Let me start by wishing you all a very Happy and

Prosperous New Year. I’m certain that one or two

of you decided to tie the knot! In this issue we have

put together a few ideas, with the help of a few local

businesses, to help you along the way.

Children’s Christmas Drawing Competition

I was quite sad to see the pictures taken down from

our exhibition in Stony Stratford Library. What a

fantastic array of talented young people there is out

there! It’s not all over yet though, as our four winners

are now our official ‘Artists in Residence’ for the year.

This means that we’ll be sharing one or two pictures

from them. If you’d like to read a little more about our

artists please turn to page 24.

Artists in Bloom

Last year we ran our first art competition for adults

and after a lot of thought and a little pressure from

one or two people we have decided to do it again.

The competition will be open to anyone aged 16 and

over. The theme will be ‘my local area’ and we will

once again link up with the In Bloom teams. For full

details turn to page 28.

Feature

The Importance of Neutering

Every year RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks has

to take care of hundreds of unwanted and abandoned

kittens.

At the height of the summer season, the branch

deals with over 100 pregnant cats and kittens. This

puts an incredible strain on their resources.

By spring this year the branch will be gearing up for

its next onslaught. If owners neutered their cats the

problem would not be as bad. While some believe

that cats should have a litter before being spayed this

is not true - the National RSPCA recommends that cats

are neutered as young as possible. Female cats can

become pregnant from 5 months of age and can get

pregnant almost immediately after.

Research shows that neutering female cats will

tackle feline overpopulation and eliminate future

unneutered females as well as unneutered male cats.

For more information on RSPCA Milton

Keynes & North Bucks and the cats and small

mammals in our care call 01908 611179,

follow them on facebook mkrspca or visit

rspcamiltonkeynes.co.uk

Morning Humans

It's Luna here, Nog’s partner in crime. I have some

breaking news - I've just been spayed!

I bet you're thinking, what a terrible shame not to

have Luna pups but who wants all that drama these

days? My human says I'm enough to handle, let alone

10 of me!

I had a keyhole spay which is done through two tiny

incisions rather than opening me up properly - phew!

This way I am back wearing my “dog-kini” in

no time. Honestly, this keyhole business is so much

better than normal spays - less traumatic and painful

than traditional spays and with fewer complications.

Apparently, vet Anna could see all of my abdominal

organs on a big screen, so cool! Recovery time for me

was certainly minimal, I felt great the next day and was

back playing with my favourite pals in no time.

Anyway, I’d better go, Barli and Welly want to play-up

and at ‘em!

If you want to get booked in for keyhole surgery or

have any questions, then get your human to book an

appointment with one of the vets or nurses and they

can give them more information.

Chow for now,

Luna

Holly’s Back

Holly Jenkins co-owner of Alchemy Therapy Centre

has returned to work following several months of

illness. Her story will touch the hearts of many and for

some of you it may be the lifeline you need.

I’m finally back to work and feeling much better!

As some of you may know I have been away for

the past few months due to illness and I am now

recovering and back managing the salon. Pop in

anytime and come say 'Hi' as I have missed you all

very much!

Back in August I became very unwell with an

undiagnosed issue with my stomach. This went on for

6 weeks where I was back and forth to the hospital

to try and find out what was wrong. I was unable to

work, drive or even leave my house. This issue finally

resolved itself after I stopped eating gluten and

found out I now have Coeliac Disease! After I stopped

the gluten my stomach was much better however,

I was not. Due to the prolonged amount of time

being unwell, the rapid weight loss and having an

undiagnosed illness I, unfortunately, ended up having

a nervous breakdown.

‘Nervous breakdown’ means so many different things

to different people and can be caused by many issues

or none at all. For me, it has been a very difficult few

months of recovery after I was involved with the

home care crisis team who looked after me for 3

weeks. Since then I have been to counselling, taking

on Cognitive Behavioural Techniques, meditating

and getting regular massages to reduce the anxiety

symptoms I was dealing with. Although I still have a

long way to go to being fully recovered I am much

more myself and am now driving, working, leaving the

house and taking control of my life again.

