él, pues lo he conocido!
como “Ramon’s Miracle on
31st Street” (o Navidad en el
Barrio).
únete a UNITED FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Nuestra
región depende del turismo y todos
dependemos de todos para que esto
funcione.
Escribo esto gozando de la playa en
Saint George Island en el condado
de Franklin cerca de Apalachicola.
Michael afectó mucho a los vecinos al
este de aquí. En poco más de un mes
después de la tormenta, las áreas se
han recuperado notablemente. Cómo
Turismo
Tourism
Hablemos de Turismo
Por Martin Owen
los del condado de Franklin CVB han
dicho, todos fueron heridos—algunos
mucho—pero regresarán más fuertes
que antes.
Ese es el mensaje de agradecimiento
que debemos promover, de ambas
formas, cuando recordamos el año
en general y en relación con la
tormenta. Nuestras comunidades y
nuestra industria turística son fuertes
y resistentes. Como Jimmy Buffet
dice: “Respira, exhala… avanza.”
Me pareció
una buena manera de pensarlo. Pone
énfasis en cómo nosotros, en la
hospitalidad y turismo, tratamos a
nuestros visitantes.
nuestra comunidad.
Es interesante como los visitantes
invernales cambian la forma de
hacer sus vacaciones. Antes se
contentaban con permanecer en un
lugar para relajarse, pero ahora son
más activos. Visitan diferentes áreas
en su ‘migración’ invernal y quieren
participar en la gran variedad de
actividades que tenemos; todas—desde
kayaking y golf—hasta compras y
cenas. El cambio en estas practicas
significa que antes las aves invernales
eran personas jubiladas, mientras que
ahora puede ser gente que todavía
trabaja o trabajan parte del tiempo. Así
que gracias al Internet pueden trabajar
adonde vayan lo que ¡los convierte en
locales temporales!
Desde el punto de vista turístico,
agradecemos las partes buenas del
2018, que felizmente son muchas.
Pidamos una Navidad y un Nuevo Año
tranquilos además de un maravilloso
2019.
¡Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo!
Let’s Talk About Tourism
By Martin Owen
It’s the time of year for reflecting on the
past 12 months and looking forward
to the next. As I’m writing this over
the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s also an
opportunity to recognize all the things
for which we need to be thankful. For
those of us involved with tourism, that’s
an awful lot!
On the whole 2018 has been a great
year for tourism here on the northern
Gulf Coast. Visitor numbers have
been up and that has resulted in good
levels of bed-tax collection, which
can be used for future promotion and
tourism related infrastructure projects.
Employment is up and, in fact, we need
more industry professionals than we’ve
ever had before. The tourist seasons
have also been extended, which is good
for year-round employment.
Of course, the arrival of Hurricane
Michael in October was a disaster
for many parts of our area without
any doubt. The devastation around
Panama City, Mexico Beach, and
the surrounding communities is
continued next page
heartbreaking. Thankfully the whole
Northern Gulf Coast community has
come together to support and assist
those in most need. This applies not
only to humanitarian needs, but the
tourism authorities along the coast,
together with Visit Florida, The Florida
Restaurant & Lodging Association,
and others are working to promote the
region as a whole. The aim is to ensure
that everyone knows that the area is
open for business, and that even though
some places are not yet ready, we will
all work to bring them back, stronger
than before, as soon as possible. Our
region is dependent on tourism and we
are all dependent on each other to make
it all work.
As I write this, I’m sitting on the
beach of St George Island in Franklin
County, near Apalachicola. Along
with neighbors slightly to the east,
they were impacted hard by Michael.
In just over a month since the storm,
the areas have made a remarkable
recovery. As the Franklin County CVB
have said, everyone was bruised—and
some badly—but they will come back
stronger than before.
That’s the ‘thankful’ message we have
to stress, both in looking back over
the year in general and in relation
to the storm. Our communities and
our tourism industry are strong and
resilient. To quote Jimmy Buffett,
“Breathe in, breathe out… move on”.
Which brings me to Christmas wishes
and thoughts for next year…
Naturally, we all hope for 2019 to be
a year without any ‘wind events’ or
threats like Red Tide, which had a
major effect on tourism in South West
Florida. Of course, all of us need to be
prepared to deal with these things. I
guess it’s all part of living in paradise!
We should look forward to promoting
our region as a friendly, safe, and
beautiful place to vacation, not just
in the mid-summer months, but
www.conexionflorida.com
throughout the year. Our Convention
and Visitor’s Bureaus along the coast
are all working on promoting to new
markets around the country and even
outside the USA. That’s good news for
everyone.
