New Lenox Village Board
New stop sign added at
Stacy, Foxwood drives
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
The Village Board voted
unanimously to add an allway
stop sign at Stacy and
Foxwood drives at their Dec.
10 Village Board of Trustees
meeting.
Mayor Tim Baldermann
said that while sometimes
having too many stop signs
can often make matters
worse and cause carelessness
in drivers, he agreed with
the placement of this one for
public safety of the children.
“There’s a large volume of
kids walking to the campuses
Nelson Prairie School),” Will
Nash, Civil Engineer said.
Nash said that by next
week the stop sign will be in
place.
“We appreciate it every
time a community gets engaged,”
Baldermann said.
Baldermann said an overwhelming
majority of the residents
that live there signed a
petition and went through the
proper channels to get the
stop sign put in place.
“They are the ones who
know that better than anyone,”
Trustee David Smith
said.
Citizens from the subdivision
in attendance of the
The D210 Board of Education
held a brief board
meeting at Lincoln-Way
East Thursday, Dec. 13, followed
by a special strategic
planning meeting afterwards.
In 2016, the board received
16 recommendations
for improvement an auditor’s
management letter as
part of the district’s annual
audit. Now, the board only
has two remaining recommendations
to address, and
they made a step forward
in addressing one of them.
The board unanimously approved
to start the process
of developing a comprehensive
accounting procedures
manual, which is the more
time intensive of the two
left to complete.
The remaining recommendation
is to establish
written policies and
procedures for the maintenance
of a capital assets inventory.
The board also unanimously
voted on going into
an agreement with Forecast
5 Analytics for 5 Lab, where
information housed in Skyward,
College Board and
other programs available
online via the district’s and
meeting asked about the
second stop sign at Brett Dr.
That they requested, which is
another major crossing intersection.
Mayor Baldermann
said that Nash will bring
more information before the
board for the agenda at the
next meeting.
“If its something that we
feel we should do, that’s what
we will do,” Baldermann
said. “We hire the professionals,
their advice comes from
experience.”
Baldermann also noted
that after the stop sign is put
up, there will be an increased
police presence to enforce it.
each school’s websites to
students and parents could
be to put into one platform.
The district agreed to pay
$13,000 for the remainder
of this year and $26,000 annually
for the services.
The board also discussed
transportation contracts
and is scheduled to approve
those in January for the five
out of six feeder districts
that the district provides
transportation for.
“First thing we want to
do is implement staggered
renewal time to reduce risk
to the district,” Assistant
Superintendent of Business
Addressing mental health close to home
Silver Oaks
Behavioral Hospital
to open soon
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
“More than 1,000 residents
of Illinois die each
year from suicide. For every
completed adolescent suicide
there are an estimated
100 to 200 attempts.”
That is just a snapshot of
the current mental health crisis
facing the state of Illinois,
according to Scott Hullinger,
CEO of Silver Oaks Behavioral
Hospital. Hullinger
spoke at the Thursday, Dec.
13 ribbon cutting ceremony
to unveil the new facility.
The Will County Community
Needs Assessment
conducted in 2016 singled
President and CEO of US HealthVest Richard Kresch (middle) poses for a picture before
cutting the ribbon Thursday, Dec. 13, during Silver Oaks’ ribbon cutting ceremony.
Megan Schuller/22nd Century Media
out mental health as an area
that was lacking in resources
and available beds, especially
after many state facilities
like the Tinley Park Mental
Health Center nearby closed
in 2012.
After assessing the needs
of the community, Silver
Oaks will offer in patient, day
hospital and intensive outpatient
programs. What sets the
facility apart is the 24/7 free
mental health assessments,
and its mental health care
provided for all ages.
“Not only will this hospital
be a place for those in
mental health crisis but our
specialized programs have
been designed specifically
for this community,” Hullinger
said.
The 100-bed facility will
generate more than 200 jobs,
reduce barriers, like travel
and insurance that often hinder
access to mental health,
and localize treatment for local
residents.
Silver Oaks will provide
treatment for a full range of
mental health disorders and,
according to the CEO of Silver
Cross partner HealthVest
Dr. Richard Kresch, a patient
in need of care will never be
turned away for an inability
to pay.
Former Chicago Bears
quarterback Jim McMahon
was the keynote speaker at
the ceremony to address his
struggles with depression
and addiction following his
career in the NFL.
“Mental health has been a
big issue not only here but all
over the country,” McMahon
said. “A lot of my colleagues
in the sports field are dealing
with mental health issues.”
McMahon described his
depression as living in a
vegetable-like state most of
the time.
“I was laying down in a
dark room for weeks at a
time, I couldn’t really function,”
McMahon said. “I had
terrible thoughts, and had I
had a gun, I wouldn’t be here
today. It got so bad to a point
I just checked out.”
McMahon said from personal
experience it’s easy to
be too proud to admit physical
or mental pain, and to
self-medicate as a temporary
solution, but it has long-term
consequences.
“I’ve had three different
teammates commit suicide,
and I don’t want to want to
see anymore,” McMahon
said. “We now have a beautiful
facility for people in
this area to get treatment. If
you go home and see your
friends or family start to
struggle, talk to them about
getting help.”
