Doral Lane, police said. Nothing was reported missing inside. Dec. 22 • The windshield was shattered on a vehicle that was parked on the street in the 15000 block of S. Paddock Lane, police said. Dec. 21 • An unoccupied home reportedly was broken into and had feces smeared inside its bathrooms in the 14000 block of S. King Road. • The windshield of a vehicle was smashed out, though nothing was missing from the inside, in the 12000 block of W. East Hank Court, according to police. • Michael Greenfield, 54, of 13819 Creekside Court in Homer Glen, was charged with improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving under the influence at S. Bell Road and W. 159th Street. • The driver’s side window of a vehicle was allegedly broke out, causing a large hole in the rear driver’s side window and two large holes in the rear windshield in the 14000 block of S. Pine Grove Drive. The vehicle was reportedly legally parked on the street at the time of the damage. • Police reported the driver’s side front and rear windows of a vehicle were broken out in the 14000 block of S. Mustang Drive. The windshield also reportedly had multiple cracks in the glass. It was unclear at the time of the report if anything was stolen from the inside, police said. Dec. 19 • An unlocked barn was reportedly entered and had a John Deere E130 riding lawn mower stolen from it in the 17000 block of S. McCarron Road. Dec. 18 • A locked storage unit was allegedly broken into and had a drill, nine-piece tool kit, numerous Snap-on tools and a tool cart with tools in the 14000 block of S. Sheffield Drive. • A pickup truck had its window shattered and brown spray paint put on the driver’s door in the 15000 block of S. Cranberry Court, police said. Dec. 15 • A shed was allegedly entered and had a chainsaw, multi-use motor and three lawn tool attachments stolen from it in the 17000 block of S. McCarron Road. Dec. 12 • A concrete saw, hammer drill, chainsaw, toolbox with hand tools and a handsaw were reportedly stolen from a detached garage in the 14000 block of W. 147th Street. Dec. 11 • The tailgate off a GMC Sierra 3500 pickup truck was stolen in the 13000 block of S. Cedar Road, police said. Dec. 10 • Deputies were called to an alarm about 12:30 a.m. at Lord and Hunt Jewelers at 14222 S. Bell Road, according to police. The owner of the business let them inside, and they found a hole in the drywall and several items out of place, police said. It was initially reported that the hole was cut in the drywall in order to gain entry into the business after a steel door was pried open at a vacant business next door. The owners were said by police to be unclear at the time of the report what was missing from the store. Dec. 5 • Peter Smilguis, 52, of 16662 W. Sioux Drive in Lockport, was charged with driving off the roadway and driving under the influence at W. 151st Street and S. Rosarie Drive. Dec. 4 • Racquel McCain, 30, of 1144 90th Street in Chicago, was charged with retail theft and obstructing identification at the Jewel-Osco at 14200 S. Bell Road. She was held on an active DuPage County warrant, police said. • A vacant residence was reportedly broken into and had copper piping stolen from its basement in the 15000 block of S. Sulky Drive. Mokena’s Pink Slip Boutique, in partnership with Make-A-Wish Foundation, granted a wish for a Bourbonnais teenager who recently went into remission from an aggressive form of Stage III B Hodgkin lymphoma. Eighteen-year-old Julianna Bourassa’s eyes grew wide in shock as she stepped into the Pink Slip Boutique and was told to pick out any prom dress from the store to wear to Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School’s prom in May. “It was magical for her and for me, too,” her grandmother Debbie Bourassa said. ”It was tough to keep it a secret, with how close we are, but the look on her face was worth a million dollars.” The prom dress was a wish that only Debbie knew Julianna wanted, until two local wish-granters asked what Julianna wanted for Christmas. Soon after, a plan was concocted to surprise Julianna with the dress of her dreams. “That was honestly the best experience I could ever have,” Julianna said. “I haven’t felt happiness like that in a long time.” Reporting by Megan Schuller, Assistant Editor. Vernon Lyons wants to make one thing clear: He’s not retiring. After 68 years at the helm of Orland Park’s Ashburn Baptist Church as administrative pastor, Lyons is relinquishing his title and taking up a new one as an associate pastor. He will hand the reins over to the Rev. Tommy Thompson on Jan. 13 during a special service dubbed “The Crossing,” which is to honor the past and look toward the future. Thompson said the service will be a celebration of God’s work over the past 68 years, as well as all that’s still to come. The transition has been gradual since the church voted with 99 percent confidence to approve Thompson as the new administrative pastor in 2017. Since then, Lyons slowly has been offloading some of his responsibilities onto his successor. “There’s an anticipation swelling; it’s been a good year,” Thompson said. “With