Councillors
clash over
dangerous
intersection
upgrades
CITY COUNCILLORS are in a
battle over which intersection on
Harewood Rd needs to be upgraded
first.
The clash took place when the
Harewood Rd Corridor Study was
presented to the city council on
Thursday.
Councillors Aaron
Keown and Mike
Davidson sparred
over the report’s
contents. Cr Keown
said the paper
was not credible
as it downplayed
the danger of the
Harewood, Breens
and Gardiners Rds intersection.
Aaron
Keown
“I have a lot of problems with the
report, because I feel this report
has been put together to get a
particular outcome for a particular
intersection.”
Cr Keown has been battling to get
lights installed at the intersection
since the issue saw him re-elected to
the city council in 2016.
He says there are several
discrepancies within the findings in
terms of crashes at the Harewood,
Gardiners and Breens Rds
junction that made it seem like
the intersection did not need an
upgrade. •Turn to page 8
I CAN sympathise with Tim Sintes, who
has been struck down with pneumonia
(pages 13 and 15).
The all-round good guy from Southshore
has been laid very low in recent weeks.
I know exactly how he is feeling. Pneumonia smashed me
about 18 months ago. I don’t smoke and I’m reasonably fit. And
like Tim, I’ve no idea how I got it.
I lost 9kg in just over a week, spent four days in hospital and
was off work for three weeks (the longest time I have ever been).
The doctor initially said I had a dose of the flu and I was sent
on my way. A week later when I struggled back to the doctor, she
dispatched me to hospital.
Be careful out there.
Speaking at the symbolic
anniversary of Armistice Day last
month to commemorate 100 years
of peace since the ending of World
War 1 was a special moment.
It’s important that every year we
acknowledge those who made the
ultimate sacrifice to give us the
freedom and choices we enjoy
today. The lessons learnt from that
awful war, called the Great War
because it was inconceivable that
another war would ever be waged
on that scale, are as relevant today
as they were then.
I enjoyed meeting the teams
at Pegasus Health and Rural
Canterbury PHO with National’s
Associate Health Spokesperson
Shane Reti recently. We heard
about some great initiatives to
support rural health and Pegasus
Health in Christchurch briefed us
on their work supporting general
practices and community-based
health providers. It’s important
this work on the frontier of mentalhealth
delivery in our communities
is supported by all parties.
We know that Kiwi families
should be at the centre of our
legislation if we’re to deliver policies
that help people get ahead. Rising
living costs have long-reaching
effects on families being able to
plan for their futures. We want
families to feel safe and financially
secure, and have access to good
health and education services.
We’re asking families to participate
in a survey about how we can
support you. Go to https://www.
national.org.nz/families to take part.
I’ll be out and about over the
Christmas break as my family and I
have decided to enjoy a staycation,
appreciating the beaches and
walks on our doorstep. Whether
you stay at home or go away,
from my family to yours I wish you
a wonderful holiday season and
a New Year of good health and
wellbeing.

Church opposing same-sex
marriage sets up in Papanui
• By Matt Slaughter
A NEW church for people who
split from the Christchurch
Anglican Diocese after its
decision to allow same-sex
marriage has held its first service
in Papanui.
The newly re-branded All
Saints Church met at the Palmer
Funeral Chapel on
Harewood Rd.
The service was
led by former St
Stephen’s Anglican
Church vicar Jay
Behan, who was a
Andy
Carley
guest preacher.
He said the
service was
attended by almost
50 people and was “a good,
positive get-together.”
Rev Behan stepped down from
St Stephen’s in May, saying he
was saddened by the synod’s
decision to embrace same-sex
marriage, as his congregation
had not “been able to come
to an arrangement where, in
good conscience, we can move
forward together.”
Former St Paul’s Anglican
Church vicar Andy Carley gave
his last service at the church last
Sunday and will now step in as
the leader of All Saints Church.
The St Paul’s congregation
voted in May to stay with the
Christchurch Anglican Diocese,
in spite of its new stance on
same-sex marriage, with 70
per cent voting in favour of the
status quo.
The decision to allow same-sex
marriages was criticised by Rev
Carley, who previously called
the move “a step in the wrong
direction.”
Armed with a new logo and
name, All Saints is calling its
church “a new expression of
new All Saints
Church
service at
the Palmer
Funeral
Chapel.
Anglicanism.”