Mayor Tim Baldermann
spoke at the event about
New Lenox’s dedication to
mental health. The land that
Silver Oaks now sits on was
once vacant land slated to be
more than 2 million squarefeet
of retail.
“The truth is, some people
would be reluctant to say
that there are mental health
problems in their community,
that there are drug addictions
in their community,”
Baldermann said. “I will
tell you that’s a fact of life
no matter where you live.
In this community we are
proud to say that we tackled
those issues head on. We
don’t bury them.”
Baldermann ended his
speech saying that as long
as he is mayor, the Village of
New Lenox will continue to
address the issue of mental
health.
Silver Oaks is slated to be
open to patients in January.

Shop with a Cop event delivers cheer to NL children
Rochelle McAuliffe
Freelance Reporter
Every child deserves to
have a merry Christmas, but
due to financial struggle, a
happy holiday may not be
attainable for some families.
To help the days be brighter
and deliver some Christmas
cheer, the New Lenox
Police Department partnered
with Morning Star Mission
to give local kids a shopping
spree at the New Lenox
Walmart. Through referrals
from schools and social service
agencies in the community,
more than 50 children
ages 6 to 13 years old had
the opportunity to shop with
a New Lenox cop on Dec. 8.
“This is a need that’s been
identified in the community
that some of these kids don’t
have the same opportunity
around the holidays,” said Eloise
Crabb, chief operating officer
at Morning Star Mission.
“Through [the mission] and
with the help of contributions
from officers, we’re able to
give these kids some holiday
cheer in the form of a Walmart
gift card so they can buy some
gifts and spread that cheer to
their friends and family.”
Before the group even
got to Walmart, the fanfare
began with NLPD escorting
the group’s busses in a
parade down Lincoln Highway
to the storefront, complete
with lights and sirens.
As soon as the group began
shopping, the joy of the moment
filled the store isles in
the way of grins and giggles.
“It’s neat to see the kids
shop for each other with
all of the consideration
and spirit they have,” said
Deputy Chief Louis Alessandrini.
“It’s a great time
to get together with the kids,
have some fun doing some
shopping, and then we have
a pizza party afterward. You
couldn’t ask for a better day
with the community.”
Spending the morning
shopping with Alessandrini
was Brandon Pabon, who
was participating in the
event for his second year. As
Alessandrini helped Pabon
find the perfect clothes to
give to his siblings, the two
engaged in conversation and
developed a deeper bond.
“It’s just a really good
time. We get to get out and
meet other kids, then hang
out with cops. It really paints
them in a different light,”
Pabon said.
Detective Jeff Lindeman
looks forward to the shopping
event each year, with
this year being his fifth time
participating. For Lindeman,
the opportunity to bond with
children in the community,
while making their holiday
season brighter is one of his
favorite parts of the job.
“I like being able to go
around and make Christmas
a little better for these
kids,” Lindeman said. “I had
a great group of kids in the
past who used part of their
gift card to buy me a shirt.
The joy goes both ways. The
kids brighten my day, too.”
Abigail Lindeman, daughter
of Lindeman, has been
participating in this event for
the past four years alongside
her father. Not only are the
father-daughter duo able to
spend quality time with each
other at the holidays, but
they’re excited to use that
time together to help better
their community.
“I think it’s a confidence
booster to have the opportunity
to give gifts to others,
and it helps them to empowers
themselves,” Abigail
said. “I think that empowerment
can keep building
to where they’re inspired
to do good in their community
because they knew how
it made them feel to have
someone reach out to them.”
Man charged for thefts in Walmart parking lot
James Sanchez, Editor
A Country
man was arrested
Thursday,
Dec.
ongoing investigation
of Humphrey
two cellphone
ruses at the New Lenox
Walmart’s parking lot, according
to a press release
from the New Lenox Police
Department.
Michael Humphrey, 23,
of 18053 Idlewild Drive in
Country Club Hills, was
charged with felony theft by
deception. He was reportedly
a suspect in two previous
incidents in late November
and December when he
pretended to sell a phone
through a mobile app and
all those invited for the
stole money from the buyer
during the exchange at
Walmart. Police reportedly
arrested Humphrey Dec. 13
during an arranged meeting
at Walmart after agreeing
to purchase an iPhone from
him through the 5Miles mobile
app. Police said Humphrey
arrived in a tan Ford
Fusion, which was the vehicle
described by the victims
in the previous incidents,
gave the undercover officer
a bag containing an empty
iPhone box and took $350.
He was then apprehended
and taken to the New Lenox
Police Department.
The investigation started
after an incident on Nov.
26 when a buyer agreed to
purchase an iPhone through
the OfferUp mobile app
for $125. During the meeting
at Walmart, Humphrey
strategic planning meeting
broke in to groups to discuss
finance, public relations,
human resources, and
the buildings and grounds
of the district. Each group,
led by a district employee
who specializes in that particular
area, discussed the
goals set two years ago,
at Walmart.
Police added Humphrey
was previously arrested
Police: Progress being made
in burglary cases
Mokena Police Chief
Steve Vaccaro updated the
Board of Trustees Dec. 10,
on the actions the police department
is taking in light of
a recent string of burglaries
to both residences and businesses.
Recently, the Village has
been beset by four “smashand-grab”
burglaries.
