What is one essential you must have when studying and why? My music because it keeps me motivated and doesn’t distract me. It helps block out the world around me in order to focus on my homework and keeps me relaxed. What do you like to do when not in school or studying? Whenever I am not in school or studying, I would be with my friends. We would sometimes hangout or try to get a pickup game of football going. What is your dream job and why? To become an aerospace engineer for a company like SpaceX would be the ideal job for me. I have become super fascinated with aircrafts, engineering and suborbital spaceflight ever since my visit to the NASA facility in Baltimore. There I came to realize that with my love of math and science, becoming an engineer and working on aircrafts would be an amazing dream. What is one thing people don’t know about you? That I am a triathlete and have participated in the Chicago triathlon. Whom do you look up to and why? The people that I look up to are Mr. Drumheller and my family because I know my family will always support me no matter my career path, decisions and struggles. But for Mr. Drumheller, I have known him since my freshman year. He started off as my Science Club mentor and I learned from him about engineering and robotics. He has taught me many of things and helped me become who I am and strive to be a great engineer. Who is your favorite teacher and why? Mr. Drumheller, because he is funny, very brilliant with robotics and physics, and just a great teacher to talk to and get to throughout my four years of high school. My freshman year, I sometimes got a pass to go to Mr. Drumheller’s room for help with stuff for Science Club, but I just watched his honors physics class lectures. What’s your favorite class and why? My favorite class is Auto Mechanics because I enjoy learning about the mechanics behind a car and enjoy the hands-on work. What’s one thing that stands out about your school? The best thing that stands out about Lincoln-Way Central is the students and staff because everyone is so kind, welcoming, and full of school spirit. If you could change one thing about school, what would it be? When being at school from the first bell at 8:21 a.m. to going home or going to an activity after the last bell at 2:52 p.m., I feel burnt out by the 6th and 7th hour class. If I had the ability to change the times, I would extend the time for lunch and advisory so students can recover and get mentally ready for their last hours of the day. What’s your best memory from school? Throughout my sophomore year I got to share many classes with one of my best friends’ Hector. We would always have competitions to see who the better student is, and we would joke around and have fun. We would have such a great time that our teachers would put us on the opposite side of the classroom. No way that would stop us. Also, before school, we try to meet up in the library around 7:30 a.m. to compare test scores if we just took a test and hang out together. Also, over this past summer my brother Andrew got a job as an EMT at Elite Emergency Medical Service and he would occasionally ask me to drive him to work at 6 a.m. So, one day he woke me up to drive him to work. We were driving through our neighborhood and saw black smoke billowing up near some of the houses. As we got closer, we noticed that the fence going across the side of the house was on fire. My brother and I decided to pull up to their house and he called 911 Photo Submitted while I went to wake the residence of the situation at hand. Once I felt that I woke the residents, Andrew and I ran into their back yard. He turned on the hose and made sure the family was OK while I put out the fire. The fire damaged roughly three sections of their fencing, and the neighbors shed with a propane tank in the corner could have gone off if nobody stopped it. Standout Student is a weekly feature for The New Lenox Patriot. Nominations come from New Lenox area schools. West student nominated for the Congress of Future Medical Leaders Submitted by Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 Samuel Duckworth, a junior at Lincoln-Way West, will be a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts on June 23-25, 2019. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Duckworth’s nomination letter was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent Illinois based on his academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. During the three-day Congress, Duckworth will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research; be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. “Focused, bright and determined students, like Duckworth, are our future and he deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give him.” The Academy offers free services and programs to students who want to be physicians or go into medical science. Some of the services and programs the Academy offers are online social networks through which future doctors and medical scientists can communicate; opportunities for students to be guided and mentored by physicians and medical students; and communications for parents and students on college acceptance and finances, skills acquisition, internships, career guidance and much more. The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists was founded on the belief that we must identify prospective medical talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of this vital career.
