After a couple of years of writing this 

each month, this is the house that 

had made me sigh with longing the 

most. Grade II listed with origins in 

the 1500s and additions ever since, 

including a very grand portico in 

the 1930s. More recently, a heavenly

Letter 

What are your plans for 2019? I don’t believe in New 

Year resolutions – I cringe from the finger-wagging 

bossiness of them – and prefer instead to start the 

year thinking and dreaming about what I’m cooking up for the 

months ahead. It’s exciting, rather than pressurising. 

One thing I’m really looking forward to in 2019, is eating 

dinner in my lovely new kitchen/family room. Then it will be 

on to the next stage, converting the former kitchen space into a 

telly room/study. 

We moved it to create a more contemporary open-plan layout 

in the Victorian house – like the ones I love poring over in the 

houses we feature in this magazine. 

There are two very special ones this month and although they 

couldn’t be more different, both are giving me ideas for my new 

space – which is perfect timing now I’m at the delicious stage of 

choosing colours, fabrics and light fittings for it. 

The start of the year is a great time to cosy up with swatches 

and paint charts, to plan renovation and decorating and we hope 

you will find lots of inspiration in our Interiors supplement and 

those fabulous houses.

Back in 2011, when Ian and Lisa decided to make the 

move from Tunbridge Wells to Hastings, they had 

an offer accepted on an old pub which they hoped 

to convert into a house. But a bad survey put paid to that. 

“I was standing in the street on a rainy day with the 

survey in my hands feeling miserable, when I looked 

up and saw a ‘for sale’ sign outside Bourne Hall, a 

1930s Wesleyan Chapel. I thought oooh...” 

Ian, who worked as a chartered surveyor for 25 years, 

explains why he fell in love with this landmark building in the 

heart of Hastings Old Town. ‘I love big spaces. As a surveyor I 

specialised in shopping centres, I could walk into an old shop 

and immediately work out how to cut and carve the space up.’ 

He’d worked with Tunbridge Wells architect Michael 

Winter on a previous project and knew he was the 

man for this job. Ian’s next task was to persuade the 

planners that the hall could be turned into three luxury 

town houses of roughly 2,000 square feet each.

It took 12 men to lift the glass floor of the mezzanine into place 

“Other developers had wanted to turn the hall into multiple 

flats which the council conservation officer didn’t want to see 

happen. The only way I could get planning permission for 

three dwellings was to promise to restore the building to its 

former glory. That meant completely replacing the Portland 

stone façade and putting in metal windows throughout.” 

Fast forward a year and in a relatively uncomplicated build 

the three spaces were completed to the high standard Ian 

envisaged and the conservation officer was happy. Ian and 

Lisa chose one to live in and sold the other two to finance 

the build. The only real sticky moment was the discovery of 

a buried basement which meant they had to dig a six foot 

structural supporting wall. As they dug down, they discovered 

an amazing slice of history with a message in a bottle. 

“It was a handwritten note from the original builders 

dated 1939. They wrote how bombs were raining

In turn my builders left their own message.” 

The wow factor Ian and Lisa brought to their house 

is evident the moment you step through the front door 

onto a glass mezzanine floor. “It took 12 men to lift 

it into place,” admits Ian. “But it was worth it.” 

The entrance space is dominated by a neon light picture of 

the Queen designed by Hastings-based lighting artist Philip 

Oakley. (The original drawing it was based on is by another 

local artist Danny Mooney.) It couldn’t look more perfect 

– or regal - than warmly lighting this uber modern space. 

Standing on the mezzanine it’s genuinely hard to 

know where to look first. The three internal storeys 

are linked by an incredible helical staircase especially 

designed for the space, which dominates the centre 

of the house, winding up all three storeys. 

Ian confides how a “similar staircase in a Chelsea town 

house might set you back £100,000. Instead I found 

a firm of joiners in Gathurst who built it from MDF 

with a central steel supporting core. I got both this one 

and one for the space next door, made for 30k.” 

For a bargain piece of joinery (£15,000 per staircase 

being a bargain considering the scale and size), it’s an 

outstanding and clever piece of statement design. 

