Editor’s Letter
As we countdown to Christmas and a new year, it is
time to take stock of the outgoing year; what we
achieved and the unfilled dreams. It’s also the time
when events are booked, back to back. I wonder,
why most shows are planned around the festive
season, leaving other days and months with a very
few organised fun activities.
And so, Olamide, aka Badoo, is scheduled for
two major events, before Christmas. It looks like
Lagos is going to shut down, literarily for the
shows. Olamide in this interview with Allure’s Rita
Okoye, promises a ‘supersonic’ event. I want
supersonic going into the new year. Do you? So, let’s
make it a date!
On our fashion pages, the duo of Jemi
Ekunkunbor and Yemisi Suleiman, show us different
trends for men. From the hat to shoes and how to
rock the new bright colour trend. See pp. 3-7. In
our ‘10 minutes’ interview, we introduce you to the
running mate for PDP in Lagos, Mrs Yemisi Busari,
an enlightening, albeit, short entree into the public
sphere. We hope for more. See
p.13.
It’s been a glorious year,
but surely we all hope for
those last minute
surprises, that caps the
year for all of us. So be
it!
Have a great week!
Athleisure
for
MEN
By - Yemisi Suleiman
There is no denying that
athleisure has been trending
in womenswear as well as
menswear for sometime now,
and will continue to do so in
future.
However, what makes this
trend fresh for this year is the
way that the guys are blending
it with smarter pieces. Using
sportswear items and details
to lend athletic accents to
sophisticated looks. They
achieved a chic yet laid-back
appearance that is perfect for a
range of events and occasions.
Here are other ways to rock the
look.
Ways to Wear Bright
Colours for Men
By - Yemisi Suleiman
Bright colours for men have seen a new lease of life in the last fashion season. With designers
sending men down the runways in some of the brightest colours, the trend has worked its way into
mens mainstream fashion, with many adopting the new found love for bright colours and going with
it. Now, even though there are a lot of stylish ways to wear colour, it is very important to know how
to combine the right colours in your clothing. From over the top bold everything, to acessorising
your outfit, here are three ways you can incorporate bold colours to your wardrobe with ease.
Layer Your Bright Colours
If you are not one
for wearing a bright
piece by itself, then
you can always layer
up. You can wear a
plain coloured shirt
open over a bright
t-shirt. These simple
styles are an easy way
to brighten up your
everyday outfits.
One Bright Colour
At A Time
You should wear one bold piece
of colour at a time. Wearing one
piece of colour is eye-catching,
but wearing lots of different
bright colours may confuse other
people and may make you look
like a clown. With this in mind, try
wearing a bright coloured shirt
with navy blue trousers or jeans.
Layer Your Bright Colours
The easiest way of accessorising with
colour and brightening up existing outfits
is by having a colourful accessory. A bright
belt, add colour with pocket sqaures and
ties for a more formal occasion.
Party Time:
Best Foot Forward
FASHION
By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
With the holiday upon us, we are
about entering the party season.
Whether we plan for them or not
the parties keep popping up, office
Christmas party, family gathering,
weddings etc. dressing up for a
party isn’t the same as dressing
up for work. One can easily tell the
difference by the type of shoes
you are wearing.
Are you going for an event? What
you wear on your feet completely
reflects what kind of look you’re
going for. Don’t confine yourself
to your regular work shoes.
Step things up a little with a pair
of shoes with attitude; unusual
embellishment, colour or design.
The loafer for example is a great
a pair of shoes that steps things
up and can go from semi- formal
to formal. They are also very
comfortable as you only have to slip
them on.
From Oxford to Derby, pointees or
loafers, pick a pair that matches
your style and personality. Above
all, look good with what you’re
wearing. Find your style in these
pairs carefully picked out for you.
Why Spot
A HAT
Whether it’s a Fedora, Trilby, Bowler,
Homburg, Pork Pie, Derby, or Top hat, when
shopping for a hat, look out for the shape,
size, material used and the price.
More than these, there are some fundamental
reasons why men spot their hats. Although
not all men subscribe to hats, those who do,
love the look and symbol of strength and
male suave they give.
Reasons To
Wear Hat
Tino Navy
Functional: Hats are
functional fashion pieces
that protect the head from
the burning sun or the rain.
In cold countries, it keeps
the head warm from the
biting cold.
Instrument of style:
One cannot deny that a
hat like the fedora is an
instrument of style especially
if you know how to wear it
and with confidence too.