In regard to the burglaries
at the businesses, Vaccaro
said progress has been
made.
“In cooperation with other
police departments, we
www.edwardjones.com have identified the subjects
Member SIPC
who are responsible for two
of the smash-and-grabs, and
we have the identities of the
other two,” he said. “We’ve
made some great strides in
the business smash-andgrabs.”
The police department
also has been able to make
some strides regarding the
four residential burglaries.
“In each case, the residence
was unoccupied, and
entry was made through
either a front door or a rear
door,” Vaccaro said. “I think
it is very important to emphasize
that nobody was
home when the burglaries
occurred. Generally, the last
thing that a burglar wants to
do is encounter a resident.”
The incidents occurred
between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
In each burglary, either jewelry
or cash was taken.
“This is a very, very high
priority for the police department,”
Vaccaro said.
“We take pride in safety
and security, and so this is a
major priority to stop these
residential burglaries and
identify those responsible.
We’ve shifted our resources
to dedicate our focus on resolution
[of this].”
Online/mobile transaction safety
James Sanchez, Editor
I’m always about finding the
right deals. And if it means using
Craigslist, Facebook or any
mobile buyer/seller apps to get the
deal you want, so be it.
But with these transactions
brings the possibility of scams
and thefts, like what has happened
this month and last month. Last
week, New Lenox police arrested
a Country Club Hills man who
targeted these buyers in a small
string of deceptive thefts (See
Page 7). What the man did was he
pretended to sell a phone through
a mobile phone app, like OfferUp
or 5Miles, and would arrange the
buyer to meet at the New Lenox
Walmart. He would then provide
the buyer with an empty phone
box, and take the money and flee.
Not many people know that the
New Lenox Police Department
has a designated area for buyers
and sellers to make a safe exchange.
It’s located at the northeast
side of the building, located
at 200 Veterans Parkway, and
it’s under 24-hour surveillance.
These types of scams would all
be avoided if these buyers used
this. Also, if a police department
doesn’t have a designated area, the
meeting could be made inside the
police department’s lobby during
open hours.
I would always be firm with the
buyer or seller on meeting at the
police department. It would just
give me peace of mind. And obviously
if the other end doesn’t want
to meet at the police station, you
would know something’s fishy.
Safety should be the top priority
when doing these transactions.
Always keep your stance on where
you want to meet.
Letter to the Editor
Kneeling Santa
Two of my favorite holiday decorations are a
banner and a statue of Santa kneeling by a manger
of the Baby Jesus. It makes me believe even
Santa knew “The Reason for the Season.” With
all of the ads for material items whether they were
for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, or the rush to
get the right gift for members of your family or
friends, I hope everyone remembers why we have
a celebration of Christmas. The things I remember
most when I was a child were the Christmas
programs at church and school, the enjoyment of
gatherings of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins
and friends with my parents.
Also, I reminisce about the wonderful holiday
meals that my Mother would prepare. Of course,
that one special present under the tree brought
me joy, the one that was next to the manger. I
still have my sled of more than 60 years, which I
decorated and placed by my front door. That one
present brought hours of enjoyment as I sledded
down the hill in our back yard at the first sight of
snowflakes hitting the ground. Today, many children
receive an abundance of toys and some may
never see the inside of a church for a true Christmas
program. Enjoy the holiday season, but
please remember to keep the Christ in Christmas.
Local musician releases rock ‘n’ roll album
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
For Dave Bellah, 54, of
New Lenox, music isn’t just
his passion. It is the force
that moves him forward.
“For me, music is every
bit as crucial as breathing,
blood, water — it’s that important
to me,” Bellah said.
Now, Bellah can add another
chapter into the story
of his life with music, as the
local rocker has released his
first album of original music,
titled “Think Outside The
Burning Box.”
It’s a record that has been
beating a drum inside of his
head for decades.
All about music
Music has always been a
part of Bellah’s life. At age
4, he started singing. At 14,
he picked up a guitar.
“It’s just like everybody:
In high school, you feel a
little bit out of sorts,” he
said. “You’re growing and
learning about yourself.
Picking up an instrument really
helped me kind of find
myself.”
What he found in that discovery
of self through music
– among other things – was
an appreciation for all types
and sounds of music.
“I love everything,” Bellah
said. “I listen to everything,
from classical to
heavy metal to blues, jazz,
instrumental … it’s always
been a big part of who I am
as a musician is the versatility.
I feel just as comfortable
doing an Elvis tune as I do
singing Stone Temple Pilots
or Bad Company.”
A long time coming
After playing in bands
throughout high school, Bellah
began to hit his stride
in adulthood – playing solo
or with groups all over the
place. Currently, he also
sings for the band 8-Track,
which covers rock songs
from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.
“If you like going to a
real rock ‘n’ roll experience
show, come see this band,”
Bellah said. “It’s a real fun,
upbeat show.”
Along the way, Bellah has
played Sammy Hagar’s club
in Cabo San Lucas to bars in
the southwest suburbs. He’s
been in some bands that
have been opener for musical
acts such as Heart, The
Smithereens, Soul Asylum
and Foghat.
“It’s been quite a journey,”
Bellah said.