Mental health is something that is very rarely talked

about. I want to put my experience out there to let

others know that you are not alone and you can get

out of the dark place. The biggest lesson I have learnt

during this process is that we really must look after

ourselves. Not just our bodies but also our minds.

Without our minds functioning correctly then our

Feature

bodies can’t either. I have taken the past few months

(along with a lot of support) to get myself back to

the old me and move forward! I am on the mend

taking each day as it comes and getting stronger and

stronger!

When we end up in states of depression and anxiety

it’s easy to feel guilty and bad for the people around

us. Accept the way that you feel, give your body the

nutrients that it needs, breathe, meditate, do things

you enjoy, talk to people and take regular massages.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to get help

when you’re going through a hard time. Reach out

and let people know. All of us at Alchemy are here to

listen and help.

To meet the team and find out how they can

help you call:

Time to Relate

A change in law in

2014 requires parents

to try mediation to

resolve their issues

before applying to the

courts. To help couples

and families who are separating, Relate Milton

Keynes launched a new Family Mediation Service.

Family Mediators can assist with agreeing child

care arrangements, financial concerns and the

separating of assets. This is a more cost-effective

way of resolving disputes, less emotionally

traumatic and takes less time than long, drawnout

and potentially expensive legal battles. Aviva

reported last January that even without major

dispute, the average cost of divorce is now about

£14,561.

Lesa Clarke, Family Mediator at Relate, hopes that

whether you are separating or trying to resolve a

long-term dispute, their service will become your

first call for finding an effective resolution.

Harry’s Rainbow

Harry’s Rainbow supports children and young people in

the Milton Keynes and surrounding areas who have been

bereaved of a parent or sibling. They provide information,

guidance and various bereavement services - support

groups, individually tailored support, activities and trips.

Their aim is to predominantly

support bereaved children but they

also consider the extended family

- parents, step siblings and carers.

Using books, other resources and

individually tailored memory boxes

they support the bereaved children

through the grieving process. They

organise activities that promote wellbeing, confidence

building and self-esteem as well as facilitating contact with

others who have also suffered a bereavement. This can

help to reduce the feeling of isolation and loneliness.

Individuals and businesses can support Harry’s Rainbow

with sponsorship, fundraising and by becoming a Harry’s

Hero. The most important part of this is that if you have a

child who has suffered a bereavement get in touch.

Stony Stratford Memory Club

A new memory club for people living with dementia

or symptoms of cognitive impairment has been

launched in Stony Stratford.

Hazel Roberts helped to launch the club, drawing on

her experience as a carer and champion of those with

this difficult condition. She was a campaigner and

media volunteer for Alzheimer’s Society, was one of

the first Dementia Friends Champions and now sits on

the Dementia Partnership Board. Four years ago she

helped to launch the Newport Pagnell memory club.

The new Stony Stratford club hopes to attract those

experiencing memory or related problems, people

still living independently and managing with only

intermittent assistance from others. The main

objective is for members to enjoy an occasion of

relaxed social interaction. In addition, they will offer

Isabel

Isabel is a very

talented young

inspiration from the

origins of Christmas

she says, “Jesus

her favourite. She is

incredibly excited to

have won and thinks

it’s the best thing in

the world.

Nyah

Nyah couldn’t settle

Megan

Megan began her

artistic journey by

looking through

Christmas books

and drawing on the

work of other artists.

From a young age

She’s entered the

competition every

National Story Telling Week

It’s National Story Telling Week from 27 January to 3

February, although the fun spills over for a few days

either side of the dates. Everyone loves a story and

when you find the right book you’ll love reading too

- and then maybe writing. We all have our favourite

authors - Julia Donaldson, Roald Dahl and Michael

Morpurgo are some of the most read. Julia Donaldson

has written 204 children’s books, while Roald Dahl

wrote 49 for children and adults. Michael Morpurgo has

written over 120 books, mostly for children. Enid Blyton

wrote 762 adventure, mystery and fantasy books for

children between 1922 and 1968. Remember it is better

to write one good story than lots of terrible stories – but

practice makes perfect!

