Workforce is a key topic
for many businesses in Martin
County, the state of Minnesota
and our nation as a whole. There
is a need for more employees to
fill positions and a greater need
for employees with the necessary
advanced skills to fill those
positions. As the Baby Boomer
generation continues to retire
from the workplace, this need
will continue to grow. How local
employers will fill those positions
will continue to evolve, one
way the Fairmont Area Chamber
of Commerce is helping to address
this is our partnership in
Fairmont Area Life.

to help you understand how
to strengthen your business
to the 'Weinstein Effect,' our media has been filled
with examples of failure to understand appropriate
conduct or to properly handle cases of misconduct.
This is your opportunity to get up to speed on this
important topic and to help your business avoid the
negative consequences of employee misconduct.

to fill skilled positions with young people entering
the workforce from our community.
While there are positions that our local
employers are trying to fill, there are young people
entering the workforce in our community that
might have the abilities to fill these jobs.
Some local graduates are going to head off
to college to continue their educations and
others are going to be ready
to start their careers right
away. Fairmont Area Life is
working to educate students
and their parents that there
are other options out there as
well.
There are a number
of local employer sponsored
programs in our area that can
help with tuition reimbursement,
on-the-job training, apprenticeship
and internship
opportunities and even job
shadowing. Fairmont Area
Life is working to eliminate
the communication gap between
local employers and
students and their parents so
they are aware of these great
opportunities, right here in
Martin County. To that end,
Fairmont Area Life has employers
who sponsor our efforts and promote
their job opportunities and training or education
programs available after being hired. These
are great jobs with wages that allow these young
workers a chance to start their careers right here
in our community!
We have printed a marketing piece that we
are selectively inserting into school programs for
athletic and fine arts events. We are also working
with school staffs to engage their efforts in

We are actively considering and exploring ways
to expand the efforts of this program and to get
more employers involved. There are many great
employers with job opportunities here in Martin
County.

Fairmont Area Life got its
start, and is still working to
attract former Martin County
students back to our community
after they have gone
away to school and started
their careers. Once they start
a family, often there is a desire
and need to return to the
quality of life they remember from their childhood.
We want to assure them that all of the
great things they grew up with are still here and
that there are more reasons than ever before, to
come home. Coupled with great jobs and employers,
those are the same reasons a young person
just entering the workforce could choose to stay
home here in Martin County. This is a great place
to live and work, we want to make sure all of our
best past and present people know about it!

Graduating Seniors of Martin County high
schools who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree
in agriculture or an area of study that services
agriculture, may apply for up to $8,400 in scholarships.
In partnership with the Agriculture
Future of America (AFA), the Agri-Business
Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber of
Commerce is offering
two $4,200 scholarships,
which include
registration for the
Fall 2019 AFA Leaders
Conference.
To be considered
for a scholarship,
please visit www.agfuture.org/scholarships.
Here, you can

AFA Community Scholarships, as well as other
scholarships AFA offers. Click on the "Apply
Now" button to access the application. You will
be asked to write a 300-500 word essay on your
personal vision for agriculture and how you
plan to contribute through your chosen career
in the agriculture and food industry. We encourage
you to draft this essay in a separate word
processing program and then copy/paste it into
the application. Please note that your application
is not complete until you continue through
the last page of the application and receive an
email confirmation.
Applying for an AFA Community Scholarship
online also makes you eligible for an AFA
National Leader and Academic Scholarship;
however, you may only receive either a local or
a national award.
The Martin County application deadline
is March 13, 2019. If you have any questions

Seminar on workplace harassment (Continued from page 1)

Educational Campus (SMEC) in Fairmont.
During the seminar, instructor Crystal
Hanson of South Creek HR will help you to
understand how to prevent and address the
various forms of workplace conduct that undermine
respect. This seminar is designed to
inform supervisors and people managers of
the current laws and methods that promote
respect in the workplace and explain how to
deal with problem behaviors early. Crystal will
help you to understand all forms of unlawful
harassment, define retaliation and how to
avoid it. She will explain the essential components
of a policy against harassment, help you
to understand your reporting obligations as a
supervisor and outline ways to respond to employee
complaints with fairness.