The glass mezzanine wraps around into a bank of huge 

white walls with a solid-floored living area. A grey and 

lime green corner sofa from contemporary Italian furniture 

brand Ligne Roset, from Wells Interiors, hugs a corner. 

By the glass balcony is a pair of vintage ‘slice’ chairs, with 

a Ligne Roset table in black and lime green Perspex, topped 

with a chinoiserie vase that matches nearby cushions. 

The vase and cushions give the air of being terribly 

expensive but were bought from the same Habitat collection 

a couple of years ago. “Cheap but effective,” says Ian. 

On the floor is a wonderful silver and white rug with 

a metal thread skull and crossbones woven in.

the other side is an original British railway poster of Hastings 

that Ian bought at auction just as he decided to move here. 

As the staircase winds down to the split-level ground 

floor – the area Ian calls the “heart of the house” – more 

art lines the walls, from original 1960s photographs 

of actresses Liz Taylor and Catherine Deneuve to an 

iconic 1980s print of actress Brigitte Nielsen by fashion 

photographer Herb Ritts and a lovely soft-toned acrylic 

on glass painting by Nicholas Fudge (a contemporary of 

Damien Hirst) and a 1960s mugshot of a young Al Pacino. 

“One of the best things about this house is that it’s 

possible to display really big bits of art. In our previous 

house we couldn’t do that. Large spaces can be hard to 

use. People often have the instinct to break them up 

with partition walls but there’s no need to if you can

break up a space with art and colour.” 

That said, Ian did resist his instinct 

to paint the walls a darker shade. 

“I’m normally a dark paint, wallpaper 

type of person. I always said I never wanted 

to live in a white house because it would 

be too boring. I’ve surprised myself by 

keeping this all white, but I’m pleased I 

have. And I’ve learned that once you get 

into white you start to get boring about all 

the difference shades of white out there.” 

And there is certainly colour aside 

from the art. The ground floor living 

area showcases plenty of warm textiles 

and furniture in soft greys and blues. 

At one end sits a huge 70-inch TV. 

“Lisa went crazy when I ordered it”, Ian 

laughs. “She said there’s no way you are having 

that thing in the house. But it’s funny because 

I look at it now and think it’s not quite big 

enough.” 

A step down is the dining and kitchen area 

dominated by a white extendable dining table 

and blue upholstered chairs (more Ligne 

Roset) leading into a grey kitchen area, a space 

Ian wanted to look as minimal as possible.

cosy and warm with nice personal touches, such as some lovely 

tactile Victorian Easter egg chocolate moulds on the wall, 

(aside from being a Shakespearean scholar Lisa is a trained 

pastry chef who makes her own brand of artisanal chocolates) 

and a lovely set of vintage brass scales which came from a junk 

shop in Bexhill. 

The kitchen area is flooded with light from the glass 

mezzanine directly above. But it’s from this bottom level 

that the other main ‘wow’ element of this house really shines 

- the incredible floor-to-ceiling open library shelves which 

rise up and up and up uniting all levels of living space. 

The oak shelves were made by German firm Hulsta, via 

Wells Interiors. The size did create some challenges though, 

requiring internal scaffolding in order to put it together. 

The loveliest thing about them is that the contents 

are most certainly not minimal, they hide a multitude 

of knick-knacks and family junk such as Lisa’s collection 

of decorative chicken ornaments, family photos, jigsaw 

boxes, Pokémon toys, fossils and holiday mementoes. 

Ian picks up some doll-sized plates and a bust of Mussolini. 

“Where did these even come from? I can’t remember. 

I’m blaming Lisa, she’s the hoarder”, he laughs.

But on closer inspection Ian must admit to a bit of 

hoarding too. There’s a collection of Star Wars toys and 

jigsaws, Lego pieces and a large amount of Harley Davidson 

memorabilia, from boxed Harley Davidson Barbie dolls 

to mini metal-display bikes – all indisputably his. 

There’s also a picture of Ian meeting the actual Queen, 

not just the neon version hanging in the hallway. 

“She was really chatty. I thought she’d just shake my hand 

and move on, but she talked and talked. She was wonderful.” 

The cavernous shelves are also home to Lisa’s collection of 

Penguin classics. Ian does a quick count and stops at 500. 