But there is one arena in
music that Bellah still hadn’t
entered into previously – releasing
a record of original
material. He said he had
wanted to create his own album
for 20 years.
Recently, with his children
getting older and Bellah being
in a good place financially,
everything started
falling into place. So, he hit
the studio.
“I spent 150 hours in the
studio creating this CD,” he
said.
While most records focus
in on a specific genre, Bellah
said his album is eclectic.
“The CD takes people on
a journey, where you don’t
know what’s going to come
up from Song 1 to Song 2 to
Song 3 or Song 4,” Bellah
said. “It’s all over the map.”
The album title is “Think
Outside The Burning Box” –
an idea, complete with plans
for the cover art, he said he
came up with in his 20s.
“What that essentially
means is don’t pigeonhole
yourself into one particular
genre,” he said of the album
title. “Be open and listen to
everything else. With me,
not only think outside the
box but completely destroy
the box. Don’t even have a
box in the first place.”
For the music, Bellah said
he performed all the vocal
harmonies and guitar work.
“The CD — front to back
— is my baby,” he said.
“This is by far the most gratifying
and huge moment for
me, musically, far and away.
I can only liken it to the birth
of a child, because you’re
creating things.”
Bellah pointed to three
tracks on the record that
would give listeners a window
into who he is as a
musician. And just like the
record, it starts with the album’s
opening song, “Heart
in Chains.”
“It’s kind of like if AC/
DC did a pop song,” Bellah
described. “It showcases the
harmonies I can bring to the
table. It is rocking, but it’s
not over the top.”
On Track 3, titled “Running
Out of Love,” Bellah
found inspiration from
bands he’s loved.
“It would be like if Paul
Rodgers, the singer of Bad
Company, joined the Eagles,”
Bellah said of the
song. “He’s always been
my biggest vocal influence.
It starts off kind of acoustically,
almost like ‘Feel Like
Making Love’ by Bad Company
or ‘Shooting Star.’ But
it slowly starts to get into
more of the rock [sound] as
it goes along. It builds.”
Then, there is Track 8,
titled, “Madame Soul.” Bellah
described it as the “hardrocker”
of the bunch.
“It is over the top,” he
said. “It’s this really rocking
song.”
The ‘ultimate rush’
For Bellah, the experience
has been intensely gratifying
in putting together the
record – and it has added
another facet to his lifelong
New Lenox resident Dave Bellah recently released his first album, “Think Outside The
Burning Box.” Photos Submitted
Dave Bellah also sings for the band 8-Track, which covers rock songs from the ’70s, ’80s
and ’90s.
slow dance with music.
“I don’t drink or do drugs
— nothing,” Bellah said.
“Rock ‘n’ roll is my addiction.
“It’s who and what I am,
right down to the core of
my being. Nothing is better
than being out performing
live in front of people, having
a great time and getting
into the show — dancing,
screaming and going nuts. It
is the ultimate rush.”
“Think Outside The Burning
Box” is currently available
on Apple Music, Spotify
and can be purchased online.
All About Music students
celebrated the happiest season
of all during its annual
“Caroling for Critters” recital
Dec. 8, at St. John’s
United Church of Christ in
Mokena. This year the event
was to benefit the local nokill
animal shelter NAWS.
NAWS volunteers opened
each of the three recitals
showcasing three of its
adoptable dogs and two cats.
“The dogs are so cute.
I love being able to sing
to them,” Maddy Farias,
9-year-old Orland Park resident,
said. Farias sang, “Rudolph
the Red Nosed Reindeer,”
for the recital and had
the crowd dancing in their
seats.
The students had the opportunity
to pet and play
with the dogs after their performance.
Each of the three pups
were recently rescued.
NAWS volunteer Angela
Vivacqua said that most of
the animals at the shelter are
rescued from dangerous and
violent situations. The staff
has even rescued animals
outside of Illinois on more
than one occasion.
NAWS doubles as a clinic
with veterinary staff performing
simple procedures,
such as neutering/spaying
and microchip insertion.
Mylo, a 3-year-old Corgi
mix, was rescued from a
southern state and was a
crowd favorite because she
snuggled right up to each
person who visited her.
“We are huge dog lovers
so we are loving having
NAWS here today,” Todd
Beebe, All About Music guitar
lessons teacher, said.
Beebe and his wife, Connie
Beebe, have been with
All About Music since it
Edie Balester, 14, of New Lenox, closes the first recital with
“Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow” Dec. 8 during All
About Music’s annual Caroling for Critters” concert at St.
John’s United Church of Christ in Mokena.
Analisa Trofimuk/22nd Century Media
started more than 25 years
ago. Connie Beebe’s mother,
Carol Johnson, started
the Mokena music school
in 1992, at which time the
school offered group and
private lessons. Since then,
All About Music has grown
and serves students at any
age. Todd Beebe said their
youngest student is 7 and
their oldest is 75. Younger
students also have the option
to participate in the musicals
the school has three times a
year.
The Caroling for Critters
recital has been a longtime
tradition for the school and
is done in partnership with
different animal-focused organizations
every year. This
year, the recital featured
about 50 child musicians
from Mokena and the surrounding
communities.
Todd Beebe said one of
the best parts of his work at
All About Music is seeing
students grow as musicians
and then proceed to recruit
family and friends to take
private lessons as well.
