FOREWORD

The effort put into producing the “Innovation Directory

Third Edition” is to highlight potential innovations and create

opportunities for entrepreneurs and businesses to step forward

and work together toward creating value from these discoveries.

Over the years, UPM has produced many researchers in

various fields of innovation and technology. Through them,

the university also has successfully managed to play a role in

delivering many technologies for the benefit of the community

as part of the nation-building process.

As of 2017, a total of 166 technologies have been

commercialized to diverse groups of industry players with a

gross sale of more than RM61 million.

In the same year, UPM won the MOHE Entrepreneurial

Awards (MEA) from the Ministry of Higher Education and

triumphed the “National Intellectual Property Award” under

the Best Management of Intellectual Property category. These

achievements are most closely linked to the UPM’s ability to

manage its research and contribute back to the society.

Oil Palm Fruit Bunch Chopping Machine

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology is a chopping machine developed to chop the fruit bunch

into small parts prior to sterilization process.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology is able to reduce the percentage of damaged fruit. It

allows fruit bunches to be efficiently sterilized compared to previous

technologies. The cross-shaped blade is used to chop the fruit bunch into

small parts which encourages heat penetration into the fruit bunch during

sterilization process

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

Prospect Industry: Local and global Palm oil milling industry

Globally, there are about 800 oil palm mills, i.e. 782 palm oil mills,

spread across 15 countries. The vast majority of these mills are found in

Malaysia (50 percent) and Indonesia (44 percent). Production outside

of the Southeast Asia region now accounts for 6 percent of the global

market, such as in Ecuador, Colombia, Ghana and Sudan. High palm oil

consumption countries include China, India, Indonesia, and the European

Union. Global consumption for palm oil was 52.1 million tonnes in 2012.

In Malaysia, oil palm plantations make up 77% of agricultural land or

about 15% of total land area. This new innovation has potential for oil

palm plantations all over the world. Potential buyers will be the bigger

plantations as opposed to the smaller ones. In Malaysia, the biggest

players are Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) and Sime Darby.

Sime Darby produces 2.44 million tonnes or 5% of the world’s crude palm

oil output annually. In Indonesia, the big players are Intan Sejati Andalan

mill in Riau and Sawitta Jaya Lau Pakam mill in Northern Sumatera.

Environmental Friendly Tomato

Fungicide

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology is a method of developing biological control

of tomato bacterial diseases using Psidium guajava extracts as

environmental friendly surfactant and active ingredient.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology can be used to produce a commercial pesticide.

It is very stable at different temperatures (-4 – 55 °C) and can

maintain its effectiveness for a long period of time. It is able to

control bacterial and fungal pathogens simultaneously. It also

provides consistently effective control of targeted microbial

agents and easy to handle. This technology serves as an alternative

to hazardous chemical fungicides.

The potential market for this invention is in agrochemical and

pesticide industries. Malaysian agrochemical sales in 2003

registered RM23 million. Malaysia biopesticide market is estimated

to reach $5.95 million by 2021, growing at a CAGR of 13.2% from

2016 to 2021. Cash crops is projected to be the fastest-growing

segment of Malaysia biopesticide market on the basis of crop type

from 2016 to 2021. Distribution channel for this product are mainly

importers and dealers of pesticides. The fungicide market includes

fungicides manufacturers, importers and crop growers such as

tomato planters. Two of the leading suppliers of fungicides in Asia

is Zagro and DuPont Agriculture. Zagro manufactures, distributes

and markets a wide range of plant protection products including

fungicides, herbicides and insecticides.

Vaccine for Caseous Lymphadenitis

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology is a vaccine for prevention of disease Caseous

Lymphadenitis in small ruminants.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology was developed with CLA-Formalin-Killed vaccine,

where it gives significantly high rate of protection in goats mainly

when applied 0.5% concentration. It was also prepared by using

oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant. This vaccine is very effective and

shows high immune response when applied to small ruminants.

It also shows negative histopatological changes in the small

ruminant.

Prospect Industry: Small ruminant industry

Caseous lymphadenitis (CL) is a contagious, infectious and chronic

disease of small ruminants such as goats and sheep. The bacteria

will generally localize in a sub¬ cutaneous lymph node and form

an abscess that the animal walls off from the rest of its body.

