Carbon Footprint Certification - The XNO-
6080R is one of a select number of cameras to
achieve carbon footprint certification issued by
the Carbon Trust and as such, is recognised as
being an environment-friendly product which
minimises greenhouse and carbon dioxide
emissions.
Wisenet X camera series - The chipset at the
heart of Wisenet X cameras, including the XNO-
6080R, runs up to three times faster than older
generations of chipsets. This delivers much faster
processing of video as well as specialist analytics
pre-loaded on-board selected cameras such as
people counting and heat mapping. These offer
retailers the opportunity to measure store
efficiency between footfall and actual sales, as
well as identify peaks and troughs of customer
flow at checkouts and monitor real-time
information about customer in-store behaviour.
The processing power of the Wisenet X chipset
also provides an opportunity to run multiple onboard
third-party analytics applications in the
same way we use Apps on our smartphones, such
as ANPR (number plate recognition) to control
vehicle access to sensitive areas such as loading
bays and manage car parking areas. This
generates event notifications when an authorised
vehicle number plate is recognised and these can
be configured to trigger access control operations
such as opening/closing a barrier, as well as
sending activity reports and snapshots via email,
FTP or SMS.
World’s best WDR - The advanced 150dB Wide
Dynamic Range (WDR) technology built into many
of the Wisenet X cameras ensures clear, sharp
images can be captured even when there may be
strong contrasting lighting conditions. A standard
WDR image is normally captured by composing 2
frames with different exposures. Wisenet X 150dB
WDR uses 4 frames to create a more natural
image and negates the problem of image blurring
which is a weakness of standard WDR.
Bandwidth efficiency - Users expect nowadays
to be able to remotely view live images and
retrieve recorded video, including from mobile
devices. Wisenet X cameras utilise WiseStream II,
a complementary compression technology which
when combined with H.265 compression,
improves bandwidth efficiency by up to 99%
compared to current H.264 technology. This
overcomes to a large extent, the challenge of
ensuring there is sufficient bandwidth for the
multi-streaming of high definition images and has
a positive financial impact in terms of minimising
video storage requirements.

huge problem in 2019; disrupting schools and businesses, placing
unnecessary strain on our emergency services and reducing the confidence

In the recent
revision to the
BS5839-1:2017 the
British Standard
Institute (BSI) has
recommended, in
section 20.2b) of the
update, that: “All
MCPs should be fitted
with a protective
cover, which is moved
to gain access to the
frangible elements.”
The changes come
after the Fire Industry
Association’s Fire Detection & Alarm Council
presented their own recommendations for
changes to the BS5839-1:2017, to the BSI. This
follows a research project in combination with the
Building Research Establishment (BRE) that found
a shocking 44% of Fire and Rescue callouts turn
out to be false alarms.
The project titled ‘Live investigations of false
fire alarms’ discovered that one of the main
causes behind this high number of false alarms
was accidental activations. In environments such
as hospitals, factories and shopping centres this
was caused by trollies striking the call point with
enough force to activate the alarm.
In other instances the BRE found that false
alarms arose from individuals confusing the call
point with an electronically locked door release.
Malicious activation was also noted as a
significant cause of false alarms.
Safety Technology International’s Managing
Director, Steve Hunt, believes that the update to
the British Standard will aid the decline of false
fire alarms throughout the country.
He said: “The update to the British Standard
strongly reinforces the work Safety Technology
have been doing for over three decades. Our
protective covers are designed to prevent false
fire alarms and they are effective at doing so.”
All manual call points that are placed in
vulnerable areas and are prone to false
activations should now be protected, without the
need to consult your Fire Safety Officer.

cover is lifted the 96 dB sounder emits a piercing
alarm drawing immediate attention to the area.
This acts both as a deterrent to those looking to
raise a malicious alarm, as well as functioning as
an additional alarm in an emergency situation
without hindering legitimate operation.
A glow in the dark frame creates a visible glow
around the protected manual call point using
Glow Guide pigment. This innovative pigment
releases light for up to 8 hours in a dark or dimly
lit area – charge is restored after a short 30
minute exposure to natural or artificial light. The
Glow Guide is essential for use in an emergency
situation where locating a manual call point is
vital.
A Multi Kit version of the Euro Stopper® allows
users to assemble the multifaceted product to
suit their own desired application; with the choice
of a red or green housing shell. Models are
available for flush or surface mount applications,
and all Multi Kits have multi-lingual language
labels supplied - with space to allow for dual