Rev Carley refused to
talk about the new church.
Said Christchurch
Anglican Diocesan manager
Edwin Boyce: “We recognise
their desire to begin a new
ministry and we wish them
well.”
Mia ready to make her
mark on politics
• By Ashleigh Monk
ARMED WITH a love for
science, technology and politics,
16-year-old Mia Wright is ready
to make her mark.
The St Margaret’s College
student has been selected to
represent National list MP Nicky
Wagner as a youth MP in the
Youth Parliament next year.
Mia said she has always been
interested in politics and she
followed last year’s election
closely.
“With social media and the
internet in particular, youth
are a lot more aware of the
going-ons around them, and I
think it’s really important that
we have a voice in our future,”
she said.
“The plan in the next couple
of weeks is for me to reach out
to a couple of youth groups
and get their point of view on
what they want to see happen in
Government.”
Mia has a passion for science
and technology.
“I’m in love with technology
and coding and science. I’ve
done a lot of robotics in the past,
and over the last six months my
REPRESENTING: National list MP Nicky Wagner has selected
St Margaret’s College student Mia Wright to be her youth MP
next year.
project has been to create a water
quality testing device. I actually
have won a couple of awards for
the project, so that’s amazing.”
Davidson v Livingstone
• By Julia Evans
MIKE DAVIDSON has capped
off his year of sport with a
win against his city council
counterpart.
The Papanui Ward city councillor
went head-to-head with Burwood
Ward’s Glenn Livingstone
in the Car Park Cannon Ball
challenge. The pair competed in
the councillor category, racing up
eight floors of a car park building.
Cr Davidson won comfortably
2-0. “I won’t go into the detail of
how easy it was to beat him, but
thank him for also supporting the
cause,” he said.
It was a “fantastic event” for
riders and spectators, he said.
“But, more importantly, the
councillors
Mike
Davidson
and Glenn
Livingstone
went headto-head
in
the Car Park
Cannon Ball
challenge.
reason for the event was about
raising money and awareness for
men’s health.”
Cr Davidson will be competing
again next year and challenged all
councillors to do the same.
“Personally this caps off a
significant year for me on the
sporting scene, having completed
the Coast to Coast, Sea to Sky
Duathalon, Le Race, Grape Ride,
Christchurch Marathon, Fight for
Christchurch and Car Park Cannon
Ball,” he said.
Cr Davidson recently got in the
boxing ring with Crusaders
assistant coach Brad Mooar to
raise money for Cure Kids. He
also dropped about 20kg when
he was training for the Coast to
Coast in February.
WHAT’S INSIDE? Helping Papanui-Innes Community Board
chairwoman Ali Jones open the time capsule are Molly Vaile
(left), Annabel Allen, Rory Forsythe and Max McNulty.
Time capsule to spend 100
more years underground
THE CONTENTS of a 1920s
time capsule recently opened
in St Albans are set to be
reburied.
The capsule was opened in
September after being hidden
for nearly 100 years. It was buried
in 1920 when the St Albans
Public Library was constructed
and was only discovered in 2011
when the building was demolished.
Copies of The Lyttelton Times
and The Press from the 1920s
were among the artefacts found
in the capsule, along with a
letter.
However, at Friday’s meeting,
the Papanui-Innes Community
Board decided to rebury the
capsule alongside a new one.
It will be buried in 2020 with
the completion of the new St Albans
Community Centre and is
set to be reopened on the 100th
anniversary of the community
centre in 2120.
City council staff will incorporate
the two capsules into the
centre’s foundation design.
Community groups will be
invited to make a contribution
to the contents at the St Albans
Park reopening event.
A replica of the contents of
the old capsule may also be
displayed in the entrance to the
community centre.
•From page 1
But city councillors Mike
Davidson and Pauline Cotter said
the report actually highlights
a more dangerous intersection
along the corridor – Greers and
Harewood Rds.
Said Cr Davidson “You can
read through reports and try and
pick out little bits that you have
issues with, but
when you read
the report in its
entirety, it’s very
clear that actually
the intersection
that is creating the
most risk down
Mike
Davidson
there is the Greers
Rd/Harewood Rd
intersection.”
The city council needed to be
“careful” about moving capital
forward to pay for upgrades at the
Breens, Gardiners and Harewood
Rds intersection, Cr Davidson
said.