Christmas and New Year holidays are a
reminder of the huge number of visitors
who come to the area at this time of
year. Some come just for a few days,
but others—The Snow Birds—stay for
a few weeks. Only this morning I was
speaking to a lady who comes here
every year to escape colder weather
up north. Her feeling was that she was
a ‘local’ here, who lived some of the
year elsewhere! I thought that was
a nice way of thinking. It highlights
how we, in hospitality and tourism,
treat our visitors. We extend the gift
of friendship and hospitality to the
tourists considering them as guests not
just an opportunity to make money. We
welcome them to share our piece of
paradise and treat them as valued parts
of the community.
Interestingly, those winter visitors are
changing how they vacation. They used
to be content to stay in one place and
relax, but now they are being more
active. They visit different areas in
their winter ‘migration’ and want to
experience the wide variety of activities
we have; everything—from kayaking
and golf—to shopping and dining.
The change in work practices means
that while most snowbirds used to be
retired folks, nowadays they can still be
working or semi-retired. So, thanks to
the Internet they are able to work from
wherever they are. That makes them
even more like temporary locals!
From a tourism viewpoint, let’s be
thankful for the good parts of 2018 of
which there were many. Let’s wish for a
calm and peaceful Christmas and New
Year period and let’s look forward to a
wonderful 2019.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
¿Que Pasa Tally?
For Those Grieving
This Holiday Season
By Sheryl H. Boldt, www.TodayCanBeDifferent.net
Losing someone
you love is
incredibly hard. And now the holidays
are upon you. That empty chair,
with all its memories and sentiment,
now seems to be the largest piece of
furniture in your home.
Tasks, any tasks, especially holidayrelated
ones, are overwhelming. You try
not to allow your sadness to dampen
the spirits of everyone around you,
especially those who share your grief,
but many days you fail.
You appreciate the friends who want
to be there for you, those who want to
ease your pain – even those who don’t
have a clue what to say. This includes
me. What words can I offer to help you
through this painful, “most wonderful
time of the year”?
I know some of you personally. Others,
I read about your pain in emails and on
Facebook. I’m desperate to lighten your
sadness, but I fear my feeble words will
sound glib and only add to your sorrow.
So, I’m praying for God to show me
how to be there for you. And when
that’s not possible, how I can pray
for you. I’m asking God what to do
and how to pray when you can’t stop
crying, when you’re tempted to scream
out of anger and exhaustion – and
when you actually do.
Would it help if I were to also pray for
you to experience God’s presence and
provision as described in Psalm 23:1
(AMPC)?
“The LORD is my Shepherd [to feed,
guide, and shield me], I shall not lack.”
As I pray, I’ll trust that our
compassionate, sympathetic and
ever-present Shepherd will help you
make it through each day. That you’ll
experience God’s compassion and love
as He provides for you and guides you.
And I will believe that at the end of
every long, long day, you’ll be able to
sleep, sensing His protection over you.
God bless you, dear friend. Please let
me (and everyone who loves you) know
how we can be there for you – not just
during this holiday season, but for as
long as you need us.
A Piece of the Puzzle
America’s Road Trip in Florida on
the Old Spanish Trail
By Deborah Desilets, Tallahassee based Author, Historian & Architect
I was raised in Tallahassee Florida, 6
miles down from the State capital on
a section of farm land where the red
clay road met Hwy 27 and the backyard
bordered on the swampy edge of the
Old Spanish Trail. The cow pastures
beyond in all directions let me know
I was on a farm. Mother let me roam
these haunts and soon I walked to
Nichols store where I could better see
the road—feel her energy—and view
license plates that held place names
that became a living geography for
me. People came here on a shared road
like mine. And on that road people
smiled waved blew a horn to my
wave or gesture. The roads were alive
and electric, they held energy. And I
wondered – How did all these roads
come to be?
Over the years, road trips took me from
Florida to Rhode Island, or South to
Fort Myers. And Mom would take us on
a summer vacation or spring break at
Panama City boardwalk. The nuns took
me to see St Augustine and Pensacola.
As an architect I travelled to see
Disney: more roads to follow and then
interstates and by the mid 80’s when I
took a job at ARQUITECTONICA in
Miami, where we were working on the
Florida Marriott turnpike stations! All
these roads grew up as living arteries a
blood line for me and kin and for all of
us. But still how did it all come to be?
Over a ten-year period, I met various
men who helped me answer this.
By 1995, in my Miami Beach office
on Lincoln Road, my wise old friend
Morris Lapidus, surprised me with,
“Don’t forget Carl Graham Fisher!”