IC IP cameras are built to perform in
practically any environment. The solid
Mmetal body of the MIC IP starlight 7000i

humidity, temperatures from -40°C to +65°C,
extreme vibrations and high impacts. The superior
metallurgy and finish of the MIC IP cameras

The built-in Intelligent Video Analytics
perfectly matches the robust design of the MIC IP
cameras. This type of video analytics stands out

genuine security events and known false triggers.
Triggers such as challenging environments with
snow, wind (moving trees), rain, hail, and water
reflections. Intelligent Video Analytics enables the
detection of objects over large distances. It is the
perfect solution for early object detection
in mission-critical applications like the
perimeter protection of airports, critical
infrastructures and border patrol.
Another innovation offered by MIC IP
models is video analytics while moving. An
operator is alerted, or the camera’s
Intelligent Tracking feature is triggered, the
moment a moving object or person is
detected while the MIC IP camera is
panning, tilting or zooming. Once
Intelligent Tracking is activated, it ensures
that moving objects are automatically
tracked. Optimal capture of the moving
objects is assured by dynamically adjusting
the field of view.
The MIC IP starlight 7000i offers Bosch
starlight technology as standard, combined with a
1080p resolution and frame rate of 60 frames per
second. This enables the capture of highly
detailed colour images in scenes with minimum
ambient light (down to 0.0077 lux). Fast moving
objects are captured without difficulty thanks to
the high frame rate. Perfect exposure of (moving)
objects in unevenly lit scenes is safeguarded by
the camera’s High Dynamic Range of 120 dB.
When foggy or other low-contrast scenes are
viewed, visibility is improved by the camera’s
Intelligent Defog feature. When light levels drop
to zero, the MIC IP starlight 7000i can be
complemented with an optional illuminator,
enabling the camera to capture high quality
images in complete darkness over a distance of
up to 450m. This ensures that objects of interest
always have optimum illumination.
Featuring an integrated motorized silicone
wiper to keep the glass clean, combined with the
NEMA-TS2 rating, ensure MIC IP cameras are also
the ideal choice for traffic applications such as
tunnels and bridges.
All MIC IP cameras offer Intelligent Dynamic
Noise Reduction and intelligent streaming,
combined with H.265 video compression.
Depending on the content of the scene, this
reduces bitrate by up to 80%. It helps to keep
video data manageable, while substantially
reducing network strain and storage
requirements, without compromising video
quality. Like all Bosch network cameras, the MIC
IP models offer various software and hardware
measures, such as a built-in Trusted Platform
Module, to keep video data secure.
Configuring and calibrating video analytics has
never been easier and can be done in very little
time by anyone. Simply enter the height of the
camera and the rest of the calibration is carried
out by the video analytics itself, based
on information derived from the
camera’s positioning sensors.

If the App is the point of access, the Timeline is
how you actually navigate the App. It’s basically a
status screen with an ‘at a glance’ view of the
security system and peripherals. Users can use
the Timeline to ‘actively’ manage things and make
regular changes, or they can simply manage
things ‘by exception’ – which means everything is
set and they only get notified when there’s a
change or an event occurs that they’re not
expecting.
So how is the Timeline navigated?
First there’s the Calendar, which offers a detailed
day-to-day record of the previous week’s events,
with one week of video footage. Users can view
activity such as device activations, home
automation recipes (more on recipes below) and
system mode changes. Recorded and live video
can both also be viewed directly from the
calendar.
Any Devices connected to the system,
including security alarm components, can be used
to create home automation effects. This does not
affect the integrity of the security alarm system in
any way. And of course, home automation
products can be connected, as well as web-based
alerts such as weather predictions, daylight hours
and so on.
All devices are allocated to Rooms, which
makes locating them very easy and intuitive.
Rooms are the easiest way of using the App, as
each user can simply turn on or off devices
directly from the room menu. No device is ever
more than four button presses from the home
screen.
Recipes are a user-friendly way of describing
the programming actions used for home
automation. They are programmed on the basis of
‘cause and effect’, so an example recipe could
include “IF the alarm is disarmed AND motion is
detected, THEN turn on the lights and set the
heating to 18 degrees.”
A range of recipes can be grouped into Modes,
so that only certain recipes are shown depending
on what mode the system is in. This is the basic
method of operating the home security
automation system through the App, allowing end
users to put their premises into a known ‘state’
depending on how they want to use the system.
For example, in ‘breakfast mode’, the system may
be disarmed, with kitchen power sockets on and
kitchen lights turned on if it is dark outside.
What is currently available with Texecom Connect
and what is in the pipeline?
Already available:
Texecom Connect SmartCom - This Ethernet
and Wi-Fi communicator securely connects any
Premier Elite control panel to a local area
network. It communicates using outbound
connections, removing the need to open any
router ports, ensuring simple installation and
maximum security. Any installation that has an
internet connection can reliably use Texecom
Connect with the addition of the SmartCom.
Connect SmartPlug - Any mains-powered
device can be controlled remotely with the
SmartPlug. This Ricochet-enabled wireless plug
sits between a wall socket and the power plug of
a device and is controlled via the App.
Texecom Connect API - The API is an
integration protocol that interfaces Premier Elite
control panels with 3rd party systems. The first
integration available is with Control4, a leading
provider of personalised automation and control
solutions, allowing users to control virtually any
device in a home or business.
Premier Elite V5.00 Firmware - The Texecom
Connect SmartCom, SmartHub and API all require
Premier Elite control panels to run V5.00 firmware
or above. Any legacy Premier Elite control panel
can be flash upgraded to the latest firmware. The
company regularly releases firmware upgrades to
enhance performance and provide additional
features.