Tell me a Story

Terri Howey tells a story or two and as

good story teller she aims to tell you

something that you’ll love to listen

to. There will be a problem, some

interesting characters, possibly an

adventure, love, suspense or fear and

one or two the events.

She has an incredible ability to

communicate and express the

message of a story often slightly

adapting it according to the reactions

of her audience. Stories can be told

through all sorts of mediums but Terri

is a performer where her listeners

will become totally absorbed. It’s her

movements, facial expressions, range

of accents - before you know it the

journey has begun.

Terri has an amazing 500 plus stories

in her head and where, as a dyslexic,

writing may be slightly harder she

can certainly tell a story! She believes

the dyslexia means she sees the

world slightly differently, taking in

what is going on around her and

remembering it.

Because of her love of stories Terri

is studying for a PhD in which she

has been researching local stories

and heritage. If you would like to

hear more about her and her stories

she will be presenting as part of the

Stony Words week. Go to What’s

On, page 6 to find out more or read

memories while chatting wedding

plans, sharing gifts and indulging. The

wine. There's really no better way to

make the bride-to-be feel extra special.

Add hospitality that is hard to rival and

a setting as warm and inviting as this

Beauty Countdown

Looking good on your wedding day is easier if you follow a few simple

guidelines. Local businesses are here to guide and support you through to

your big day. Simply remember, whatever your look, stay true to yourself.

BRIDAL MAKE-UP

Base your make-up on your face, personality

and what makes you feel incredible not the

latest trend. Have a trial to find the colours

and styles to suit your look and theme. Ask

for a skincare regime 6 months before the

big day.

TOP TIP

Shoes - keep some

tried and tested old

favourites close to

hand.

THE DRESS

Wedding dresses are now more practical

- designers have added pockets for your

essentials.

With nearly three quarters of brides choosing

colours other than white and others picking

an outfit based on star sign characteristics

anything goes! Shock with trousers, a two

piece or even long to short convertible skirt.

Traditional, lace, bones, bows, capes and trains

get creative as the options are endless.

MORE THAN A

VARNISH

There is more to

perfect nails than just

putting on your polish.

Choose a colour that

complements your overall look – neutrals and

nude always look more elegant. Gel won’t chip

or smudge like a lacquer varnish and this will

give you perfect nails for your wedding day and

honeymoon too.

SOMETHING BLUE

Tradition has it that at your wedding you need

something blue. And, what better way to drive off

into the sunset...

SHOES

Think venue, comfort and time

on your feet. Flats are practical

and can look gorgeous with

the right dress in the right

setting. Heels will make your

legs look longer but nothing

worse than sinking

into the grass or

sand. Choose a

good fit and stay

true to yourself.

TOP TIP

Accessorise hair with

flowers or an alice

band. Feathers, pearls

and jewelled pins will

also transform your

look.

Get into

a Routine

For a fresh and natural

complexion on your wedding

day start your skincare routine

at least 6 months before.

Grooms will also benefit.

1. At least 6 months ahead of the

day begin to rid your skin of toxins.

Ask your beauty therapist to look

at your complexion and advise

on areas to improve and home

treatments. Cleanse, exfoliate and

moisturise regularly. Protect your

skin from sun damage and drink

plenty of water.

2. Focus on problem areas such

as tired eyes, dark circles and

dehydration. Your therapist can

recommend products for home

use.

3. In the couple of months before

your wedding if you develop one

or two stress spots try specific

treatments and recovery masks.

4. In the month before your

wedding focus on gentle

cleansing, toning and

moisturising. Don’t use exfoliators,

electrolysis or waxing for up to 5

days before your big day.

