WIN! with TWT!

Catch A Falling Star Books

TWO TWT readers can win copies of a new book Catch A Falling Star:

A Story About Growing Up With Jeanne Little written by her daughter

- Boronia Park author Katie M Little.

When Jeanne Little burst

into the living rooms of millions

of households across

Australia in 1974 with her

first appearance on The

Mike Walsh Show – audiences

didn’t know what hit

them.

With incredible outfits,

false eyelashes and a raucous

voice that screamed

‘Hello Daaaaaaahling!’,

Jeanne was an instant sensation

and won the Gold

Logie for Most Popular TV

Personality two years later.

Pregnant with her only

child Katie M Little at the

time of her first TV appearance,

Catch A Falling Star

takes you into the world of

the little girl that grew up

backstage amidst sequins

and feathers; of a unique

upbringing by an unconventional

mother and a

look at fame through innocent

eyes.

Go back to 1980s Australia,

to the days of Betamax,

Bob Hawke and shoulder

pads, before smart phones

and breathalysers, when

Big Macs came in styrofoam

boxes and the only

environmental crisis was a

hole in the ozone layer.

Flash forward to 2010

and Jeanne’s name hits the

headlines again – this time

with the shocking revelation

that she has been diagnosed

with Alzheimer’s

- a disease affecting an

estimated almost 50 million

people worldwide.

With her mother in fast

decline and her family in

crisis, it is up to Katie to

take the reins.

Catch A Falling Star will

take you on a journey that

is both laugh-out-loud funny,

heartbreakingly honest,

and a rare glimpse into the

personal life of one of Australia’s

most beloved celebrity

families.

TO WIN go to our website

- weeklytimes.com.au

- and click on the WIN with

TWT tab and fill out the

entry form; or write your

name, address and phone

number on the back of an

envelope and send to TWT

4 THE WEEKLY TIMES Wednesday 12 December, 2018

Public acclaim for

‘Dominello Effect’

Dear Sir,

Ryde MP Victor Dominello

has received acclaim across

the State for the recently

coined “Dominello Effect”.

In Mr Dominello’s ten years

in public life he has actively

campaigned against overdevelopment.

The one instance where Mr

Dominello did support a developer

were social housing

units, supported by Mission

Australia and the Salvation

Army.

Now other MP’s and even

the Premier herself are starting

to take notice and listening

to the concerns on overdevelopment

because of the

Ryde MP’s advocacy.

Victor Dominello has opposed

overdevelopment to

the point where he has been

attacked by Urban Taskforce

CEO Chris Johnson and Meriton

CEO Harry Triguboff.

He’s even advocated for

his community to the point

where now every NSW MP

has pushed for a minimum

one year development freeze

in their electorates.

In a country where few upstanding,

moral and ethical

politicians exist anymore, it is

great to see that people like

Mr Dominello still operate in

our Parliament.

Someone willing to stand

against even his own Government

and break Party lines to

do what is right.

Rangers blitz

BERYL JOHNSON

Ermington

Dear sir,

I would like to let you know

how Hunter Hill Rangers fine

parents dropping off kids

at Marist Sisters College at

Woolwich.

They are issuing $337 fines!

Considering there are NO

parent drop off/pick up zones

there and council have made

all the other areas No stopping

zone, it makes it very difficult

for parents to drop off kids at

school.

There are few parking spots

which are always full and the

rest is either Bus zone or No

stopping zone.

So unless we fly a helicopter

and drop them off like that, or

drop them off 500 metres before

or after school, I don’t see

any other way.

Why are there no drop off

zones for parents?

What are we supposed to

do?

How come there are drop

off zones at Hunters Hill public

school?

I know this is a high school

and most kids go on the bus,

but sometimes we need to drop

them off for various reasons,

only to be greeted by lovely

Hunters Hill Rangers!

on the streets

Dear Sir,

The countdown has begun

‘till Christmas Day and while

I do love this time of year, I

often find myself saddened

when I am reminded of all the

young kids who will be alone

without anyone to care for

them this Christmas.

Every year there are many

kids who spend their Christmas

Day on the streets – they don’t

have a home to go to let alone

presents or a hot meal.

Our homeless youth are reminded

at Christmas of what

they don’t have but it doesn’t

have to be that way.

If you ask some of the kids

Youth Off The Streets work with

what they want for Christmas, it

won’t be a new bike or the latest

game.

They will ask for somewhere

safe to sleep. Someone to talk

to. A hot meal. A shower. The

little things that make you feel

loved and wanted.

This year I’ll be handing out

hundreds of hampers and presents

across Australia to families

who need it.

Our Koch Centre for Youth

and Learning is also holding a

community dinner on Christmas

Eve to show our support

to the people we work with.

Just the simple act of giving a

Christmas meal can drastically

change the holidays for families

in need.

Having a meal and someone

to talk to gives them the opportunity

to connect with others

which is what this time of year

is all about.

Dear Sir,

Wow! What a hotbed of

political bastardry is Ryde

Council.