Texecom Connect SmartHub - The SmartHub is

hile Christmas may be the busiest time of
year for retailers, it’s also one of the most
challenging. Regrettably, this year saw
some famous brands disappear from our high
streets as changes in shopping habits took hold
and buyers moved online. To counter this, retailers
are trying to provide an ‘experience’ that will get
shoppers through the doors, and to the tills.
It would be expected, therefore, that retailers’
systems would be up to the job at the busiest
time of year. Yet research commissioned by CSL
suggests this is simply not the case - and points
to a golden opportunity for installers!
Understanding retail
In one of the most comprehensive studies of its
kind, CSL commissioned Research Without
Barriers (RWB) to survey 301 IT managers, IT
directors, chief information officers (CIOs) and
chief technology officers (CTOs) in retail
companies with over ten employees.
The results highlight the vital role connectivity
plays in today’s retail environment, with 1 in 2
respondents claiming that they simply could not
operate without it. Retailers are reliant on
connectivity for a wide range of functions
including point of sale, stock management,
general administration, shopper and staff
analytics, tagging solutions, surveillance cameras
and, of course, intruder alarms.
A crisis in connectivity
Despite this, losses in connectivity are relatively
common for retailers, with nearly three quarters
(72 per cent) having suffered monthly downtime.

month – an event that three-quarters of those
questioned said had a moderate or high impact
on core functions.
Indeed, 86 per cent of retailers estimate that
losing connectivity for a day impacts their sales
by up to 50 per cent. Yet despite this, more than a
quarter (27 per cent) of retailers have no backup
plan in the event of a loss of connectivity!
The solution

control or perhaps intrusion systems to retailers.

switching to the Wi-Fi Mini Dome Camera to
visually verify the activity.
Because the Enforcer comes with a DIGI-WIFI
module supplied for free as standard, the solution

information is animated to help explain the
features and settings but it would perhaps be
beneficial to have a printable manual with more
information rather than just a pdf for download of
the Quick Reference sheet.
Hardware
Alarm cable entry is via a hole near the top of the
back cover with a knock-out section for an
additional cable. Alternatively, this aperture can
be enlarged. There is no space for this entry point
to be fitted with a cable compression gland and
although a small “wiring sponge” is fitted into
this aperture some sealant will likely be
necessary when used outdoors as the entry point
is just above the 9-way connector block that links
the power and alarm contacts. End-of-line
resistors can be added to the connectors or an
optional four pin resistor pack can be inserted
into a socket mounted just below the main
connectors. The resistor pack assumes common
rather than individual alarm outputs.
There are two drill-through holes for wall
mounting the unit plus another two for the
optional pole mounting plate. These would also
need to be carefully sealed to cope with typical
UK and European seasonal variations.
An optional back-box is available that allows
for conduit entry. A small spirit-level is set into the
casing (and back-box) to help verify the unit is
mounted level horizontally.
Set-up options
All switch settings are easily accessible and
clearly identified once the cover is removed. At
the top there are two slider switches for the
sensitivity setting of the Left and Right hand PIRs.
Between these is an eight-way DIL switch that
from 1 to 8 respectively has the following
functionality:
1 – LED On / Off.
2 – Alarm N.O. / N.C.
3 – Individual alarm output On / Off.
4 – Extra-High sensitivity Left PIR.
5 – Extra-High sensitivity Right PIR.
6 – N/A (future use).
7 – Anti-Masking On / Off.
8 – N/A (future use).
At the bottom of the unit are two sliders, one at
each side of the unit that switch the detection
range between 2.5, 3.5, 6.0, 8.5 and 12 metres.
This is actioned by physically raising and lowering
the individual lower PIR detector positions.
In addition to these switches, the rear
mounting panel can be raised or lowered in its
housing by approximately 7mm, identified as “To
Wall” and “Away Wall” and this has the effect of
extending the detection zones slightly away from
the wall by an angle of 3°.
Detectable speed is given as 0.3 to 2.0m/s.
The Extreme High Sensitivity setting increases the
Normal figure of 2.0°C at 0.6m/s to 1.0°C at
0.6m/s.
Performance
At power-up the unit goes through a “warm-up”
process where the LEDs blink for up to
approximately 1 minute. In practice this was found
to be generally around 15 seconds. This is