5. A week before your wedding

book your final relaxing facial

treatment.

WEDDING HAIR

Curls and classic hair-ups are

as on trend this year as are the

simple no fuss looks. A chic pony

tail shouts classic understated

sophistication. Add polish to

loose wedding hair with an extra

curl or wave. Use Neals’ Yard

Argan or Virgin Coconut Oil to

smooth frizzy hair.

Feature

A Bandit Celebration

Bandit Street food makes, cooks and sells burgers and wraps, but not as

you know them. They’ve taken these simple products to the next level –

smoking, roasting and devising recipes that shout ‘I want more’. It's street

food that's about choice, fun and affordability; watch Jonathan and Ed in

action and you’ll see and feel their pride and passion.

I’M A PULLED PORK GUY, SLOW ROASTED IN A SOY

YOSHIDA MARINADE, WITH CIDER APPLE COLESLAW,

SOUR CREAM, OUR OWN BBQ SAUCE AND A HABANERO,

MINT AND PARSLEY FINISH. IT MAY BE PASSÉ, BUT THE

RECIPE IS SO GOOD AND THE MYRIAD OF FLAVOURS LEAVE

YOU WITH THE GREAT TASTE OF ROASTED PORK. I LOVE

ITS VERY PURE, QUITE COMPLICATED FLAVOUR

- JONATHAN

Along with these great tasting recipes, they have an incredible ability

to perform. Throw in their gorgeous vintage trucks and you’ll see why

they’re already ahead of the game. Here's how it all started.

It’s only been 2 years...

since Jonathan had an idea to combine great American BBQ flavours

with British style and flair. He left his job, created a menu and spent a

tough month tasting, testing and eating. Ed came on board, the first

truck was found and off they went!

With backgrounds in catering, acting, teaching and stunt-performance,

their ability to perform while cooking up culinary delights can be

explained!

American flavours, British behaviours...

was coined in an interview and is exactly what Band-It is about. A love

to layer flavours and mix up ideas to get the most from food - like

combining apple-cider coleslaw and a ghost chilli & honey Bourbon

sauce with their US classic slow-roasted beef brisket.

Caring for food...

is why they choose local quality suppliers – some even award-winning.

Ed is passionate about introducing new adventurous vegan and

vegetarian choices into the range. Each option will have its own identity

without mimicking meat-based ideas.

32

MINE HAS TO BE THE SOUTHERN CHICK. I LOVE

THE CLASSIC FLAVOURS, IT FEELS LIKE A GENUINE

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE AND I LOVE HOW THE GHOST

CHILLI & HONEY BOURBON SAUCE BLENDS PERFECTLY

WITH OUR HOMEMADE LOUISIANA BBQ SAUCE.

- ED

Please mention Essentially Local when responding to advertisers

Jonathan and Ed are also diligent when it comes to allergies, particularly because Jonathon's son is gluten

intolerant. Diners will soon be in for a treat or two as they're planning meat-free, dairy and gluten-free recipes.

Testing times...

is when Jonathan and Ed spend a week blending flavours, cooking, taste-testing and judging with their

respective wives. They claim this is possibly the hardest but most enjoyable parts of the work! They created The

Ned Kelly and their fantastic new range of wedding puddings in this way.

Ahhh vintage...

not the lads but their unique trucks. They cook and sell their food from them, they’re pretty, they're versatile for

weddings and other events but require a fair amount of TLC. Getting their hands dirty when cooking is nothing

compared to keeping the trucks on the road! Flashes, thumbs up and waves from passing motorists prove the

effort is worth it... unless they’ve left the hatch open!

Getting married...

has changed, picturesque farm settings like Furtho Manor Farm are replacing costly traditional weddings venues.

They offer a more relaxed festival style of celebration and give the bride and groom more options for choice.

Bandit began just as this wedding scene was emerging and they are definitely leading the way!