First you have Clr Lane accused

of belittling the Mayor

by naming the massive 250m

tower in Macquarie Park “Laxale

Towers” (Toughen up Mr

Mayor).

Then we get the Labor Mayor

accused of using Council resources

for his campaign to

get elected to the seat of Ryde

by booting out Mr Dominello

(Sorry Mr Mayor - you stand for

nothing except yourself).

Then you get Clr Maggio,

(winner of the most code of

conduct breaches award) coming

out in the newspaper saying

they’re all terrible.

Clr Maggio - we all remember

your message to the female

General Manager telling

her she should have stayed

a housewife and you being

banned from speaking to staff

while you were mayor because

you were too abusive.

Are these the sorts of people

we want running for elected office?

Both Messers Laxale and

Maggio say they are running for

state Parliament on top of their

Council job.

I have a simple message for

all of you.

Get on with the job you were

elected to do.

You seem to be having

enough trouble doing that without

adding another one.

Overdevelopment must

be stopped in Ryde

Dear Sir,

Rampant overdevelopment

must be stopped in Ryde.

Another proposed development

has been submitted to

Ryde Council, this time replacing

three residential houses

with 22 (yes 22!) dwellings on

three residential blocks.

This is in a small residential

area 19-23 Samual Street

Ryde.

It is totally not in keeping with

the surrounding streets, nor is

the traffic and parking able to

be supported by the very narrow

streets which are already

congested.

Please let the council know

that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,

and register your objection to

LDA2018/0432 by December

21, 2018.

Keep snouts out

of Ryde trough

Dear Sir,

What is it with these politicians

using our rates to serve

their own political interests?

Ryde Mayor Jerome Laxale

had been found guilty of

breaching the code of conduct

for using council resources to

recruit unknowing residents to

his Labor state campaign.

Being Mayor of Ryde is a

privilege.

Using Mayoral letterhead to

try and get people to support

your state parliament ambitions

tells us loud and clear - you

don’t respect the privilege you

have been given.

Mayor Laxale, if you’re so

keen to join your Labor mates

in Macquarie Street, make sure

you keep your snout out of the

Ryde trough while doing so.

History lesson for

a history teacher?

Dear Sir,

In reference to Mr Selinger’s

comment (TWT 5-12-18), I am

surprised and disappointed

that he states that two policemen

were shot dead at

Stringybark Creek in 1878.

He should have said it was

three policemen shot dead by

Ned Kelly.

And I believe Mr Selinger is a

teacher.

His manner is very patronising

of Mr Ikonomou.

The trouble with erroneous

history is that people may go

around repeating the error.

And the most important thing

about History is that if one

doesn’t learn from it, then it

will repeat itself, with the same

results.

Another proposed development

has been submitted to

Ryde Council.

22 Units are proposed to be

a dead end and a local narrow

It is being submitted under

NBN communication

non existent

Dear Sir,

On Monday morning December

3 at 8 am three NBN

workmen were in my garden

digging a 30 metre trench

along my fence line to lay the

conduit for the NBN for the

neighbour behind my house.

I had not been contacted by

the NBN that this digging was

going to happen.

On the Sunday December 2

my neighbour, whose English

is limited told me that the NBN

had suggested to him that digging

the trench through my garden

was the best option for his

NBN connection.

It seemed that my neighbour

had been made responsible for

communicating to me that the

NBN was going to dig a trench

in my garden.

I think that this is totally inappropriate.

The NBN should

have contacted me about these

plans, explained the work to be

done and when it was to happen.

To rely on a neighbour to

be the spokesperson for the

NBN is illegal and totally inappropriate.

When I opened my curtains,

after I had had a shower and

got dressed the men were

working in my garden.

I have contacted the NBN

and asked them to improve

on their communication with

owners of properties when

they need to access their property

and explain what work and

when work needs to be done.

Katie’s fascinating stories of

growing up with Jeanne Little

GROWING UP in the

1980s my mother was

a household name –

Jeanne Little.

Most people loved her,

some loathed her – “That

voice!” – and a few odd ones

even stalked her!

Mum was a weekly regular

on The Mike Walsh Show for

over a decade and won the

Gold Logie for Most Popular

TV Personality in 1974.

Jeanne “fell into television”

as she used to say when she

was pregnant with me, and

I went everywhere with her.

I took my job as her

assistant very seriously when

I was a little girl! Backstage

I was always on hand to

yank up a zipper or peel off

Mum’s old eyelash glue as

she transformed herself from

humble ‘Plain Jane’ into the

persona millions came to

adore.

We lived in Paddington in

a very tall terrace house, my

bedroom was right up the

top next to Mum’s sewing

room.

Downstairs in the

basement Dad ran his

prestigious interior design

business, most of the house

looked like a set out of

Dynasty but up the top there

were no rules and creative

expression trumped all.

We lived in a fabulous

MUM LOVED nothing

better than staying up all

always looking for ideas.