“She’s been collecting them for years. I think she’s probably 

singlehandedly driven up the price on eBay,” he jokes. 

Developing the building themselves meant a few perks. The 

only outside spaces – a 400 square foot roof terrace at the top 

and two smaller terraces - Ian and Lisa added to their own 

house. The tiled terrace, planted with pots of pretty seaside 

grasses by local garden designer Tony Howard of Harborough 

Nurseries, is littered with scores of crab and mussel shells. 

“It’s the seagulls,’ explains Ian. “They drop crab 

and mussels from the sky onto hard surfaces, so they 

can break the shells open and eat them. It was a bit 

odd at first, but we’re completely used to it now.” 

The gulls clearly aren’t scared off by a fabulously 

fun fibreglass Jaws head which Ian picked up 

in a junk shop in Tunbridge Wells. 

Also on this floor are three good-sized bedrooms 

and two bathrooms, which only exist as they do 

because Ian was able to get planning permission to 

rebuild and raise the original roof by a metre. 

The master bedroom suite is a masterclass in discreetly 

minimal storage designed by Ian and built by local tradesman 

Wayne Kent. A sleek wall of oak-panelled built-in cupboard 

boxes line one wall, the warm walnut mirrored on the 

internal doors and bookshelves elsewhere in the house. 

The bedroom is styled with cheery cushions and 

throws in clashing yellow patterns, a green cocktail chair 

and a little kidney shaped table with brass topped legs 

that looks like a mid-century find, but Ian confides 

is from Ikea, and some fun 1950s style prints. 

The two guest bedrooms are equally cosy and inviting, one 

housing more of Lisa’s collection of decorative chickens. 

Less impressed though are Ian’s grown-up children. He 

jokes, “We were only able to move from our old family 

home into this place because we had an empty nest and the 

children had left home. But when they visit, they are all

very annoyed they don’t have their own bedrooms anymore.” 

The main bathroom is effortlessly simple. The use of 

a floating basin and w.c. which sit above the floor, tricks 

the eye into thinking the space is bigger than it is. 

It’s clear this home has been developed with love, 

talent and skill by a couple who understood exactly 

what they wanted to gain from the space. Solid building 

techniques to exacting standards, imaginative design, 

a few key heirloom pieces, art chosen not for its value 

but because Ian and Lisa loved it, some clever bargains 

and a whole host of fun family life smattered on top. 

But now that it’s all finished it is time for them to move 

on again. The couple plan to sell the house next year so 

they can finance a self-build – a long-held dream. 

Ian explains, “We’ve got the plot and the planning 

permission and I’m raring to get started on it. It’s 

very contemporary and all open plan. I couldn’t go 

back to a normal house with rooms after this.

Using nature as an inspiration for interior design 

is appealing; many of us are drawn to prints 

that use flowers, birds and other natural motifs. 

We make patterns with them, colour schemes and 

artworks, but interiors expert Lisa Evans is inspired by 

the natural world in a textured, raw and earthier way. 

A visit to her house in the exquisitely pretty village of 

Frant, near Tunbridge Wells, becomes an immersion into 

a sensual world of texture, scent and elemental forms. 

Happily for me, this all starts in the garden. We are sitting 

in Lisa’s idyllic home office space, built at the bottom of her 

garden and looking back along a central brick and stone patch 

to the house. The garden building helps to enclose the outside 

space, the idea being to make it feel like another room. 

“All you would need is a sliding glass 

roof over the top,” laughs Lisa.

The garden was designed by Bonnie Lamont and the 

planting is glorious; there’s a demurely softening froth of 

Nepeta, Campanula and Cosmos in the borders on either side 

of the paving, punctuated by stately foxgloves, bay lollipops 

and low yew mounds. The colour scheme is elegant - blues, 

whites and cream, all set off by soothing deep green foliage. 

“I wanted a low maintenance and pretty space,” 

explains Lisa. “I put together a mood board and 

Bonnie and I came up with an initial plan - and 

then my builder and I put it all together.” 

The view from the garden room takes in the whole 

garden and continues through the house right to the 

front door. “It was very important for there to be a 

one line of sight all the way through,” says Lisa. 

