the
editor’s note
If you’re a parent of a model or a member of an editorial
team, you’ve probably seen kids become instant friends
on the set of a photo shoot. At first, when everyone arrives
they are timid and shy, no one knows each other and stays
close to their parents. But, by the end of the day, everyone
is hugging, laughing and acting as though they’ve known
each other for years! Why is it so easy for kids to make
friends?
While working in this industry, I’ve found it such a pleasant
surprise that we usually make friends wherever we go! We
all share a love of kids fashion that brings us together and
creates a meaningful connection. I’ve been so lucky to
have met many new friends around the world in the five
years we’ve had this platform. Colleagues have turned
into cherished friends, and the connections we’ve made
are invaluable.
We love the celebration of friendship seen throughout the
editorials in this issue! We see it in the Winter Vacation
editorial, as kids hit the slopes with their friends to enjoy
a day in the cold. We see it as girls become roller skating
queens and besties on the set of This Year’s Girl! Our cover
editorial, Girls From the Block, tells the story of friends
brought together by a shared love for their neighbourhood
and community.
Can’t wait to hear from you!
As the holiday season comes to an end and we look toward
the new year, I hope you’ll make a resolution to cherish
the friendships in your life. Not only by making time for
those friends who have become like family but by making
the most of every opportunity to make the meaningful
connections that bring us together in humanity.
designer Q&A
Tip Toey Joey
When inspiration struck in 2002, Ana and Scott McInerney
set to work, bringing to life a small, handmade shoe label
in their own living room. Now Tip Toey Joey is a globally
recognized brand, producing 32,000 pairs of shoes each
month! Get to know the brains behind this
brand in our Designer Q&A!
28
Ana and Scott McInerney always dreamt of owning
their own business. When inspiration struck after the
birth of their daughter, the family turned their living
room into an office and studio designing one of a
kind shoes for little feet. Today the São Paulo-based
brand has its own factory, a team of 380 employees
and produces 32,000 pairs of shoes each month!
We were thrilled to be able to interview the
designers after the launch of their new autumn/
winter collection which pays homage to the
wonderful world of cinema complete with nods
to your favourite genres - fiction, romance, and
adventure are seen throughout the collection.
What inspired the name of your label?
Back in 2002 when Sofia, our first daughter, was 6
months old we travelled to Queensland, Australia
as a family to stay 3 months with my parents. During
the trip, Sofia went from the sitting to crawling to
standing phases, and it was when she was standing
on her toes one day, balancing herself on my
parent’s sofa that the image stuck in my mind. Ana
had planted the seed of trying to make a baby shoe,
and that night I woke up with 3 words in my head
and wrote them down, Tip Toey and Joey. As Sofia
was our little baby and Joey is a baby kangaroo,
it just seemed to click with the moment. Tip Toey
Joey was born, our baby on her tippy toes.
What made you want to design for children?
It was really a wonderful combination of talents and
events coinciding at the right time. As a child, I had
a pair of footy boots in one hand and a pencil in the
other. I loved drawing birds and animals as a child,
then went on to cars & people as a teenager. Having

to make career choices at school I gave up art
classes for accounting and economics. A University
degree in Business followed and then analyst jobs
in Australia and London. It was only with the birth of
Sofia that art came back into my life. I set myself the
challenge of creating a functional shoe that allowed
her feet to grow naturally. And so I got the pad
and pencil out and started designing a beautiful,
comfortable and uniquely functional shoe. It was a
watershed moment as I was able to rediscover my
love of drawing and at the same time apply those
boring but essential business skills. So you can see
I fell into children’s design, or rather it lured me in.
And when you can create for your own child, the
satisfaction is truly unaccountable.
What is your brand’s mission statement or goal?
We love children’s feet and respect the natural
development of the child; we believe that footwear
can be deliciously comfortable, beautiful and
incredibly functional.
We believe that a shoe should not inhibit the natural
movement or growth of a child’s foot. A child grows
through different phases and so should the footwear
not only grow in size, it should grow in functionality
suitable to the characteristics of that phase. We
believe that the closer a shoe comes to simulating a
barefoot sensation the more natural a foot will grow.
We design and craft every shoe in our own factory
here in Franca, the interior of Sao Paulo, Brazil. I am
here, Ana is here, every day to make sure we are
crafting every shoe as we designed them and as we
made that first shoe for Sofia 15 years ago.