To The POINT

She made hats from icecream

Mum was so resourceful

up the youngest of seven

children, brought up by a

single mother who had told

instilled into her the belief

that ‘anything you set your

mind to, you can achieve’.

One time Mum made an

outfit out of garbage bags,

she said it was great to

wear to a party because if

you spilt your drink on it you

could just wipe it off.

The idea blossomed into

a national competition to

make wedding dresses

out of garbage bags –

thousands upon thousands

of entries piled in!

OF COURSE as a child, I

took my mother completely

for granted and it wasn’t

until I had children of my

the sink one day washing

just how incredible her ideas

had been.

Wednesday 12 December, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 5

Ryde urges government to reject Meriton tower proposal

CITY OF RYDE councillors have voted to oppose endorsing a proposed 42 storey

Meriton residential tower block at 112 Talavera Road in Macquarie Park.

The vote at last Tuesday

night’s extraordinary

council meeting was nine

to one in favour of notifying

the Department of

Planning of councillors’

opposition to the proposed

development and

was against a staff recommendation

to approve it.

It now has the potential

to force an explosive

political showdown between

the Department of

Planning against Ryde

MP Victor Dominello (Lib)

and Mayor Jerome Laxale

(ALP) who have both

concentrated their bids to

win the seat of Ryde at the

March election on over

development and public

infrastructure issues.

Councillor Roy Maggio

(Ind) abstained from the

vote on the grounds that

Meriton’s proposal could

not get a fair hearing in the

emotionally charged and

political council debate.

The maverick councillor

said the “disgraceful”

council vote put the

political opportunism of

Mayor Jerome Laxale and

Ryde MP Victor Dominello

(Lib) before the needs

of 18,000 young soccer

players, who will miss out

on millions of dollars to

fund playing fields offered

by Meriton as a public

contribution.

They think so poorly

of the community they’ve

made this a political football

despite the fact that

this proposed development

has a tick of approval

from our own staff and

will,in all probability, be

approved by the department,”

he said.

“Soccer will now miss

out on more than 35 million

dollars because the

whole process has been

compromised by their political

games, where there

is no opportunity for procedural

fairness.”

His motion to refer the

issue to the Greater Sydney

Commission did not

get support but a motion

by the Mayor to not only

oppose the development

but to condemn the Liberals

for “the deliberate and

misleading commentary

surrounding the application”

did.

“I’m prepared to call out

the commentary as absolute

lies,” Mayor Laxale

said.

“Mr Dominello has led

a scare campaign, falsely

accusing us of supporting

the development application

and shame on him for

doing so because this is

why people have lost faith

in politics.”

He stressed that the

only two (of four) Liberal

councillors who attended

the extraordinary meeting

– Clr Trenton Brown and

Clr Jordan Lane – voted in

favour of his motion.

They did not put up an

alternative motion and it

is now on public record

they voted to support my

motion to condemn Victor

Dominello’s deliberate,

misleading campaign,” he

told The Weekly Times.

Councillor Brown nonetheless

moved an unsuccessful

motion to have all

items in the Mayor’s motion

debated individually.

“Damn you!” he told the

Mayor.

“Your motion is a political

stunt and the Labor

Party and political stunts

go hand in glove.

“It shows that Mayor

Laxale is more interested

in Macquarie Street than

he is in our streets.”

The Mayor told The

Weekly Times that soccer

would not miss out

of funding because of the

vote as it will be funded

by other Section 96 developer

contributions.

Meriton spokesman

Matthew Lennartz told

the meeting his firm’s

proposal is “being undermined

by political agendas”

and that only 0.3 per

cent of the community

had lodged an objection

against it.

Mayor Laxale said this

nonetheless represented

hundreds of opponents

and Clr Brown said locals

had been queuing up to

sign a petition against the

proposal.

The Greens Clr Christopher

Gordon expressed

sympathy for Meriton.

“Councillor Maggio has

some very valid points

and all this stuff Victor

Dominello has been

whipping up is just outrageous,”

he said.

“I don’t know how Meriton

feel about this because

they have been

pushed around too and

this is a terrible state of

affairs.”

Urban Planner Chris

Johnson urged both sides

of politics of politics not to

buy into “irrational” decision

making and Patricia

Forsyth from the Sydney

Business Chamber urged

councillors to support the

development because it

would be located next

to major public transport

stations and would do

away with cars.

Public speaker Colin

Waring described Ms Forsyth

as “deluded” to think

that Macquarie Park residents

would give up cars

and TWT Miss Eastwood

Granny Smith Festival

Queen Divya Ahlawat had

a shot at Labor and The

Greens.

“This (issue) begs the

question are the people

in front of us running the

council for us or for property

developers and while

it is a relief you buckled

under pressure this time,

how will this change

things in the future ?” she

asked.

The emotive council

meeting recalls the abusive

meetings run by former

Mayor Colonel Bill

Pickering, which were

characterised by personal

attacks on councillors.