The house is as open plan as possible and the bi-fold kitchen 

doors open right out and bring the garden in. “This space is 

a major part of the house and yes, it is another room, really. I 

sit at the kitchen table and look out onto it all year round.” 

This is where the structural evergreens and garden 

features really come into play. There are some 

ingenious touches too, not least the clever use of 

storage - for bins and garden equipment that disappear 

under a living roof of catmint and Euphorbia. 

An old rustic verdigris copper kettle acts as a central planter 

in the middle of the garden, contrasting beautifully with a 

more modern rusted steel fire bowl, which sits on a plinth near 

the garden room. This was a bargain of a find from Homebase. 

“I love the texture of rust, and the dark greens of foliage 

- the earthy colours,” says Lisa. “And the juxtapositions - 

the old copper kettle planter next to a raw modern fire

to have all new, or all old - that can be too contrived.” 

Lisa owns and runs Ensor Interior Design with 

showrooms in both Frant and Cuckfield. She bought 

her cottage, just down the road from the showroom, 

when she acquired the business in 2016. 

“I wanted to be near. I did consider living above the 

showroom, but I just love looking out onto the garden. 

Frant is a fabulous place to live. Our showroom overlooks 

the church and this house is very near, so it was ideal.” 

Lisa is very involved in the day-to-day running of 

the showrooms and strives to make them enticing to 

her clients. “We create areas within the showroom 

in order to present our work. People can come in to 

buy gifts, fabrics, anything that we can supply. 

“We have an appointment system for the pattern room, 

as we need to be able to give the clients our undivided 

and individual attention. We do not charge a design 

fee, any charge is covered by what we sell. Everything is 

made by hand in the workroom, so it’s all bespoke. For 

instance, the sofa bed in the chalet is a one off. All sofa 

beds are made to order, to whatever size you want.” 

Once the house was bought, Lisa lived with the 

original layout for a year, getting the feel of it, 

planning the work and instructing an architect. 

“When I moved in, there was a little galley kitchen and 

a separate living area, it was cramped to say the least. So 

I completely refurbished, putting in new plumbing and 

electrics. There is underfloor heating. There’s no space in the 

house for radiators. We used a massive amount of concrete in 

the living area, put in underfloor heating, then insulated all 

the walls and added a new front door. Now it’s really cosy.”

because the speed of this refurbishment was fast. 

“My builder Neil Griffin did the house in three 

months,” Lisa smiles. “He also made the chalet and 

did all the hard landscaping in the garden. He’s 

even been in today to wash the windows. It’s been 

fantastic. He and his team have done everything.” 

A good builder is invaluable, but an experienced 

and knowledgeable client is just as vital. “I’m decisive.” 

Lisa says. “I know what I like. Neil suggested I had 

a different floor, but I said I’d rather wait,” 

The floor is from Bailey Wighton in Tunbridge 

Wells. “It has grey and some hints of yellow. The 

colour and texture was perfect.” The company also 

supplied and fitted all the carpets in the house. 

As you would expect from her profession, Lisa has a strong 

sense of colour and texture and both are of paramount 

importance in a scheme. A case in point is her choice of 

colour for the interior walls – the same one has been used 

throughout. This has the effect of unifying and enlarging 

the spaces, providing a backdrop and soothing the senses. 

“I wanted it to be dark with elements of green,” she 

explains. “l chose Tarlatan from the Paint and Paper Library. 

I’ve used it before so knew how it would look. It’s important 

to have warmer colours when using the greys; blue-grey is 

cold and needs mixing with ochre elements to warm it.” 

Similar colours have been used for the curtains and the soft 

furnishings, so the whole cottage is luxuriously enveloped 

in warm grey. “I like really thick fabric,” she says. “I like

the strength and the strong lines. No fuss, I’m quite direct.” 

If you’re looking for patterns and prints here, you will 

have to look very hard. “It’s a masculine look,” she says. 

“A statement look. You can create detail with contrasting 

bands of colour - it doesn’t have to be pattern.” 

