arrangements will remain exactly

the same and is available

to answer any questions.

“A staff member from Link

Housing’s Community Engagement

Team has even attended

my local residents’ group to explain

the tenancy transfer.

“ It’s lovely to know that Link

Housing takes a personal interest

in our situation and is willing

to go out of their way to help.”

Final stage of the Downsizing Jour ney

than ready for photos. By

repositioning artwork and

furniture and introducing

a few pieces our home

looked more functional

and inviting. The window

cleaner and the gardener

just completed the picture.

4. The marketing shoot:

we loved BresicWhitney’s

holistic and artistic approach

to marketing and

the creative team arrived

and explained that their

job is to authentically capture

the emotion, mood

and personality of our

home .

Within 48 hours of this

appointment our signboard,

brochure and digital

listings were created.

We were ready for our

first open house and now

we needed to find a new

home before we sold

and found ourselves

homeless.

5. The final stages:

Selling /buying /moving .

Auction day came

around sooner enough

and whilst we were not

entirely convinced about

auction , we realised that

it became a deadline in

which buyers needed to

act or miss out on and

we were so happy to see

a young family become

the new owners of our

home.

Finding a new home

for ourselves was a bit

daunting but we kept

in mind that a location

convenient to shops and

amenities was a key ingredient

but also also

we were after a property

that had an ambience

about it..something with

Link Housing CEO Andrew McAnulty

shares a smile with tenant Maureen

Bennett, who has won awards

for her garden and is known for her

collection of garden gnomes. TWT

on-the-spot PHOTO

a view or leafy aspect

and sizeable and with

few stairs!

Something we could

move into and do nothing.

We were lucky to get

it all and more in one

package.

We sold on Saturday

and closed the deal on

the purchase on the

Monday, therefore marrying

up a simultaneous

settlement day.

The six weeks between

exchange and

settlement absolutely

flew and at times I felt I

was drowning in a sea

of packing boxes and

paper.

I sent Kathleen a message

to ask her if in her

toolbox of contacts

..does she have a therapist

..as the only disharmony

in the whole process

was assisting my

husband to get rid of his

“stuff”!!

We learnt a lot in the

process, made a lot

of new friends and we

learnt that when walking

into the unknown that

we needed to trust the

process.

Finding the right people

to help us on this

journey bought it altogether.

Family Fun Fair

at Macquarie Park

WILLANDRA Village residents recently hosted a street party to remember

for the local community with BaptistCare’s Family Fun Fair

held at Macquarie Park.

Renowned for its green

garden oasis nestled in

the centre of Macquarie

Park, the afternoon

proved to be a popular

and family friendly affair

for the local community.

With a range of market

stalls and live entertainment

to delight the

crowds, fun and festivity

were the order of the

day.

It was hard to ignore

the infectious sounds

of the Mariachi Band

whose high energy guitar

and dance routines

thrilled audiences young

and old.

Also on offer were

the soothing tones of

an acoustic guitar, the

thrills and spills of multiple

jumping castles,

face painting, balloon

twisting and agility dog

demonstrations.

Willandra Village

Manager Tracey Jones

shared her thoughts

about the day.

The Fair is a great

event that our residents

get behind and support,”

said Tracey.

“Not only is it a fun

afternoon, it offers an

opportunity to show the

local community our

beautifully refurbished

Retirement Living units

and this year the fair has

expanded to also showcase

our Home Care

and Residential Aged

Care services,” she

added.

Resident Committee

Chairman Ian Begbie

said the Fair “really

brings the local community

together and

offers people a chance

to come and see what

a wonderful community

Carlingford home fetches $1.9m

THIS unique family home at 48 Camelot Court Carlingford was sold by

Betty Ockerlander of McGrath Epping Real Estate at a small midweek auction

last Thursday for $1.9 million.

Property was re-auctioned between two buyers after passing in at auction a

few weeks ago. Betty was able to achieve the sale price of $1.9m, higher than

the original guide, which was a great result given the current market.

When she had two interested buyers, Betty did a mini auction between the

two of them.

Showcasing an architect designed custom renovation and interior designed

interiors, this contemporary family home features inspiring living and entertaining

spaces with a sublime reserve backdrop.