At one point during the

meeting a furious Clr Penny

Pedersen (ALP) was

accused by the Liberals of

“trying to subvert fair process

when she feels like

it” and she responded by

accusing the Liberals of

repeatedly “telling lies” to

support Mr Dominello.

One neutral observer in

the public gallery – who

identified himself as an

independent voter – said

he attended the meeting

to hear why staff recommended

approval and to

hear Meriton’s view.

He said he felt disillusioned

by both major

political parties and would

vote for Clr Maggio if he

stands as a candidate for

Ryde.

They didn’t have a

proper debate, they held

this late night session to

attack each other and

ratepayer’s will now have

to pay a whopping great

overtime payout to all the

staff who attended the

meeting and contributed

very little to it or nothing at

all,” he said.

The Honourable

Anthony Roberts MP

Member for Lane Cove

Dear Friends

Let me first emphasise what an honour and

privilege it is to have represented the Lane Cove

electorate in the NSW Parliament over the past

15 years.

My wife Alicia my three boys John, Sam and

Tom and I are very proud members of this

wonderful community – one of the finest areas of the greatest cities on earth.

And I am extremely proud of what the community and I have been able to achieve for the Lane

Cove electorate.

About $60 million worth of funding has gone to upgrading of local infrastructure – schools, roads,

public transport, parks and open spaces, to mention a few.

And this year alone, the Lane Cove electorate has greatly benefited from funding for numerous

local projects. These are just some:

• $1 million for a massive upgrade of Boronia Park

• $1 million to make Mindarie Park an inclusive play space

• $50,000 for an off-leash dog facility at Blackman Park

• $107,000 for repairs to Greendale Scout Hall

• $180,000 for Longueville Sporting Club

• $450,000 for Tantallon Oval

• $100,000 for Kingsford Smith Oval

• $105,000 for improved boating access

• More than $70,000 for Putney Tennyson Bowling and Community Club

• $150,000 for planting azaleas on Epping Rd

• Almost 31,000 for the upgrade of Carisbrook House

I am excited to say that there will soon be many hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of other

announcements – upgrades to community facilities and grants to community groups - to come for

the benefit of our community.

To the final year high school students, I wish you good grades in the HSC and success in whatever

you pursue in life.

And let me just remind you all that even if you haven’t made it to university, the world can still be

your oyster.

The trades are calling. Thanks to the booming economy this Government has helped provide, jobs

in the trades are in high demand and are highly paid.

To everyone, I urge you to please take care over the summer holidays – drive and play safely.

And, as we approach the end of another momentous year, I would like to wish everyone of you

the very best of everything.

I wish you all a holy Christmas and happy and relaxing holiday period.

And I wish you all a healthy and prosperous New Year.

And I look forward to continuing to represent you all to the best of my ability in the future.

Best wishes always,

Inaugural Shepherds Bay Community Art Show a success

TWELVE budding local artists aged between 6 and 12 years had their best works proudly displayed recently at the Shepherds Bay Village Plaza at Meadowbank. The

Shepherds Bay Community Art Show was lovingly and professionally put together by three passionate and community minded artists in Toni Courtelis, Sandra Tsiprou

and Chris Vidal. These three incredible artists put in their time and own funds to make the debut art show a success. The styles of the artworks on display varied from

realism, still life to abstract. The children’s delightful artworks certainly added artistic flair to the jolly festive season in the area. The Art Show was opened by Ryde

Councillor Trenton Brown. Pictured are the prize winning young artists with organising Art Show teacher Toni Courtellis.

Council votes for Hunters

Hill Day but chickens out

on Independence event!

BY OUR CIVIC ROUNDSMAN

HUNTERS HILL Council will celebrate Hunters Hill Day each year

on July 31 but councillors backed down from a Mayoral Minute to

have the day called Independence Day

A Mayoral Minute had

previously called on the

council to consider an

annual celebration of “the

independence of Hunters

Hill” but it took an emotive

debate on Monday

to endorse a watered

down motion for the day

to be a celebration of

what makes Hunters Hill

unique and to recognise

past triumphs that include

the Battle To Save

Kelly’s Bush and the Save

Hunters Hill High School

campaign.

Mayor Mark Bennett

has consistently stressed

the day should be a celebration

of independence

(from a takeover by larger

councils) particularly the

City of Ryde.

“If we lost this fight

against a forced merger

the councillors who

would make decisions

about Hunters Hill would

not live in Hunters Hill,”

he said.

Councillor Elizabeth

Krassoi (Ind) and Deputy

Mayor Ben Collins (Lib)

opposed any celebration

on July 31 which they

said would be politically

divisive.

“I feel this date is divisive

and from what I hear

it is all about us and them

and I don’t think we need

any more us and them,”

she said.

“I do not think celebrating

this day will bring our

community together in

any way whatsoever.”

Community speeches

in favour of the day were

made by former Clr Peter

Astridge, Greg Griffiths

and Phillip Hart with the

lone community speaker

against being Russell

Young.

Save Hunters Hill Municipality

spokesman and

former Councillor Phil

Jenkyn OAM spoke about

the significance of the

July 31 date.