Remarkably, the only bits of pattern in the entire house are 

the timorous beasties featured on the cushions in the sitting 

room and the chalet - and upstairs in the back bedroom there 

are some cushions covered with a delicate Mark Alexander 

fabric. “These are the prettiest things in the house,” she laughs. 

The success of a scheme ultimately lies in the detail 

and this is evident in Lisa’s business life at Ensor Interior 

Design too, where curtain making is a speciality. 

“Attention to detail and experience is key. You can be

the best designer in the world and something will happen that you’re not 

prepared for.” Knowledge and experience keep things on track, so to speak. 

“Before I bought the business from Mary Ensor I worked very 

closely with her for eight years. She’s passed on so many tricks with 

fabric that the girls have worked out over all their years here - how not 

to show the seam, balancing the curtains, joining up the pattern. 

“We prefer to do lined and interlined curtains to get an elegant look. 

All the blinds have blackout linings, otherwise light shows through the 

fabric when it’s against the window - and then you can’t see the pattern.” 

The curtains in the garden room are a case in point. They have

“This is important,” explains Lisa. “It means that I’m not looking 

at the lining from the outside when the curtains are drawn.” 

Throughout the house there’s evidence of Lisa’s skill as a designer 

and also of her keen eye for a find. There’s a fabulous pumpkin lamp 

base from Porta Romana and a beautiful contemporary painting by the 

artist Liesha Yaz that epitomises Lisa’s love of nature and its colours. 

“I love shopping and sourcing items,” she says, and will often 

buy several pieces from the same place. She found the large

“I think you should have bigger things - and less of them,” she says, 

indicating the huge circular Slovakian railway mirror in the sitting 

room. “I love this mirror. It reflects the light, but also reflects the 

other areas and the rust within the glass reflects the textures of the 

house, the juxtapositions of rough with smooth, old with new.” 

The basin cupboard in the bathroom is an old Indian 

cupboard, its rough rustic patina rubbing along nicely 

against the smooth sleekness in the rest of the room. 

More contrasts of old and new are found throughout the cottage. In 

the master bedroom, for instance, there’s a new headboard, but there’s 

also an old chair covered with a loose cover made from old grain sacks. 

“I always try to update things rather than discard them - if 

you have a good quality sofa you can change the covers, add 

loose covers, new cushions and refresh the look.”

whites and creams, all set off by soothing deep green foliage

Perhaps it’s the rigour of its vertical plan, but the classic townhouse seems to 

inspire owners to be wonderfully bold with paint and decoration 

Ros Byam Shaw’s beautiful book, 

Perfect English Townhouse is a 

tribute to one of our loveliest of 

vernacular home styles – the multi-storeyed, 

terraced or semi-detached, uniquely 

urban dwelling that is the townhouse. 

The thirteen houses featured in the 

book date from 1670 to 1965, but 

while they span historic eras from the 

Stuarts, through Georgian, Regency 

and Victorian, right up to the reign 

of our own dear Queen, they share a 

special appeal: a familiarity of layout and 

proportion that just feels right to the eye. 

On top of all that is common among 

them, each of the houses in the book 

is wonderfully quirky and original, 

packed full of ideas to aspire to – 

repaying repeated visits to the pages. 

One theme that particularly jumped 

out at us as worthy of further study 

is the way all the houses balance very 

strong colour and vivid prints, with lots 

of art, features and collections – yet 

never look cluttered, messy, or hectic. 

We’ve come to the conclusion that the 

secret is having a certain proportion of 

balancing neutral tones in natural materials, 

be it in original wood floorboards, linen 

upholstery, sisal flooring, bamboo, rattan 

and wood furniture, or wicker details. 

Here are some of our favourite examples 

– followed by suggestions of how to achieve 

such exquisite colour balance at home.

previously divided into flats. Frank Hollmeyer uses this first floor room as a study.

Josephine Fairley is welcoming the new year, with fresh new, exfoliated skin 

Each New Year I like to think of myself as ‘shedding a 

skin’. Leaving bad habits behind, embracing new ones 

and generally, loving that clean-sheet-of-paper feeling. 

But I also literally like to shed a skin, at the start of each New 

Year, via exfoliating products. 