New Lenox residents Audrey
and Edie Balester performed
Saturday. Audrey
Balester, 15, played a guitar
arrangement of, “Jolly Old
St. Nicholas,” and her sister
Edie, 14, sang, “Let it Snow,
Let it Snow, Let it Snow.”
The sisters participate in
music activities outside of
school, including chorus,
guitar lessons and theater.
They participate in private
lessons and the musicals at
All About Music.
“I think performing is really
rewarding and I also just
love doing it,” Edie said.
Audrey said she especially
enjoys the NAWS event because
she loves having the
opportunity to help the animals.
For more information on
adopting a rescue animal or
donating to NAWS, visit its
website at nawsus.org.
All About Music is currently
accepting applications
for lesson teachers and will
also be hosting auditions for
their spring musical, “Mary
Poppins.” For more information,
Lincoln-Way Central celebrates
49 years of Madrigal magic
Rochelle McAuliffe
Freelance Reporter
Forty-nine years of excellence.
Forty-nine years of
tradition.
Since 1970, the Lincoln-
Way community has celebrated
the season with the
sound of music – performed
by none other than their own
Lincoln-Way Central Madrigal
Singers. During the
weekend of Dec. 6-8, the
group once again enchanted
the community with their
49th Annual Madrigal Dinner.
Singing music from centuries
long ago, as well as
contemporary holiday carols,
the annual madrigal
performance and dinner invited
families, friends and
members of the community
to celebrate the efforts of the
students who comprise the
longest running madrigal
group in the state.
“This program has almost
become word-of-mouth,”
said choral director Mike
Bultman. “If you’re a singer
at LWC, this is one of
the things you aspire to. If
you’re a part of the community,
you want to be there.”
“It’s the starting point of
the holiday season for me.
It’s lovely to hear all the
Christmas carols,” said Helen
Zajac, the proud grandmother
of Maggie Zajac,
adding that Maggie sings
“beautifully.”
As guests first entered the
Lincoln-Way Central Fine
Arts Hall, they were immediately
greeted to the lovely
sounds of three instrumental
ensembles in the foyer outside
the auditorium. When it
was time to enter the “banquet
hall” on stage, a guitar
ensemble gently played
through in the “castle” as
guests were transported
into the medieval world that
Lincoln-Way Central Madrigals (left to right) Emily Lange,
senior; Brooke Rush, sophomore; Bridget Gaier, senior;
Sammi Boyle, senior; and Kamryn Samoska, senior, greet
guests Dec. 8 with their music from their brass ensemble.
Rochelle McAuliffe/22nd Century Media
awaited them.
Throughout the evening,
guests would be entertained
by a show that included
a jester, the king and the
queen, as well as the lovely
sound of the madrigal
choirs woven into the script.
As they watched the performance
onstage, guests were
able to feast on roast beef,
chicken, potatoes, green
beans, rolls, hot cider, coffee
and bread pudding, prepared
by the LWC cafeteria
staff.
Tommy Mountford is no
stranger to Madrigal performances.
With two sisters
who performed with the
group and now a brother who
is a member of the Madrigals,
the dinner performances
around the holidays are
something familiar, but still
special. On Saturday evening,
he attended the event
with girlfriend Amanda Kies
to show their support.
While the bread pudding
is a huge draw for Mountford,
he loves seeing his
brother James perform with
his family away from home
in the LWC music department.
“With my brother, it was
hard for him to find a place
at first where he fit in, but
band and choir has made
him feel at home,” Mountford
said. “The directors are
key in that.”
“We’re a musical family
and an emotional family, and
we’re able to create something
that none of us could
have done on our own,”
Bultman said.
In the hallway that leads
to the stage, the coat of arms
hanging in the hallway is
decorated by past students.
On the stage, the original
Yule log from the first Madrigals
performance, complete
with 49 years of candle
wax drippings.
“It’s very moving because
I’m still close with
[Charles Stark], the director
who started the Madrigals
in 1970. I know all the
heart and soul he put into
this program,” said Stacey
Williams-Jackson, music
chair at LWC. “When I look
at the sets and scenery from
years past, the original Yule
log, all the students as they
come onstage and to hear the
songs they’ve sung for the
last 49 years, it really means
a lot to me.
“Not just me, but the community,”
she said.

Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Abby Nolan
Abby Nolan is a freshman
on the Lincoln-Way Central
bowling team.
How did you get into
bowling?
When I was younger, my
brother did it so I always
watched him and as he got
older he got better so I always
strived to be the best
that he can be. I always
looked up to him.
DON’T BE A
What’s the biggest
lesson you’ve learned
from the sport?
To not get frustrated so
easily.
Do you have a pregame
routine or superstitions?
Always remember to focus
and hit your mark and
follow through. Remember
all that and try to perform.
It’s not always easy but try
your best to do that.
Who do you have a
friendly competition
with on the team?
I have a friendly competition
with Maddie Conroy.
She’s a senior and her and I
get along really well. It’s a
“love-compete” relationship.
What’s your greatest
bowling memory?
Our first tournament, in
the morning we all shot phenomenal,
and we were so
happy. We bowled so well.
What’s your dream goal
in bowling?