Of course, he was talking about THE
Carl Graham Fisher who following
his success with the Lincoln Highway
– the first transcontinental road in the
North U.S. – Fisher began the making
of Miami Beach, and his petite version
of the nations Lincoln Road. He named
his new city streets after his and his
wife’s home town of Indianapolis.
Soon a bridge to Miami from Miami
Beach was finished and for the future
www.conexionflorida.com
avocado King John Collins could share
his crop. By 1915, America’s need
for good roads South was mounting
interest. Carl Graham Fisher with
“A Call to Patriots” at a Governors
convention proposed the 5,575-mile
beltway through Middle America. This
ultimately would include the states of
Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky,
Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. With
two Governor Appointees from each
state, they ALL planned together a
unified route south. This road which
might have been called The Cotton Belt,
but instead was nostalgically named
the Dixie Highway to honor President
Lincoln’s favorite song. For America—
The Dixie Highway –signified by “DH”
between red and white stripe markers
was placed on route telephone poles
by the Boy Scouts of America. The
Dixie Highway became the interior
communication and transportation
routes under the slogan “Making
Neighbors of us all.” Entrepreneurs,
general stores,” mom and pop shops’,
mechanics, car drivers, industrialists,
automotive suppliers, business men, car
salesmen and hobbyists joined the race
for Good Roads in America. At that
time the World Almanac noted it a as
the “worlds most pretentious project” a
project that would impact 40,000,000
people and cross 163 counties through
eight states. So clear was this vision of
Carl Graham Fisher, that 10,000 people
came from all over Florida to hear
Governor Jennings speak in favor of it;
Governor Trammel would support it and
later Governor Martin endorse it with
the Florida Road Department money
paying for it from the new legislated gas
tax.
Now it is important to point out how did
Carl Graham Fisher do this?
America’s Road trip began with Ford
and on every Ford were two of Carl
Graham Fisher’s acetylene headlights.
Perfecting with Jim Allison the use of
compressed gas in headlights, Prest-
Creando tu mejor
año, 2019
Por Barbara Britt
Barbara Britt, LLC: 850-621-7709; barbarajbritt@gmail.com
Ahora que ya sabes dónde has estado,
podremos entender el 2019 y hacerlo
más manejable. Nunca es un error
construir con excelencia. Pregúntate a
llegada a tu destino inevitable.”
Durante este mes de diciembre
establece el destino para el 2019.
Más del 80% de los estadounidenses
hacen resoluciones de Año Nuevo,
sin embargo sólo un 8% las cumple.
Haz que este año sea diferente
personalmente y profesionalmente
al establecer los siguientes pasos de
acción.
Durante los siguientes 30 días,
individualmente pasa tu tiempo
estableciendo un destino. Primero, mira
lo que este año te trajo. Si no usaste un
calendario de papel, entonces divide el
año en trimestres para recrear el 2018.
Fíjate en estas 3 áreas cuando lo hagas.
1. ¿Qué funcionó y qué te ayudó
a prosperar personalmente y
profesionalmente?
2. ¿A quién le permitiste que
te influenciara positivamente o
negativamente?
3. ¿Qué lograste este año que te
gustaría seguir haciendo el próximo
año? ¿Qué ajustes necesitas hacer?
“La competencia más grande soy
yo mismo. No busco seguir a otros
o traerlos abajo. Deseo probar mis
propios límites.”
~ Rain ~
optimas:
1. Graba tus metas, visión y
oportunidades.
2. ¿Cuáles son los pasos necesarios
para alcanzarlas?
3. ¿Estas dispuest@ a tomar los pasos
necesarios para lograrlo?
4. ¿Eres capaz de explicar, escribir
y compartir con otras personas tus
intenciones?
“La productividad nunca es por
accidente. Siempre es el resultado
del compromiso a la excelencia, el
planeamiento inteligente y el esfuerzo
enfocado.” Paul J. Meyer
Creating Your Best Year 2019
By Barbara Britt
“When you establish a destination
by defining what you want, then take
physical action by making choices that
move you towards that destination, the
possibility for success is limitless and
arrival at the destination is inevitable.”
~ Steve Maraboli ~
Make the month of December the time
you establish a destination for 2019.
Over 80% of Americans make New
Year’s Resolutions. However, only 8%
actually realize them. Make this year
different personally and professionally
by establishing the following action
steps.
For the next 30 days, spend your time
individually, establishing a destination
by first looking back over what this year
has brought you. If you have not kept a
paper calendar, then take the last year
and break it down into quarters and
recreate 2018. Look into these three
areas when recreating your year.
1. What worked and helped you prosper
personally and professionally?
