There is gols in social

networks, of course.

But there is also gold

outside of them.

“Everything that glitters is not gold”... This is especially true nowadays.

When appearance eclipses the background more than ever. Reality is often as obvious as it

is empty, without substance. A few days ago I read the story of a Californian rock group

that had managed to put together a tour in the United Kingdom thanks to their enormous

popularity on social media. The opportunity seemed to be a good deal for several gig

venues in different British cities. Everyone wanted a piece of the action. The fans gave

thousands of ‘likes’ to the posts that announced the concerts and everyone predicted a

huge success. But when the first concert opened, absolutely no spectators showed up.

Everything soon came to light: it was all a fake. The fans. The followers. The likes. And

the question everyone asked was why nobody had bother to ascertain anything.

In this era of fake news, global addiction

to social networks and post-truths,

establishing the true value of people

today is a fundamental challenge.

A challenge that, beyond the industry we work in, will define us and our future as a society.

A few years ago some people believed that being famous on social networks was like being

rich in Monopoly... instead today, many people think that if something is not found on

Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube, it must not exist in real life. Neither one thing nor the

other! Today many are earning real money thanks to their popularity on social (good for

them!), while there are others who are no less valuable because their story began in an

analog world, rather than a digital one. It is sad that many believe that someone is the

inventor of the wheel because their posts with wheels have the most likes, and many others

tend to appreciate some pros above others because they think “fans, likes, and followers” are

today’s unit of universal measure. What do I think? Well, there is gold in social networks, of

course. But there is also gold outside of them... and in both places not everything that

glitters is gold! Wanting to shine is great. But remember to check that what is behind that

first layer of shine is real, has substance, and is made to last. And don’t ever forget that later,

when the smoke disappears, all that will be left is... the truth.

Lauren Daigle

Cynthia Diersen: I love this boho chic look. It says ‘girl next door’ with such simple and clean makeup.

The hair color is in trend. The ends could be a bit more polished but I love how casual this look is.

Hair: 8/Make-up: 7.8/Style: 7.5/Vote 7.8

Richy kandasamy: I love how Lauren embraces a contemporary vibe with her side braid.

Her warm, earthy hair colour complements her skin tone. The make-up is perfect - simple and clean.

Hair: 8 Make-up: 10/Style: 8/Vote 9.0

Charlie price: I’m a sucker for deep red haircolor - luscious waves and soft natural makeup always

work and coalesce perfectly with her image.

Hair: 9/Make-up: 9/Style: 9/Vote 9.0

DAVID BARRON: Lauren’s hair is effortless and versatile even for an everyday look. I would like to

add a few face-framing layers.

Iggy Azalea

Cynthia Diersen: This long, ultra-sleek look says “fierce warrior” and reflects her strength.

The makeup could distinguish skin and hair tones with more contouring; especially if you’re going

to be in front of bright lights!

Hair: 7.5/Make-up: 6.5/Style: 8.0/Vote 7.3

richy kandasamy: Iggy looks best with her hair pulled back and her make up is always on point.

Her hair color however should be a little bit less gold so it does not blend with her skin tone.

Hair: 7/Make-up: 10/Style: 7/Vote 8.0

charlie price: Slick uber-straight hair looks fresh and stylish to me right now. The tribal braid on

top of rock star “roots” and neutral make-up constitute a polished look perfect for this musical wild child.

Hair: 9/Make-up: 8/Style: 7/Vote 8.0

DAVID BARRON: I love the buttery blonde look and the long sleek look. She has the perfect face for

versatility. Make-up is very subtle which works best for evening make-up.

in her style says “casual precision”! Retro makeup is perfect for this look! I love, love everything about this!

Hair: 9.0/Make-up: 8.9/Style: 9.8/Vote 9.2

Richy kandasamy: I love that Amara embraces her natural texture #mothernaturebeauty. The make-up

and accessories complement her personality well. Her take on the Afro look is super modern, fun and colorful.

From NY

to Paris!

ECRU New York goes global with Fashion Week! Exclusively

sponsoring the Flying Solo SS19 fashion shows in NY & Paris.

ECRU New York has been creating hair and beauty looks for designers for over 15 years, and working with

Flying Solo for over four seasons now at New York Fashion Week, so it was a natural fit that as Flying Solo

decided to embark onto the Paris runway, the brand would follow to collaborate backstage. “For SS19, we

were seeing multiple textures and patterns together within the same garment, and so we took that idea

and incorporated it into the hair for both the New York and Paris runways, creating two different looks

with the same underlying theme,” says Lisa Lobosco, ECRU New York Creative Director.