My dream goal is to bowl
a perfect game. It hasn’t
happened yet, but it’s what
I strive for. My closest to a
perfect game was a 253.
If you weren’t bowling,
what would you do?
I used to do gymnastics,
so I would have continued
with that.
If you won the lottery
what would be the first
thing you’d buy?
A Range Rover.
If could be lead role in a
movie, who would you
Photo Submitted
want to be?
Princess Leia in “Star
Wars.”
What’s the biggest
challenge you’ve
overcome?
My attitude in bowling. It
was a lot to overcome. I used
to get so down on myself
and had to get a better attitude.
My teammates help a
lot and keep motivated and
up. My parents and brother
all keep me up to not get
down on myself.
Girls Bowling
East, West battle it out in last game for LW Cup
JV tournament also
brings exciting finish
in Warriors’ favor
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
Just like the boys’ side of
things, the girl’s portion of
the Lincoln-Way Cup had
an exciting ending an on
Saturday, Dec. 15, at Laraway
Lanes in New Lenox.
While the varsity side
was close, that excitement
was upstaged by the junior
varsity tournament. That’s
because the JV competition
had to be decided in a
playoff, which was nearly a
three-way playoff.
After six games The Lincoln-Way
East and West
girls teams were tied at
4,263 pins apiece. Amazingly
Lincoln-Way Central
was just 10 pins behind at
4,253.
So after a bit of discussion
on the rules of a tie,
there was a 2-frame tiebreaker.
The frames were
bowled as if they were the
ninth and 10th frames. So
three balls could be rolled
in the final frame.
With all the other bowlers,
both boys and girls, still
there loudly cheering them
on it naturally came down
to the final bowler. That’s
where West sophomore
Hailee Hospodar had to get
a good count. She was able
to tap-out a 2-pin spare and
then add to the total on the
final shot as the Warriors
won the JV tournament.
East’s Sara Tripi (978) was
the top JV individual.
On the varsity side, the
Warriors weren’t as fortunate.
Heading into the final
game the score was tied. It
was an up-and-coming East
squad, however, that pulled
away and won the varsity
cup 5,348-5,298. It was the
second straight season the
Griffins have won it. Central
(5,001) was third but
had the girls high-game of
the day with a 984.
“We’ve been right in the
850-to-950 range,” said
third-year East coach Carlie
Premo of her team this
season. “We’ve only lost
one dual meet (to Andrew
on Dec. 11 by the score of
1,855 -1,849) and have a
6-1 record overall. Overall
we’ve been bowling better.
“To win this two years in
a row definitely shows that
we’re a team to contend
with. I only lost one senior
from last year and it’s nice
to see that same momentum
carry over.”
Angie Juskie (1,217 series)
led East with a second
place overall finish. Fellow
senior Sydney Tyler (1,156,
3rd overall).and sophomore
Kaitlyn Marks (1,069, 5th
overall) followed. Morgan
Tripi (962) and Kately Adamitis
(944) rounded out the
Griffin scoring.
“It was really stressful,
but it felt amazing,” Juskie
said of helping the Griffins
to the repeat. “We were tied
heading into the last game
and I bowled a 204. I just
stayed in the moment and
not get too excited. We just
all picked each other up and
it’s amazing that we won the
title again. We just synced
with our chemistry.”
While the Warrior varsity
couldn’t pull out the final
game, they still had the individual
champion in junior
Kenzie Ullian (1,314), who
also had the girl’s highgame
of the day with a 244.
“Yes, that was my goal to
come back and win it,” said
Ullian, who lost to Juskie
by 39 pins for the individual
title last season. “It
was nice to come back and
I was ready. But my goal is
definitely to make it back to
state.”
Her dad, Scott Ullian,
coached the West boys to
11th place in the state last
season. This season he
moved over to coach the
girl’s program, which also
went to state and placed
11th last year.
“All of these Lincoln-
Way teams are really even
and we’ve all had our runs,”
Scott Ullian said. “We’re
getting the girls ready to
make another state run and
we hope to get back there.
“For our JV team to win
was pretty cool. Two of the
girls in the team were ones
that I just brought up for
the tournament. So to have
them there and the team do
it was pretty neat.”
Olivia Daujatas (1,066),
Lizzy Prynn (1,056), Hannah
Hospodar (896), Megan
Kukulka (524), and Leah
Zack (442) filled out the
Warrior lineup.
For Central, senior Kalei
Bass bounced back from a
knee injury from earlier in
the season to return to the
lineup and bowl a 1,125
series, which was tops on
the team and fourth overall.
Maddie Conroy (992),
Abby Nolan (989), Lauren
Davern (963), Kate Marszalek
(932), and Jessica Sumrow
(101) made up the rest
of the Knight lineup.
“We’re much improved
and were 4-1 going into this
with a second and a third in
a couple of tournaments,”
Central coach Steve Paulsen
said. “I’ve been really happy
with how we’ve done.
“This is the closest it’s
been since we’ve had the
cup. With all of us being
within 10 pins [on the JV
level] it shows the parity in
this district.”
BOWLING
From Page 31
DJ needed to strike on his
first two balls and then get
at least a pin for us to win.
That’s what he did. He was
able to block it out step up.
That’s why he’s our anchor.