Some economic losses due to CL are caused when breeding

stock is no longer marketable, when carcasses are condemned

due to internal abscesses, when animals die, or when abscesses

devalue animal hides. Sheep and goats can be infected at any

time in their lifetime, and the morbidity rate in herd can reach as

high as 15-50%. There are about 1.6% small ruminants infected by

this disease. CL is found in most parts of the world where small

ruminants are farmed, including Europe, Australasia, North and

South America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Portable Dual-Pass Tray Dryer for

Crops

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology is a tray dryer used for drying agricultural crops.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology contains a dual-pass heating mechanism by

harvesting the dissipated heat from PV module plus absorbing

heat energy from the induction heater. The dual-pass solar dryer

is constructed in such a way that the air convection flows directly

from these two heating source towards the crops for drying

process. Apart from the heating mechanism, the portability feature

enables user to dissemble and packed the equipment to be

mobilise in remote area to preserve collected sample. The quantity

of tray can be custom-made and easily attached. Apart from the

green/sustainable resource, it is also designed as a multi purpose

machine for electronic devices.

World demand for agricultural equipment is expected to grow

6.8 percent per year. Growth will be driven primarily by sales

gains in rapidly developing nations, particularly China, Brazil, and

India, as these countries continue to mechanize their agricultural

sectors. Population expansion and strong economic growth in

these nations and in other developing nations will put increasing

pressure on their farm sectors to become more efficient and

productive, resulting in growth in machinery sales. Agricultural

machinery demand in the Asia/Pacific region was more than

twice that of any other region in 2011. China and India will be the

primary nations fuelling future market advances in the region,

although other smaller markets, including Thailand and Indonesia,

will also expand rapidly. Central and South America will post

strong sales gains as well, powered by growth in Brazil and other

Electric Nose to Identify Plant

Species

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This invention is a technology to identify plant species by using

blender and signal measurement.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

The technology allows odor to adsorb into the gas sensor surface

during signal measurement process. Gas sensors will detect

odor of the herbs and output voltage from the sensor will be

sent to DAQ system. This data are then sent to the computer

for classification. The Electronic nose is battery-operated and

rechargeable. It functions with circuit design of sensors and

blender.

The Phyto-Herbal Electric Nose assists reseachers to identify

the plant species without referring to the botanists and forest

rangers. It is applicable to small and big scale industries, farmers,

herb exporters and government agencies such as FAMA, Jabatan

Pertanian, FELDA and RISDA. It may introduce recommendations

as a trainer tool to new botanists and forest rangers for learning

and training process before they expert in that field. According to

a new market research report the total digital scent technology

market was valued at $156 million in 2014 and is expected to

reach $691 Million by 2020, at a CAGR of 30.4% between 2015

and 2020. Currently, local major competing players are Majlis

Pembangunan Herba Negara (MPHN) whereas global competitors

are China and India. Locally, this product is expected to be

marketable to farmers of small scale industries such as herb

manufacturer companies, government agencies and herbs exportimport

industries. In the global market, potential sales would be

towards countries with high herbal trading including China, India,

Europe and the Middle East. The product can be distributed via

several marketing channel such as direct distribution as well as

through appointed marketing agents.

Circular Antiviral RNA to Treat Feline

Infectious Peritonitis Virus

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology is to design short RNA (≤ 34 bp) and circular for

the treatment of Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This circular, antiviral RNA has strong binding kinetic, hence, it

binds to the conserved region for effective inhibition of FIP Virus

replication. It has been found to be far more superior to recently

developed siRNA molecules. It is proven to have in vitro efficacy

with reduction in viral copy numbers by 100,000 fold less virus.

Prospect Industry: Veterinary Bodies/Pharmaceuticals/

Biotechnology

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a disease whereby the immune

system’s response in cats causes an intense inflammatory reaction

in the containing tissues. This disease is generally fatal and has

an incidence rate of roughly 1 in 5,000 for households with one

or two cats. A nasally administered vaccine for FIP is available

but controversial, and it is not proven to be highly effective. The

Circular Antiviral RNA is shorter (≤ 34 bp) and circular, hence

more resistant than other RNA molecules. It is more superior than

recently developed siRNA molecules that inhibit FIPV replication.

Research related to the Circular Antiviral RNA is welcome in order

to create a potential treatment for this disease that is widespread.

There is a high prevalence of FCoV infection in cats with worldwide

distribution and 12% of FCoV-infected cats develop FIP. In

Malaysia, 100% of cats living in catteries are positive for FCoV. Local

market prospects for this research would be veterinary bodies

and pharmaceuticals such as Zoetis, Asia Veterinary, Veterinary

Association Malaysia and the Malaysia Veterinary Council (MVC).