He said that intersection would
likely not get a New Zealand
Transport Agency subsidy.
“We need to look at what
actually needs to be done first.
We need to be mindful where the
risk is down that corridor.”
However, Cr Keown said you
cannot compare the two as
the Greers and Harewood Rds
intersection already has traffic
lights. “The problems are not
because it has traffic lights, it’s
a number of other reasons. This
is about getting people
across that intersection.”
Mayor Lianne Dalziel
said it is important to
look at the entire corridor
as Harewood Rd has
changed.
“It is no longer the
major thoroughfare that
it used to be. As a result,
the four lanes encourage
people to speed because there
isn’t a lot of traffic to slow it down
Clash over intersection upgrades
Fire rages, homes at risk
DEBATE: City councillors have clashed over whether the
controversial Breens, Harewood and Gardiners Rds intersection
should be upgraded first.
and so it creates a dangerous
corridor.”
“There are significant issues in
this report that need to be
worked shopped.”
She called for a
workshop involving
the Papanui-Innes and
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood community
boards.
But she said there were
a number of upgrades
needed along the route,
including at the Greers Rd and
the Bishopdale roundabout.
River plan creates ‘vibrant future’
Avebury
House
Community
Trust
house coordinator
Tanya
Didham
writes
about how the Otakaro
Avon River Corridor
draft regeneration plan
will have an impact on
Richmond
AVEBURY House has
experienced several
transformations since its
origins in the 1850s. It was
a doctor’s cottage, a grand
family home, a youth hostel,
a quake victim and now,
heading into 2019, a fullyrefurbished
community asset.
Richmond has weathered
more than its fair share of
transformation, too, but
as we approach eight years
since a kink in the earth’s
surface changed everything,
we are beginning to see
the way forward – the next
transformation.
Bordering the red zone,
as we do, whatever happens
in that quake-affected river
corridor is going to have a
BEAUTIFUL: Avebury House has had its fair share of
changes since it opened in the 1850s.
big impact on us and our
communities. The waiting-toknow
is almost over.
Regenerate Christchurch
has released its draft plan and
it feels like it has listened to
what so many of us have been
saying: Restore the health of
the river.
Move forward by respecting
our past heritage – not just our
built heritage, but our cultural
and natural heritage too.
In 1851, Dr Samuel Grundy
bought the section Avebury
now stands on and built a
modest house, naming it after
his hometown in England.
At that time, the South
Island was still referred to
as New Munster, the entire
European population of New
Zealand was just under 27,000
(Maori numbered about
56,000) and the Otakaro-Avon
got its first footbridge, crossing
the river where Worcester St
does now.
Already by then a huge
amount of native bush had
been cleared, but Canterbury
long-tailed bats were still
thriving, native bush still lined
the waterways and tui were an
ever-present songbird.
Here at Avebury, we’re
excited to see the river
walkways and cycleways open
up and native planting start
to fill the gaps and cracks that
still remind us of what’s gone,
while bringing back a little of
what was lost long before. And
we also see projects that bring
people and activities back to
our community.
Let Regenerate Christchurch
know (before the consultation
closes on December 19) that
you like where it is going
with this, because here in
Richmond, we’re ready for a
green and vibrant future.
NOR’WEST NEWS
As a person who sets high (at times
ridiculously high) standards, it’s often a
relief to get to the end of the year – and this
year especially. Along with everyone else,
whether working at a breakneck pace or
to a simpler rhythm, I find it a good time to
reflect on the events of the previous twelve
months. The businessperson in me looks to
analyse and assess. To attempt to repeat the
successes and minimize the falls in the year
that’s been and, of course, there have
been both.
Achieving the highest performing office
internationally for the Harcourts brand has
been the biggest accolade. It’s seen the
Papanui office placed as the number-one office
out of over 900 in 10 countries. Undoubtedly
a proud moment, but there have also been
the usual conflicts that come with running
a successful business whilst managing the
various agendas of over 120 people across
five offices.
It’s also been a year where law changes
around Overseas Investment and Anti-
Money Laundering have required a new level
of compliance and vigilance. 2019 will no
doubt see even more training and specialist
CHRISTMAS
greetings
& Property
assistance to ensure the highest levels of
professional care are maintained in these
very new areas.