Hats when worn at certain
angles, helps the wearer
stand out and helps the face
looks better.
Added height: An
interesting twist to hat
wearing is that it gives the
illusion of added height.
If you’d like to look a little
taller, adorn a hat especially
the top hat. In addition,
it also sends a signal of
authority.
REPORTAGE
O.L.A.M.I.D.E:
Ready for the King?
Words By - Rita Okoye
The singer Olamide Adedeji, known by his stage name Olamide and popularly called
Olamide Baddo, or BaddoSneh is the boss of YBNL music record label.
Regarded as ‘the artiste of the people, for the people and loved by the people’.
The Nigerian entertainment industry reveres Olamide for his creativity and a
good heart. He is not the kind of person who quickly gives up. Reasons he keeps
working hard and having hit songs and videos.
Adding to that, he always stays away from ‘scandals’ and ‘dramas’ - this
quality has helped him to soar in the highly competitive music industry.
Although, only 29, his achievements speak volumes as he has won several
prestigious awards. In a few days, December 21 and 23 respectively, he would
take centre stage at Flytime’s Music Festival.’Rhythm Unplugged’ music
concert and of course the 5th edition of ‘Olamide Live In Concert’ (OLIC5).
He shares with Allure his expectations of 2019, and what fans should expect
from him at the two large music shows.
You’re rated as one of the best music artistes in
Nigeria, what has been your staying power?
It has been the Grace of God and the hunger of
course.
Some music pundits believe that at a point you
slowed down, how true?
Yes, I did. I am only human. There’s time and
season for everything. Standing back from situation
gives you perfect view.
Was there a time you wanted to give up on
music?
Yeah, sometimes I feel like going into other
things but music is too addictive for me and paying
off so that has made it difficult for me to make up
my mind.
Your colleagues always mention how you often
come to their rescue at their lowest moments,
what inspires you to always extend a helping
hand?
Well, to this I’d say it costs nothing to lend a
helping hand when you can. We all need
somebody to lean on.
What are your expectations from this year’s
Rhythm Unplugged?
It is going to be a Lituation! Supersonic show.
What should your fans expect during your
performance?
Just get the fire fighters to be on stand by.
Come Olamide Live (OLIC5), what should we all
look forward to, as it also clashed with Wizkid’s
concert?
Expect a great show. It will be interactive and
also going to take you away from all the madness
and traffic this season. It’s gonna be an
360 A game, top notch sound and lighting
and many more.
Last year OLIC was at Teslim Balogun
stadium, Surulere, why was it moved
back to Eko hotels?
Last year was for giving back to the
people which we intend to always do God
willing, once in a while.
How do you maintain your voice, after
strenuous music shows?
I don’t stress it, but I take lime honey
and hot water .
How would you rate your musical
success in 2018?
Average! I sure can do way better. Yeah,
It started with the banger for the year
Science Student, in the middle of the year
there was Kana, there was also Motigbana
and now Poverty Die ! But people’s hunger
for music is very high now so 3 hits in year
isn’t enough in my own opinion. I don’t
know about others.
How was your 2018 in general, did you
achieve your set goals for the year?
I did but I’m not satisfied yet. Oliver
Twist? Yes, you can call me that. Though
I’m grateful to God for his blessings, I just
want to surpass my own imagination.
What were your most challenging
moments of 2018?
When I lost my mum that
broke me but I picked myself up
because I knew I have to stay
healthy for my loved ones
and me.
Common
sense is
my most
expensive
fashion item,
I always
wear
everywhere
I go.
Any regrets?
None. Not at all. No regrets.
What is the most expensive fashion
accessory you have at the moment?
Common sense is my most expensive
fashion item; I always wear everywhere I
go.
What are those three things you can’t
step out without having on you?
I cannot go out without my token, a
bottle of water and my ATM card.
How do you maintain your dreadlocks?
Ah ah !!! I get some one to treat my
dreads every weekend, and I’ve got loads
of products I apply everyday.
What are your visions for 2019?
I will be successful and reach out more.
Do you have any advice for Nigerians
on the forthcoming general elections?
You can decide your future by voting the
right person. All you need to do is know
who or what you stand for in life.
As your show is a key element of the
Rhythm Festival kicking off with
Rhythm Unplugged show on the 21st
December and concluding on the 23rd
with OLAMIDE Live! what shall we
expect from you?