For an alarm event to trigger, both zones on a side of the
device must detect movement. This prevents small animals
from nuisance triggering the unit
followed by a learning mode for the anti-masking
setting to establish.
Regardless of the LED switch setting, the unit
will go into a Walk-Test mode for approximately 3
minutes once the cover is closed, this allows
confirmation of detection and range.
Each side of the detector has two zones with
the upper zone facing straight out towards the
horizon and the lower zone pointing downwards
towards the ground. The angle of this lower zone
sets the distance of coverage from 2.5 to 12
metres as stated above.
For an alarm event to trigger, both zones on a
side of the device must detect movement. This
prevents small animals from nuisance triggering
the unit. During setup, switch changes activate
immediately while the tamper switch is released
so there is no need to power-cycle the device to
make changes. The independent outputs allow
camera selections to be made if the alarm panel
or video recorder support such actions.
The tamper switch requires very little
movement of the top cover to trigger so as long as
this is correctly connected it should mitigate the
lack of a secure casing lock.
Mounting height is stated as 0.8 to 1.2 metres
and this is essential to get the range values
appropriately set, so this does potentially leave
them vulnerable as they can be directly
approached without triggering an alarm. In
testing the unit was found to readily achieve the
stated distances which are effectively changed by
changing the angle of the lower PIR detection
zone. The zone distance cannot be precisely set
for such devices of course as it is dependent on
variables such as mounting height, subject size
and sensitivity settings within the unit but the
walk test LEDs make it very easy to establish the
operational range for a given subject.
In To-Wall mode the device was able to provide
detection of subjects along the wall line on which
the unit was installed; the Away-Wall mode
extends the zones away from the wall by
approximately 3 degrees, a more detailed
explanation of the zone angles and spread would
have been helpful in assessing detection
capability.
On this model that has an anti-masking feature
the unit will provide a “Trouble” output if either
side of the device is covered or has its detection
surface obscured. This is stated to trigger after 20
seconds when in its initial 10-minute test mode
and then after 3 minutes when in standard
operating mode. In practice the unit triggered
after 13 seconds during test mode and just under
2.5 minutes in normal operation.
All alarm contacts are rated to 28v DC at
100mA, with alarm duration as 2 seconds ±1.
Conclusion
A very straightforward alarm device with clear
operation and simple set-up. Apart from the
reservations regarding cable entry and security of
access the unit performs well and should prove
easy to install.