Designer Q&A
What are the motivations or inspirations behind
the designs? Firstly and foremost functionality reigns
supreme, it is what makes me tick, I find it hard to create
something that doesn’t have a functional purpose.
With functionality, I mean things actually work as they
were planned and have a benefit in their function. And
functionality is where we can really add value, from our
anatomic barefoot shape with a wide toe box, zero arch
support and minimal raised heel to our minimal raised
toe. We then add the basics of every Tip Toey Joey: a
stretch and stay elastic heel, soft & breathable leather
lining that wicks the teaspoon of sweat that babies
perspire every day, soft leather lining, elastic or velcro
closure. So we put incorporate all these features and
more into our timeless design all the while thinking that
it has to be deliciously comfortable. If we are going to
do it, let’s do it exceptionally well!
Is there a style decade you are inspired by?
I am a fan of all the decades and especially like the
present decade. I am proud of the consciousness that
is permeating through our every day, it is a wonderful
time to be ‘here now’! I love the access to the world.
For example, I think it is so cool to be able to listen to
Monocle 24, the fantastic UK based digital radio station
with incisive and inspiring interviews, in my car on the
way home from our factory in Franca, Brazil. In terms of
design, we try for the simple and timeless, we believe in
a slow fashion attitude; hence we created our Essentials
collection, it’s our timeless collection, our most timeless
models in timeless colours.
With this decade I do worry, even with this heightened
consciousness, that we have just too many things that
have no real purpose, just plain offering the same in a
different package. We are living exposed to excesses
of everything.
What makes your label stand out in the industry?
We are a children’s footwear brand that designs and
produces everything in our own factory, where we
appreciate and respect the specialized craft work that
is needed to produce a shoe of the highest quality.
How does your design philosophy change when
creating for boys vs. girls?
That is so interesting as it has been so fulfilling to have
two girls, I have been given a chance to really delve
deep into what makes them great and what makes them
different to boys. I find it incredibly natural and easy to
design for boys, but girls I have really had to learn! I
love the quote ‘people like design that likes people’, it
is so true it is pure design thinking, I had two wonderful
models to test on. I still test on Kiara and she is different
from Sofia, thinner and smaller. So we make our mary
jane shoes with a foam lining on the heel, this gives for
wider feet and yet embraces thinner feet. Across the
ball of the foot, we extend our velcro strap to cater for
the width differences also. In general, our female lasts
are thinner than our male lasts. Girls are also changing,
we have so many more sneakers for girls, some specific
and some unisex. I still have one more year with Kiara,
she fits our EUR 35 shoe – our shoes go up to EUR 36 –,
I am still studying!
What do you have coming up that you are really
excited about?
We are super excited to be working on some great
projects within the company from new products to
communication. Being in a growth phase where our
digital platforms are permitting us to engage with our
moms and dads, we see real potential to converse with
them, learning from them and fostering an environment
to spread our learning.
We will be opening our USA e-commerce site in 2019,
taking on the success of our Brazilian and Australian
e-commerce that have opened in the last 2 years. We
are developing a new family of footwear that will be
added to the collection mid-2019, it is my pet project,
it will incorporate everything I want our junior range to
offer for the future. And we have a brand new product
feature coming our with out spring/summer 2019
collection!
MANUELA
Visiting Grandma
by Ginny Bryzgalova
There’s nothing more charming
than Grandma’s house - the oneof-a-kind
knickknacks, the glow
of sunshine, the soft smell of
homemade cooking wafting from the
kitchen. Every trinket holds a secret
story yet to be discovered that only
Grandma herself can tell. In their latest
collection, Manuela’s kids design draw
on these uniquely magical charms to
create stunning pieces made of soft
cotton, velvet, and knitwear that feel
like a Grandma’s hug.
Founded in 2005 in Helsinki, Manuela
is a Hungarian-born brand that tells
a unique story with every collection.
The brand was founded on the notion
of “decorative minimalism,” blending
Scandinavian puritanism with Hungarian
decorative and colourful floral elements.
Manuela describes this mix as “East
European childhood dreams put into
the present with a utopian style.” This
balance between simplicity and fun
detail evokes feelings of childhood
innocence and adventure.
The aspect that makes Manuela
so unique is the brand’s exquisite
storytelling. Every collection tells a
captivating tale, most often originating
from Manuela’s childhood. Part of
the brand’s storytelling is expressed
through fabric patterns, which are

printed by hand using a silkscreen technique. By
using their own one-of-a-kind patterns, Manuela
adds a personal touch to each collection, giving
each piece of clothing a personality.
Manuela’s AW 2018/19 collection, “Visiting
Grandma,” is one of our favourites. The pieces’
warm fabrics, unique shapes, and deep hues give
the collection a fairytale quality. Manuela features
velvet skirts, jumpsuits, and chunky knitwear,
perfect for the chilly weather. The quality of the
pieces is outstanding, with fabrics made partly
in Hungary and organic components produced
in Portugal. Although inspired by an older
generation, the designs are far from outdated -
Manuela’s beautifully crafted patterns and colour
pairings make the collection timeless.
yourself, let alone keep up with all the season’s
top trends. Instead, you are probably filling up
your online cart during your lunch break or after
the kids have finally gone to sleep and crossing
your fingers something fits when it arrives. If
this sounds like you, Le Tote may be the perfect
option to simplify your wardrobe, rock all the
season’s best trends, and customize your closet
every month.
Do you need mostly workwear and just a few
casual pieces? Or, do you have three weddings
to attend in a single month? No problem!
_____________________
You have full control over what goes
in your tote. Shortly after taking
your style quiz and completing the
signup process you’ll be notified
that it is time to customize your
tote.
_____________________
You’ll then be able to see what Le Tote’s styling
technology has chosen for you based on your
quiz, and you’ll be able to swap those items out
for anything on the site.
We loved that Le Tote offers thousands of ontrend
and classic styles and has perfect options
for the workday, the weekend and everything
in between from well-known brands like Calvin
Klein, Vince Camuto, and French Connection!
We also enjoyed discovering new brands that
we wouldn’t have known about otherwise and
being able to test out new styles with zero
commitment!
you can keep anything from your
tote and get a great deal!
_____________________
After customizing your tote to exactly what you
want and need for the month ahead, in just
2-3 days your tote arrives by priority shipping!
A convenient pre-paid return shipping bag is
included to make it incredibly easy to send
anything you don’t want to purchase back once
you are finished with the tote.
For ladies who like to switch up their looks more
than once per month, Le Tote also offers a plan
to receive two totes per month.
For mommas-to-be, you don’t want to miss
Le Tote’s maternity tote full of amazing styles
for expectant mothers. You can rent gorgeous
