Message from the President
Dear HBA Members,
It is the Holiday Season and time to give thanks. So here
are some things that I am thankful for this year.
I am thankful for all of
the fathers and mothers
that get their children
interested in construction
and pass down their
construction knowledge. I
am lucky enough to have
a father that introduced
me to construction. It
started with helping me
build a dog house, then a
tree house, then remodel
a house, etc. He showed me how rewarding and fun
construction can be and that it can provide a good income.
When I look at the membership of our Home Builders
Association (HBA), I see a lot of fathers, mothers, sons
and daughters working together like Mulford Plumbing,
Homewood Electric, Kelly Heating, Hodge Construction
and Watts Group to name a few.
I am thankful for the opportunity to serve a term as
president of The Greater Iowa City Area HBA. It has been

Kevin McCreedy
Kevin McCreedy has been involved with The Greater Iowa
City Area HBA for many years and is a long-time member
of the Remodelers Council. Next year, he will serve as vice
chair for the council and its representative on the Iowa
City Area HBA Board
of Directors. Kevin was
recently honored as our
2018 Remodeler of the
Year. He enjoys being
actively involved in the
HBA because it allows
him to network with
others in the construction
field and exposes him
to the latest trends and
technology in the building
industry.
Kevin is co-owner of McCreedy-Ruth Construction and
has been in business more than 20 years. He finished
high school in 1993 and graduated with a degree in
Construction Technology from Kirkwood Community
College in 1995. Kevin also served six years in the Iowa
Army National Guard.
Growing up in a small town on a farm just south of Iowa
City taught Kevin the importance of working hard and
being honest. He and his wife Mindy have been married
14 years and reside in North Liberty along with their
daughters. During his spare time, Kevin is involved in the
girls’ activities as well as community and church projects.
an experience that I have enjoyed very much. It reinforced
my belief that we have a great membership group and that
we are more powerful and influential together than we
are alone. There are so many wonderful and committed
members. If you would have asked me in January of
2018 what I was looking forward to least during my term
as president it would have been leading membership
meetings and writing this monthly column. But, as I finish
writing my last president’s message, I realize that leading
those meetings and writing these messages are the two
things that I have enjoyed the most.
Finally, I am thankful for a strong support system both
personally and professionally. We have a strong HBA
membership and a committed board. You make this a great
organization. I have a great employer. Watts Group and
specifically Gary Watts encouraged me to become active in
the HBA and have allowed me to spend time away from
the office for HBA commitments. And finally, I am thankful
for a wonderful family. My wife and kids have always
supported me in everything I do.

DeMaris Receives CBJ
C-Suite Award
Hills Bank and Trust Senior Vice President and CFO
Shari DeMaris received the Corridor Business Journal’s
(CBJ) 2018 C-Suite Award for Chief Financial Officer
Nov. 7 during a luncheon at the Cedar Rapids Marriott.
Shari was honored for her leadership on projects big
and small, from implementing a new Enterprise Risk
Management System to straightening out customer
service wrinkles in a new shareholder dividend
reinvestment plan. The CBJ this year reinvented last
year’s CFO of the Year Awards as the C-Suite Awards
to help recognize even more of the executives who
perform amazingly behind the scenes. Congratulations,
Shari, on your well-deserved recognition!

HBA Members Honored by
Iowa City Chamber of Commerce
Two Greater Iowa City Area HBA members were honored at The Iowa City Area
Chamber of Commerce’s 30th annual A Toast to Our Communities ceremony Nov.
8 at Iowa City’s The Graduate Hotel. Ryan Bell of Locals Love Us received the Eliot
Keller Small Business of the Year Award, while Bill Easton with William Easton Design
was named Ambassador of the Year. The event is held to celebrate local businesses,
nonprofits and leaders. Congratulations, Ryan and Bill!
HBA Exposes Students to
Skilled Trades at Career Fair
The Greater Iowa City Area HBA was on hand to talk about working in the skilled
trades during the 4th Annual Johnson County Career Fair held at the Kirkwood
Regional Center at the University of Iowa in Coralville. Nearly 500 Johnson County
high school students attended the Nov. 7 event that connects students with local and
regional businesses highlighting possibilities in the Creative Corridor.
Andy Martin of Martin Construction, G.T. Karr of Sueppel’s Siding & Remodeling
and Iowa City Area HBA Executive Officer Karyl Bohnsack worked the HBA table
armed with information, a thermal imaging camera and a laptop demonstrating
AutoCAD software.
“I enjoyed conversing with students and teachers one on one. It was a good
opportunity to encourage students interested in the trades that construction is a
viable career path,” noted G.T. “As always Karyl did a great job promoting all that
our local HBA and Kirkwood Community College is doing to help educate our future
workforce and connect them to local jobs.”
Additionally, HBA members Hills Bank and Trust Company, McCreedy-Ruth
Construction and Price Electric had individual booths to talk about their businesses.
Thanks go to these members for sharing their time and knowledge with students and
getting them thinking about working in the trades!

Award. Ambassadors celebrate the success of area businesses and organizations,
network with members and more. “It’s a great honor. Among those I owe
thanks are the businesses and people that are the reasons for ribbon cuttings and
groundbreakings” said Bill. “Many events we attend represent the culmination of risks
by ordinary people who have a dream of owning their own business. I love learning
about what challenges they encountered and how they overcame them.”

stopped by the HBA table and also picked up brochures detailing how much money they can
make, education requirements, career paths and more.
Ryan Bell (left), Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Locals Love Us franchise owner, receives his
Eliot Keller Small Business of the Year Award. “It’s very validating to be recognized.
I think we were considered because we bring a fresh, new and trusted perspective on
how to identify the area’s most well-respected businesses,” said Ryan. “Locals Love Us
is a great resource for lifelong area residents and certainly helpful for any new person
or family moving here. Plus, we’ve proven to be a solid advertising resource because
today’s consumers want the best, most reliable local businesses.”