CCTV – TRIED & TESTED
An overview of some of the tests we have featured in PSI independent
reports. Here we highlight recent CCTV reviews; products are listed in no
particular order. As always, manufacturers and distributors have no input
in the test reports or results
Bosch – Flexidome NDE-4502-AL
This is a compact, easy to install, ONVIF compliant dome with a remote zoom
and focus 3mm to 10mm auto-iris lens. It provides up to two 1920 x1080p
streams with a third using MJPEG. Both H.264 and H.265 are supported. A wide
selection of video analytic features along with local alarm input & output
connection and audio line in and out. Infrared illumination is quoted to 30 metres.
Review: A very capable camera with good sensitivity and 1080p HD detail. Can be
configured to record directly to iSCSI drive as well as its optional internal Micro SD card. Web
access to relevant information is not a straightforward as it could be.
IDIS – DC-Y3C14WRX
This is a 180° “Fisheye” IP dome with built-in infrared illumination. It
supports two-way audio, alarm input and outputs and a range of viewing
modes.
Review: This is a well-built 180° camera with some very flexible display modes. For
maximum benefit it would ideally be used with an IDIS NVR or front end but works well
with the supplied software or Web viewer.
Concept Pro – CP-HSD20-AHD
This Concept Pro IP66 IK10 rated speed-dome is based on the Starvis 1/2.8” CMOS sensor,
giving a 2MP (1920 x 1080p) image with a 20x zoom lens and in-built infrared illuminators
with a stated range of up to 150 metres. A 30x zoom version is also available. The camera
provides outputs for all the main analogue HD formats such as AHD, CVI, TVI along with the
digital over coax SDI standard.
Review: An interesting highly sensitive HD speed dome that gives a potentially easy route to changing
from analogue HD to IP based viewing and control, compatible with all key analogue HD systems. Some of
the camera’s core configuration options are not currently accessible via the browser but possibly may be
included in a future firmware version.
Vista – VK2-MP4XVDIR28V12M
This dome is a 4MP vandal resistant model from the Vista VK2 range, with IP66 and
IK10 protection ratings. A motorised 2.8 to 12 mm lens allows simple adjustment of
the required field of view once installed. H.264 and H.265 formats are available with
up to four streams. IR LED illumination is stated up to 25 metres.
Review: A well-featured external vandal resistant camera with excellent resolution and good sensitivity.
Support documentation is of a good standard. Additional software performed reasonably
well.

SMOKE DETECTION
Hikvision – DS-2CD4A26FWD
This camera is a high-end outdoor bullet camera identified as part of
Hikvision’s DarkFighter range. The camera offers very high sensitivity
and 1920 x 1080p HD performance with pre-installed firmware to provide
video analytic functions. These can be selected from options including
Audio Exception, Defocus, Scene Change, Face, Line Crossing, Intrusion, Region Entrance,
Region Exiting, Unattended Baggage and Object Removal Detection.
Review: The wide range of detection methods mean that this camera can fulfil the majority of current security video tasks. Its
built-in Infrared illuminator range and high sensitivity provide very good image quality even in challenging conditions.
Illustra – IP02P6ANBTT
This is an indoor unit with a 30x zoom lens and 2MP HD resolution. This particular variant
of the dome is for internal use only. The camera is given a sensible manufacturer’s
sensitivity figure of 0.4 Lux colour at 1/30th second (0.1 Lux colour at 1/8th second) and
0.04 Lux B&W at 1/8th second.
Review: While some of the functionality may seem limited compared to some other recent offerings,
this dome is built to a high standard, it performs very well and provides a good level of reliable
functionality.
Hanwha Techwin – PNM-9020V
The camera is quite heavy for a dome at just over 2kg but is well packaged and has a
very good level of construction. The dome is based on 4 camera modules fitted with
3.6mm F2.0 lenses giving a field of view of 180° x 84° with a maximum resolution of
4096 x 1800 pixels. The camera assembly when mounted allows for the device to be
rotated through 355° and tilted from 0 to 60°.
Review: This camera performs well and is capable of covering a very wide area with a good level
of image detail. The high pixel rate means that digital zooming can be used with reasonable effect.
The hardware is robust and being IP66 rated with an IK10 impact rating means that this dome will be suitable for harsh
environments.
Dahua DH-IPC-HF8835FP
This is an 8MP (UHD) box style camera with very high sensitivity and
intelligent video detection capabilities. It is promoted as a Starlight+
camera. Due to the large format of the CMOS sensor used, the lens mount is
an M43 (Micro four thirds) bayonet-style connection.
Review: It is likely that lens choice will be limited for some time unless this mount finds
more common usage in the security industry. Various compact mirrorless digital cameras use the M43 format so this may be the best
way to provide a variety of options, but controlled zoom versions may be limited and expensive.
Flir – CC-3103-01-I
This is an IP66 rated corner mounting 3MP IP camera from the Flir Ariel range
with a lens viewing angle designed to provide wall to wall and ceiling to floor
coverage of the surveyed area. It has a curved front plate to ensure no grip is
possible and that no ligature can be attached. A microphone allows sound to
be captured and discrete infrared illumination is available for low or zero visible light use.
Review: This camera is very simple to get up and running and has a wide range of
settings to optimise its performance. Image quality and colour rendition is very good and
alarm settings are clearly laid out and function well. The ease of browser access was a
welcome change from some supplier offerings.