Culligan Water of Fairmont is celebrating
70 years of business with the Johnson family
and it’s valuable employees continuing to provide services. Culligan was
brought to Fairmont in 1949 when Glen Johnson purchased the dealership
and ran it out of his garage. The business grew and eventually expanded to
Faribault, Jackson and Cottonwood counties. Glen built a dealership facility
in Fairmont in 1962 where the dealership still resides today. In 1972 Glen
sold the dealerships to his two sons Richard and Tom Johnson. Richard took
over the Fairmont dealership and Tom the Jackson location. Twenty years
later, in 1992, Richard’s son Rich Johnson moved back to Fairmont after
graduating from Augustana University and joined his father in their family
business. In 1997 Rich married Stephanie Johnson and bought out his dad
to start the 3rd generation of Culligan Water in Fairmont. Rich and Stephanie
live in Fairmont where they are raising their two sons Jayden and Jaxon. Culligan
Water of Fairmont is located at the 1962 building location and today the
building features multiple expansions made over the past decades. Culligan
Water services include water softeners, iron filters, drinking systems, bottled
water, and an outdoor vended water system featuring reverse osmosis purified
water and alkaline water. Homeowners and businesses receive help
with anything that deals with making water better! Excellent service, quality
products, and dedicated employees are what have kept Culligan Water in
business for 70 years! The support of the communities served is appreciated
and Culligan looks forward to continuing to serve the water needs for all. Culligan

Starting the year off for us is a Brazilian A Capella
group on January 13th at 3:00 PM. The
band formed in 2013 is now on their first international world tour. They sing
Brazilian arrangements as well as current pop standards. Come enjoy an Evening
of Piano with Jason Farnham this January. You'll get to enjoy a mix of contemporary
and classic piano pieces- along with some originals. This is more

Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont welcomes new behavioral
health provider Cathleen LaLonde, Ph.D., to practice at
Fairmont hospital. Cathleen LaLonde, Ph.D., recently joined
Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont and began seeing behavioral
health patients Dec. 3. A Clinical Psychologist, Dr.
LaLonde’s primary professional focus is the emotional and mental health of
patients. This includes many areas of behavioral health service, such as anxiety,
depression, trauma work, women’s health and mood or emotional symptoms

Director of the Fairmont Opera House, Inc., to our 13 member Board of
Directors. Blake will be stepping in to serve out the remainder of the threeyear
term vacated by Luke Long of Hy-Vee upon his relocation.
Blake's background in non-profit management and his experience
in building community engagement will provide a unique perspective and
insight on our board of directors. Blake’s term on our board will begin January
of 2019 and extend through December of 2020. We welcome Blake to

in 2019, Jack and Jeanne Doolittle found out that
they had been named from a pool of 40 nominated
retailers - the region’s 2018 Five Star Retailer of the Year. Doolittle’s Carpet and
Paints, and second-generation owner Jack Doolittle have implemented significant
changes in the past few years, including expansion of its facility to include
5,000 square feet of showroom and 4,000 square feet of warehouse space. Doolittle’s

RevWood Plus, which is a waterproof wood flooring and also Pergo Extreme,

Grants available for local youth
The Martin County
Youth Foundation
grant applications
are now available.
Grants will be awarded
twice during the
year, in the spring and fall. The mission of the
Martin County Youth Foundation is to acquire,
manage, and distribute funds to enhance the
lives of youth in Martin County.
Grants will be made to qualified nonprofit
organizations including those with
501(c)3 status, public agencies, units of government,
and churches that will address important
community youth needs. Funds received can be
used for youth program costs and support materials.
Interested groups may pick up grant applications
and guidelines at the Fairmont Area
Chamber of Commerce, 323 East Blue Earth Avenue,
or visit: www.martincountyyouthfoundation.org.
The deadline for submitting grant applications
is March 15, 2019. Return completed
grant applications to Martin County Youth Foundation,
P.O. Box 826, Fairmont, MN 56031 or
drop them off at the Fairmont Area Chamber of
Commerce.

What is distinctive about this foundation?
The Martin County Youth Foundation
is an area endowment fund dedicated solely to
serving youth needs. It has the ability to provide
funding for youth programs and their support.
Why should you support the Martin
County Youth Foundation? Youth are our
greatest natural resource. Investing in our youth
is investing in our future.
Who oversees the investment? Contributions
are invested and managed by St. Paul &
Minnesota Foundations. Earnings are then made
available through a grant process to respond to
area youth needs. A local committee of adults
and youth serve as the Advisory Committee.

Start your New Year out by learning something new! Decorate
a winter cake, learn tricks on how to use your Instant Pot, go snowshoeing
at Cedar Creek Park (Snowshoes are available for winter weekend
checkout from CER), try scuba diving, take a computer class, find out the
latest information on Social Security or Asset Protection Planning with
CER. Join the Woodcarvers Club-they meet on the 4th Tuesday of the

MCSAP is sponsoring a free Family Snowshoe event at Cedar
Creek Park with CER and Prairie Ecology Bus Center on February 9. Contact