This research also has global potential as in the US and Europe,

more than 50% cats are positive for FCoV whereas in Great Britain,

82% of show cats and 53% of cats in breeding facilities had these

antibodies.

Eco-Friendly Fungicide for Crop Soft Rot

Disease

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This invention is a biological control agent using combination of

Pseudomonas chlororaphis strain A4 and Bacillus subtilis strain A2.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

It specifically targets Pectobacterium spp without damaging commercial

value of vegetables and fruits. It is more effective and efficient as

compared to common commercial fungicides. The technology

works at a wide range of pH from 1to 11 and is stable at different

temperatures (30oC -75 oC). The technology has also been found to be

active at different UV irradiation time. It can be utilized under different

environmental circumstances. Its characteristics avoid the need for

special transportation, handling, and storage of hazardous chemicals.

There is no need for a high initial cost for installing special equipment to

produce and dispense the product.

The global fungicides market was valued at US$11.23billion in 2014 and

is likely to reach US$16.30 billion in 2023, expanding at a CAGR of 4.4%

between 2015 and 2023. In terms of volume, Mancozeb accounted

for the highest share of more than 20% of the global fungicide market

in 2014. Mancozeb is likely to be the fastest-growing segment of the

global fungicide market during the forecast period. It is yet to face any

resistance management issues from various strains of fungi and is also

relatively low-priced as compared to other fungicides. Strobilurins are

anticipated to grow at a moderate rate however face crop resistance

issues due to excessive usage. Market prospects in Malaysia include

pesticides or fungicide producers and agricultural SMEs. Regions that use

the largest amount of fungicide in Asia are major agricultural countries

such as China, India and most ASEAN countries. Other major fungicide

consumers include Brazil, Europe and the US. Europe dominated the

fungicide market over the past few years on account of high production

of vegetables and fruits along with wheat. In the U.S., fungicides are

widely employed in the production of a large range of fruits and

vegetables including apple, pecan, potato and blueberries. This is likely

to propel its market over the next six years. Furthermore, governments

of various countries in Asia Pacific intend to create awareness regarding

appropriate usage of fungicide among farmers in order to increase crop

yield and enhance quality of the produce. This is likely to boost the

Encapsulation Method for Slow

Release of Biocontrol Agent for

Agricultural Use

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology focuses on the encapsulation of T. harzianum

UPM29 in alginate-montmorillonite clay to allow slow or

controlled release as bio-control agent.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology can be applied to promote plant growth and

as a biological control agent against soil borne pathogen such

as Sclerotium rofsii, Rhizotonia solani, Fusarium oxyporium and

Ganoderma boninnense. The shelf life of the technology is over 6

months and the concentration of the spores entrapped for every

beads is 2.135 x 105 cfu/beads.

Biocontrol Agents (BCAs) is one of the emerging trends in

Crop Protection Industry supporting the wider trend of nonchemical

pest control. This market encompasses a wide variety

of natural enemies which combat different pests in several crop

fields. The local market potential is SMEs involved in harvesting

horticulture crops and oil palm plantations. Biocontrol Agents

Market is well-established in developed nations especially in

America and Western Europe; and is gaining importance in

emerging nations. North America is the dominant market for

Biocontrol ;nd it is estimated to reach $488.4 million by 2020

at a CAGR of 14.1% during 2015-2020. Heightened awareness

Oil Palm Promoter Sequence

For Root-Specific And Inducible

Expression

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology consists of a new set of sequences of promoter

for production of transgenic oil palm or transgenic plants.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology will overcome random integration of multiple

copies of transgene into the host genome. The sequences (EgPHT)

can be used from other species to improve phosphate uptake and

enhance the other agronomic traits of importance. The EgPHT1

promoter is a practical promoter for a wide range of applications,

including genetic engineering.