“Premier Gladys Berejiklian

had only given an

intention not to merge

councils (fighting in

court) and we’ve all heard

governments making

good intentions,” he said.

“But what happened on

July 31 was incredible,

the court gave a judgement

and the judgement

was a total victory for

Hunters Hill and a total

loss for the government.”

Deputy Mayor Collins

accused Mr Jenkyn of

approaching councillors

and the community to

“coach” them to support

his view.

“If you want to have

Independence Day, as ri-

diculous as that is, you do

not have a right to do that

and alienate a third of the

community,” the Deputy

Mayor said.

“This is divisive, always

will be divisive and

not only will it divide this

council chamber it will divide

the community.”

Councillor Ross Williams

disagreed.

“I do not see (the victory)

as divisive but as a

defining event because

no other battle in Hunters

Hill was about the demise

of this community.”

Local resident Phillip

Hart agreed the July 31

date is politically divisive

and he is glad it is!

The objectors feel the

day is a poke in the eye

for those who supported

forced amalgamations

and honestly, I don’t mind

if it is a poke in the eye for

Wishing you and

your family a very

our local (Liberal) politicians,”

he said.

Councillor Krassoi

believes that the Moocooboola

Festival is the

proper event to celebrate

Hunters Hill but former

Clr Astridge argues that

Moocooboola has never

been political, while Clr

Justine McLaughlin said

that Moocooboola is bigger

than Hunters Hill.

“Moocooboola is a victim

of its own success

and this year we had

more than 20,000 people

attend it, which is actually

bigger than the population

of Hunters Hill.”

The Weekly Times

which led the community

fight against a forced

merger - will celebrate Independence

Day on July

31, each year! – Editor.

MAYOR’S COMMUNITY MESSAGE

Clinical follow up in skin cancer treatment

Peter is in his 60’s. Fair

skinned blue eyes and had

numerous skin spots treated

with liquid nitrogen spray

(cryotherapy) in the past.

He presented seeking a routine

skin check and did not

have any particular concern.

He did say that he lives alone

and he can’t see his back. On

examination of his back, there

were numerous spots that were

red and white. The white spots

were typical scars from previous

cryotherapies. The red

spots were skin cancers that

were not successfully treated

with cryotherapy. They were

re-growing and it was much

bigger than the original size.

The lesson to learn here is

that cryotherapy is a non-surgical

treatment and it is a popular

treatment of non-melanoma

skin cancers.

However, the complete

clearance rate is low and the

treated spots often regrow. And

therefore it is essential that the

treated area is “followed up”

to ensure that there is a complete

clearance of skin cancer.

In this instance, the biopsies

showed a superficial basal cell

carcinoma.

The cancer was treated non

surgically with laser skin

cancer therapy avoiding, often,

unnecessary surgery.

A clinical follow up after any

skin cancer treatment is essential,

especially following a nonsurgical

treatment, and early

recurrence cancers, if picked

up early, can be treated easily.

City of Ryde Library staff dressed in period costumes for the reopening of

Council calls on

State Government to refuse

planning proposal

Last week, the City of Ryde supported

my motion to recommend that the

State Government refuse a planning

proposal which seeks to amend the

building height and floor space ratio for

112 Talavera Road, Macquarie Park.

This recommendation has now been

submitted to the State Government,

which is the consent authority for the

planning proposal.

I now call on the State Government to

take all possible steps to rule on the

planning proposal by 31 December 2018.

The decision by the City of Ryde to

recommend refusal of the planning

proposal aligns with Council’s stance

against overdevelopment. This includes

calling for an abolishment of the State

Government’s Priority Precincts, which

will result in 15,000 extra dwellings in

Macquarie Park and North Ryde, as well

as opposition to the introduction of the

Medium Density Housing Code in the

City of Ryde, which once introduced

in 2020 could lead to an additional

60,000 residents in low density

neighbourhoods.

Eastwood library reopens

Last week I was at Eastwood Library

to celebrate its reopening following

upgrades to its layout and décor.

The highlight of the upgrade is a new

digital reading table, which will provide

the community with access to thousands

of magazines from across the world in a

variety of languages.

There is also a theme throughout the

library’s new layout which celebrates

Eastwood’s rich history, including a

historic photo exhibition of Eastwood in

the early 1900s.

The upgrades underline Council’s

commitment to making its libraries the

best they can possibly be for the whole

community.

Congratulations

Clr Christopher Gordon

Congratulations must go to my fellow

City of Ryde Councillor, Clr Christopher

Gordon, who was awarded Best Musical

Score for the film Ladies In Black at the

This tremendous achievement shows

what a diverse and talented array of

individuals we have on Council at the

Hunters Hill and Lane Cove

are being starved to death

by Berejiklian, Labor claims

HUNTERS HILL and Lane Cove Councils councils are being

denied hundreds of thousands of dollars owed to them

by the State Government in a move to abolish them, Labor

claimed this week.