Personally, the mother in me is adjusting to
the new dimension of having two sons mostly
living away from home and another Christmas
(the seventh) without our eldest son Harry, who
will be working in the Japanese Alps. Like every
parent, these moments make me thoughtful
and nostalgic, and probably contribute to the
rationale for always having an open house on
Christmas Day. We’re a ‘more the merrier’ kind
of family and our day is complete with our own
quirky traditions and enough food and drink to
feed a small army.
So, it’s been a great year, a changing market
and a changing environment. Adjusting to new
price points in different demographics whilst
instigating additional support services for the
company. The appointment of a full-time social
media designer has opened-up a whole new
methodology for connecting with potential
clients and purchasers, and the year ahead sees
us adding to this part of the business. Giving back
has also been a constant theme, and children
and the vulnerable are the first on our list. So,
what will 2019 look like? Like other years, it will
probably have its share of challenge and cheer.
I’m hoping it means lots of good madness, a
caring community, lots of opportunity and more
time with the people I love.
Happy Christmas!
‘Knocked for six’ with pneumonia
Fire rages, homes at risk
Pneumonia can strike at
any time. Well-known
local body politician Tim
Sintes is recovering from
the potentially deadly
infection. Julia Evans
reports
TIM SINTES has been in
bed living off a diet of english
breakfast tea and Kurols cough
drops for the past five weeks.
It’s a big change for the 67-yearold
former fisherman, who can
normally be found surfing,
gardening or tinkering in his
shed.
But Mr Sintes, who is deputy
chairman of the Coastal-
Burwood Community Board,
has been “knocked for six” by a
severe case of pneumonia.
It’s landed him in hospital
twice.
“The day before it happened,
I was riding my mountain bike
over Rapaki with my daughter.
The next day, I woke up and I
thought I just had hay fever, I
had a blocked nose and that was
about it,” Mr Sintes said.
He started to shake and shiver
– the next morning he went to
the doctor.
“One listen to the croak in
my chest and he said ‘you’ve
got quite severe pneumonia’. I
went straight to get an X-ray
and then I was admitted to
hospital.”
It went downhill from there.
“I just kept getting worse.
At first we thought it was
legionnaires’, I’d just redone the
lawns.”
Every year Mr Sintes’ hosts
a community Christmas
celebration at his Southshore
home and was relaying the lawn
for the occasion.
ON THE
MEND:
Coastal-
Burwood
Community
Board deputy
chairman
Tim Sintes
has been in
bed for five
weeks with a
severe case of
pneumonia.
“But I’d been wearing a mask
when I was doing the lawn . . .
they worked out it was a bacterial
infection that caused the
pneumonia, but nobody knows
how I got it.”
Mr Sintes said he knew nothing
about pneumonia before, but now
he is an expert.
“I did not realise the
seriousness of it. When people
would say to me they’ve got
pneumonia, I would think it was
just a bit like having the flu,” he
said.
There were moments he
thought he would never breathe
again when his lungs felt like
they were compressing in on
themselves.
“I was on oxygen in a severe
state for three days. I couldn’t
breathe and the bed was
wringing wet from me sweating
so much. One night I had the
most intense hallucinations.
They were in 3D colour. It was
horrible,” he said.
“You feel very vulnerable.
Usually I’m too busy to be sick.”
He was discharged from
hospital and felt like he was on
the mend.
“I felt better and I thought,
wow, I can do all these things.
Since I didn’t feel too bad, I
thought good, it was all over,” he
said.
Soon he was back in the surf,
mowing the lawns and just about
at the end of his first course of
antibiotics.
Shakes and shivers a battle for Sintes
Fire rages, homes at risk
•From page 13
“There were about three or
four days where I couldn’t quite
believe it, I felt alive again.
One day I mowed the lawns, the
next day I was out for a coffee in
Sumner and I started feeling not
too good again,” Mr Sintes said.
His wife Jan suggested he go to
hospital.“The aches and shakes
were back and I thought, ‘no, I
don’t want to go to hospital’. But
I had to tell my wife to ring the
ambulance.”
He ended
up spending
another
six days in
hospital.
Mr Sintes
was discharged
from hospital
for the second
Tim Sintes
time 10 days
ago.
The pneumonia had spread to
his other lung. “That taught me
a lesson. Listen to your doctor
when they say you need to rest. I
didn’t think it was much, I didn’t
think of the consequences and
now I’ve been sick for five weeks.”
After losing 8kg, Mr Sintes
believes he may be on the road to
recovery and has been getting his
appetite back.