Malaysia currently accounts for 39 % of world palm oil production

and 44% of world exports. If taken into account of other oils &

fats produced in the country, Malaysia accounts for 12% and 27%

of the world’s total production and exports of oils and fats. Being

one of the biggest producers and exporters of palm oil and palm

oil products, Malaysia has an important role to play in fulfilling

the growing global need for oils and fats sustainably. Global Palm

Oil Market was valued at USD65.73 billion in 2015, is expected to

reach USD 92.84 billion in 2021 and is anticipated to grow at a

CAGR of 7.2% between 2016 and 2021. Palm oil is an economically

important and versatile vegetable oil used as a raw material for

both food and nonfood products. Palm oil is the most widely used

vegetable oil in the world and is found in supermarkets ranging

from sweets, baked goods, margarine, cereals, washing powders

The population of Malaysia is considered as upper middle income

with a per capita income of about $24,770 (PPP) per year. The

organized food retail sector accounts for less than half of grocery

sales in Malaysia. Food spending is expected to grow more than 8

percent annually to reach $45.6 billion by 2020. This phenomenon

is boosted by rising incomes and awareness of the health benefits

of fresh foods. Pumpkin is a very economical fruit that can be used

in various forms. However, due to its highly perishable nature,

it is always preserved by drying. In order to optimize the drying

process, it is therefore, important to develop a program that will

effectively predict the best drying conditions and time. There

is currently no software that can predict the drying conditions

of fruits available in the market although an effort of designing

mathematical modeling the drying of pretreated and untreated

pumpkin was done in the past. In contrast, this software is user

friendly, and easy to operate. LABUsimsoft is very dynamic and can

be easily customized. It is also very light with a total size of 511kb.

and economically viable molluscicidal formulation. The global

volume market for pesticides is expected to increase from 2.3

million tons in 2013 to 3.2 million tons in 2019. Asia is forecasted

to be the fastest growing continent in agriculture, with a 2014-

AGRONE provides an innovative appearance and method. It uses

GPS system to autonomously spray crops easily and effectively.

Controllable via smartphone, AGRONE provides users with friendly

interface and full safety from chemical drifts. Previous technologies

do not provide a design that offer adequate safety to farmers from

the chemicals used and the use of plane for instance delivers less

concentrated vertical spray which ranges from six to 10 meters

This technology is a process to remove residual crude palm oil on the fiber

surface of empty fruit bunch (EFB).

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

The process is done by reducing viscosity of EFB and minimizing its

diffusivity to the inner part of the fiber through a novel process named

Hydro Solvent Assisted Extraction (HYSASE). The process produces

more than 85% oil recovery. It uses steam and water which are available

sources in the palm oil mill. The process avoids the use of any harmful and

flammable chemical. The oil removal can be done within short time in

which applicable for large amount of biomass.

Prospect: Palm Oil Industry

In the process of crude palm oil, a certain amount of oil can be lost in

forms including biomass such as empty fruit bunches (EFB), mesocarp

fiber, palm oil mill effluents (POME), and decanter cakes. Various methods

have been tried to minimize oil loss such as mulching and composting,

EFB pelletizing, and extraction of short and long fibers, but those methods

prove not viable or environmentally safe. This invention relates to the

application of thermodynamic processes in order to remove residual

crude palm oil that are attached on the fiber surface of EFB by reducing

its viscosity (oil can be easily released from the surface) and minimizing

its diffusivity to the inner part of the fiber through a novel process

named HYSASE (Hydro solvent assisted extraction). The new method is

novel to recover the residual oil, using water and steam that are easily

to be accessed in the mill and they are environmental friendly sources.

The residual oil can be utilized for other applications (e.g. biodiesel, oleo

chemical and etc.). Thus, this method can be economical viable to the

oil palm milling industry to increase the revenue of the palm oil mill. The

product is seen to be feasible for two main owners of palm oil plantations

in Malaysia which are Sime Darby, and Felda Global Ventures Holdings

(FGV). It is also possible to be relevant to the 149 palm oil-based SMEs in

Malaysia.

Method of Producing Biodiesel from

Cheaper Priced Feedstock

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology focuses on biodiesel production from cheaper priced

feedstock via heterogeneous catalytic reaction.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

The heterogeneous catalytic system was designed to replace conventional

homogeneous catalyst for simple mass biodiesel production at lower

production cost. 90 % of biodiesel can be obtained with high catalyst

reusability as compared to other catalysts in the market. High flexibility of the

catalyst towards the biodiesel feedstock leads to lower feedstock’s requirement

compared to conventional catalyst for higher purity biodiesel production.

The National Biofuel Policy (2006) was the Malaysian government’s initiative

to use environmental friendly and sustainable energy sources to reduce

dependency on fossil fuels and to stabilize and boost palm oil prices. Under

this plan, biofuels were to be produced for transport, industry, and export.

