We’re back after our break and very much<br />
hoping that you all had a great summer.<br />
<strong>Heywood</strong> and <strong>Hopwood</strong> is such a vibrant<br />
community and so many of our articles represent<br />
the wealth of involvement by local volunteers in<br />
the area over the summer months.<br />
Sandra Trickett looks back on the <strong>Heywood</strong><br />
Charities Fete which took place in the summer and<br />
was attended by 100’s of local people who lined<br />
the streets to watch the ‘animal themed’ parade.<br />
<strong>Heywood</strong> resident and photographer David<br />
England has produced a calendar with some<br />
amazing photos of birds in Queens Park, he’s<br />
selling copies for £5 each with all monies raised<br />
going to Friends of Queen Park and Melanoma<br />
UK, full details are on page 38. This month’s<br />
issue also features some great photos taken by<br />
David England of the Flying Scotsman, when it<br />
recently came to <strong>Heywood</strong>.<br />
We also have information about the great<br />
selection of Walk and Talk Groups around<br />
Rochdale, providing different grades of walks<br />
which are free for all.<br />

Fete & Carnival<br />
This year’s annual <strong>Heywood</strong> Charities Fete was<br />
a huge success with hundreds of people lining the<br />
streets to watch the colourful “animal’ themed parade<br />
which began at Sefton Street ending at Queen’s Park.<br />
Kats Dance Academy, with the help of Blue Rose Gifts<br />
balloon art, won the Award for the best walking entry.<br />
Following the parade, the fun carried on into Queen’s<br />
Park. Entertainment was provided throughout the<br />
afternoon on the newly repaired bandstand by many<br />
young and talented <strong>Heywood</strong>-based music and dance<br />
artists who provided top class performances to please<br />
the crowds.<br />
Profits from the Fete will as usual be distributed to<br />
local charities and voluntary groups to benefit the<br />
people of <strong>Heywood</strong>. The <strong>Heywood</strong> Charities Fete<br />
Committee would like to thank everyone who supported<br />
the event with a stall or entry into the parade. A big<br />
thank you to the Stormtroopers of the 501st UK Garrison<br />
for coming along without charge and also to the people<br />
of <strong>Heywood</strong> for supporting local charities on the day.<br />

<strong>Heywood</strong> in Bloom Gardening Tips For <strong>October</strong><br />
1. Sow Grass Seeds Prepare the soil well, digging it over<br />
removing all weeds before raking it smooth and level.<br />
Sow the seeds thinly and evenly, then keep all feet<br />
dogs and children off until there’s a 7-10cm growth,<br />
it can then be lightly mown.<br />
2. Deadheading Dahlias, cosmos and even late roses<br />
will produce more flower buds as long as fading<br />
blooms are promptly removed. Use sharp secateurs,<br />
cut back to the side of the shoot below the flower<br />
that you are snipping off.<br />
3. Mow Flower Meadows If you have a flower meadow<br />
or a patch of rough grass, cut it back now. It’s good<br />
to leave the hay to dry and shed wildflower seeds<br />
before composting it. With meadows planted with<br />
annuals make sure all seed has been self-sown before<br />
removing the scruffy dead material. Some seeds will<br />
germinate in autumn the rest will sprout next spring.<br />
4. Plant up Bulbs Now is the time to plant up<br />
Hyacinths and other bulbs for indoor winter<br />
displays. The nose or top of each bulb should be<br />
level with the compost surface. Water the<br />
containers then move to a cold dark place. They<br />
will be ready to bring indoors when the shoots are<br />
2-3cm high. When you introduce them to the light<br />
and heat do so gently. Place them in a cold room<br />
first until the shoots have turned green. Once<br />
they are visibly growing, you can move the bowls<br />
to a warmer room.<br />
5. Wallflowers This is the season to plant wallflowers.<br />
In September or <strong>October</strong> plant them in containers<br />
or beds where they will flower from late March to<br />
late May. Plant your wallflowers in well dug soil<br />
space them about 30cm apart in a sunny position.<br />

RETURNS TO HEYWOOD<br />
The 21st of August saw the return of the Flying Scotsman to <strong>Heywood</strong><br />
having to cross Green Lane to enter <strong>Heywood</strong> Station and the ELR.<br />
During her first couple of days down in the Locomotive sheds at Bury the<br />
volunteer staff set to making a stirling effort to rid her of all the dirt and<br />
grime collected whilst on the mainline running charters.<br />
One of the volunteers was heard to remark “It is the nation’s Locomotive<br />
and we want her looking her best when she<br />
steams on the East Lancashire Railway.<br />
We in <strong>Heywood</strong> were privileged to have her<br />
travel into <strong>Heywood</strong> on four consecutive days<br />
over the bank holiday, three times per day.<br />
This was not the end though; she was back in<br />
steam again three times a day into <strong>Heywood</strong><br />
on the days 5th to 8th of September. The<br />
highlight of her stay on the East Lancashire<br />
Railway was to be the ‘Wells Flier’ a special<br />
charter leaving Bury on the 15th September<br />
picking up at <strong>Heywood</strong>, Manchester Victoria,<br />
Newton-le-Willows and Warrington before<br />
heading to Llandudno and terminating at<br />
Holyhead, returning the same day.<br />
Unfortunately this special charter was<br />
cancelled at the last minute due to urgent<br />
engineering work that needed to be carried<br />
out, outside Victoria Station on the 15th.<br />
This was a big disappointment to all who had<br />
booked, but also this was a money raiser to<br />
put funds into the buying of the City of Wells<br />
locomotive to keep it on the ELR.<br />

grades of walks, between 1 and 2 hours<br />
duration, throughout the local countryside and<br />
are led by Volunteer Walk Leaders.<br />

suitable for people who have not walked much<br />
before, are looking to be more active or are<br />
returning from injury or illness.<br />
Walking for Health Grade 2 walk -<br />
suitable for people who are looking to increase<br />
their activity levels.<br />

for people looking for more challenging walks<br />
and increasing their level of physical activity.<br />

The <strong>Heywood</strong> Queens Park Walk and Talk Group meet at Queens Park Cafe for grade one and<br />

a great way to get fit and healthy but to meet and socialise with others. The walks are free, friendly<br />
and everyone is welcome. We have walkers of all abilities from people just starting to enjoy an<br />
accompanied walk to seasoned ramblers.<br />
Recently three members of our Milnrow Walk and Talk Group completed the 256 Mile Pennine Way<br />
Walk in aid of Cancer Research UK. An illustrated booklet of the journey is available<br />
