Reduce the Wedding Stress
Organising your wedding should be enjoyable for all,
but it can be expensive and stressful.
Working in Trading Standards, I have spoken to many
recently married couples and their families about
what’s gone wrong. Things to consider when you are
making the arrangements include:
Your dress
If ordering on-line – order it well in advance. Make
sure the company gives you 14 days to return it if you
don’t like it and find out if you need to pay to return
it. Pay by credit card for protection against purchases
from rogue websites or if the company goes out of
business before you get your dress.
If your dress is bespoke check that your dressmaker
be available to speak to on the day. I once spoke to
someone whose zip broke on the day and her family
had to sew her into the gown. Local dressmakers may
agree to be available on the day to deal with any last
minute issues.
Venues and wedding planners
Research your venues and wedding planner before
you engage them to host your day. While they may
offer you the earth and at a reduced price - were they
recommended and have you checked their reviews
online? Ask for a portfolio proving their claims of
being able to create a beautiful wedding reception.
Pay by credit card, even if it is just the deposit. If
anything goes wrong on the day and you are entitled
to your money back, the credit card company has
joint liability for the mistakes made by the venue or
planner. They should then help you with the refund.
Catering
Catering can cause a few issues too. If you or any
of your guests have allergies to any ingredients we
would suggest you record this in writing to the venue.
Make sure you get this information from your guests
in advance so the chef at the venue has time to
prepare.
Hopefully any wedding that you organise will all go
according to plan but if anything does go wrong and
you need advice you can speak to the
Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.