the transition, we were very methodical with it, to make sure the church had the opportunity to get used to the adjustment, as well, especially after [having] the same family pastor for 68 years. Jan. 13 is really a historical day because of [the transition].” Lyons added, “I will have less responsibility and more work. ... The word retirement is not in the Bible. Moses kept going until he was 120.” The Crossing is set to start at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13. Ashburn Baptist is located at 15401 Wolf Road in Orland Park. FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT ‘This transplant will give me a second chance at life’ More than 3,000 new patients are added to the kidney waiting list each month, according to the National Kidney Foundation, and an average 13 people die each day while waiting for a lifesaving kidney transplant from a deceased donor. Kymberly Harrington, now 28, was diagnosed in 2003 at the age of 13 with Crohn’s disease. Little did she know that diagnosis would alter the course of her life. A year later, during routine testing, doctors discovered abnormal liver function, which turned into primary sclerosing cholangitis. It was a chronic, slowly progressing autoimmune disease that damages the liver over time, causing inflammation, scarring and cirrhosis of the liver, ultimately resulting in the need of a liver transplant. “It was overwhelming,” Kymberly recalled when she diagnosed. “Not only was I battling these two illnesses but my dad had passed away from complications with Crohn’s disease, so I was very afraid.” Her mother, Glynda Harrington, worries about her high risk of developing cancer until a donor is found and a transplant occurs. But Kymberly remains positive about her condition by looking ahead to the goals in life she wants to accomplish after recovering from a liver transplant. “This transplant will give me a second chance at life,” Kymberly said. “I will continue of my dreams of finishing medical school and becoming a doctor that can empathize for my patients, because I have been a patient. FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND Lockport artist guild member utilizes old-school style The calendar might say 2019, but Ted Overcash’s artwork is straight from the 16th century. Overcash, a member of The Artist Guild of Lockport, primarily does silver drawings, a practice that was common in the days of Leonardo da Vinci prior to the discovery of graphite as an artistic material. “Before graphite, your master artists — and I’m sure you’ve seen them when you look at Leonardo da Vinci and [Albrecht] Durer and some of their drawings — they were drawing with silver,” Overcash said. At the age of 35, Overcash, who has always been physically active, had surgery and was not able to exercise, so he needed a new hobby. “I said, ‘Well, what can I do while I’m healing up?’” he said. “I started drawing, and that’s how I got started.” He gets his inspiration from the outdoors and has depicted a wide variety of creatures, but Overcash is self-taught and plans to improve his artistic skills simply by practicing. “[It’s] just kind of like on-the-job training, just drawing and practicing and hoping that over a period of time I can see a slight improvement in what I’ve done previously,” he said. While Overcash sometimes struggles to figure out what to paint next, no matter what he chooses as his subject, he will continue to look forward to his favorite part of the artistic process. “My favorite part is — if I’m doing a drawing — that as I’m finishing I actually like it,” he said. FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION Tinley Park Public Library celebrates 2019 with ‘noon’ year party The Tinley Park Public Library invited children in second and third grade to celebrate 2019 in style with an afternoon New Year’s Party in honor of the days, weeks, months and possibilities ahead. Held from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Jan. 2, the new event featured fun, games, crafts and more. There also was a special countdown to noon, which captured the spirit of the holiday with a balloon drop and noisemakers. Youth Services Assistant Rakhshanda Ahmad explained why library staff wanted to kick-off 2019 with a celebratory get-together. “It’s a fun thing that I thought the kids would enjoy,” Ahmad said. “[We served] pizza, chocolate chip cookies, Goldfish crackers and apple juice. It’s a nice party for the kids to come to.” Volunteers from Grissom Middle, Prairie View Middle and Summit Hill Junior High Schools were on hand to help party-goers create a series of crafts, including festive party hats and silly masks to accompany their noisemakers. They also led activities, including a glowstick ring toss and balloon paddle game. Eight-year-old Memorial School student Liam Geist is looking forward to a fantastic 2019. At home, he plans to do whatever it takes — completing chores, getting good grades, etc. — to convince his mother to remove a rule. “My New Year’s resolution is to play on one of the computers because my mom won’t let me,” he said with a smile, as his mother looked on.