Master Lock – Select Access 5426EURD
The 5426EURD a wall-mounted key lock box under the name Select Access with a
wide internal capacity. The 14-choice keypad is both numerical and alphabetical,
meaning that 16,000 combinations are possible to set. Once the correct code has
been entered users move an ergonomically-shaped handle to access the storage
chamber.
Review: With an aging population and the subsequent need for home visits, plus the rise of
short-term property rental companies such as Airbnb this unit certainly meets the modern demands
for secured key management.
Bolle – Cobra
Described as an all-rounder with a panoramic 180° field, Cobra glasses
weigh around 25g and have an anti-scratch outer coating with anti-fog
coating inside the lens. Impact resistance is suitable for everyday wear
and the frame features non-slip nose and arms, so this would be the
style aimed at installers.
Review: If you thought all safety eyewear was the same you are very much mistaken.
We highly recommend the all-round visibility of the Cobra for security installers.
ESP – Aperta WiFi Battery
Following on from the launch of its Aperta range of Wi-Fi door stations last year, ESP has
introduced a battery-powered version with the aim of making it quicker and easier to install
a security solution, without the need for cabling. However with mains power connected the
unit can be used to open doors via electromagnetic locks when required.
Review: In an increasingly busy market this unit more than matches most of what we’ve seen but with
the added functionality and optional locking accessories it meets many of the requirements of a more
sophisticated single door solution. However, unlike some systems its camera is not triggered by motion to
record video.
Raytec – VAR2-IPPOE-HY8-1
This illuminator is a hybrid design providing both Infrared and White light
illumination from one network controlled device. The Infrared wavelength is centred
on 850nm and a 940nm version is available on request. Power is by 4-Pair PoE or
optionally through a separate 24v DC supply.
Review: The white light allowed extremely good colour reproduction and did not excessively
flare on near objects even at the 100% output level. Similarly, the infrared had good even illumination
over distance and allowed a good contrast range for subjects. Extremely versatile.

SMOKE DETECTION
Codelocks – CL4510
The CL4510 is a door lock that combines smart technology with a traditional keypad and
card access options suitable for a range of applications. One of the main benefits of the
system is that the user can choose the most suitable entry method(s) for the application,
therefore not limiting the scope of where installers can specify the lock.
Review: The fact that one unit can do so much, especially when paired with the multi-function K3
Connect app makes this lock a dependable choice. Furthermore this is a straightforward future-proofed
unit that does not require complicated installation work or either party having in-depth programming
knowledge.
Union – DoorSense
DoorSense from Union, part of Assa Abloy Security Solutions is a legal way for fire doors
to be kept open for access and be able to close automatically in the event of an alarm.
The battery-operated system is CE marked to EN 1155 standards.
Review: The DoorSense does exactly what it should do and even though it looks like it weighs a ton it
is actually extremely light for a motorised unit and therefore does not affect the effort required in everyday
use of the door.
Aiphone – JPS-4AEDV
The pack contains all the necessary items for a single door video
intercom. The IP54, IK08 rated door station provides a 170° image
with a stated 5 lux minimum illumination at the 50cm optimum
focus point. The internal Video Master Station features a 7” touch
screen and has facilities for monitoring additional security devices.
Review: Flexible product with a wide range of connection capabilities and
optional components available to fulfil the majority of video entry requirements for
the small commercial and small to large residential properties.
Jackloc – Mk2 Restrictor
The window restrictor featuring a five disc locking barrel is tested to BS
EN 13126-5:2011 and BS EN14351-1:2006, and while there are generic
products available that follow a similar style, this unit is the higher spec
end of the market.
Review: The simplest solutions are often the most effective and the Jackloc Mk2 with
key lock certainly fulfils any requirements without complicated installation. It’s well
worth having a few of these in stock should the need arise for window safety.
The Safety Letterbox Co – Flaplock
Every year in the UK, there are estimated to be over 3,000 attacks on
businesses due to arson attempts, which contribute to over 45% of fires
that occur on commercial properties. A simple solution to the problem
of letterbox arson is a lockable letter flap, such as the Flaplock.
Review: Once fitted using the simple adhesive pad method the lock appeared
firmly held in place on a uPVC door and when locked it withstood very heavy pushing
attempts to gain access. This would easily cope with quick opportunistic cases of
criminal damage. The lock is a fairly simple solution to what can be a devastating
attack.