2. Who did you allow to influence you
positively or negatively?
3. What did you accomplish this year
that you want to move forward with
for next year? What needs
adjustment?
The biggest competition is myself. I
am not looking to follow others or pull
them down. I’m planning to test my
own boundaries.” ~ Rain ~
5 Quick Tips for Getting
Out of Your Own Way
Source: Express Employment Professional’s Refresh Leadership
Focus on positive self-talk
There’s a lot to be said for the power
of suggestion on the human brain.
In a study on the effects of positive
self-talk, researchers in the UK,
tested nearly 45,000 participants
via an online game and found those
participants who engaged in positive
self-talk, were more likely to achieve
the top scores. So, it makes sense that
taking a more optimistic approach to
how you frame your thinking can help
you move past the mental roadblocks
that often get in the way of progress.
The next time you hit a low point
when working on a project, keep
this quote from Henry Ford in mind,
“whether you think you can, or you
think you can’t—you’re right.” Then
take a moment to realign your thought
to focus on the positive.
Break a sweat
According to the Harvard Business
Review, studies have directly linked
mental performance to physical
activity. Additionally, regular exercise
has also been shown to have a positive
effect on mood. From the HBR
article, “… over the past decade,
social scientists have quietly amassed
compelling evidence suggesting that
there is another, more immediate
benefit of regular exercise: its impact
on the way we think. Studies indicate
that our mental firepower is directly
linked to our physical regimen. And
nowhere are the implications more
relevant than to our performance at
work.”
Even if it’s simply doing a couple
walking laps around your building,
sneaking away for a quick 15 – 30
minutes of physical activity may be
just the boost you need to get out of
your head and refocus on the tasks at
hand.
Ask for help
We’re often our own worst enemy.
When you’ve poured so much of
your own blood, sweat, and tears into
a project, it can be difficult to admit
you’ve hit a wall and are unable to
find a path forward. High achievers
are often the last to admit that they
need a helping hand, but you must
learn to set aside your pride and be
okay with reaching out to a co-worker
or colleague for an assist. Often, the
different perspective an outsider can
bring to a project is enough to spark a
new idea, kick start a stalled project,
or refocus your priorities.
We’ve all been there. Working on a big
project or new initiative, when all of a
sudden progress comes to a grinding
halt, and you’re struggling to find the
motivation to keep moving forward.
Often, it’s an outside influence that
throws everything off track, like a
client changing their mind about the
objectives of the project or a legal
hurdle that affects how a new initiative
is implemented.
Other times, however, we get in our
own way.
From procrastination to changing
interests to becoming overwhelmed
by the scope of a project, there are
many ways to get stuck in your own
head. So, it’s important to have an
effective coping mechanism ready
when such situations arise, so you can
get refocused, reenergized, and back
on track. Check out these five tips for
getting out of your own way.
Complete a few small, easy tasks first
Nothing motivates like a win. In
fact, there’s a biological explanation
for what happens when we chalk
up a “W.” In his book “The Winner
Effect,” psychology professor Ian
Robertson writes, “Winning increases
testosterone, which in turn increases
the chemical messenger dopamine, and
that dopamine hits the reward network
in the brain, which makes us feel
better.”
So, start your days off on the right foot
by taking on a few smaller projects that
you can finish quickly and check off
your list. Once you have a few wins in
the book, you’ll be more energized to
take on the day’s bigger objectives.
Put it in perspective
Sometimes, when the going gets
tough, it’s easy to get frustrated and
completely lose touch with why a
project is even worth the mental
anguish. In such cases, it’s important
to put the situation in perspective. Ask
yourself these questions:
Why are you doing this? Who are
you doing it for? What are the
consequences if you don’t finish?
If after answering each question
honestly, you still feel disconnected
from your main objectives, it may be
time to reassess the efficacy of the
project altogether and build a new
strategy for moving forward.
¿…Por qué estáis mirando al cielo?
Este mismo Jesús, que ha sido
tomado de vosotros al cielo, así
vendrá como lo habéis visto ir al
cielo. (Hechos 1:11)
soberanía reposará sobre sus hombros;
y se llamará su nombre Admirable
Consejero, Dios Poderoso, Padre
(Lucas
2:40)
A los 30 años de edad, el
Señor Jesucristo comienza su
ministerio terrenal. (Lucas 3:23) y
Aproximadamente a los 33 años
muere en la cruz. El Padre había dado
esta orden y Jesús estuvo dispuesto a
cumplirla.
¡Feliz Navidad a
Todos y Cuídese!