Flying Solo NYFW

Flying Solo Paris FW

ParisIn

addition to producing beautiful hair for both shows, ECRU New York also provided the makeup

artistry for the New York show, creating a futuristic look centered around a metallic airbrushed mask.

“We are all about the total look! And not only is fashion week an important outlet for displaying our

artistry,” says Lobosco, “but also, we can then bring back education, the cornerstone of our brand,

through the ECRU New York Academy, to elevate the artistry of other stylists.”

Less glitz...

more glamour

Red carpets, fashion runways, bridal parties, proms and

other gala events all call for elegant hairstyling. Updos of

course, but not necessarily... there are other options!

Rocky Vitelli for CHI, Farouk Systems

Photo: Krisna Goodwin

We all love watching those red carpet events where gorgeous celebs sport over-the-top designer gowns and

glamorous coifs. Formal and bridal styling is also part of the hairdresser's art. But what is it that separates the

special occasion do from your everyday look? Pretty much everything! The most important thing to remember

is that healthy hair is beautiful hair - so even a simple sleek, hi-top or nape-of-neck pony tail can be elegant IF

hair is strong, smooth and shiny. Perfectly maintained color treatments (no regrowth), a fresh and modern cut,

texture maybe but NO FRIZZ. After all, these things don't happen over night, so make your plans, book your

consultation, try it out, tweak the details, and make the final appointment.

Men in the limelight

Wahl Education & Artistic Team member Shelley Craft

knows first-hand that bachelor and grooms’ parties are

seeking out haircuts, shaves, facials, massages, manicures

and pedicures offered by barber spas designed specifically

with men in mind. And since many parties are happening

the day of the wedding, the guys are getting straight into

their tux and taking their finished look down the aisle.

“The most common service guys request is the straight

razor shave. But sometimes they need a few suggestions

from our team because men are not used to this experience

being available,” says Craft. “It is important to make the

time special for them, just as you would for a woman. Men

have the same desire to be pampered, they just aren’t used

to asking for it and worry about being judged.”

Attitude counts!

Glam can be an

amped up natural

texture with

bold color or a

coif colored and

sculpted with a

sophisticated flair.

And remember that the most important ingredient in glam is self-confidence. So find a look that is

simply you at your best; something that makes you feel good about yourself. It needn't necessarily

be the most intricate updo you can find. It may be as simple as a adding the right color, highlights,

or texture to your everyday lob, boosting the volume and adding some sexy tendrils to your office

chignon, getting some Hollywood fingerwaves for your pixie, or long, loose curls on your lengths.

Then just make sure that your make-up is on point, your manicure is fresh, and - of course -

that your shoes are polished! Oh yes... and SMILE! You look just fabulous!

A new era of ultra-personalization

The evolution of Wella's ITVA also reflects the evolution of the brand, where

ultra-personalization plays a major role. "New consumers are personalization

obsessed – connecting the physical and digital experiences: it's our duty to capture

and build these experiences for them," said Sylvie Moreau, President of Coty

Professional Beauty. "It's all about the boom of the service experience – rather than

being afraid of the change, we need to fully embrace it: first, going back to what

made our industry successful, which is impeccable service where consultation is

the essence; and then beyond that, expressing those skills through digital means."

Mil posibles matices. Dal Lob (long

+ bob), con largos a los hombros, al Wob (wavy + bob) movido. Para las genéticamente

elegantes llega el Pob (posh + bob) pero para todas, el carré representa una idea: ser

libres. Para interpretar, jugar con la imagen. Bob es independencia.

Cover Story

From dazzling sunsets to holographic shimmer, Goldwell’s

@Pure Pigments has stylists creating awesome color effects!

Featured this month on the cover of Estetica Magazine, Goldwell @Pure Pigments are patented direct-dye additives that are

combined with oxidative hair color to create one-of-a-kind color reflections. One reason the looks created are unique is that

@Pure Pigments don’t mix together. Instead, they sit next to each other on the hair so that each dye reflects its own color.