Expect a great show. It will be interactive
and will also take you away from the
madness and hassle this festive season.
Well, with Rhythm Unplugged and their
team. You know they always bring an
amazing experience. So it’s a beautiful
Are You A Food Addict?
Obesity- Watch What You Eat
The tendency of smokers to gain weight after
quitting has often been seen. This can be
explained by the fact that Nicotine has the
ability to increase metabolic rate. Without
smoke, food smells and tastes better
encouraging an increased intake. Do not smoke
as a means to lose weight as smoking is still
considered more hazardous to health than extra
weight. Drinking alcohol adds a lot of calories to
the diet and excessive drinking can stimulate
appetite. A lot of women gain weight during
pregnancy and find it very difficult to lose this
after the baby is born. This may greatly
contribute to the development of obesity and
with successive pregnancies, this usually
worsens. Certain medications such as antihypertensives,
corticosteroids, antipsychotic
drugs and tricyclic anti-depressants may lead to
weight gain as well. In rare instances, obesity
could be as a result of medical problems such as
Cushing’s syndrome, Hypothyroidism and
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Debilitating
conditions such as arthritis may lead to reduced
physical activity and hence weight gain.
Consult your doctor if you feel you are
overweight to determine if there is a need for
weight loss and to assess how much loss is
needed. Your doctor will calculate your BMI,
measure your waist circumference and review
your medical history. Smoking, drinking alcohol
or leading a stress filled life increases the risk of
health problems associated with obesity. The
potentially life threatening health problems
associated with obesity include hypertension,
type II diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke,
coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis, sleep
apnoea, gall bladder disease, fatty liver disease
and cancer (especially cancer of the breast,
uterus, cervix, ovaries, gallbladder, colon,
rectum and prostate). Obesity may also be
associated with gout. It is a relief to know that
losing modest amounts of weight can improve
blood pressure, reduce the risk of stroke and
cardiovascular disease, improve glucose control
in diabetics, lower the risk of cancer and
improve osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea.
The first goal in dealing with obesity is to
attain and maintain a healthier weight. This
should start by aiming to lose 5 to 10% of body
weight and to continue from there. The safest
12
/ December 16, 2018
way to lose weight and keep it off is in a slow
and steady manner. This can be achieved in
most cases by eating a healthier diet and
exercising more. Eat healthful foods, avoid
sugar, processed carbohydrates and excess fat.
Consuming fewer calories is important but crash
diets should be avoided as the drastic reduction
in calories and nutrients can lead to other health
problems. Very low calorie liquid diets such as
Medifast and Optifast are sometimes prescribed
as an intervention for seriously obese
individuals. These liquids provide about 800
calories a day (most adults consume 2,000 to
2,500 calories daily) and if not adhered to
weight is rapidly regained. Over the counter
Slim-Fast combined with vegetables, fruits and
a well balanced meal can help control caloric
intake.
It is advisable to drink plenty of water. Water
is probably the most important catalyst for
losing weight and keeping the extra weight off.
Water does this by naturally suppressing the
appetite and it helps the body metabolise fat. An
increase in water intake has been shown to
reduce fat deposits and vice-versa. When water
is not optimally consumed, the Kidneys cannot
function properly. As a result, some of their
workload is transferred to the Liver. This extra
load on the liver prevents the liver from fully
performing its primary function of metabolising
stored fat into usable energy for the body. As a
result, more fat is stored in the body and weight
is gained.
Prescription weight loss medications and
surgical intervention are offered to people with a
BMI greater than 30. Sibutramine (Meridia)
suppresses appetite by changing brain chemistry
to make the individual feel fullerquickly.
Orlistat (Xenical) inhibits the absorption of
fat in the intestine. Over the counter diet pills
include Garcinia, Chromium, Chitosan,
Ephedra, 5-HTP, St. John’s Wort and Herbal
Laxatives and Diuretics many of which have
serious side effects. Herbal laxatives and
diuretics cause water loss and not fat loss. This
practice is not safe and may lead to life
threatening complications. Surgical procedures
include stomach stapling, gastric bypass and
vertical banded gastroplasty. Gastric Balloons
have become quite popular as well. Note that
Liposuction is NOT a weight loss procedure.