Por Marcos Otero - Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center,
Fort Walton Beach
Feliz Navidad. Increíble lo rápido
que se ha pasado este año. Este mes
estará lleno de alegría y felicidad.
Quiero que todos tengamos recuerdos
seguros y felices.
alimentos cocidos. Lávese las manos
y séquelas bien antes de preparar
cualquier alimento y después de
Accidentes en el
hogar: casi 100,000
personas se lesionan
durante este tiempo,
abriendo regalos se
cortan, electrocutarse
en luces de Navidad
defectuosas, a
caídas montando
decoraciones.
Incendios
domésticos: no es
Navidad sin luces ni
velas festivas, pero ambos son peligros
de incendio. Las velas solas provocaron
múltiples incendios en las casas. Evítelo
utilizando siempre luces funcionales.
Nunca deje velas o luces encendidas sin
vigilancia.
Ataques de asma: el clima frío, el
estrés, el humo de las chimeneas, los
perfumes y las velas aromáticas pueden
desencadenar ataques de asma.
Quedarse sin medicamentos: le
sorprendería saber cuántas personas
se olvidan de empacar o de obtener
suficientes medicamentos para las
vacaciones. Asegúrese de que, si viaja
o se queda en casa, tenga suficientes
medicamentos para los días en que las
farmacias estén cerradas.
Intoxicación con alimentos: durante
las fiestas, las personas cocinan
alimentos que generalmente no cocinan
y generalmente no cocinan para un gran
manejar carne cruda. Deje tiempo
suficiente para descongelar su pavo; los
grandes pueden tomar un par de días.
Descongelar pavos en la nevera.
Alcohol: Muchos tomarán bebidas
alcohólicas. Sea inteligente. Mantenerse
a salvo. SI BEBES NO CONDUZCAS.
Merry Christmas To All
And Be Careful!
By Marcos Otero - Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center, Fort Walton Beach
Merry Christmas. Unbelievable
how quickly this year has flown
by. This month will be full
of joy and happiness. I want
all of us to have a safe and
happy memories. Christmas,
New Years and Three Kings
day festivities are rapidly
approaching. The holidays are
actually on top of the list for
problems. Hospital admissions
rise up between December 19
and the New Year. There are several
things that can ruin your holidays.
Accidents at home: almost 100,000
people get hurt during this time from
cuts opening presents, to electrocuting
themselves on faulty Christmas lights,
to falls putting up decorations.
House fires - It not Christmas without
lights or festive candles but both are fire
hazards. Candles alone sparked multiple
house fires. Prevent it by always using
approved and functional lights. Never
leaves candles or lights on unattended.
Asthma attacks – Cold weather, stress,
smoke from fire places, perfumes, and
scented candles may trigger asthma
attacks.
Running out of medications: You
would be surprised as to how many
people forget to pack or get enough
medications for the holidays. Make sure
if you are traveling or staying at home
that you have enough medications to
last for those days that pharmacies may
be closed.
Food poisoning: During parties, people
cook foods they usually do not cook
and they usually do not cook for large
numbers of people. Foods left out or
not cooked enough or left standing can
form toxins. Always put raw meat at the
bottom of the fridge so the juices, which
may contain food-poisoning bacteria,
can’t drip down, contaminating cooked
food. Wash your hands and dry them
thoroughly before preparing any food
and after handling raw meat. Allow
adequate time to defrost your turkey –
large ones can take a couple of days.
Defrost turkeys in the fridge.
Alcohol: Many will partake in alcoholic
beverages. Be smart. Stay safe. DO
NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. It will ruin
you holidays to spend these in jail or
worse in a morgue. Before drinking, eat
food containing complex carbohydrates,
protein and fat. Try to drink water in
between, or alongside, alcoholic drinks
and if you drink spirits, dilute them
with juice rather than fizzy drinks,
which increase the rate at which alcohol
is absorbed into your blood.
My family and myself want to wish you
a blessed Christmas and Happy New
Year. May the holidays be full of love,
joy, and happiness. Be blessed.
Servicio, Caridad, Unidad
Service, Giving, Unity
¡Una Costa Esmeralda UNIDA!
David Triana
tantos individuos, negocios, grupos
cívicos y organizaciones que donan su
tiempo y dinero para ayudar.
Si no fuera por las 100 millas, más
o menos, nuestra área ahora se
encontraría en la misma situación en la
que se encuentran nuestros vecinos al
este y noreste desde el 10 de octubre.
Si no fuera por las 100 millas,
NOSOTROS estaríamos tratando de
recuperarnos de la destrucción de
nuestros hogares, negocios, iglesias,
escuelas y posiblemente, después
de un mes, todavía estuviéramos sin
electricidad o agua, otros sin empleo o
viviendo en comunidades de carpas o
lonas de plástico.
