LET'S GO CARAVAN &

CAMPING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

South Australia is a State of contrasts

and surprises. There are 11 distinct

regions to explore, encompassing

everything from rugged coasts to sandy

swimming beaches, wine country, the

mighty Murray River and the awesome

Outback. Choose one region to suit the

season or indulge in an extended drive

holiday across the State for a mix of

relaxation, adventure and discovery.

Anyone with a passion for nature and

wildlife is particularly well catered for.

The State features vast expanses of

untouched beaches and wilderness with

some stunning national and conservation

parks along the way.

Swim with wild sea lions off Baird Bay on

the Eyre Peninsula, or take a dip with wild

dolphins on a Temptation Sailing cruise,

from Glenelg Beach (just 20 minutes from

Adelaide’s CBD).

Alternately you can stay on the shore,

watching up to 100 Southern Right

Whales frolic in the waters off Head of

Bight on the Eyre Peninsula or Victor

Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The

whales travel from Antarctica to South

Australia’s oceans each winter to give

birth and raise their young.

Kangaroo Island is another worldrenowned

wildlife haven. With thirty per

cent of its land protected as national and

conservation parks you can expect a

holiday full of stunning natural beauty,

bird life and native animals. You can even

walk amid a colony of wild sea lions at

Seal Bay.

South Australia’s popularity as a travel

destination also has a lot to do with good

living. Fresh, quality food, award winning

wines, vibrant arts festivals and major

national and international sporting events

are part of the locals’ lifestyle.

Eat and drink your way around world

famous wine regions such as the Barossa

and Clare Valley, visit Adelaide’s vibrant

Central Market or relax on one of the

city’s many multi cultural café strips.

Many parks in South Australia will welcome

your pet if you plan to bring it on holiday.

You can easily check which caravan parks

accepts pets by looking at the park listings

throughout this magazine.

PETS

TRAVELLING WITH

Important things to remember when travelling

with your pet.

• Always ring ahead to check your pet will be

welcome. Caravan parks that take pets will have

conditions. This may mean they only accept

certain animals, or they may not take pets

during peak periods. Avoid disappointment by

always ringing the park.

• Pets will generally be accepted on sites and in

your accommodation. They will usually not be

allowed in cabins or in amenities areas.

• Some parks do now offer a pet friendly cabin

option – please check the listings in the guide to

see if this option is available.

• When contacting the park, always talk to park

managers about pet rules and if there are any

pet friendly common areas in the park. Some

parks are finding spaces to allow pet owners

and their pets to move off their site and socialise

with others.

• Pets will not enjoy their holiday if left unattended,

so if you are leaving the park, always take your

pet with you.

• Remember to keep your pet on a leash at all

times and to clean up any mess left by your pet

immediately.

• Barking dogs can be a nuisance and detract

from peoples enjoyment, please keep your dog

quiet when staying in a caravan park.

• Please be aware that other people in the park

are also on holiday, keep the impact of your pet

to a minimum so that it does not detract from

other peoples enjoyment.

• Enjoy your holiday with your pet.

Please note Guide Dogs, Hearing Dogs, and Assistance Dogs are allowed different conditions to pets. Owners of such dogs are also advised to ring ahead and check with the caravan park.

South Australia has some fantastic cycling

trails. Bike trails and cycling paths are

located all around the state and are a great

way to see Adelaide and the regions.

Whether it’s a leisurely ride through the

vineyards or some extreme two wheeled

mountain biking action. Here are just a few

great cycling trails:

RIVER TORRENS LINEAR PARK

Ideal for families, the Linear Park runs

through the city all the way between the

Mt Lofty Ranges and the coastal suburb of

Henley Beach. You can start from anywhere

along the trail and the picturesque river

bank reveals its different landscapes along

the way.

ENCOUNTER BIKEWAY FLEURIEU

PENINSULA

This cycling trail follows the coastline to

link the towns of Victor Harbor, Port Elliot,

Middleton and Goolwa. Pick up part of the

ride from any of the 4 towns along the way.

A flat ride it is suitable for all ages and

fitness levels.

RIESLING TRAIL CLARE VALLEY

27km trail running along an old railway line.

This trail takes in farmland, vineyards and

wooded areas with options for cellar door

stops along the way, this easy pace trail

stretches from Auburn to Barinia.

COAST TO VINES RAIL TRAIL

This trail starts at the seaside suburb of

Marino in Adelaide and follows the former

WALKING

There are hundreds of great walking trails in

South Australia. Walking can bring you

close to nature and is an ideal form of

seeing the sights while also getting some

exercise. There are walks in national parks,

heritage walks and coastal walks.

For serious walkers here are

some great trails:

HEYSEN TRAIL

One of the world's great walking trails this

1200km trail starts at Cape Jervis on

Fleurieu Peninsula and winds its way

through many regions of the state with its

end point in Parachilna Gorge in the

Flinders Ranges. The Trail has been designed

to cater for both the serious backpacker

and for the day walker who might choose to

do short walks along different sections.

WATERFALL GULLY TO MT LOFTY ADELAIDE

Just 2km the walk ascends from the

Adelaide Plains to the Mt Lofty Ranges.

Due to the fact that it climbs 475m from

bottom to top it is loved by fitness fanatics.

It is one of Adelaide’s most beautiful

metropolitan walks traversing through

eucalypt forest and with fantastic views

over the city of Adelaide.

