Winnetka gallery to feature New Trier artwork, fundraise for nonprofit
Submitted by Vivid Art
Gallery
Vivid Art Gallery will
host an art opening for
New Trier High School’s
AP Art Students on Friday,
Dec. 7, at the gallery’s
monthly First Friday
event.
The opening, which runs
from 5-8 p.m., is open to
all and is free of charge.
The students will be present
at the opening, and refreshments
and live music
will round out the evening.
A call for submissions
was distributed to all New
Trier AP art students, under
the direction of teacher
Mark Bowers.
The theme of the exhibit
is “Bouquet,” and the students
were asked to create
artwork that reflects their
interpretation of that word.
“Bouquets often symbolize
a variety, a bunch,
a compliment, a commendation,
a tribute, an accolade;
praise or emotions,
an artist’s truth, perhaps
a collection of dreams or
ideas,” Bowers said. “It
may define intuitively an
intended focal point that
carries the viewer more
deeply into the artist’s
message.”
With that as a background,
the young artists
were asked to create
a piece in the medium of
their choosing.
This year’s exhibit will
be the second time that
Vivid Art Gallery has hosted
the work of the New Trier
AP Art Students. Cynthia
Burr, owner of the gallery,
sees it as a way to support
the community and emerging
artists in the area.
“We love having a relationship
with New Trier
and giving the students the
opportunity to have the
experience of answering
a call for submission and
having their work shown
in a gallery.” Burr said.
“It’s great for these kids
to have a real-world experience
like this. For those
who will go on in the art
world, this is a first taste of
what it’s like.”
Both Burr and Bowers
hope to see this program
continue in the future.
“It’s exciting for the students
and a lot of fun for
us,” Burr added. “And the
community loves it. We
had so many people come
in last year to see the kids’
work — and it wasn’t just
parents and grandparents.”
The exhibit will be up
from Dec. 4-21. All of
the students’ work will be
available for sale at the
price of $100. Proceeds
from the exhibit will be
donated to Teen Living
Programs, a nonprofit organization
serving homeless
youth in the city of
Chicago. The charity was
chosen by the students
themselves. Last year,
sales of the students’ work
raised $1,340 for earthquake
victims in Puerto
Rico.
In addition to the New
Trier AP Art Student Exhibit,
the gallery will be
hosting a Holiday Artisan
Market during the month
of December.
Lori Obereiner Bidwell
Lori Obereiner Bidwell,
a New Trier graduate, died
Nov. 12 after a courageous
battle with cancer. Bidwell
was born to John and Marilyn
(Schwarting) Obereiner
on July 29, 1958 in Chicago.
She was the beloved
wife of Mark Bidwell and
loving mother to Jackson
the caring sister to Karen
their second time touring
Europe, after a headliner
tour with Whethan, another
New Trier grad-turned-artist,
last year.
“We go from playing a
room as big as the Aragon
in the United States, and
then you go back across
the pond and you go back
to playing 200-400 people
rooms that are as big as
Lincoln Hall (in Chicago),”
Kennett said.
Although their shows
are smaller in Europe,
Hauldren and Kennett
said their true fans show
up.
the cherished aunt to Nick,
Justin, Annabel and Johnny.
Bidwell graduated from
New Trier East High School
in Winnetka and went on
to receive a sociology degree
from the University of
Montana.
David Christopher
Leath
David Christopher
Leath, 34, a New
Trier graduate, died. He
While on tour, the duo
is “always making things
on the road,” they said, to
possibly put it into a future
album.
“We want to get an album
out before the summer
hopefully next year,”
Kennett said. “I have no
doubt that we’ll be able to
do that. We have so many
ideas already that feel like
they should be on the album.
I think we are going
to be working pretty hard
the next few months to get
that album together and
done and finished.
“I just really want to
make a really cool debut
album. … We want to hit
a lot of different sides of
Louis the Child and keep
was the beloved son of
Vaughn ‘Chuck’ and Denise
Leath nee Gerbi, loving
brother of the late John
Charles Leath, dear nephew
of Bruce (Diana) Gerbi;
Marilyn (the late Milton)
Honea and William M.
(Marsha) Leath and fond
cousin of many. Leath was
a graduate of New Trier
High School and Columbia
College of Chicago and
was a project manager at S
Construction Company.
exploring to capture new
feelings.”
If the wait till next summer
is too long, catch Louis
the Child on their own
radio show “Playground
Radio” on Sirus XM’s
Diplo Revolution.
On their show every
other Monday, the duo
“picks out a bunch of
songs that we’ve been listening
to all week and we
get to show them to the
world on the radio station.”
“It’s wild,” Hauldren
said, “because there are
so many little things like
this radio show that have
happened in our career
that you never would have
thought would happen.”