This is a 180° “Fisheye” IP dome with built-in
infrared illumination. It supports two-way
audio, alarm input and outputs and a range
of viewing modes.
Getting started
The camera is powered from 12 volts DC or PoE at
13.2W maximum. Once connected to a suitable
network the camera can be accessed at its default
address or ‘discovered’ using the application
provided on the IDIS memory stick. DHCP address
allocation was not initially enabled on the camera
but when defaults were loaded later, DHCP
allocation took over.
When first connected to an ie11 browser
window a request to load an ActiveX component is
given and this quickly loads and enables image
streaming following entry of the username and
password. There is no forced password entry
which is unusual but simplifies testing and setup.
It is however better practice to ensure that a
strong password is entered as soon as possible to
prevent any unauthorised access.
The supplied memory stick contained an IDIS
‘Center’ Manual in pdf format and two Zip files,
one for IDIS ‘Center’ software and the other for
the IDIS Discovery tool. The Discovery executable
could be run directly from the device.
As these files were supplied on an 8GB
memory device it is not clear why they are
compressed. No manuals were included and no
reference was provided for their web availability.
The relevant IDIS product page does however
have these for download. A 12 page Quick Start
Guide gives essential information for installing
the camera, the 20 page Installation manual gives
Operation
Installing the ‘Center’ software is straightforward
and once run, prompts the user for a password.
This must be at least 8 characters long but again
includes an option to ignore passwords. Once
operational the screen gives a 6 x 6 pane layout
with an overlaid ‘IDIS Center Setup’ window. This
can be used to discover and add devices onto the
system.
To gain access, the dome is opened by
loosening the four captive security hex screws
around the casing. A steel lanyard holds the lower
dome cover to prevent it falling when removed.
The main body of the dome has a recessed Reset
switch close to the microphone location. To the
side of the lens is a light sensor, this is well
shielded from the 6 x high-intensity infrared light
sources that are arranged around the main body.
These infrared LEDs radiate out through a
darkened strip although the red glow is still
evident during darkness.
A Micro-SD slot is at the side of the device for
memory cards of up to 128GB; the slot is not
clearly identified so may be more difficult to
locate when ceiling installed, if the memory needs
to be removed, but there is reasonable access
clearance.
Configuration menu options
The configuration menus are accessed through
either the browser or the ‘Center’ software and in
each case open a new window for the
configuration menu.
The menu tree is very simple with the first
option being:
Quick Setup – This has settings for System
(Name, T&D and Passwords), Network
(Manual/DHCP and IP addressing details), Video
(Mounting, Display Type and Stream Control) and
Audio (Codec Type, Microphone enable and
Volume levels). These are sufficient to get the
camera running and are followed by:
System – General (Device Name, H/W & S/W
details, ONVIF enable, default loading and Setup
Import / Export), Date/Time (T&D settings and

In general, the menu structure is easy to
navigate but some of the options such as motion
detection and trip wire setting are certainly not
intuitive and not well explained in the operating
manual.
Performance
The camera gives good images with impressive
colour reproduction at lighting levels below 2 Lux.
The specification gives a low light level of 0.2 Lux
and it did manage to discern colours at this level
but with significant AGC noise in the image. With
auto Day / Night mode enabled the camera
switches to monochrome at around 1.5 to 2 Lux
and this gives good infrared room coverage. The
infrared range is quoted as up to 15 metres but
this will likely be dependent on scene content as
it is not clear if this is stated as a radius or
diameter distance.
For very low light levels a Slow Shutter mode is
available but this does introduce a large amount
of motion blur to the scene.
The captured image area is stated as 3008 x
3008 (9MP) pixels at 30ips. This allows a large
amount of detail when electronically zooming in
on scene details. The f/1.98mm fixed iris lens
gives a viewing angle of 180° x 174.8°. Slightly
different pixel counts and viewing angles were
noted in some of the support documentation.
Images can be displayed in a range of formats
from the main image to a main with 1,3,4,5,6 or 7
sub panes. Each of the de-warped sub panes can
be individually pan, tilted and zoomed to show an
area of interest. Alternatively, the camera can
display a full panoramic view, a panorama and 4
panes, Panoramic 180°, Panoramic 180° x 2,
Panoramic 180° + 2 or plus 5 panes.
The dynamic range is stated as greater than
120db but the camera has an On/Off control for
WDR so this does suggest that it is a form of
digital WDR rather than just sensor performance.
The image rate drops from 30ips to 15ips with this
turned on.
The up to 8 Privacy Zones are set as black
squares only, but once set they do track precisely
within any of the additional viewing panes.
One alarm input and two alarm outputs are
provided. These are at TTL levels with a
programmable NC/NO input and outputs as Open
Collector drives with a 30mA maximum load.
In addition to the internal microphone an
alternative audio input is available along with a
line level audio output. The back-plate insulator is
supplied to reduce noise for use when the dome
is mounted on a metallic surface.
The camera runs rather warm with a rear plate
temperature of 39.6°C in daytime mode and
43.3°C with the infrared LEDs on. The
specification states an operating temperature
range of from -10°C to +60°C.
The housing is rated to IP66 or IP67 depending
on which document you reference.
Although just shown as Vandal Resistant on
the specification sheet, the product page
suggests this is IK10 rated.
Mobile phone / tablet viewing software is
available for both Android and iOS systems.
Conclusion
This is a well-built 180° camera with some very
flexible display modes. For maximum benefit it
would ideally be used with an IDIS NVR or front
end but works well with the supplied software or
Web viewer.