The line provides a spectrum of colors with unlimited tones and layers. Pure Yellow, Pure Orange, Pure Red, and Pure Violet

create vivid effects while Pearl Blue and Matte Green soften and counteract unwanted

tones. You can see some of these mesmerizing color and reflective effects in the creative

campaign developed to showcase the new products. One of the artists who worked on

the @Pure Pigments campaign is Goldwell Artistic Director Rebecca Hiele. “I collaborated

on the color work for the @Pure Pigments brand photos, and you can see

how much freedom and fun we had! These additives push the limits of traditional hair

color,” says Rebecca. “One of the most exciting things about @Pure Pigments is that

they can take any color palette or look to the next level. With all of the new fall/winter

trends, @Pure Pigments can bring in a prism-like dimension that is simply exquisite!”

When combined with Goldwell’s color

brands –Topchic, Colorance & Nectaya–

@Pure Pigments create truly unique looks.

Jason

Yates

what I love about JPMS is that WE

really care. WE care about salons,

WE care about STYLISTS. Of course

we want to grow the business, but

we want to do it the right way.

Yates joined John Paul Mitchell Systems over six years ago as VP of Marketing, where

he led the marketing strategy for all brands under the JPMS corporate umbrella.

Within two years he had absorbed the role of Vice President of Sales as well, becoming

the first-ever Vice President of Sales and Marketing at JPMS. The guiding principles

behind his leadership role at JPMS include aggressive growth through product

innovation, strategic collaborations, continued investment in salon education and the

commitment to help salons grow their businesses, so we simply had to know more!

We see a lot of other hairdressers that went corporate, but in your position it’s not

so common. How does it feel?

It feels great, obviously and I think it speaks volumes of how important to JPMS

hairdressers are. The company wants somebody who’s a hairdresser to be influential

in the decisions that the company makes... and our hairdresser influence continues

to grow beyond me. The more we understand from salon owners and stylists,

combined with all the other people we have in business, the better... it’s just a winning

formulation. I know it’s not conventional, but it certainly seems to be working well

for us and, thank God, for me too!

It is not common for a brand to select a

hairdresser as a Chief Operating Officer, but

last March Jason Yates was assigned the role at

John Paul Mitchell Systems and now oversees

the daily operations of JPMS worldwide!

92 interview

“We’re really looking at a three hundred and

sixty degree approach on how we help beauty

salons grow their average ticket through

professional services,” says Jason Yates.

He then adds: “We ultimately want to be the first

choice professional hair care brand for stylists

behind the chair.”

How do you see the evolution of different JPMS lines, the color, the tools, the styling?

What we want to do is to cement our position as leader in care and styling products

and we’re doing that by focusing on three particular brands with big potential, which

are Paul Mitchell, Tea Tree and Neuro. The other big area that is a huge focus for us

is professional hair color. We want to be the leading color manufacturer and partner

and to do that, we’re getting very aggressive with our color portfolio. We already have

outstanding color offerings, but there are some products we’re working on that we

will start to introduce over the next two years.

What does it mean to you to ‘Live Beautifully’?

To love what you do and love who you do it with. At JPMS, John Paul DeJoria really

believes in the work-life-family balance, so for me here I’m finally getting the balance

right. I’m spending enough time with my family and enough time at work.

Preventing

hair loss

There are no miracle cures, but hair and scalp care and

prevention continue to be your best bet when it comes to

keeping hair loss at bay. Savvy styling tips can also help.

94 dossier

Thinning hair and hair loss are perhaps more noticeable in men, but statistics indicate that about

one-third of women experience hair loss (alopecia) at some time in their lives, while among postmenopausal

women, as many as two-thirds suffer thinning or bald spots.* The impact can be devastating

for both genders. Today, depending on the actual cause, some medical interventions may help,

but professional hair care brands are targeting prevention with products that help to keep the scalp

healthy and strengthen hair. Specific styling products for both fine and thinning hair together with

invaluable styling tips can boost both volume and self-confidence, keeping hair looking better longer.

Goldwell

The Double Boost Intense Root Lift

Spray can boost volume in fine hair;

Top Whip Shaping Mousse and

Glamour Whip Brilliance Styling

Mousse provide care an luminosity,

Naturally Full Blow-dry & Finish

Bodifying Spray adds fullness and

body; Lagoom Jam Styling Gel

builds volume and texture with

long-lasting hold.

Aveda

New 98% naturally derived Invati Advanced

Solutions for Thinning Hair is a breakthrough

3-step system: Exfoliating Shampoo,

Thickening Conditioner and Scalp Revitalizer.