Opposition Local Government

spokesman Peter Primrose MLC

told The Weekly Times the Berejiklian

Government is deliberately

withholding up to $800, 000 owed

to both councils in court awarded

(forced merger win) costs and is

cost shifting tens of thousands

more so they fail the economic criteria

for survival under the government’s

Fit For The Future policy.

He said Hunters Hill is particularly

under threat of being abolished and

forcibly merged into The City of

Ryde.

“If councils like Hunters Hill are

pushed into the red, then that’s the

very reason they will be abolished,”

he said.

“It is very clear that forced mergers

are very much on the government

agenda and that this government

will abolish those councils

that fail the Fit For The Future test

of financial sustainability,” he said.

“This is not withstanding the fact

that Hunters Hill and Lane Cove

spent a lot of money fighting against

the last forced merger attempt and

were awarded court costs, which

this government will not pay after

more than a year.

“Worse still, this government is

cost shifting around $820 million a

year onto councils.

“And this is a government that has

the money to pay because it has

$2.2 billion dollars to squander on

knocking down and rebuilding stadiums.”

The Liberal Party sees the issue

differently and many party members

hold the view that it would be

“unethical” to raise rates or spend

taxpayer’s money “shoring up or

bailing out” economically unviable

councils when that money could

otherwise be spent on schools and

hospitals.

On the Labor side, it believes it

is the Liberal government which is

being “unethical” by “punishing”

councils and ratepayers who stood

up to fight Fit For The Future.

“It is obviously ratepayers that

now wear the cost through the loss

of services that council’s would

otherwise provide with the money

they are owed,” Mr Primrose said.

Lane Cove councillor Andrew Zbik

(ALP) said his council is getting angry

ratepayers demanding the services

he wants to provide.

“We budgeted for these services

out of the money we expected to be

paid from winning the court costs,”

he said.

“So not having the money means

less playground equipment and

fewer potholes repaired.”

In Hunters Hill it means a probable

increase in rates.

The farce of it all is that we are

now looking at spending more ratepayer’s

money on legal action to

recover the money we are already

owed in court awarded costs,” Clr

Zbik said.

Mr Primrose also believes there is

a principle at stake.

“I think it is outrageous that when

a court fines a person or a business

and orders them to pay costs they

have a few weeks to pay or face the

consequences, but here we have a

government that hasn’t paid court

ordered costs for more than a year

and there is no indication they’ll do

so in the near future,” he said.

“That’s one rule for this government

and another rule for everyone

else.”

Councillor Zbik is the Labor candidate

for Lane Cove and said his

recent campaigning indicates a

backlash against the state government

and continued support for the

two local councils, now governed

by independent mayors.

“I’ve never met so many pissed

off Liberal voters, but what has particularly

struck me is that many of

them live in blue ribbon Liberal suburbs

and particularly on the Hunters

Hill peninsula.”

The Labor candidate said he welcomed

Mr Primrose’s commitment

that a Labor government will not

only pay the court costs owed to

our councils – within the first weeks

of government - but will let local

people decide if they want to merge

councils, or not.

Save Hunters Hill Municipality

spokesman Phil Jenkyn OAM has

spent the last year fighting a court

battle to force the government to

release a top secret KPMG report

used to justify “cost savings from

forced mergers” that formed the basis

of the Fit For The Future policy.

He agreed that forced mergers are

not off the Premier’s agenda and

that councils are deliberately being

denied the money they are owed.

“How could a refusal to pay court

ordered costs to councils, after

more than a year, be anything other

than deliberate ?” he said

‘’ What I stress is that Hunters Hill

was found by IPART to be both sustainable

and efficient but is being

starved of funds by rate pegging as

well as cost shifting.’’

ASIC’s comparison rates ridiculous

THERE are two reasons why making a decision

based on the ridiculous ASIC-invented

‘Comparison Rate’ is not a good idea.

Comparison Rates

- although well-intentioned

- are simply

useless and I’ll

continue lobbying

ASIC to scrap them

because I don’t think

the financial sector

regulator is giving

Australians enough

credit (a shocking

pun, but justified in

the circumstances).

A Comparison Rate

(CR) is a made-up,

notional rate which

tries to include certain

fees into the actual

interest rate, in

a child-like attempt

The Barefoot Broker

to estimate the true

cost of a loan.

It’s the equivalent of

a car salesman giving

Paul Edwin

Foster

Solicitor and

Partner

with Jason Khoury

you a price on a car

that wraps up their

estimate of fuel and

repairs in the next

few years.

If you have a mortgage

you’re probably

paying a monthly fee

or a “package” of between

$120 and $395

per annum.

For a $600,000

mortgage, a $395 annual

fee represents

only 0.06% on top of

the rate.

So why the big difference

between actual

cost and the way

it’s portrayed as a

comparison rate?

Would you believe

the advertised comparison

rates are

based on a $150,000

loan.

And sure, on a small

loan like that, the annual

fee represents

0.26% - and that’s

also why a packaged

product wouldn’t be

recommended for

such a small loan.