Es abrumador ver o pensar que tales
condiciones existen en nuestra área
paradisiaca, pero muy cerca de nosotros
esto es precisamente lo que ocurre en
estos momentos. De cada tragedia,
siempre hay algo bueno que puede
suceder.
comunidad.
Extiendo mi agradecimiento personal a
nuestra Costa Esmeralda UNIDA.
asistencia a personas
sin importar su
religión, raza o estatus
migratorio.
• La Cruz Roja es una
entidad de caridad y
no una agencia del
gobierno y personas
afectadas por un
desastre no tienen
Altar’d State, a women‘s fashion alternative
recently presented Children in Crisis a check for
$3,882.75 to help provide a home and care to
the abused, neglected and abandoned children
of the local community. The donation funds
were collected by the Altar’d State employee
volunteer program called “Mission Monday.”
According to Ken Hair, CIC President & CEO, “We
opened the Children’s Neighborhood in February 2008
and since then; we’ve provided a home to about 875 Kids and have kept
all of our brother and sister sibling group families together. We continue
to have a critical need for funds to help sustain operations and care for the
at-risk children of our community. We can’t thank the employees of Altar’d
State enough for their wonderful support.”
CIC is a 501, (c), (3) non-profit community charity of caring people
providing homes and establishing hope to the abused, neglected and
abandoned children of our community. Together we can make a difference
in the life of a child. To learn more about CIC, visit childrenincrisisfl.org,
During an emergency, the Red Cross delivers help to whoever needs it, regardless
of citizenship status. The Red Cross doesn’t see cultural or ethnic backgrounds,
just a person who needs help.
• As part of our humanitarian mission,
the Red Cross will feed, shelter and provide other
forms of support without regard to race, religion
or citizenship status.
• The Red Cross is a charity, not a
government agency, and people who have
disaster-caused needs do not need to be
American citizens to access Red Cross
services.
• The Red Cross will not ask people to show
any form of identification in order to stay
in our shelters.
• We do ask people staying in our shelters for their names
and pre-disaster addresses so that we can track who is using our services.
• In order to receive some Red Cross services, such as meeting with a caseworker
to facilitate disaster recovery, we will need to verify a person’s pre-disaster address.
For people who don’t have government-issued identification, we can usually do this
through alternative means, such as a copy of a utility bill.
Who Wants to Be an Entrepreneur?
• 48% of Americans dream of starting
their own business
• 51% who launch are over 50
• 69% start their business from home
• 51% have been “thinking about it”
for 2 years, 31% for 5 or more years.
www.conexionflorida.com
The top 3 reasons cited for NOT
starting a small business are as
follows:
• People like the security of a steady
income
• Lack of personal savings
• Failure rates for new startups is very
high
Instead of quitting your day job,
consider starting a side business. Work
part-time in the evenings, during your
lunch hour or on the weekends. Make
it a family affair; i.e. get your family
involved and let them have a stake
in the success of your new business
venture. Share your vision of what
this new business could mean to your
family.
Startup funding options are much more
accessible thanks to the internet and
the JOBS Act, but Entrepreneurs still
struggle in this area. They lack the skill
sets to properly “pitch their idea.” Many
startups are born out of necessity, which
means the family has experienced a
financial setback or emergency situation
which could disqualify them for
conventional financing options and pose
too high of a risk for investors. These
Aspiring Entrepreneurs need access
to affordable options and a team of
Mentors to help lead the way.
There are many reasons businesses fail;
but CASHFLOW is at the top of the
list. You can have the best idea, product
or service in the world, generate a ton of
sales, have a customer base filled with
raving fans, but if you don’t have the
cashflow available in your bank account
to pay your bills when they come due,
your business will fail.
Entrepreneurs tend to be overly
optimistic. Even the best budgets for
startup expenses will fall short of
expectations. Unexpected expenses
will show up at the worst possible time.
manufacturing. This in turn led to
Union Carbide a calling and soon the
two men were rich enough for other
ventures. Carl supported the roads and
city development, while James Allison
would make his name with Allison
Transmissions. Famously close friends,
who did everything together, they would
both own the Indy 500 and never break
a sweat in the testing of engines from
INDY to Miami Beach, from the infield
to their watery racing oval at Biscayne
Bay. I met Dudley Whitman who told
me: “They were up to foolishness and
nothing but foolishness! And, they
were great men.” From the North to
the South they improved boat hulls,
engines, transmissions and gear ratios
and experimented with water cooling
systems. Linde enterprise continues to
this day seeded by the humble roots in
Prest-O-Lite to produce rocket fuel.