The system is formulated with a blend of

ginseng, certified organic turmeric and

Aveda’s patented energy ferment to invigorates

the scalp when massaged in. Certified organic

amla instantly thickens hair.

CHI

CHI Power Plus Hair Renewing System is

specifically formulated with Nettle, Red

Clover and a rich blend of botanicals to

care for the foundation of healthy hair and

scalp. It exfoliates, nourishes and revitalizes

the scalp keeping it in optimum condition

to promote fuller, denser-looking hair.

Mop ®

MOP® Lemongrass Volume Whip

makes big and bouncy easy to

achieve. Lemongrass adds volume,

while Grapeseed Oil adds moisture

and shine. Thermal and UV

protectors guard against heat and

styling while also prolonging color.

Eufora

Eufora's Thickening Cleansing and Conditioning

products deliver the latest in scalp and hair science

technology for thicker, fuller and healthier hair.

Eufora's proprietary technology, ProAmino Cell

Complex, works to revitalize the health of the hair

follicle and scalp and improve strength and elasticity.

Unite

The ultimate shampoo and conditioner for

healing and repairing hair, with pure argan

oil, organic Hawaiian white honey and

crushed pearl powder. The rich and creamy

U LUXURY line will replenish and lock in

nutrients your hair loses each day, adding

voluminous body and exquisite shine. The

conditioner also helps protect hair during

heat styling.

Wahl Education & Artistic Team member Shelley Craft of The Men’s Refinery BarberSpa in South

Carolina, advises, “For fine, thinning hair or for the older gentleman, skip the pompadour look, as it

will flop early. I personally like to blow the hair dry without a product and then finish with a grooming

cream.” Allen Ruiz, Aveda Artistic Director Of Hair Styling, says, “I always tell people with thinning hair

that the longer you let your hair air dry in a towel, the worse off you’ll be. Thinning hair dries super-fast

and if you’re seeking volume or fullness, you need to build it into the hair before it has a chance to

dry flat.” He continues, “Use medium heat and a low air speed, then start drying at the roots before

moving onto the mid-shafts and ends. I tend to use a round, natural-bristle brush and I work in small

sections—lifting them up while drying the roots—for maximum control.”

Worth

After a century of

pioneering precision

clippers and barber

tools, Wahl Professional

is releasing the

100 Year Clipper.

W

ith a nod of thanks

to its loyal customers,

the new 100 Year

Clipper is the Wahl

Professional’s pledge

to honor the past,

look toward the future,

and never stop innovating.

A celebration of precision-made

high-quality tools, in its design,

this tool evokes the classic style of

the first Wahl clippers coupled with

the reliable cutting performance

barbers and stylists expect.

“This unit features timeless metal

construction and feels like our

original clippers but, with Wahl’s

new cordless Li-Ion clipper

technology,” said Steve Ardnt,

Senior Product Engineer.

Constructed with an all-metal

housing and taper lever, this

heavy-duty, high impact clipper

packs in more than a vintage

throw-back feel. The advanced

rotary motor feeds consistent

power to tackle thick hair without

bogging down and the high-quality

lithium-ion battery has a 70-

minute run time, while cord/cordless

capabilities ensure continuous

cutting for the busy barber.

Wahl Professional’s corporate

mission has always been to further

the possibilities of the barber and

stylist’s craft. From the beginning,

company founder Leo J. Wahl

prioritized working directly with

barbers to improve the efficiency,

comfort, and convenience of Wahl

Clippers, a practice that continues

through today.

With over 2500 employees

worldwide, Wahl is proud to carry

forward the tradition of innovation

and superior customer service

that was created by Leo J. Wahl.

Headquartered in Sterling, Illinois,

Wahl currently distributes to 176

countries and has eight global

manufacturing facilities as well as

25 sales offices. “The 100 Year

Clipper represents Wahl from 1919

to present. There is so much feeling

evoked from the 100 Year Clipper:

pride, joy dedication and longevity,”

says Tracy Vock, Senior Product

Manager.

The 100 Year Clipper continues to

confirm the strong commitment to

innovation and professional-level

tools that perform, and is a great

addition to any barber’s tool belt.

The best of both worlds,

the Wahl Professional

100 Year Clipper's vintage

styling adds a classic

touch to any barber shop

design, from retro to

industrial chic, but is

packed with cutting-edge

power and performance

to keep up with the