Features include a grand family and billiard room with vaulted ceiling; a gourmet

gas kitchen and stunning gardens with an enticing pool. In the prestigious

Kingsdene Estate, it’s close to the King’s School, Tara, James Ruse and shops.

WHAT CAN I BUILD analyses property data, demystifies government

legislation and explores development potential in a custom report.

Specialising in low to medium residential housing.

"My brother and I have owned an investment rental property in

Ermington for over IO years.

With the gentrification of Parramatta and the massive

infrastructure developments in the area, we know our

unrenovated three-bedder on a large parcel of land with

potential water views is ripe for redevelopment. We are not ready

to engage an architect to produce a DA yet, however, we were

intrigued to know what we could build, how much it would cost,

and the potential resale value.

Neither of us have the aptitude to wade through hundreds of

pages of Parramatta council DCP and LEP legislation, let alone

the time. I'm busy with my job and my brother is equally busy with

work and raising his family with his wife.

In less than three weeks we received our customised

whatcani.build report - and it answered all our questions and

more.

We now know we can develop a duplex, leveraging the water

views, which is not possible with the house as it is. Furthermore,

when we are ready, we have insight into the build costs, standard

to premium, and can compare this to what similar developed

properties are selling for. A real crystal ball!"

All rounder Clifford shows class for

Pirates in City & Suburban Cricket

HUNTERS Hill cricket team have experienced mixed fortunes

in the 2018-19 City & Suburban Cricket competition over the

past fortnight.

A loss to Old Cranbrookiansat

Dangar Oval Rose Bay was followed

up by an encouraging

victory over Colleagues at Boronia

Park Oval.

Old Cranbrookians posted

3-248 from their allotted 35

overs with the highlight an

unbroken partnership of 137 by

Hugo Martyr (90 not out) and

Jackson Lemon (50 not out).

Matt Cullen (1-30 off six) and

Imran Ali (1-32 off seven) were

the pick of the Pirates bowlers.

In reply. the Hillies had their

work cut out and at the half

way mark were ahead on the

required run rate but at a cost

of six wickets.

Joel Brooks was in good

touch and clubbed 34 in quick

fashion while Aron Williams (9)

THE WEEKLY TIMES

lent support to a passing parade

including a 73 run partnership

with James Woods,

who was on fire having a direct

hit runout from mid on earlier

when the Pirates were in the

field .

Hunters Hill went down but it

was great to see Woods give

his rivals a scare as he compiled

an equalling match top

score of 90 that featured six

sixes and eight boundaries.

The Hillies registered 7-226

against Colleagues in a Jack

Pace Shield competition clash

with Alex Miller top scoring with

a power laden 64 and ably supported

by Dane Clifford (48),

skipper Andrew Hobden (43

not out) and dashing opener

Joel Brooks (25).

Pace ace Manish Misra struck

early for Hunters Hill with Andy

Ball snaring a red hot catch at

short mid on to have the visitors

1-13.

Matt Cullen picked up two

off his seven overs to have the

visitors reeling at 3-69 while

Clifford was sharp and tidy with

the ball to snare 2-17 off his five

over spell.

Ball, Marco Angelini and

Ashley Emanuel all grabbed a

wicket apiece as Colleagues

(9-188) were left short of the

mark to finish at 9-188.

Boronia Park Oval doesn’t

often see more than 400 runs

scored on a day and the fact

that the majority were racked

up by the Hillies made it an

even better occasion.

2/4/1929 - 5/12/2008

A beautiful garden now stands alone,

missing the one who nurtured it

But now she is gone,

Her flowers still bloom, and the sun it still shines,

But the rain is like tear drops, for the ones left behind,

The weeds lay waiting to take the gardens beauty away,

But the beautiful memories of its

keeper are in our hearts to stay,

she loved every flower even some that were weeds,

So much love she would plant with each little seed,

But just like her flowers she was part of Gods plan,

So when it was her time he reached down his hand,

He looked through the Garden searching for the best,

That’s when he found Norma, it was her time to rest,

It was hard for those who loved her, to just let her go,

But God had a spot in his garden,

that needed a gentle soul,

So when you start missing Norma,

remember if you just wait,

When God has a spot in his garden,

She’ll meet you at the gate....

A PHONE SCAM is operating

in Hunters Hill and

Ryde which preys on the

elderly.