The average national blend of biodiesel in Malaysia’s transport diesel pool

has steadily increased since 2011. From 1.3% in 2011 (where biofuel was

only available in the central region of Negeri Sembilan and Selangor states),

consumption of biodiesel increased to 2.0% in 2012 when it was available in

the Southern region of Malacca and Johore states. After the implementation

of B5 program in 2014, it increased to 5% (nationwide implementation). In

2015 B5 was introduced which increase the national blend rate to 7%. In

the year 2016, Malaysia’s national blend rate is at 7.0% with consumption of

530 million liters. Biodiesel are used in the transportation as well as industrial

sectors mainly as source of material to heat boilers and generate electricity.

Combination of biodiesel utilization in transportation and industrial sectors

is forecasted to increase the average blend rate at 10% with consumption

forecasted at 770 million liters in the year 2017. The international market for

biodiesel is bright and promising. Exports of biodiesel in 2015 increased to 195

million liters from 95 million liters in 2014. In 2015, Malaysia exported to various

countries such as 65 % of biodiesel to Spain, 19% to the Netherlands and 11%

to Switzerland. The global biodiesel market is projected to reach a total worth

of $41.18 billion (€38.45bn) by 2021, growing at a compound annual growth

rate of 3.8%. The largest market for biodiesel is estimated to be Europe where

Germany is expected to hold the largest share in Europe until 2021, while Italy

is growing rapidly. In North America the US dominates the market, with major

producers of biodiesel such as Archer Daniels Midland Co., Bunge, Renewable

Energy Group, Cargill, and TerraVia Holdings.

hydrocarbon as a feedstock for the production of syngas.

This technology is suitable for biogas that contains CH4 and CO2 and

automatically helps in reducing greenhouse effects. It has several potential

benefits in sustainable syngas production using light chain hydrocarbon

such as biogas. Syngas is a key intermediate feedstock for a wide range

Prospect: Palm Oil Industry

This technology offers catalyst for syngas production by utilizing biogas.

Thus, this technology would be a potential and suitable product for the

palm oil industry. Under one of the Entry Point Project (EPP) for palm

oil industry, Malaysia aims to capture biogas in order to get high value

added products and to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. Under

this EPP, Malaysia will construct biogas capture facilities at 500 mills over

the next ten years. As a result, Malaysia will capture POME and use GHG

emissions from the waste to power mills, local communities, and even

feed excess energy into the country. Malaysia currently accounts for 39

% of world palm oil production and 44% of world exports. As one of

the biggest producers and exporters of palm oil and palm oil products,

about 90 percent of palm oil currently goes into food and consumer

goods applications and the remaining 10 percent goes into non-food

applications. The palm oil industry is significant contributor to Malaysia’s

overall economy, providing both employment and income from exports.

In 2011, the sector was the fourth largest contributor to Malaysia’s

economy, accounting for RM53 billion (USD16.8 billion) of Malaysia’s Gross

National Income (GNI). The industry directly employs more than 600,000

people, including both high-skilled and low-skilled labor. Research and

innovation are adding new jobs to the Malaysian economy every year,

while significant investment in the development of new downstream

sectors and harnessing palm oil biomass. Under Malaysia’s 1Malaysia

Biomass Alternative Strategy (1MBAS), the country will create more than

66,000 new jobs and increase the industry’s contribution to Malaysia’s GNI

by RM30 billion (USD9.5 billion).

plant Hylocereus polyrhizus seed extracts comprising polyphenols and/or

anthocyanins from the pericarp of mangosteen.

Edible bird’s nests (EBN) are bird nests made from the saliva of swift.

They are among the most expensive animal products consumed by

humans, with an average nest selling for US$2,500 per kilogram. As

Malaysian government recognizes the economic potential of the EBN, it

established the Malaysian Standard of Edible Bird Nest (MS 2334:2011)

is introduced. This industry is expected to contribute more than RM5.2

billion to the Gross National Income (GNI) in 2020. The birds’ nests

contain both carbohydrate and protein radicle, belonging to the class

of mucin-like substances, the glycoproteins. This invention provides a

simple and efficient process for the recovery of glycoproteins or proteins

using an aqueous two-phase system for the downstream processing of

glycoproteins or proteins derived from EBN (nest of the genus Aerodramus

and/or Collocalia ). The process is more cost effective in which it allows

only 15% of EBN with small plumages to be discarded as by-products

during the cleaning process compared to the previous invention via the

Liquid-phase isoelectric focusing method. Malaysia is currently the second

largest producer of EBN with RM1.5 billion in sales. Local industry has seen

rapid growth of approximately 20% per year since the early 2000s. The

intended local users for this technology are swiftlet farming industries

and edible bird’s nest processing plant/industry. Generally, the majority

of EBN producers in Malaysia are of the small scale type. At present, there

are more than 3,000 registered commercial bird houses in Malaysia.