But doesn’t a “package”

also provide a

free Platinum credit

card and dual offset

accounts at no cost

- surely these savings

are factored in to the

comparison rate? No.

The true costs of

a loan are all pretty

much wrapped up in

three questions you

need to ask your broker:

SET UP COSTS:

“What is the total

cost, to the cent, to

set up this loan/refinance?

Is there a rebate?”

ONGOING FEES:

“What are the ongoing

annual (or monthly)

fees?

RATE: “Including

any lifetime discount,

what is the actual

rate please?”

Finally, let’s get rid

of comparison rates

as there are some

suckers out there relying

on them when

they make their decisions.

Ask your broker

THE BAREFOOT BROKER - iChoice’s Jason

Khoury says comparison rate should be

scrapped

for a 10-Year Cost

Comparison Projection

taking the three

things above into account.

Ten years will iron

out any initial rebate,

discounted first year

rate and all that nonsense.

Parramatta River surveyed for

waterfront amenities for boats

SITES along the Parramatta River waterfront were recently inspected

as potential locations for new boat ramps, pontoons and jetties.

The site inspections were

made by Lane Cove MP

Anthony Roberts and Hunters

Hill Deputy Mayor Ben

Established 1984

Collins alongside Roads

Minister Melinda Pavey

who wants to see improved

car and boat trailer parking.

Mr Roberts told The

and surveyed sites include

Bennelong Park in Putney

and the dinghy storage and

launching facilities in Hunters

Hill

These projects will improve

the overall capacity

and amenity of boating infrastructure

at a number of

locations in the Lane Cove

electorate and are based on

direct engagement with the

local boating community,”

he said.

Minister Pavey said the

upgrades will also bring

significant benefits for Sydney’s

tourism industry.

“Boating is a key driver of

tourism, especially at popular

inland waterways,” she

said.

These local infrastructure

improvements are your fees

at work.

They go back into the

boating community to enable

projects that deliver

safe and convenient access

to waterways, like the Parramatta

River.”

Local tenants are the first in

Sydney to transfer with Link

Last week, around 3,000 people living in public

housing in the Ryde, Hornsby and Ku-ringgai

local government areas became the first

tenants in Sydney to have their homes transferred

to not-for-profit community housing

provider, Link Housing.

The transfer of these tenancies is part of the

NSW Government’s Social Housing Management

Transfer program and is the first, and

largest, transfer in Sydney.

“With increased housing stress and cost of

living pressures, social housing has become a

critical issue for a growing number of people,”

Link Housing CEO Andrew McAnulty said.

The NSW Government is transferring its social

housing tenancies to community housing

providers like Link Housing to help deliver better

outcomes for those living in social housing.”

The transfer program delivers on the NSW

Government’s Future Directions for Social

Housing in NSW strategy, which outlines the

Government’s vision for social housing over

the next 10 years.

The property transfers are a step in the right

direction,” Mr McAnulty said.

“Community housing providers, like Link

Housing, are in a unique position to implement

real change to social housing.

“Link Housing supports the government’s

mission to create a stronger, more diverse social

housing sector in Australia.”

The change also allows Link Housing to reinvest

any surplus into growing social and affordable

housing assets for the community.

The NSW Government is planning to increase

the number of properties managed by community

housing providers from 19 to 32 per

cent and awarded Link Housing the tender to

manage 1,875 social housing tenancies in the

Ryde, Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai precincts in

October 2017.

The transfer will result in more responsibility

for Link Housing, a company that has grown

three-fold in the past 18 months.

Link Housing recently opened a new office

in West Ryde and has a larger office in

Chatswood.

Anyone affected by the tenancy change is encouraged

to call Link Housing on 9412 5111 or

visit linkhousing.org.au.

Ex-Ryde Mayor to

appeal conviction

Former Ryde Mayor Ivan Petch will serve a two-year Intensive Corrections

Order (ICO) after a “blackmail” conviction in October related to an exchange

with council’s Acting GM over reimbursement of legal costs, confirmed by a

legal expert as perfectly legitimate.

Judge Nicole Noman SC

handed down the sentence in

Campbelltown District Court

on Monday, allowing the

veteran elected representative

and Emeritus Mayor to get

on with his life practically

unaffected.

Notwithstanding the

outcome, ICAC and the

DPP were criticised in

submissions by Mr Petch’s

legal representatives, over

attempts to “aggravate” the

offence post-trial, to allow for

a harsher sentence.

The court was urged to

reject the Crown’s attempts

inviting it “to find facts which

aggravate the offending

conduct by references

extraneous to the trial”.

Submissions for Mr Petch,

said the court should reject

“evidence as to the value of

the legal costs and the City

of Ryde Council Code of

Conduct, neither of which was

tendered at trial.”

The offence is akin to

an error of judgment, free

from any factors which

may otherwise serve to

enhance the offender’s moral

culpability,” it was submitted.

Despite stating at trial the

Crown did not intend to pursue

a custodial sentence, Crown

Prosecutor Donna Daleo’s

sentencing submissions

downplayed references of

good character provided for

Mr Petch.