The smart way for a more
efficient video security project
The time consuming and costly task of planning,

Bosch, Project Assistant.
Designed and developed by Bosch Security Systems to assist system
integrators, the Project Assistant app is available to download for free
from various App stores for installation on desktop, tablet and
smartphone devices, and works on Apple, Windows and Google platforms.

actually work?
You’ve heard all about Texecom Connect. It’s designed to

Manything Pro App
Once the log-in is entered you then need to
“install” the firmware in the camera which is done
via the app and takes up to five minutes per
camera. At this point you need to set another
password to add a second layer of security.
Operation
The app allows users to view live feeds and to
store and review footage. Manything
automatically adjusts frame rate, bit rate and
resolution to ensure recorded events are sent to
the cloud (using Amazon Cloud Services).
Within the app there are a number of settings
for the camera such as motion sensitivity and
detection zones. Push and email notifications can
be set here as well as date/time display. Storing
to the Cloud can also be disabled.

Manything is a name some of you will
already know as the company that has an
app that enables unused smartphones to
be used as surveillance cameras. This is an
ingenious app especially given the number of old
phones we have knocking around, although for
the professional installer this app doesn’t present
any benefits - so step forward Manything Pro.
This Cloud Software as a Service solution
allows customers to access their video from
professionally installed cameras through the
Manything Pro app or via a web browser.
Installers can manage their customers through
the Manything Pro partner portal and the system
already supports many Hikvision, Axis and
Dahua cameras. It can be used with, or without
an NVR and an unlimited number of cameras can
be added for live viewing for free – users only
pay for selected cameras that are recording to
the cloud.
Getting started
For the purpose of reviewing the app we assumed
the role of the end user (although we did connect
a Hikvision dome camera DS-2CD2542 FWD-1 to
mimic a camera in situ) then downloaded the
Manything Pro app to a Samsung S6 edge phone.
In the scenario of us being the customer we
then needed our log-in details from the installer.
Without these details you cannot even start to use
the app so that is one level of security, managed
by the installer right from the start.
Performance
The app connected to the camera without any
problems and the live footage could be clearly
seen on the smartphone. Underneath the main
stream are the recorded events (when movement
was detected) which can be reviewed by tapping
on them. As an added bonus it is also possible to
view the camera stream and recordings via the
Manything website on a PC.
The viewing screen is easy to navigate and
shows a ‘Live’ screen which, using the Hikvision
camera was running a very short lag of just a few
seconds. Recorded footage (triggered by motion
detection) are quickly accessed from the Cloud.
Conclusion
The app certainly does all that your customer
would want it to. However what sets this
technology apart from the others that we’ve seen
is what it offers the professional installer. Given
that most installers and distributors want to add
recurring revenue subscription products to their
offering, but they haven’t got the time or resource
to handle monthly or annual payments, the
Manything Pro platform can now do this for them.
This means that you can quote for the installation
of a number of cameras in a building and also
offer remote smart device monitoring and cloud
storage, and all the billing is managed for you.
For distributors and installers who want to
offer the software in their own style - the new app
can take on their colours and logos, using a white
label version of the software called CCTV Connect,
so that the app can be branded.