On average, the space area of a commercial bird house is around 1,800

square foot for shop house and 5,270 square foot for a dedicated house.

The average annual yield is around 1.kg for shop house and 11 kg for

dedicated house.

This technology is a low calorie sweetener with anti-diabetic and

anti-oxidative properties designed to replace sugar, caloric or nutritive

The curculin is a high intensity sweetener (~2000X sweeter than sucrose

manufacturers in Malaysia licensed by the Drug Control Authority. Of

these, 74 are licensed to produce pharmaceuticals. There are also another

176 manufacturers licensed to produce traditional medicines and 207

for cosmetics. Malaysia’s export of pharmaceutical in 2015 valued at

RM1.31 billion, increased by 15.8 per cent from a year ago. Medicament

and glycosides accounted for 79.8 per cent of Malaysia’s total exports

of pharmaceutical products in 2015. Higher exports were recorded for

glycoside which increased by 47.9 per cent mainly due to increase in

exports to USA, Germany, Ireland, PRC and France. Other pharmaceutical

products registered increases in 2015 were pharmaceutical goods

(non-medicaments) grew by 99.5 per cent, vitamins (48.1 per cent)

and hormones (34.6 per cent). Singapore, the USA, Brunei, Hong Kong,

Indonesia and Vietnam were Malaysia’s major export destinations.

Collectively, these six countries accounted for more than 50 per cent of

total exports for pharmaceutical in 2015.Destinations that have shown

significant growth during the period were: The USA (RM159.1 million, grew

by 40.5 per cent); Brunei (RM105 million,↑28 per cent); Germany (RM27

million,↑252 per cent); Indonesia (RM75.6 million,↑26 per cent); and PRC

(RM52 million,↑42.2 per cent). The pharmaceutical market in Malaysia is

set to grow from $2.3 billion in 2015 to $3.6 billion by 2020, registering a

Dengue (Denv Il E Protein)

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

This technology is an optical sensor for the detection of DENV II E protein

and to monitor dengue infection and its progress.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology utilizes label-free DENV II detection using a single-mode

tapered fiber which surface has been modified to specifically interact with

DENV II E proteins. The technology allows quantitative measurement of

DENV II E protein with a low detection limit. A concentration of 1pM is

sufficient for detection within the first few hours when infection occurs.

This technology allows rapid detection and takes only 15 minutes. It

functions well at room temperature and has a high repeatability (SD of

±0.24).

This technology is a method to use Salmonella strain to treat cancer.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

humans as cancer has the same characteristics and progression. This

has a huge amount (11,091.82 hectare) of wakaf land that is sitting idle

and abandoned. This land covers both lands for general and specific wakaf.

The general waqaf land convers 4,836.82 hectare and the rests which is

6,255.32 hectare is specific wakaf land. Hence, the management of wakaf

lands can be made more efficient and effective using this new invention.

At the same time, this invention has potential to be applied by other

government agencies such as local authorities/municipalities such as

Jabatan Pertanian Negeri that manage idle land in each state in Malaysia.

For the year 2014, Jabatan Pertanian identified 119,273.38 hectare of

Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan. There are currently 12 directors of Jabatan

The merit perspective proposes that students be admitted according

to their success in two areas of achievement: academic achievement

and non academic extracurricular. In the past, colleges calculate

students’ merits by developing a composite ordinal scale or simple

merit calculator that combines academic criteria, including grades,

test scores, quality of high school curriculum, and recommendations.

The system aims to overcome some related issues in calculating

activities’ merit and intends to make merit calculation process more

smoothly and time-effective. The E-Merit Resident Registration

System (ERS) automatically generates a total number of merits

that are achieved by students when they attended activities; either

organized by the University or College. The system provides efficient

and systematic methods in supporting the number of merits

gained by the residents/students, and the way merits are calculated.