“I’m so cautious now. I don’t
STRUCK DOWN: Over the past year in Canterbury, 1736 people were admitted to hospital with
pneumonia and it was the cause of 124 deaths.
want to go backwards again.”
Although most people are
lamenting the cold start to
summer, Mr Sintes said it has
been great.
“It would be torture if I had
to lie here and it was sunny. I
enjoy life so much. Believe me,
this weather has been bad for
everyone except me.”
Six weeks ago, Mr Sintes
had an accident with a
chainsaw and cut his leg. Two
weeks later he was back out
surfing. “It’s hard to believe you
can be right two weeks after
being cut by a chainsaw, but
you can be knocked for six by
something like this.”
But the cause of his pneumonia
remains a mystery.
“It’s the strangest feeling.
I’m the kind of person that
needs explanations and needs a
reason, but this time it could be
anything,” he said.
Mr Sintes said people had
asked if it was related to stress
from his city council work and
the code of conduct investigation
“I can easily say it’s not. I’m not
THE BREENS Intermediate first
XI cricket team finished third
at the National Primary School
Cup in Lincoln.
The team put together three
gutsy performances in what
coach Jono Collins said were
“appalling conditions” to finish
in the top three against six of the
best intermediate-aged teams in
New Zealand.
Collins said the result was
even more impressive given the
other schools in the tournament
were either private or had much
bigger rolls.
Although Breens only won
one out of their five games and
one match was abandoned,
they were able to grab third in
Key
• Ryman village
• Proposed village
the knockout-style tournament
because their net run-rate was
higher than the three teams
below them.
Collins said the result was by
far the best Breens have achieved
at a national level.
“We haven’t even come
remotely close to a result like
this before. It was an amazing
achievement for a school like
ours.”
The highlight of the
tournament came when
Breens defeated Raroa Normal
Intermediate, of Wellington, by
six wickets in their first game.
The team were anchored by
a quick-fire 52 from opening
batsman Connor Stewart.
Collins said “everyone did
Neville Peck watched his
said the way he and his
Breens continued their good
WINNERS: The Burnside High
School girls volleyball team
celebrate after winning the
South Island junior champs.
BURNSIDE HIGH School have
brought a title home from the
South Island junior volleyball
champs at Dunedin’s Edgar
Centre.
Burnside’s girls A team won
the year 9-10 division one title,
finishing ahead of 16 teams from
across the South Island.
Coach Sam Ryburn said they
only lost one game in pool play to
city rivals St Margaret’s College.
Ryburn said although it had
been a “pretty tight competition,”
the team eventually made up for
the loss, defeating St Margaret’s
two games to one in the final.
“We have a pretty well-rounded
team of players and really played
well as a team.”
The win capped off a successful
tournament for Christchurch
school girls, with St Margaret’s
finishing second and St Andrew’s
A taking third.
Riccarton High School’s
boys team also won their
competition, finishing above 20
other teams.
Christchurch players also
cleaned up the tournament’s
individual awards, earning eight
of the 12 slots in the girls alltournament
team and six spots in
the boys all-tournament team.
The most valuable players in
the girls and boys competitions
were Burnside’s Taylah Holdem
and Riccarton’s Joe Baxter.
Ryburn said the strong
performance from Canterbury
schools was “really positive” and
could create “definite pathways”
for young volleyballers to gain
athletic scholarships overseas in
the future.
Both Burnside and Riccarton
hope to continue their good
form. Burnside’s girls team are
competing at the Australian
was set to start on Sunday and
finish on Friday.
Pump track
likely for
next year
A NEW pump track for Shirley
could be installed by mid-way
through next year.
At a meeting on Friday, the
Papanui-Innes Community
Board said it was working with
the council’s parks team to
discuss options to get the project
over the line by the end of the
current financial year.
It was previously said that a
decision on funding would not be
made before the start of the council’s
2021-2031 Long Term Plan.
Papanui Ward board member
Emma Norrish said they were
also seeking support from
community groups, given the
benefits the park would have for
Shirley residents.
“With nothing planned in the
next 10 years, it is the perfect opportunity
to make it an appealing,
usable community space.”
By way of a petition, primary
school pupils in Shirley asked
the city council to install a pump
track at the Shirley Community
Reserve where they could ride
their skateboards, scooters and
bikes.