One of the most painful aspects of obesity is
the emotional distress it may cause. Many
people equate beauty and success to slimness
and unfairly refer to obese individuals as
gluttonous or lazy. It is not uncommon to find
depression and shame in obese individuals. If
you are overweight or obese you must adapt a
positive attitude to enable you shed the
unwanted kilos. With the right attitude and a
good plan you can lose weight.
INTERVIEW
Yemisi Busari:
Putting Square Pegs In
Square Holes Will Fix Lagos
Armed a Masters degree in Law from the University of Lagos, and an
MBA from the Lagos Business School, she has traversed the corporate
world in the last 30 years especially in Honeywell Flour Mills where she
held sway as company Secretary and Legal Adviser. But recently, Mrs Yemisi
Busari, came from the background and took a big leap into the murky waters
of politics, emerging as the Deputy Governorship candidate of the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos. In this encounter, I met a cerebral woman
who is not only passionate about impacting people, but who seemed to have
figured out how Lagos can be fixed.
to do in Lagos state?
Being a woman, there are a couple of things that
naturally interest me. I am interested in children particularly,
the female children because, they are the future mothers,
wives, and they are the ones who nurture. So, I would be
interested in female education. Lagos is a commercial
centre. I am a firm believer of women being financially
independent. I will be interested in how our markets, so that
our women are able to stand on their own and support their
husbands.
Also, I will be interested in healthcare for women. A lot of
issues that should not take people’s lives in the 21st century
are killing women.
Your party the PDP has made two unsuccessful
attempts to come on board in Lagos state. What
would you do differently this time around to sell
yourself and party to Lagosian?
My coming into the race is something different that we
are adding, and we are going to attack issues that affect
the people; their pains and needs.
Growing up in Lagos, people did not use private hospitals.
We went to government hospital because that was where
we had consultant of 35 years. That was where even the
high and mighty went to. Now, our public hospitals are
death beds. So what are our plans for health? We intend
to bring a health management scheme where people
would have access to healthcare, where you don’t have to
be told to go and buy cotton wool, spirit, plaster, needles
and everything because you need to have a small incision.
Those are the things we need to do differently to ensure that
Lagos is once again liveable.
You seem to have things figured out but we all know
that the corporate world is significantly different from
the murky waters of politics. How prepared are you?
Everybody says the corporate world is different but I
beg to disagree. Wherever you have a gathering of people,
they will be people with different characters, personalities
and attitude. Politics is also a combination of people who
have come together to play. Maybe in the corporate world
you play more by the rules. But, the fact is that you are
dealing with people. I have worked in the last 30 years as
a negotiator, an influencer, and
a project manager. These are
the things that you require in
politics. Your ability to negotiate,
to influence will go a long way in
helping you achieve what you
want to achieve.
We have seen competent
female deputies who after
serving were not given the
opportunity to aspire higher.
Would you be comfortable if
you are not given the chance
to take your political career
to the next level?
Well, I have been invited to
serve as deputy governor but,
I am not sure it is automatic
that because you have been
the Deputy Governor, you
must be Governor. It is a
function of your passion and
where you see yourself. That
is something that we need to
consider.
Would you say that the
structure within your party
is gender friendly?
O yes, it is. I am not
aware that the party in any
way restricts women from
vying for any position that
they aspire to. I think it
is a function of individual
choices that determine
these things.
What gender specific
things would you want
Everyone is talking about change, how do you intend to
bring that change in government?
Well, there are a couple of things that can be done
better; basic things like transportation. We are all victims
of the traffic situation in Lagos; you can’t do two things in
Lagos anymore. We have to think out of the box, since we
can’t expand our road network. So we are going to make
sure that the water ways are functional. What will it cost us
to make sure that we put in place good ferries that move
people from one point to another?
You said your government will be gender friendly.
Would you assign women to key ministries or confine
them to woman affairs?
I think that this particular government intends to be
responsible. Don’t put round pegs in square holes or square
pegs in round holes. It is going to be a disaster.
So as a government, what we are going to do is to use
people who have skills in the particular area, people who
will achieve result, people who will help impact, and people
who will help build the Lagos that we are trying to build.
Now if these people are women and they have the skills,
they will be given opportunity, a fair playing field for
everybody.
We all know how difficult it is in politics to put square
pegs in square holes because of interests within the
party. How are you going to deal with that?