THE IBS FOREMAN is Serious Game training instrument embodying

the Timber-IBS Training Manual.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This technology includes the safety and skill aspects of assembling

the prefabricated timber framing components at the construction

site. It covers four stages simulating on-site erection processes of

prefabricated timber framing assembly. These four stages are a) Trade

Tools and Personal Protective Equipment stage; b) Material Storage

technology is suitable for training low-skilled labourers to master the

Globally, training for workers in the construction industry is organized

and monitored/managed by certain bodies such as the Construction

Industry Training Board, the Construction Industry Federation and

Construction Industry Training Council. In Malaysia, acting as the

supra-organisation that overseas these training programmes is

the National Vocational Training Council. The latest to get involved

in the generation of semi-skilled and skilled site operatives is the

Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). In the meantime,

there are over 64,000 contractors, a few thousand clients and

consultant organisations are involved in skill training in Malaysia.

There are easily more than one million foreign construction workers

within the industry and most have very little training or competency

to work on construction projects. With the exception of a few large

construction based companies who provide in-house training,

construction managerial and supervision training at the industry

level are mostly offered by few government agencies (Hassan, 2009).

Complementing the managerial and supervision training are the

craft-based training at the operative level offered by 20 training

and vocational institutes scattered throughout the country. The

construction industry needs a continuous supply of workers – an

estimated of one million every year, about 1.3 million foreign workers

are needed at construction sites throughout the country, to sustain

growth of 8% to 10%.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) market is expected to garner $5.2 billion by 2020,

is a bio-degradable thermoplastic aliphatic polymer produced from

lactic acid using various crops like corn, sugarcane, tapioca etc. as

a raw material. Similar to other sustainable bioplastics, PLA market

Palm wood is derived from oil palm trunks. The trunks are obtained

from oil palms when they are felled for replanting. This takes place at

the end of the life cycle of the oil palms when they are felled 25-30

years. Unlike other wood such as rubberwood or cengal, palm wood

density can vary significantly and it ranges from 150 to 700kg per

cubic metre (kg/cu.m). The challenging part is getting a consistent

quality as well as the required quality from these oil palm trunks. Palm

wood are exported to the European market, especially in Germany,

Russia and Britain, and also Australia, China, India, Kazakhstan

and South Africa. As such, the use of palm wood supports the

conservation of forests in Malaysia and the rest of the world. Huge

oil palm wood (OPW) is around us, but the quality is very low. An

efficient 6-step processing method has been patented for producing

high-performance ‘compreg’ OPW. The method is simple, effective,

and more attractive to industries. In comparison with the existing

methods, this processing is easier and faster with simple equipment.

The cost is also 8 to 10 times cheaper, and the quality is comparable

to the existing methods. This method can produce high quality wood

replacement material of the palm rest. The product is seen to be

viable for two main owners of palm oil plantations in Malaysia which

are Sime Darby, and Felda Global Ventures Holdings (FGV), and other

149 palm oil-based SMEs in Malaysia. Other possible buyers of the

This technology is a performance-based solution that meets the

required Standard A sewerage discharge into the environment.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

The size of this technology is 350 liters compared to 2000 liters current

required size (refer to SPAN, 2009, p. 21). It is lighter in total weight

when in full capacity and uses light weight media, which has a large

area for aerobic activity. The technology utilizes both aerobic and

anaerobic treatment methods to reduce the HRT cycle from 24 hours

In Malaysia, there are about 20,000 houses in Sabah and Sarawak

that are situated in water villages whereas Borneo alone has 400,000

clean rivers decreased from 334 in 2008 to 306 in 2009 whereas the

number of polluted rivers increased from 48 in 2008 to 54 in 2009.

Water quality trend shows depreciation in 2008-2009. This is partly

contributed by the stoppage of scheduled desludging carried out by

operator pursuant to the enforcement of SPAN/WSIA Laws effective

from 1st January 2008.

Emerging/developing countries have begun to realize that the

implementation of building performance assessment systems (BPASs)

have the potential to contribute towards achieving a sustainable built

environment. Consequently, some BPASs from developed countries

have been adopted or customized to be implemented in emerging/

developing countries mostly in the form of rating systems that

measure how well or poorly a building is performing, or is likely to

perform, against a declared set of sustainability criteria. Examples of

such BPASs include BREEAM in the U.K. (BRE, 2010), LEED in the U.S.

(USGBC, 2010), Green Star in Australia (GBCA, 2010), SBTool (formerly

known as GBTool) initiated in Canada (iiSBE, 2009), and many more.