Ms Daleo also argued

against a lenient sentence

on the basis of Mr Petch’s

unblemished criminal history,

citing what she claimed was

a “serious breach of trust”

associated with the offence.

She relied on the harshest

available legal precedents,

including the case of former

Labor politician Eddie

Obeid and another involving

another ex-Labor minister Ian

Macdonald and former union

leader, John Maitland, which

has been appealed over

concerns of a miscarriage of

justice.

Judge Noman - appointed

to the NSW District Court two

years ago after a relatively

long career as a Crown

Prosecutor - rejected the

cases’ relevance primarily

on the basis they involved

completely different charges.

“In the circumstances of the

case the Crown submits that a

sentence of full time custody

is required,” Ms Daleo

concluded in her submissions.

Mr Petch said he planned

to immediately lodge an

appeal against his conviction

and and would “start the ball

rolling” as soon as he could

meet his legal representatives

for further advice.

Caleb Graham, Carter Margetson (vice captain), Lachlan Gosbell (captain) and Finn Christensen.

Boronia Park’s mighty junior cricketers

crowned State Knockout champions

THESE budding cricketers from Boronia Park Primary School have created history by

winning the prestigious NSW State Primary Schools Sports Association Cricket Knockout

Shield.

Under the guidance

of Sydney Tigers grade

cricketer Matt Pasternatsky

and school teacher

Kerrie O’Brien, the Boronia

Park young guns

etched their names in

the record books last

week when they defeated

Caves Beach (Lake

Macquarie) in the final at

Raby Sports Complex to

become the first school in

the Ryde and Hunters Hill

districts to lift the trophy.

It was another dominant

performance from the Boronia

X1 as they chalked up

a magnificent 60-run victory

in the 25 overs per side

Shield decider.

Earlier in the day, the team

toppled Lake Albert Public

School (Wagga) in a hard

fought semi final by 24 runs

to advance.

For many of the boys it

was a first opportunity to

play on turf wickets at the

Campbelltown complex.

Along the way to their

championship success the

talented Boronia Park outfit

defeated Ultimo Public

School, Mortdale Public

School, Neutral Bay Public

School, Cherrybrook Public

School, Niagara Park (Central

Coast) Public School

and Caddies Creek (Glenwood)

Public School in the

preliminary rounds.

Teacher Mrs O’Brien has

done a wonderful job in

moulding the team into

a powerful unit and has

proved an inspiration to

the boys with her words of

encouragement and cricket

nous.

She was supported by

the capable Pasternatsky,

a new teacher at the school

with first grade experience

in the NSW Premier Cricket

competition.

Inner West Harbour

(Gladesville) junior representative

stars Carter Margetson

and team captain

Lachlan Gosbell topped the

run-scoring and also made

valuable contributions

with the ball.

Margetson, who flew to

Perth after the Shield win

to represent NSW at the

National Primary Schools

Sports Association Cricket

Championships, is an

outstanding prospect

from the Ryde-Hunters

Hill Pirates Junior Cricket

Club.

A tall and powerful all

rounder he was part of

a potent attack that included

left arm paceman

Finn Christensen,

Jamie Doust, seamers

Sm O’Brien and Angus

McRae, swing merchant

James Meszaros, the skilful

Gosbell and spinner

Caleb Graham.

In the final Boronia Park

batted first and after a

shaky start on a difficult

pitch managed to register

120 runs off their allotted

Netball is open to players seven (7) years

and older, and the North Ryde RSL Netball

Club has teams that cover the age groups

of NetSetGO, Juniors, Cadets and Seniors.

hiatus, or someone who has never played

netball before, we can find a team for you.

25 overs with top knocks

from Margetson (34) and

representative all rounder

Christensen who was run

out for 29.

Boronia Park were tottering

at 5-41 before the

stroke playing Margetson

and Christensen combined

for a match-turning

sixth wicket partnership

of 69 under extreme pressure.

The boys then produced

a superb bowling and

fielding display to skittle

the Caves Beach line up

for 60 with spinner Graham

(3-13 off five overs),

pace ace Meszaros (2-6

off three), seamers Margetson

(1-5 off four),

McRae (1-9 off three) and

Christensen (1-12 off five)

the pick of the Boronia

Park attack.

Down five wickets and

requiring 90 runs off

twelve overs the Caves

Beach side collapsed to

be all out - well short of

their target with four overs

remaining.

Some 309 teams entered

the competition

from schools throughout

NSW with Mrs O’Brien

encouraging the Boronia

boys to participate in the

coveted knockout series.

Boronia Park Primary

capped a memorable

week when they added

the Northern Zone

PSSA Cricket title to the

school’s trophy cabinet

with a victory over Ryde

East Public School last

Friday in the final staged

at L.H Waud Field.

McRae (23 retired) and

Gosbell (22 retired) top

scored as Boronia Park

posted 4-106 off their 15

overs before routing Ryde

East for 37.