I totally agree with you. However, when there are
interest that needs to be looked at, the fact still remains
that in recognising those interests, we need to look at the
greater good. And I still insist on what I am saying; even
if within the political structure certain slots are given to
recognise the efforts of people, we can still say to them:
do you have people that have the requisite qualification to
do this job? Nigeria is a very blessed country and if I bring it
down to Lagos, Lagosians are very enlightened people and
are well read. In that space, we have a lot of skilled people.
So we will still seek for people with the requisite skills to
function in these positions.
What has your life in politics been like?
My life in politics has been interesting and exciting. I am
encouraged because I see a lot of opportunities and hope
for Lagos. I am really encouraged to be a part of achieving
that Lagos for everybody. The people’s Lagos.
In your interaction with people what have you learnt
about the human nature in this last six weeks?
I think that the average Lagosian is good at heart but
frustrated, and this frustration is born out of unfriendly
environment. I believe that if all of these issues are
addressed, and people are relaxed and happy, Lagos would
be the happiest place to live in.
What You Want In Bed This Christmas
Conversation about sex is important in getting
what you want in love making, quite a number
of married partners find this challenging as they
feel too shy to talk about what they want
sexually in bed. Having a sexual talk with your
partner not only increase closeness but it can
also improve you sex life, as you can
comfortably gist about the kind of sex you crave
for without fighting as getting exactly what you
desire in bed is pretty great.
Dr Martha Tara Lee, a clinical sexologist[DHS,
MA, BA] and founder of Eros Coaching says
that it’s not unusual for women to feel like they
may not be getting everything they need out of
their sex lives. Men, she says, have a tendency
to focus on the main erogenous zones at the
expense of the rest of the body because this is
what they think they should be doing from
society, pop culture, porn…you name it.
Dr Lee says no matter what the cause of your
dissatisfaction in the bedroom, it’s always okay
to ask for what you want: ‘’You’re you, and you
need to take care of you- what you need, want,
desire when it comes to sex. Don’t blame, don’t
shame, just take care of you, you bedroom
goddess!’’
Every human being has a different comfort level
when it comes to sex talk with their spouse, if
the intercourse is nothing to write home about,
you finding out what is missing can really be
fun. Though it may not funny at first, you be
able to have a conversation about your wants is
the right step on the journey to having a
pleasurable sex. Below are ways to let your
mate know your sexual desires.
First be sure of what you want in bed, Stefani
Threadgill, a sex therapist and sexologist, says
that if you want to communicate your needs,
you have to know what they are first. ‘’In order
to communicate what you want in bed, you
have to know what you want and what you
like’’, she says.
14
/ December 16, 2018
It is your duty to tell your spouse your sexual
likes and wants, don’t beat around the bush, let
him know what you specifically desire at each
moment. So if you want your love making to be
perfect, then you should be willing to tell your
spouse exactly what your likes are.
Try and connect outside the bedroom, if
partners don’t connect well outside the bedroom
then it will be difficult for love making to flow
well, as what goes on the outside matters just
as much if not more, than what goes on the
inside.
Before asking for what you want, you start with
encouraging your spouse on what they are
already doing, the best way to do this is to start
some compliments, then lead them in the right
direction of what you want. It will be better if you
show your partner what you want rather than
just talking, do not worry about ruining the
moment, tell him what to do, how to do it and
where you want it.
If there is problem in communicating your
desires face to face because you feel intense,
then try sexting as a lot of persons feel
comfortable expressing themselves in writing
than talking, leaving the sexy note where your
partner can easily find it or you can a racy text
during the day. Threadgill says this works for a
lot of women, because it’s less nerve-wracking:
‘’Sexting is less intimidating for some women,
so that can be a tool to communicate what you
want by sharing what you want to try with your
partner- a turn-on, a fantasy, or a past
experience with him that you want to have
again.’’
Once you have succeeded in opening up to
your partner and had been able to get across to
your spouse some things you may like, be it
verbally or otherwise, make sure you continue
to be openly rewarding of their support and
listening. Rewarding verbally is great but you
can use the opportunity to show your partner
how much you appreciated
that they heard you by doing
something nice for them in
bed.
If you aren’t totally fulfilled in
your sex life right now, it’s ok
to open a conversation about
what you want, says Dr Lee
but remember to be patient.
It’s not a lost cause either,
she continues: ‘’Humans are
teachable, and they need to
also have partners who are
patient, are willing to explain,
or show the way [nonverbally]
where needed.
You can always get help
when needed because
options are readily available,
if all fails then see a sex
therapist or sex coach.