The world of Carl G Fisher and his
friends was clearly one lead by a
devotion to country. And they put their
money where they could improve it.
Ford did not join in but Firestone,
Edison, Roosevelt, Seiberling,
Chevrolet and Hubbard all did! In Jane
Fisher’s book ‘The Fabulous Hoosier:
A Story of American Achievement”
she details her husband’s efforts toward
building “a unified, secure and safe
nation’ and tells of his “dream to make
neighbors of us all” from the early days
on the dirt roads at Indy to the dirt
roads of Dixie.
It is unfortunate that the Dixie Highway
did not have a part in the building of
West Florida. There are eight counties
in Florida that have been affected by
Hurricane Michael. All of them share
the Old Spanish Trail. All eight have
a long history as a “shared space”.
These are interesting times. Since 2010
I have talked about the Dixie Highway
but in 2017, I was approached by the
spoke person for the Centennial of the
Old Spanish Trail to help her in her
convention in Tallahassee and further
on her convention in San Antonio. In
2029 the 100th anniversary of the Old
Spanish Trail will be reenacted. Until
then enactments are going on in all 8
states across America. Florida is but
one. Now are the times to engage in the
discussions that are going on across the
Southern States in relation to the 500-
year history and the Old Spanish Trail
(the OST). How did it become called
that name? Who made it? When was it
made? When and how was it paved?
Now is a great time – as we rebuild
from Hurricane Michael to make the
challenge to rebuild with our shared
space our shared history, a history
that binds the Sothern States and in a
beltway that is built upon one of the
oldest trails in America. Indeed, the
great migratory beltway for the animals
and ancient people, a wonderful
path for the friars and the warriors;
a beltway that made peace among
people. I advocate a look at our shared
history on the road as we complete
our discussion of good roads. I put out
there now that we should partner with
our neighboring counties and states to
tell our road stories as one long story in
time; celebrate those connections to our
shared past and use that to safeguard
the future unity in our communities
red, white and blue. I do my part. I talk
about the roads as a living geography,
a living study in democracy, as the
metaphor for the freedom to roam that
is experienced in all Great American
Road Trips.
My dear friend, Wilbur Jones was the
first director of the Road Department,
before it was renamed the Florida
Department of Transportation. He
directed the building of the interstates:
he was responsible for the white stripes
on our roads, the green colored signs,
and until his death at 107 did not give
up the fight to keep privatization out of
roads and to guard the gas tax as sacred
monies set aside for roads. His letters
at the end of his life point to a life long
pursuit to keep the roads free. Wilbur
Jones, urged me to study with him the
gas tax. He assured me that it must be
held in sacred trust for the roads and
that now there are politicians taking the
1.5 cent beautification part of the tax
to divert to other things. Well I wish
we would hold the gas tax sacred. And
be as leery of toll roads as he was: we
might note that Texas sold all her toll
roads to China. Toll roads in Florida are
being opened more and more; at least
we must be aware of the effect tolls
have on travel. Wilbur argued against
a new toll road in Tallahassee as a “pet
project of the wealthy”. He rejected
the idea of moving interstate highway
cloverleaf on 1-10 to benefit a new
community; allowing spot zoning and
private business to over ride his good
planning.
My road warriors are varied and their
stories help me to frame the discussion
with timely considerations: as my
mentors Morris Lapidus, Dudley
Whitman and Wilbur Jones all knew
Carl Graham Fisher the man I wanted
so early to know: as how did these roads
get here? Today I have the privilege
of sharing them with you. I, through
friendships and interest, have become
a road warrior too: an advocate for
good roads. I support the spirit of unity
in roadways that Carl Graham Fisher
started. I am a child of his roads. And I
ask: who among us will take this torch:
will stand up for the roads? Protect our
assets and apply monies needed to serve
all of us not the few? Who will keep
our roads a truly “shared space” and
remind us of that long history and tie
the oak trees with the OST red, white
and yellow ribbons?
That is the challenge: who will carry
this torch for good roads into the 21st
century?
Gaby Alcántara-Díaz, socia
el estudio de Leadpages, 2017, el
impulso en las ventas (51,3%) y la
creación de conciencia de marca
(48,4%) son las dos principales
Creating Your Best cont.
In the next several days, take the
out of your work and personal life. It
is hard to test your boundaries unless
you are aware of what you personally
about what you are willing to do. Look
A UNITED Emerald Coast!
By David Triana
SANTA CLAUS DOES EXIST…
and his name is Ramon!