Funky man in funky van...

Jonathan says this wedding review refers to Ed. In reality, it’s about the uniqueness that Bandit brings to

weddings and catering. Everyone loves selecting from the delicious flavours sold from their trucks. Wedding

planners and prospective brides and grooms love the engaging staff, vintage feel and ease of planning.

The adventure goes on...

with the places they visit and people they meet as well as their cooking. From being backstage at gigs to

venturing into the F1 paddock they’re part of a community – a growing street food community that offers ever

more diversity and flavour. Customers and suppliers are all part of it, and Jonathan and Ed love nothing better.

Become part of this incredible adventure - Bandit cooks at festivals, local events and parties.

Creating Your Dream Wedding…

So, it’s engagement season and, with that, the start of wedding season too!

Your wedding day is when you can be a little more indulgent that usual (if you want it to be)

and here I will share with you some ideas for styling your special day.

FOOD

Think beyond a traditional three course meal. Get your guests

mingling a little more with one of the many mobile options – think

food van/ street food. Guests can still sit at your beautifully laid out

tables or go for look for some fab alternatives at farm settings.

THE CAKE

This pretty cake is from

Euthymia Cakes, it looks and

tastes so natural. Opt for a cake

that suits you both and your

theme (if you are having one).

TOP TIP

Match your

bouquet to your

venue and table

flowers.

FLOWERS

Whilst you can do it yourself, a

local florist or boutique flower

farmer will have the know-how

and creative eye. Ask for help

where you need it most.

THE VENUE

Consider your own personal styles and

what you want from your venue. If onsite

accommodation is key but none is

available at your farm or natural setting try

something different! These fab bell tents

were set up at Furtho Manor Farm. Equally

gorgeous are the classic settings, where

you can often guarantee a room or two.

I CAN HELP YOU...

Hello I'm Pippa and I believe we should all live in spaces we love.I can help you with practical

advice from selling your home, finding inspired solutions for challenging spaces, home

styling and accessorising, to a full revamp and more. My knowledge of all things home

and design combined with my friendly approach will help you to create your dream home.

Whatever your budget, property size or design preferences, I would love to hear from you.

moment. Don’t forget to address your lighting too!

For the Extra Touches

To make you day extra special don’t forget the extra touches...

SEATING WITH STYLE

Chairs are probably the most used item in any

wedding, from the ceremony to the reception,

so think about what your guests are sitting on!

They are also an affordable way to add pretty and

stylish wedding décor that can transform your

venue. Choose cotton or lycra covers, colours and

decorations that link with your theme. Foliage or

flowers added to chairs may work best in rustic

settings. Posh up your village hall with seat covers

that have extras touches like bows that link with your

colour theme.

RINGS

Wearing a wedding ring on the third

finger of your left hand dates back to

Roman times and symbolises eternal love.

During World War II men began wearing

wedding rings to remember their families.

The fashion for men’s jewellery has grown

along with the trend for wearing wedding

rings. Don’t choose brands though, visit

a jeweller like Barović on Stony Stratford

High Street for something extra special.

They can turn previously unwearable

items into rings that you and your partner

will cherish for life. Alternatively choose

ready-made and ask them to engrave it.

Choose carefully though as modern styles

date whereas reasonably priced antique

or vintage rings can bring style, class and

elegance.

TOP TIP

Invest in some

back-up rain

shelters if your

reception is

outdoors

REDUCE THE STRESS

A good wedding planner will listen and understand

your needs, have the right level of experience,

assistants and should not go over your budget.

Balance their skill and experience not personality

with your vision, the numbers of guest, venue and

dates.

3. If they have preferred suppliers and will they work

with yours?

4. References, read the reviews and ask others who

have used them.

5. They understand your vision, have the time and

availability to plan your dream.

Check:

1. How many weddings have they planned and how

many clients they take on each year. Is this their full

-time job, if not will they have time?

2. Services that are included and not included in the

price and how they structure their charges.

