Women’s Institutes Lead the Way
The first Women’s
Institute began
in 1915 wanting
women to
become involved in producing
food during the First World War.
It was hoped this would revitalise
rural communities. Women’s
Institutes have evolved and now
members benefit from meeting
other people, learning new skills,
getting involved with a range of
activities and campaigns on issues
that matter.
Nearly every village and town in
our community benefit from a
group. Each one slightly different
but all of them bringing local
women the chance to get involved
by listening to some fascinating
speakers and taking part in
demonstrators.
In addition others provide
additional groups for walking, craft
and sharing books. Many groups
also organise day and weekend
trips. Each group has one thing
in common – they all welcome
new members and encourage the
social side.
You can always find a time to suit
your routine and work schedule
as groups meet during the day
or in the evening. Age is equally
no barrier, groups are not just for
older members of the community
and many women from their 30s
upwards attend the meetings.
Congratulations to Stony
Nightingales who are celebrating
their 10th anniversary this April/
May. Cosgrove is one of the oldest
groups having started in 1932.