The petition was started by
pupil Shannon Smith and was
presented to the Papanui-Innes
Community Board in August.
Reunion for freezing workers
FORMER EMPLOYEES of the
Canterbury Freezing Works,
which opened on Belfast Rd in
the late 1800s and shut down in
2008, have reunited to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of its
closure.
Around 200 ex-staff members
met at The Bower hotel on November
17 to exchange stories of
their time at the freezing works
and reconnect with old friends.
Those who attended ranged
in age, with some guests having
started at the freezing works in
the early 1950s.
Loyal employee Hooch Fonotia
(real name John) who organised
the event, was a workhorse at the
freezing works for 45 years, starting
at the age of 18 and finishing
the day the plant closed its doors
for the last time.
Mr Fonotia said his time at the
plant had played a huge part in
shaping who he is today and said
the reunion brought back many
fond memories.
“The job always meant more to
me than money.”
“I made a hell of a lot of
friends.”
Mr Fonotia said: “It was a really
good feeling to see all sorts of
people, as many had gone their
separate ways and not seen each
other since the closure.”
Guests celebrated with a slice
of cake and were surprised by an
appearance and speech by secretary
of the New Zealand Meat
Workers Union’s Canterbury
branch Bill Watt.
Mr Watt said the get-together
was a great way to celebrate the
history and people associated
with a workplace that shaped
Canterbury’s economic and social
landscape for over 100 years.
“It was a really good function.”
Mr Watt said the event could
have potentially been “the last
hurrah” for some of freezing
works longest-serving employees,
making the event even more
special.
REUNITED: (From left to right) – John (Hooch) Fonotia, Ross Blakley, Janine, and Graham Finiki
were just some of over 200 former employees of the Canterbury Freezing Works who reunited
for the 10th anniversary of its closure.
Fire rages, homes at risk
“There were some there that
may not to be able to do it again.”
Mr Watt said, in its day, the
Canterbury Freezing Works was
one of the biggest producers and
exporters of lamb products in
New Zealand.
Its closure in 2008 led to the
loss of 250 jobs.

Stolen rabbits make happy return
NOR’WEST NEWS
Fire rages, homes at risk
BUNNY BANDITS have returned
two pet rabbits to a pre-school
after outrage on social media.
The two bunny sisters, Ruby and
Rose, were stolen from BestStart
Hei Hei on November 30.
Two hutches, rabbit food and
a wooden baby fence were also
taken. It was the second burglary
in two nights at the pre-school.
During the first one, a Civil
Defence kit and two shade sails
were stolen.
The rabbits and a hutch were
returned on December 3 after
CCTV footage of the offenders
was published on Facebook and on
Stuff.
BestStart Hei Hei pre-school
manager Melitta Fielding narrowly
missed the burglars returning the
rabbits.
“A friend has a surveillance
camera and saw the car driving
down the road with a rabbit cage
on the back . . . by the time I got
there they had dumped them
down the side of the building and
the rabbits were in the hutch.”
She said the children loved
having them back.
“They were so excited when they
saw the cage.”
Miss Fielding believed media
coverage of the thefts may have
pressured the thieves to return the
rabbits.
Nothing else stolen in the
burglaries has been returned.
HAPPY DAYS: Cameron Denson, 2, Jaxon Bain, 3, teacher Abbie Young, Elliot Jolly, 4, Alexander Bromell, 2, and Lachan Preddy,
WITH MARY IN FAITH
TĀTOU KO MERE E WHAKAPONO ANA
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
This year has been particularly special in that so many of our past students and staff
have responded to our call to join a new group. Named Rauru, the group has been
formed to strengthen and support our Marian College community. Past students and
staff of Marian College, St Mary’s College (Christchurch) and McKillop College, are
warmly invited to register for Rauru and help us shape the future of Marian.
Collective dialogue and strategic visioning are underway as we prepare for a new
school. Work includes development of a brief to ensure our Special Catholic Character,
values and culture are captured and reflected in our new school.
We appreciate Marian College is part of the bigger picture and we support the Bishop
in taking due care of process and in making informed decisions for the benefit of the
Catholic Diocese of Christchurch as a whole. The old saying is true – good things
take time.
Thank you to our Board of Trustees, our school staff and community, and members of
the Marian Foundation for your support and fantastic work throughout 2018.