Wedding

Reduce the Wedding Stress

Organising your wedding should be enjoyable for all,

but it can be expensive and stressful.

Working in Trading Standards, I have spoken to many

recently married couples and their families about

what’s gone wrong. Things to consider when you are

making the arrangements include:

Your dress

If ordering on-line – order it well in advance. Make

sure the company gives you 14 days to return it if you

don’t like it and find out if you need to pay to return

it. Pay by credit card for protection against purchases

from rogue websites or if the company goes out of

business before you get your dress.

If your dress is bespoke check that your dressmaker

be available to speak to on the day. I once spoke to

someone whose zip broke on the day and her family

had to sew her into the gown. Local dressmakers may

agree to be available on the day to deal with any last

minute issues.

Venues and wedding planners

Research your venues and wedding planner before

you engage them to host your day. While they may

offer you the earth and at a reduced price - were they

recommended and have you checked their reviews

online? Ask for a portfolio proving their claims of

being able to create a beautiful wedding reception.

Pay by credit card, even if it is just the deposit. If

anything goes wrong on the day and you are entitled

to your money back, the credit card company has

joint liability for the mistakes made by the venue or

planner. They should then help you with the refund.

Catering

Catering can cause a few issues too. If you or any

of your guests have allergies to any ingredients we

would suggest you record this in writing to the venue.

Make sure you get this information from your guests

in advance so the chef at the venue has time to

prepare.

Hopefully any wedding that you organise will all go

according to plan but if anything does go wrong and

you need advice you can speak to the

Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.

Planning the perfect invite

Your wedding invitation is the first thing that anyone

will see of your wedding. Take time to think about

the kind of impression you want to make – if it’s a

black tie event, your invitation should ooze class and

sophistication, if it’s a laid back barn affair, choose

rustic styles.

You will find a wealth of ideas online - Pinterest helps

with inspiration, but you really need to see, feel and

experience products like wedding invitations before

committing.

JMS Stationery is passionate about designing and

creating wedding stationery. Over the last 10 years

they have produced over 50,000 invitations and

recently invested in a dedicated showroom. This

amazing space displays some of the most inspirational

products you’ll find anywhere. Although you’ll find

JMS online, their priority is serving local people just

like you – all around Milton Keynes and surrounding

areas. To get inspired and have a friendly chat about

your wedding pop into their showroom.

The rules of cohabiting

Unfortunately cohabiting couples may not be aware

that they don’t have the same rights as married

couples. If you are cohabiting you may believe you

are protected by “common law”, but there is actually

no such thing as “common law marriage”. This affects

all cohabiting couples, even those who have been

together for many years.

As a cohabiting couple you are not even legally

recognised as a couple if your relationship breaks

down. This will affect your rights if you intend to bring

a legal claim after separating. A further complication is

posed for those who will have the care of the children

following a separation.

If you are already cohabiting or are planning to

cohabit consider appointing a Solicitor to draw up a

Cohabitation Agreement. A Cohabitation Agreement

can set out your plans and intentions at the outset

relating to financial outgoings, plans for any property

and how your children will be provided for in the

event of a separation.

Please visit essentiallylocal.co.uk/usefulinformation

Stock Market

Declines Are

Normal

During the latter part of 2017 stock

markets declined quite rapidly for

the first time in a while. Potentially

overvalued tech stocks, US interest rates

rising faster than expected and the US/

China trade war all played a part in

spooking the markets. Falls like this can

be scary and the media sensationalizes

things.

Here are a few insights:

• The stock market declines on average

about 14% each year - from the highest

point to the lowest point in the year but

it’s not a straight 14% decline in one go.

Markets end up rising nearly 3 out of

every 4 years.

• The stock market declines by 2% or

more in a day, about 5 times every year.

• Over long periods, returns from the stock market significantly beat inflation.

• Trying to time the market is impossible.