The first BPA in Malaysia is the Green Building Index (GBI). In the effort

to establish a country-specific building sustainability assessment

framework that takes relevant priorities into account, MyOBSA is

created. This framework includes the pre-design, design , construction

and commissioning, and operations sub-frameworks is an assessment

framework that enables sustainability to be addressed and

incorporated in office building development, relevant to emerging/

developing countries, particularly the Malaysian context. It takes into

account local building sector requirements and expectations as well

as national and international research findings. Generally, MyOBSA

framework target private firms which prefer to use own system

developed for a practice or project, government agencies which

prefer to use own system developed for their respective state/district/

township, and owners of existing systems who wish to revise their

systems in the future. The market buyers for this product is assumed to

This innovation is a method to produce monoclonal antibodies

specific to porcine blood.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This method produces novel immunoglobulins to heated porcine

blood especially porcine plasma and it does not react to other

animal bloods (bovine, goat, horse, chicken), meat and non-meat

proteins. Thus, the results obtained from this technology is more

reliable. The cryopreservation maintains the hybridoma viability and

immunoreactivity for many years.

Prospect Industry: Halal Food Manufacturer/ Regulatory Bodies/

Research

According to a Thomson Reuters report, State of the Global Islamic

Economy 2014-2015, the global expenditure of Muslim consumers

on food and lifestyle sectors grew 9.5 per cent from previous years’

estimates to US$2 trillion (RM8.3 trillion) in 2013 and is expected to

reach US$3.7 trillion by 2019, at a compound annual growth rate

of 10.8 per cent. This invention can be used in new halal detection

kit for detection of porcine plasma in food, thereby easing Muslim

consumers in avoiding food products that contain porcine plasma.

As of 2016, 61.3% of Malaysians are Muslims, making this invention

relevant to be marketed at commercial value in Malaysia. There is

currently no competition for the immunoglobulins specific to porcine

plasma because there are no available IgGs specific to porcine plasma

and halal detection kit for detection of porcine plasma in food. Local

potential buyers of this invention would be the halal authentication in

food (fish- and meat-based products) and animal feed organizations

such as the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM)

and Department of Chemistry, MOSTI as these institutes are the main

bodies in detecting non-halal porcine plasma for halal certification

and monitoring. On the international scale, the invention is expected

to sell worldwide because the Muslim community is the biggest

population in the world, especially in Asia-Pacific countries. The

intended market by industry would be halal laboratory services,

research industries and halal regulatory agencies.

This technology relates to use of bovine gelatin as animal gelatin

source for bioencapsule beads.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES

This invention able to produce halal capsules by using six times

less amount of halal gelatin. Therefore, more halal capsules could

be produced for SME at economical price without relying much

on imported gelatin. In addition, the capsules are equipped with

targeted delivery technology which allow the delivery of medicine

and other functional ingredients safely to the intestinal tract without

being destroyed by the stomach acids and bile salts. Indeed, the

bioencapsule beads have the capability of providing an alternative

source for probiotic delivery in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical

products, preferably consumed by Muslim consumers.

The global gelatin market is projected to reach $3.2 billion market by

2020. Pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals are the second and third

largest application categories of gelatin after food, accounting for 26

percent and 21 percent, respectively of the total market, implying a

$1.3 billion market in 2015. Gelatin is a key ingredient in processed

foods, but it is also used in hard and soft capsules for prescription

drugs and vitamin supplements. The pharmaceutical development

hubs are predominantly in North America and Europe. Although halal

gelatin has become more important in the pharmaceutical sector

as Muslim emerging markets have a substantial growth rate, they

has yet to become widely available. This invention relates to use of

bovine gelatin as animal gelatin source for bioencapsule beads. These

bioencapsule beads have the capability of providing an alternative

source for probiotic delivery in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical

products preferably consume by Muslim consumers. This invention

is able to produce halal capsules using six times less amount of halal

gelatin. Therefore, more halal capsules could be produced for SMEs at

economical price. In addition, the capsules are equipped with targeted

delivery technology which allow the delivery of medicine and other

functional ingredients safely to the intestinal tract. There are 637

SMEs that operate in healthcare industry and 342 in pharmaceutical

industry that might be interested in this product. In addition, there

are 214 private facilities, 132 government hospitals, 9 special medical

institutions. 1039 health clinics, 1821 community clinics, and 254

1Malaysia Clinics respectively in Malaysia.