By David Triana
If not for 100 miles or so, our area
now would be going through what our
neighbors to the east and northeast are
struggling with since October 10th!
If not for 100 miles, WE would be the
ones attempting to recover from the
devastation of our homes, businesses,
churches, schools and possibly, even
more than a month later, some of us
would still be without power or water,
others suddenly unemployed or living in
Tent/Tarp cities.
It is overwhelming to see or hear of
such conditions in our paradisiacal area,
but, very close to us, that is precisely
what is occurring! From tragedy, there
is always something good that can
happen. Depending on how we react to
that tragedy, it will make the difference,
either positive or negative, in our lives
and the lives of others around us.
We are blessed with a HUGE
NUMBER of charitable and generous
people, individuals willing to help their
friends, neighbors, and total strangers.
We are blessed with business owners
who are not just about the “mighty
dollar,” but also care deeply about their
community and understand it is that
community that makes it possible for
their businesses to succeed.
The response to the needs of those
affected by Hurricane Michael has once
again shown why the Emerald Coast
community, when it comes to caring for
others, has few equals throughout the
world. There are so many individuals,
businesses, civic groups, and
organizations that are giving of their
time and money to help.
I recently spent some time at a church
in Panama City that was heavily
damaged by the hurricane. How
incredible that, since a few days after
it got struck, and among its damaged
buildings, they are using their parking
lot and have established an impressive
system to provide much needed supplies
to the community around them! While
there, I got a chance to speak to some
volunteers manning the supply stations.
One group was from Crestview, another
from Niceville, and the third was from
Pensacola. Church members and others
from the immediate area were also
helping out. According to one of the
volunteers, “more than 3,000 people
were going through on a daily basis,”
and this was almost a month after the
hurricane!
My utmost respect to those of you
reading this, who as individuals,
business owners or leaders, have taken
the time to “do something to help.”
Many people in our nation think we are
a divided nation and to some extent I
agree. But I think our Emerald Coast
is an example of many regions that
our country can emulate. In the midst
of tragedy, we have once again shown
that generosity, charity, and UNITY are
better choices for a community to make.
I extend a personal thanks to Adron
Bailey of B’s Smoking BBQ,
Primerica’s Neil Tabot and his friend
Larry, to Rebecca Koelzer and other
businesses and persons, too many to
mention. Believe me, your generosity
has helped many in the Panama City
area and beyond.
GRACIAS… for being a part of our
UNITED Emerald Coast.
Christmas time is here! There are people
who “no longer believe” in Santa Claus,
but I do believe in him, for I have met
him! His name is Ramón González and
he lives in South Tucson, Arizona!
In 1970, seeing that the parents of the
children where he lived did not have
money to buy gifts at Christmas, it
occurred to Ramon that he could do
something for the children to receive
something that Christmas.
Ramon didn’t have a lot of money either,
but with what he had, he bought hot
dogs and other things and organized
a Christmas party and invited all the
families in his neighborhood. In addition
to the food, he made sure to buy some
toys for each child. It was that way, that
Santa Ramon, founded what is now known
as “Ramon’s Miracle on 31st Street” (or
Christmas in the Barrio).
For many years, the “party” that Santa
Ramon founded, has served more than
10.000 children every December and
Santa Ramon and his family, are the ones
that motivate that entire area of Arizona to
UNITE to ensure that low-income children
receive something at Christmas.
My wife and I had the honor of
volunteering at Ramon’s party for several
years while we were at the Davis-Monthan
Air Force Base in Tucson.
In 2005, along with several
kind-hearted people, we
founded in Fort Walton
Beach, a party inspired
by Ramon’s “miracle”
in Tucson. This party
is called “The Emerald
Coast Christmas Miracle”
and this December 16th,
the 14th edition of it
will take place. See the
announcement on the main
page of this edition for
more details and help us
get word out to low-income
families in our area.
The purpose of the party is
to give everyone who goes,
especially children, the
opportunity to just have a
good time and so that lowincome
families can enjoy
a merry Christmas!
There are thousands of
children in need in our area, countless
families who simply do not have the
means to give their children gifts during
Christmas. Our organization, through the
party, gives us, and gives you, the chance
to be SANTA CLAUS!
We invite you to be part of this great
work, join UNITED for a GOOD CAUSE
INC., even if it’s just for that day of the
party. You can volunteer or donate a toy
or funds.
Santa Claus DOES EXIST, Santa is “in
You” and all those people who from the
heart, care about their neighbor, the people
who during this Christmas time DECIDE
to do something for others and especially
for children and low-income families.
Families who, without you, SANTA XXX,
would not have the opportunities that
many of us have.