Now, admittedly this data relates to the US stock market, but the trends

are very similar elsewhere. Stock market declines are perfectly normal and

temporary, the advance is permanent.

3. Hang up.

5. Check the FCA’s ScamSmart

that is on the FCA’s warning list.

Women’s Institutes Lead the Way

The first Women’s

Institute began

in 1915 wanting

women to

become involved in producing

food during the First World War.

It was hoped this would revitalise

rural communities. Women’s

Institutes have evolved and now

members benefit from meeting

other people, learning new skills,

getting involved with a range of

activities and campaigns on issues

that matter.

Nearly every village and town in

our community benefit from a

group. Each one slightly different

but all of them bringing local

women the chance to get involved

by listening to some fascinating

speakers and taking part in

demonstrators.

In addition others provide

additional groups for walking, craft

and sharing books. Many groups

also organise day and weekend

trips. Each group has one thing

in common – they all welcome

new members and encourage the

social side.

You can always find a time to suit

your routine and work schedule

as groups meet during the day

or in the evening. Age is equally

no barrier, groups are not just for

older members of the community

and many women from their 30s

upwards attend the meetings.

Congratulations to Stony

Nightingales who are celebrating

their 10th anniversary this April/

May. Cosgrove is one of the oldest

groups having started in 1932.

Community & Garden

Stony in Bloom

Calcutta Brasserie Fundraiser

The fundraiser was a huge success - with mouthwateringly

delicious food and an evening enjoyed by

everyone who attended. The massive sum of £953 was

raised for SSIB funds and will help to keep the town

looking beautiful. Jean Morley and friends from Mill

apartments donated basket-loads of presents for the

raffle and Jill Pyburn from Back to the Fuchsia donated

a stunningly beautiful bouquet.

Summer to winter

SSIB volunteers and the SSBA combined forces in

the summer to winter changeover of the planters

and taking down the baskets. Perennials from the

York House Community Bed were replanted in the

winter planters along with bright and cheerful annual

pansies.

There was a great pick up and take away table in the

High Street for the geraniums that were still blooming

- having been taken out of the planters and baskets.

St Mary and St Giles School

This year pupils took part in the RHS Big Soup Share

where pupils helped by SSIB volunteers and TAs

made pumpkin soup from the vegetables they'd

grown. Staff and parents, even a few pupils, tasted the

delicious soup at an Open Day!

Jean Barrington

Jean Barrington made a large donation in memory

of her husband and a new bed is planned for the

Ousebank / Calverton corner in his memory.

Greetings Cards

Once again SSIB sold beautiful Stony in Bloom

greetings cards on the Switch-on table along with the

SSBA calendars to help raise more funds.

Wolverton and Greenleys in Bloom

Wolverton &

Greenley’s in Bloom

were awarded

Gold in the Urban

Community

Category in the 2017

Regional Britain in

Bloom Competition. In 2018 they were invited to

represent the Thames and Chilterns Region in that

category in the National Finals of the Competition.

To their delight they learnt at the National Finals

Awards Ceremony in Belfast last November that they

had been awarded a Silver Gilt overall and a Gold for

the ‘Community’ section of the competition.

The National Judges hailed the Urb Farm, the

Secret Garden and the Community Orchard as the

jewels in Wolverton’s crown – and they were also

impressed by the Flood Plain forest. Hilary Saunders,

Lynda Hammond and Jane Nunn are the core team

members, but the Secret Garden, Urb Farm and

Community Orchard volunteers are huge contributors

to the success as well. Others look after the logroll

planters and over a hundred households display

colourful doorstep planters.

At their victory celebration the Mayor of Wolverton

praised all who were involved for the transformation

of the town. Ted Smith, Chair of Thames and Chilterns

in Bloom; Norman Parker, a Regional BIB judge and

Judy Deveson volunteer BIB Ambassador for the

Thames and Chilterns Region and echoed these

sentiments.