“It means a lot to these
guys to win it. We’ve been
tracking the mental side of
things.”
For Armbrecht, who rolled
a fourth best 1,248 series and
had the high game of the day
with a 279, it was a matter of
confidence.
“I knew I had to get two
strikes and at least a pin and
that’s what you have to do
out of the anchor position,”
he said. “I wasn’t nervous.
The guys from West were
more nervous than me. I
stepped up and buried my
first two in the pocket.”
West had some steady
scores but just fell short
at the end. Senior Michael
Nork (1,268) was second
overall while Cameron
Jablonski (1,242) was fifth
overall. Tony Paul (1,075),
while Jeremy Sgarlata (884),
Naythan McNally (751),
and Glenn Prynn (657 in 3
games for a 219 high average)
for the Warriors.
“We had lost the lead at
lunch but then got it back in
the fifth game,” West coach
Scott Jablonski said. “Then
we fell a little bit short and
felt a little stressed. East
came back and put on the
pressure and beat us. Hats
off to them.”
While he couldn’t help
Central repeat as a team cup
winner, Nolan repeated as
the individual one. Nolan
bowled a 6-game total of
1,383 last season.
“I wanted to do it again,”
Nolan said. “I’m glad to
take first and end up on top.
These type of tournaments
will help us upcoming in the
conference and postseason.”
Austin Zaker (1,164), Tyler
Misch (1,110), Tommy
Martini (1,106), and Ryan
Gamen (1,091) rounded out
the scores for the Knights.
“We came out flat and
made too many mistakes,”
Central coach Coley
O’Connell said. “Alex won
it, but there were even times
when he struggled. But we
play the whole season to get
ready for the regionals and
that’s what we will be.”
On the JV side, Central
(5,467) won it behind individual
champion Jack Mc-
Cabe (1,134). West (5,395)
placed second and East
(5,033) was third. West senior Mike Nork finished second overall. 22nd Century Media file photo

Celtics’ difficult schedule continues in loss to DePaul Prep
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
As the late, great Tom Petty
once sang, “I Won't Back
Down.”
That could be the theme
song of this season’s Providence
boys basketball team.
The Celtics aren't backing
down from any competition
this season. They only have
a handful of seniors but are
still scheduling tough teams
like they did last week.
That showed when Providence
hosted a Top 10
team in the Chicago area
in DePaul Prep. The Rams
showed why they entered
the game undefeated and are
a top team as they used a suffocating
defense and went
onto a 56-25 victory over
Providence on Friday, Dec.
14, in New Lenox.
It was only the second
time the Celtics (3-6) have
lost a game by double digits
this season. DePaul Prep
(8-1), which is coached by
Tom Kleinschmidt, a former
alumni when the high school
was named Gordon Tech
and All-American at De-
Paul University, lost for the
first time this season 54-50
to Benet Academy the next
day.
“They're loaded and wellcoached,”
Providence coach
Kyle Murphy said of the
Rams. “That's a Class 3A
state title contender. But if
you look at our record it's
tough. In the next month,
we don't play a team with a
losing record. We don't back
down from anyone.”
Adam Taylor led the Celtics
with 10 points. Fellow senior
forward Jake Mazrimas
(6 points) and senior guard
Matt DiNardi led Providence
with six rebounds.
“They're a very tough,”
said Taylor, a Mokena resident,
of the Rams. “We
battled, We're back to square
one but we will be alright.
We just came up short. If
we're scared, we should just
go home.”
Senior forward Pavie Pantovic
(11 points, 9 rebounds)
led DePaul Prep. Senior
guard Perry Cowan, Jr.,
sophomore forward Brian
Mathews and junior guard
Lance Mosley all added 8
points apiece for the Rams,
who had nine different players
score.
DePaul Prep led 12-0
before junior center Lucas
Porto scored from inside
with 1:10 left in the opening
quarter to get the Celtics on
the board. But the Rams led
16-2 after a quarter and 31-8
at halftime.
Mazrimas scored four
points in a 7-0 run in the
third quarter which brought
Providence back within 33-
15 midway through the third
quarter. It was 35-17 after
three and never got closer.
“This was Jake's first game
back starting,” Murphy said
of Mazrimas. “He's coming
off a broken ankle. But we
will count on him and it's
nice to have him back. We
played good defense at times
but [the Rams] are just very
good.
“Still the strength of our
team is the team. We don't
have just one guy we count
on. We are very unselfish
and share the ball.”
Taylor agreed.
“We have good leaders in
Matt DiNardi and [guard]
Kyle Laird,” Taylor said of
his fellow seniors. “We also
have a lot of young pieces
[10 juniors and a sophomore].
We are just building
to click and mold at the same
time. Once we do, we will be
in regional contention.”
Murphy, a New Lenox
resident who is in his first
season as head coach for the
Celtics, said he wants the
Providence junior Luke Pell drives baseline Friday, Dec. 14, during a CCL matchup against DePaul Prep in New Lenox.
Celtics coach Kyle Murphy, a New Lenox resident, hopes
these early battles against top competition helps the team
peak at the end of the season when it matters most.
team to point to the postseason.
“Our kids are playing their
tails off and doing what they
can,” Murphy said. “A game
like [DePaul Prep] can only
make us better. We want to
be playing our best basketball
in March.”
