Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Darcy Barkal
The New Trier gymnast
finished third in the allaround
at the Spartan
Classic Friday, Dec. 7.
When did you start
doing gymnastics and
why?
I started doing gymnastics
when I was around 5.
I was a very energetic and
I would always be jumping
or flipping around the
house. One day my mom’s
best friend, who did gymnastics
in college, suggested
my parents put me
in gymnastics. She recommended
a gym in the
area I should try and I’ve
stuck with gymnastics ever
since.
What’s your
favorite part about
gymnastics?
My favorite part about
gymnastics is the thrill of
it and also the freedom of
the sport. It’s always thrilling
and exciting when I do
well at a big competition
or I get a new skill during
practice I never thought I
could do. I also love how
I have the freedom to do
the skills I want and to be
able to keep adding harder
skills into my routines.
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a
meet?
Before a meet I always
listen to a certain playlist
I make specifically for the
season I’m in and I have
to watch a movie the night
before to distract myself.
I also always carry little
good luck charms I got
when I first started competing
gymnastics in my
meet bag.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
One thing people don’t
know about me is that I
come off as super shy but
I’m very loud once you get
to know me. I also love the
Beatles.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would it
be and why?
If I could travel anywhere,
I would probably
travel to Greece. My sister
and I have always wanted
to go together to enjoy the
food and the beaches.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier?
My favorite gymnastics
moments have probably
been getting a school record
on vault and hearing
my teammates cheer for
me and being there to support
me. Outside of gymnastics
my favorite moments
are spending time
with my amazing friends
I’ve met.
What’s the best part
about being a New
Trier athlete?
The best part about being
a New Trier athlete is
the energy and the school
spirit. The amazing coaching
staff and team help me
meet my goals during the
season and they also make
season the best time of
year.
What’s the best advice
you’ve ever gotten?
The best advice I’ve
ever gotten is to be the best
version of myself I can be
and also to live in the moment
and just have fun.
What’s your favorite
restaurant and what
do you get there?
My favorite restaurant
is probably Dengeos. I always
get their Greek Salad
and garlic bread.
What’s your guilty
pressure?
My guilty pleasure is
probably Netflix. I watch
so many TV shows and
movies on Netflix, I sometimes
stay up too late binge
watching a show.
If you won a million
dollars, what would
you do with it?
I would donate money
to homeless shelters and
Special Olympics. I would
also want to travel to different
parts of the world
with my family.