Police warn the scam

involves demands to pay

taxes and debts by revealing

personal financial

details to a scammer.

“Regardless of the

reason for payment, the

scam follows a certain

formula,” Ryde Police

warn.

The victim receives

a call instilling panic and

urgency to make a payment

by purchasing App

Store and iTunes Gift

Cards or Apple Store Gift

Cards from the nearest

retailer.

EMPLOYMENT

R de

~ CONDARY

COLLEGE

“After the cards have

been purchased, the

victim is asked to pay by

sharing the codes on the

back of the card with the

caller over the phone.

“It’s important to know

that App Store and iTunes

Gift Cards can ONLY be

used to purchase goods

and services from the

iTunes Store, App Store,

Apple Books, for an Apple

Music subscription,

or for iCloud storage.

“If you’re approached

to use the cards for any

other payment, you could

very likely be the target of

a scam and should immediately

report it to your

local police station and

never provide the numbers

on the back of the

card to someone you do

not know.

“Once those numbers

are provided to the

scammers, the funds

on the card will likely be

spent before you are able

to contact Apple or police.”

Local student Elijah continues to excel in discus

KEEP an eye out for track and field athlete Elijah Pallister - he may well end up singing the

national anthem while collecting a medal at an Olympic Games in the not too distant future.

The Year 5 student at

Northcross Christian

School in Ryde was recently

in Melbourne,

representing his school

and NSW at the School

Sport Australia Championships

at Lakeside

Stadium in the Under 12

Discus event.

Ten year old Elijah

qualified through to

the finals in Discus, for

which his perfomance

earned him a national

number four ranking.

It followed his bronze

medal at this year’s

NSW Primary Schools

Sports Association Athletics

Championships

where Elijah continued

his solid form in Discus

with a throw of 37.65m.

A versatile sporting

competitor, Elijah has

represented his school

at both soccer (football)

and table tennis and

participated in the Combined

Christian Sports

Association’s State

cross country events for

the past three years.

That’s not all - he also

loves to squeeze in

some baseball and basketball

too.

But more recently, he

appears to have discovered

an aptitude for the

discus event.

In

CARL

Little Athletics, Elijah

has chalked up a

swag of club records in

both discus and javelin

and placed fourth in

discus at the 2017 State

Championships.

Proud Carlingford father Dean Sports & Recreation Club

Pallister said Elijah’s

achievements did not

come about simply by

chance

CARL

and his results

were the product of hard

work and dedication.

“He’s trained very hard,

shown absolute dedication

and now seen that

translated into his results

Carlingford competition. Sports It’s & Recreation Club

not only a great sporting

lesson but more generally,

CARL

a life lesson too,”

Mr Pallister told The

Weekly Times.

Elijah boasts a personal

best of 40m in Discus,

11.20m in Shot Put and

25.68m in Javelin.

Elijah Pallister proudly displays his Discus

bronze medal at the NSW Primary Schools

Sports Association State championships.

Allan Border a smash hit

with Holy Cross cricketers

HOLY Cross College Ryde recently launched its First XI Metropolitan

Catholic Colleges cricket campaign for 2018-19 with Test

great Allan Border visiting the school to present baggy caps to respective

team members.

The legendary Border

provided some invaluable

tips on how to improve on

some of the subtleties of

cricket before speaking

about his tenure as Australian

Test captain and

even the issues surrounding

the current national

mens cricket team.

He also spoke to the

boys about leadership inside

and outside the classroom

and how important it

is to be able to focus and

concentrate on their studies

as that will then flow to

the boys’ cricket.

In a nice touch each

First XI player received not

only their baggy cap but

a number dating back to

the first Holy Cross cricket

team of 1909.

Team captain Matthew

Carey of Year 11 received

#479 and was honoured to

have the chance to meet

the famous Border who is

such a legend of Australian

sport.

The opportunity was

provided by Holy Cross

Old Boys Association

which again is one of

the great advantages the

boys at Holy Cross College

Ryde have access to

with more than 127 years

of successful men to call

upon.

Holy Cross are currently

undefeated in all three

divisions of MCC cricket

and are now looking forward

to competing in the

state wide Downie Shield.

The pride and gratitude

shown by all the students

at Holy Cross was something

to behold.