To our Marian girls – relax and enjoy a well-earned holiday. We look forward to
having you back refreshed, inspired and ready for 2019 at Marian College.
And finally, congratulations to our 2018 Marian leavers:
we wish you all the very best and please stay in touch.
Wishing you good health and blessings this Christmas.
Jan Paterson
THE GIFT OF GIVING
Our Young Vinnies Group helps support the important work of the
Society of St Vincent de Paul. Recently the group spent a lunchtime
wrapping Christmas presents for the Vinnie’s Christmas Party for
people in need.
Marian College has a long tradition of service. Both students and staff
members are actively involved and contribute positively to the wider
community. All students complete at least six hours of meaningful
service within the school and community every year.
PRIZE WINNERS
WHIRLWIND
WOW TRIP
Congratulations to Catherine Ryan (right)
and Louise Daly (left) who have been
awarded 2018 Marian College dux and
proxime accessit respectively.
Marian College Principal Mary-Lou
Davidson says major prize winners
demonstrate exceptional performance
and dedication across all aspects of life
at Marian College – in academia, special
character, leadership, music, sport,
environment, culture and service.
The Marian College PTA Grace Awards
are very special awards for senior students
who quietly go about their learning, being
kind and caring, participating in school
life and sometimes managing through
challenges. These students often go ‘under
the radar’ and as the award criteria says
– they just get on with school and are not
always officially recognised. This year
Grace Awards were presented to Mia
Blyth, Renee Rae, Zoe Frame, Molly Ford
and Hannah Manalaysay.
A full list of prize recipients and
photographs are on the College website.
IT’S
BUSINESS TIME!
Recently, Year 10 Marian College
students had the opportunity to pitch
their business ideas to a panel of judges
as part of the three-day Young Enterprise
BP Business Challenge programme.
The hands-on learning event creates
opportunities for students to develop
their skills, engage with local business
people and learn how a good business
works. The programme covers learning
in English, Mathematics and Statistics,
Social Sciences, Digital Technology and
Commerce subjects.
Described by some as the highlight
of the year, senior students studying
textiles at Marian College have the
opportunity to travel to Wellington for a
two-day whirlwind WOWtrip. The group
experienced the World of WearableArt
Awards Show, explored two tertiary
institutes offering textile and design
programmes and visited the Beehive.
“The show was incredible with amazing
outfits and dancers. This was a wonderful
way to end the term,” says Year 12 Marian
College student Phoebe O’Regan.
The group also attended the Suffrage 125
exhibition Whakatū Wāhine at Museum of
New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
In the past year, the district
Pupils learn about role of war horses
GR ENDALE SCHOOL pupils
have taken a step back in time,
s eing first hand what men and
horses l oked like during war.
The New Zealand Mounted
Rifles Charitable Trust president
Mark A pleton and member
Mike Donaldson t ok their
horses to the sch ol on Monday,
in a bid to educate pupils on the
sacrifice their ancestors made in
World War 1 and World War 2.
Mr A pleton and Mr Donaldson
a rived a the sch ol dre sed
in World War 1 uniforms while
their horses Tommy and Kruze
wore 1 0-year-old sa dles donated
to the trust.
The presentation is a prelude
to the Gr endale Recreation Reserve
Management Commi t e’s
upcoming Anzac Day service.
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust will
ride horseback to the service.
Mr A pleton said it was
important children were
educated on what soldiers
wen through during World
War 1 and World War 2.
But he said the presentation
didn’t go into t o much detail
and was more of a “show and
te l” to make them aware of what
the soldiers l oked like.
Children were shown the type
of kits horses were required to
wear in the war.
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
since the age of 19.
THE HALSWE L-Hornby-
Ri carton Community Board
has b en given the gr en ligh to
o pose the pla ned qua ry near
Templeton.
Mayor Lia ne Dalziel told the
board on Thursday it had the okay
from the city council to make a
submi sion if Fulton Hogan a plies
for a resource consen to create a
qua ry.
Board chairman Mike Mora
told Western News the submi sion
would likely o pose Fulton Hogan’s
plan.
“You can just about guarant e
it . because we [the community
board] don’t believe qua ries
should be so close to residential
areas,” he said.
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
board’ submi sion.
“I’d like to think so because the
city council has had their eyes
open as we l ove recent years over
the crysta line silica risk,” he said.
Mr Mora said the community
board wi l be “representing and