WALK THE YORKE, YORKE PENINSULA

This is a 500km trail that traces the entire

coastline of the Yorke Peninsula revealing

cliffs, beaches and scenery. The trail skirts

mangroves, grain paddocks, seaside towns

and beautiful untouched beaches. Pick up

the walk at any spot around the Peninsula.

WILDERNESS TRAIL, KANGAROO ISLAND

This 61km trail starts inside Flinders

Chase National Park and traverses pristine

beaches, cliff tops and popular KI

attractions such as Remarkable Rocks and

Kelly Hill Caves. There are 5 designated

stages of the walk so check out what suits

your interest and fitness level.

For the not-so-serious

walker:

How about a walk suited to your lifestyle or

interest group? There are walks for people

with prams, for kids of varying age groups,

walks for people with dogs, walks around

specific conservation parks, walks for

wildflower enthusiasts, birdwatchers,

CHECKLIST FOR

A TROUBLE-

FREE HOLIDAY

A trouble-free holiday is a joy – but nothing will spoil your holiday

mood more than a mechanical mishap that could have been

prevented. Listed below is a basic checklist. It’s wise to develop

your own, which is specific to your van. Put it on your phone or

print it out and laminate it so you can use it again and again in any

conditions. It certainly makes your pre-trip “to do” tasks a lot

easier. At the end of this page is a list of companies that can assist

you. You should consult the experts when you are still ‘new to the

game’ or if issues such as stability are a concern. From time to

time, even if you are an ‘old hand’, getting a complete check of the

mechanical condition of your van is a wise investment.

CAR

CARAVAN EXTERIOR

How long since your gas cylinders and LPG regulators were

checked? Ensure your gas cylinders are completely off and well

secured before driving Is it time to flush out water tanks and

check for mould? Water tank filled How are your brakes?

Make sure you do a small test drive before your big trip and leave

time for remedial work if required Wheel bearings adjusted

Wheel nuts tight Check the condition of your tyres,

including spares, and that the tyre pressure matches your load

If you have changed tyres yourself, always remember to

retighten the nuts once the van is completely back on the ground

Does your handbrake need adjustment? What is the status of

safety chains and the jockey wheel?

Note: It is advisable to have the caravan serviced by a specialist

prior to the journey.

GPS equipment and communications that are appropriate to the

Staying Connected on Your Next

Outdoor Adventure

If you’re planning to shun the daily grind and escape to a

scenic riverfront or off-the-grid campsite with your family,

great! Start organising right away! Apart from the usual

necessities including clothing and personal care items,

planning an outdoor adventure demands special

considerations for what you’d need to keep travelling safe,

You are most likely a mobile phone user. With a GPS

equipped smartphone. While mobile phone companies

boast that their network can provide coverage for up to

95% of Australians, what they are not telling you is that

Mount for your devices

Once you have your phone or tablet in your vehicle for

communication, navigation and entertainment, you will

need the right type of mount to secure the device safely

and effectively for adventure driving.

RAM mounts are heavy duty mounting systems designed

to secure a variety of devices in a wide range of vehicles

including cars, 4WDs, caravans, motorhomes, kayaks…

and even boats! RAM mounts are the very systems the

US and Australian Defence Forces use for mounting a

wide range of equipment including laptops,

communications and navigation equipment. If a RAM

mount can’t hold it, nothing will.

Mobile phone range extender kit

A mobile phone range extender kit will enable you to

connect your mobile phone to an external antenna in your

vehicle. It will improve your phone reception as well as

voice and data connectivity in areas with limited mobile

coverage and signal. Speak to the experts, be aware of

illegal boosters bought online.

Satellite phone

Some areas are so remote that no signal can be detected.

This is where you can use a satellite phone or satellite

messenger device to communicate. Hiring is an option for

short trips.

UHF radio

A UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio is an effective way

for maintaining contact on the highways and in rural

areas with no mobile coverage. Use it to access

information, communicate with others in your convoy,

or to seek assistance. You can do so by scanning all the

channels with your UHF to establish contact. Importantly,

it is your vital link to access help when things go wrong

on the road.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges

National Park

Known as Ikara to the Adnyamathanha

people, this ancient and rugged landscape

is one of South Australia’s most iconic

destinations. Visit from April to October

when the temperatures are cooler to make

the most of the extensive bushwalking and

camping experiences.

Innes National Park

The rugged coast of Innes National Park

offers plenty of white sandy coves nestled

amongst cliffs to explore and is a paradise

for beach-lovers during spring and summer.

Anglers can fish for salmon from the shore

at Browns Beach, or try for mullet, tommy

ruffs, squid or even snook and snapper

from Stenhouse Bay jetty.

Naracoorte Caves

These World Heritage listed caves are one

of the world’s most important fossil sites.

For half a million years the caves acted as

pitfall traps and predator dens, bones

collected – layer upon layer, year after year

– creating a rich fossil record of the ancient

animals. With the caves staying at a

constant 17 degrees centigrade, Naracoorte

Caves is a destination for all seasons. Selfguided,

guided and adventure caving tours

are available year-round.

Witjira National Park

This desert oasis features more than 120

mound springs and is an important site to

the local Indigenous people. The water in the

Dalhousie Main Spring is around 37 degrees,

making it perfect for a relaxing warm soak to

wash away that camping grime. The best

time to visit is between April and September.

Coffin Bay National Park

The calm, pristine coves of Coffin Bay

National Park are not only perfect for

camping but also perfect for swimming,

kayaking and fishing. Visit in spring or

summer to make the most of your beach

get-away.

while the Adelaide Hills, with its burgeoning reputation as a cool

along with the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island, are studded