Winter Flowers

It might be cold but that doesn’t stop some of most beautiful

flowers from blooming. Snowdrops and primroses flower from late

January through to March, yet you may see them earlier or later.

Snowdrops are found in shaded, moist areas while you’ll usually find

primroses along the hedgerows. Snowdrops were once a treatment

for headaches and a compound in the bulb has been used in

dementia treatment. Do not try this at home because their bulbs

are toxic to humans. For information on when and how to plant

snowdrops or primroses. rhs.org.uk/advice

January/ February Jobs

Prepare and tidy the garden for spring – dig, clear, clean and plan.

Bulbs and wildlife will appear in February and you can even sow

some veg under cover. Continue winter pruning can but check

which plants and shrubs need this treatment before you start.

Vegetable of

the Edition

Beetroot is possibly one of the

healthiest veggies out there and it’s

in season! Chop, juice, make soup or

bake it for the benefits:

1. Nutrients – anthocyanins and

betacyanins may help to counter

the effects of pollution and free

radicals damaging your skin, as well

as protecting against some types of

cancer.

2. Immune system – beetroot fibre

can increase your white blood cells to

fight infection and disease.

3. Blood pressure – an average

beetroot contains 20 times more

dietary nitrates than any other

vegetable. The body converts this to

nitric oxide which improves blood

flow, reducing blood pressure and

protecting against osteoporosis.

4. Better blood flow – for better

stamina and oxygen uptake during

exercise as well as recovery.

5. Folic Acid – provides a natural

source of folic acid, which prevents

birth defects.

Easy to grow – sow from February

right up to July for a succession of

produce. They need well drained soil

and a bit of compost. Make sure you

thin them out and water well.

Eye am Aware!

Last July, the government

launched an eyesight awareness

campaign which includes a check

to see if you can read a number

plate at 20 metres. If you fail this

simple test you could have your

license revoked immediately or

you may receive a hefty fine too.

Glasses and contact lenses can

correct most visual problems but

surveys show that many drivers

don’t have regular checks and

are unaware of how poor their

vision is.

Tips for New Drivers

RoSPA statistics show that

you are more likely to have an

accident in the first two years

after passing your driving test

than at any other time. Follow

these tips to stay safe after

passing your test:

1. Practise

Build up your confidence and

experience by driving short

journeys in familiar locations. Get

more experience before going

out in rush hour or in the dark.

Improve your skills with Pass Plus

Driving Schemes, use a ‘P Plate’

and fit a black box.

2. Distractions

It’s illegal to use a phone while

driving, even the sound can

be distracting. With one in four

accidents are caused by them,

turn it off. You can double your

risk of an accident by giving

friends a lift in the first few

weeks after passing, say no!

Don’t drive after lack of sleep,

using legal or illegal drugs or

alcohol.

3. Speed limits

It’s against the law to break

speed limits - you’ll risk a fine

and points on your licence as

well as increase the chance of

being involved in an accident.

Speed limits indicate maximum

speed rather than actual speed,

adjust your driving according

to the conditions – weather,

location (near a school) size and

condition of road.

4. Using your brakes

Control your acceleration,

deceleration and use of brakes -

you’ll use less fuel, put less wear

and tear on your brakes and

drivers will be able to anticipate

what you are doing. Keep a 2

second distance from the car in

front.

Car of the

Edition

Hyundai I30 1.6 Active CRDi 5d

Auto 109 Bhp

When the budget doesn’t quite

stretch to some of the bigger brands,

then take a look at cars like this

Hyundai.

A truly great alternative to Focus-sized

family hatchbacks and you’ll love the

added extras. Head, shoulder and leg

room are generous and the boot isn’t

bad either.

These cars have always been regarded

as reliable and economical. They

offer an average extra urban fuel

consumption of 62.5mpg and urban

of 39.2mpg. Other nice features

include steering wheel mounted

audio/phone controls, Bluetooth

connectivity with voice recognition,

cruise control and a speed limiter and

parking sensors.