Providence finishes the
calendar year with a flurry of
games starting this Friday,
Dec. 21, with a 7 p.m. game
at St. Ignatius. The next day
brings a 2:30 p.m. nonconference
game at Plainfield
East. Next week, the Celtics
are at the Jack Tosh Holiday
Classic at York High School
for five dates. The first is at 9
a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26,
against St. Patrick. Games
continue through Monday,
Dec. 31.
Celtics captain Matt DiNardi led the team with 6 rebounds.

Central rides defense to easy home win
Ten different Knights
score in 13-point
SWSC Red victory
TIM YONKE, Freelance Reporter
While the Lincoln-Way
Central boys basketball team
fell well below its 58-point
season scoring average,
the Knights had no trouble
notching their third straight
win Dec. 11 against visiting
Andrew.
The Knights rode a strong
first quarter to an easy 46-33
victory over the Thunderbolts.
It improved Central’s
record to 2-0 in the Southwest
Suburban Conference.
Andrew never led as the
Knights bolted out to a 13-4
lead after the opening quarter.
They had a trio of three-pointers
in the period, including a
pair by Joan Buch, who finished
the game as the team’s
top scorer with 10 points.
“[Andrew] was patient. I
thought at the beginning of
the game by us getting stops,
and us coming down and
scoring that was important
because of how patient they
were,” Central coach Bob
Curran said.
“It’s easier to play with a
lead when a team is taking
forever to shoot the basketball.
Whereas if they were
beating us or if it was close
then all of a sudden that
gives them energy. I thought
just executing on both ends
at the beginning of the game
was important.”
The Thunderbolts, who
suffered their seventh
straight loss, did mount a
brief rally early in the second
quarter. A 7-0 streak pulled
Andrew within 15-11. Central
regrouped at that point
and capped off the period by
outscoring the T-Bolts 11-3.
That run ended as Sean Michalak’s
short jumper just
beat the halftime horn.
Lincoln-Way Central senior forward Connor Barry scored
eight points Dec. 11 in a road win against Andrew.
22nd Century Media File Photo
When the Knights scored
the first six points of the third
quarter it seemed to take the
fight out of the T-Bolts.
“We’re hard to guard.
We’ve been well-balanced
all year,” Curran noted.
Central’s 46 points were
divided up by 10 players.
Nick Tingley and Connor
Barry followed Buch in the
scorebook with nine and
eight points, respectively.
“I think we have great
chemistry, it’s probably the
biggest thing. The guys work
well with each other. They
cover up for each other,”
said Curran. “They’re still
young where they’re making
mistakes out there, but as a
coach they come in each day
and get better. They learn
from their mistakes which is
important,” Curran said.
Deyonce Taylor led Andrew
with 10 points as Jeffery
Daniel added nine.
Defense improving
By limiting Andrew to
just 33 points, the Knights
saw its defensive average
drop from 60 points a game
to 56 through their first eight
games.
“From the beginning of
the year until now we’ve
gotten better,” Curran remarked.
Eyeing a repeat?
Central is trying to build
momentum for the Maine
East Holiday Tournament
in Park Ridge which begins
Dec. 26. Curran said he’s
looking forward to it.
“It’s the only other time
that it’s bracket play, other
than the state tournament,”
he said. “It’s like the playoffs.
You try to get that time
of experience for the team.
“We won it last year so we
want to go back and defend
our championship.”
The Knights’ next game
will be at Lincoln-Way East
Friday, Dec. 21, when the
varsity boys and girls’ basketball
programs will play
a doubleheader against the
Griffins.

Lanes was the place to be
last weekend.
The annual Lincoln-Way
Cup bowling event was
held as all three Lincoln-
Way schools went against
each other. On the boy’s
side, a final frame push propelled
Lincoln-Way East
past Lincoln-Way West as
the Griffins captured their
first Lincoln-Way Cup in
the eight-year history of
the event with a 5,884-
matchup that came down to
the last bowler on Saturday,
Dec. 15, at Laraway Lanes
in New Lenox.
Defending champion Lincoln-Way
Central (5,757)
was third, but the Knights
had the individual champion
as junior Alex Nolan repeated
as the top medalist with a
1,286 total over the 6-games.
It was the East-West
matchup, however, that stole
the show. With both schools
knowing it was going to be
close, they tried to yell each
other down with “East Side”
and “West Side” chants.
“We were down by 108
pins going into the final
game and we came back and
won,” East coach Dan Galligan
said. “Someone said
we were down 88 pins going
into the final frame. I’m not
sure, but we started stacking
strikes and it was huge.”
One of those stacking the
strikes was senior Josh Edgin,
who finished with a teamhigh
1,261 series which was
third overall. But his final
game was huge, as he struck
out in the 10th frame to help
lead the comeback.
“I had seven strikes total
in the last game,” Edgin said.
“I just knew we had to strike
and get as many in a row as
we could. It feels good.”
Edgin was all pumped up
afterward and with the Warriors
finishing their bowling
first, it all came down to East
senior veteran DJ Armbrecht.
“Nick Signore (1,153 series)
struck out in the 10th
to start it off for us,” Galligan
said. “He definitely set
the tone. Then at the end
