Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Amelia Goudzwaard
Amelia Goudzwaard, 17,
a senior, plays basketball
and softball for Malibu
High School.
What are you most
looking forward to this
year?
I’m really looking forward
to playing at full capacity
and fitness after my
knee surgery and building
on the progress we have
made as a team to hopefully
secure a spot to CIF. We’ve
worked very hard during
the past couple months and
I’m excited to build on that
during the season.
As a multi-sport athlete
is there anything you
learned in softball that
can help you on the
basketball court?
I’ve learned how to
handle pressure and how
to become a better leader
and teammate. Softball and
basketball are very different
from each other, but
both require us to encourage
and rely on each other
and focus on the team outcome
rather than individual
success.
What are your hobbies
outside of sports?
I enjoy volunteering and
coaching for Malibu Little
League. I love to spend
time with my friends and to
take my dog for walks on
the beach.
What are your goals
this year?
I want to enjoy my senior
year and have a successful
season where we can earn
a spot in CIF playoffs. I
want to make sure we keep
our energy up during our
season and play smart basketball.
As a personal goal,
I want to play as hard as I
can to help the team succeed
while also having fun
with my friends.
Where would you say
you’ve most improved
as a player since the
start of last year?
Since last season, I’ve
learned how to be more
confident with the ball and
not to be afraid of making
mistakes. I think I’ve also
improved with making post
better moves while also trying
to stay calm, cool and
collected. It can get pretty
hectic in the key on the
court.
What do you like about
playing for Coach
Meyer?
I like how dedicated he
is to the team and is determined
to help us become
better players physically
and mentally. His helpful
feedback, such as “don’t
play with your hair on fire”
has helped me become a
better post player and how
to handle pressure.
Who has the best
nickname on the team?
I would say my co-captain
Chloe Dyne. I tend
to call her Chlo-money
(Chlo$) because of her great
shots, hits, and her amazing
athletic ability in both basketball
and softball.
What do you think of
this year’s team so far?
I think that we have made
an enormous amount of
progress since our first game
together a couple years ago.
We have all worked very
hard during practice and
on our own time to get to
where we are now and have
pushed through the recent
events to come together as
a team. Four of us lost our
homes in the fire and I think
it had brought us closer.
If you could have one
superpower what
would it be?
I think my dream superpower
would be to heal
other people who have serious
injuries and illnesses
around the world.
What is your dream job?
I would love to be an orthopedic
or pediatric surgeon.