By now, the central heating’s been on for months. And 

did you know that your clothes are actually acting as a wick, 

extracting moisture from your body? Christmas and the 

festivities take their toll, too and the problem with dry skin 

is that it starts to look flat. It doesn’t refract light in the way 

healthy, dewy, plumped-up skin does and it can get flaky. 

Simply piling on moisturiser, though, 

doesn’t cut it. Dusty, dry surface cells just 

don’t soak up nourishment and moisture 

the way that new cells do. So the answer 

(to paraphrase the Daleks) is simple: 

‘Exfoliate! Exfoliate!’ 

I have a positive arsenal of scrubs and 

exfoliators in my bathroom. They’re 

among my favourite products because they really are the 

fast-track to better-looking skin. So this month, I thought 

I’d point you in the direction of some favourites of 

mine – and of the many women who’ve trialled

organic ingredients and works to transform tired, dull-looking

seaweed, almond and sunflower oils. 

Lately, I’ve also discovered the Natural Spa Factory which 

offers an astonishingly wide portfolio 

of scrubs to buff skin beautifully 

clean while leaving it lightly veiled in 

nourishing oils, perfect for that ‘at-home 

spa’ experience. 

Tickled Pink Yuzu, Pink Beets & 

Watermelon Scrub, £20 for 250g, is 

probably my favourite – a silky-textured 

scrub based on chunky salt granules, along with antioxidant 

beetroot pieces and powder, which gives a lovely pinkflecked 

look. These are suspended in a base of skin-nurturing 

grapeseed oil and peach kernel oil, leaving skin veiled in 

moisture and nourishment. 

Happily, plastic ‘microbeads’ have been outlawed now, for 

ecological reasons – and there was really no need for them 

anyway, when there are so many natural ways to deliver 

equally good results. But you might notice that none of my 

hot tip scrubs contain crushed particles like pumice or nut 

shells. There are two reasons for this: a) these can scratch 

skin, if used over-zealously, and b) I personally find 

nothing alluring about having a gritty bottom from 

sitting on a layer of particles that don’t dissolve in 

water. 

Salt and – preferably – sugar scrubs do dissolve. And 

the reason I prefer sugar is simply that I’m a gardener, 

and salty scrubs sting wounds acquired when, for 

instance, pruning roses. As long as I haven’t been in the 

wars with my secateurs in hand, though, salt’s fine. 

Personally, I also like my scrubs to come in an oil 

base, which not only makes for easy application – small, 

gentle circles is enough – but also leaves skin 

with a veil of oil. I then like to smooth on 

body butter, for a skin-quenching doublewhammy.

Cleanse & Polish Body Gentle Mitt Cleanser, £17.10 for 

200ml. One side is like a flannel, the other ‘looped’ and a 

little rougher – but still gentle, as the name promises. You use 

it on damp skin, paying particular attention to anywhere that 

needs a little extra smoothing and exfoliating, such as knees 

and heels. 

Best of all, it has that amazing, signature Cleanse & Polish 

fragrance – a head-clearing rush of eucalyptus oil which so 

many of us associate with getting our faces clean, at night. 

And faces need exfoliation just as badly as what’s below 

the vest-line. Again, I have a wide range of weapons at my 

disposal. (My bathroom shelf resembles the arcade game made 

famous by Tipping Point…) A new favourite, though, is Gaia 

Naturally Face Exfoliator, £35 for 60g, gaiaskincare.co.uk, from 

a Devon-based award-winning spa whose all-natural products 

I adore. This combines sugars and calendula oil, and has the 

finest texture, infused with a glorious citrus scent of petitgrain, 

mandarin and clary sage which delivers a huge pleasure factor 

as you gently work it into facial crevices. 

Liz Earle Gentle Skin Exfoliator, from £12 for 50ml, is 

another of my go-to facial scrubs: deliciously creamy, kind-toskin 

and infused with that familiar eucalyptus. 

I also love Origins Never A Dull Moment, £28 for 125ml. 

Here, the polishing agent is actually crushed papaya, which 

works to deliver radiance via enzymes which dissolve the 

dead cells rather than physically scrub them away. And at 

the incredibly affordable end of the spectrum, there’s Yes to 

Grapefruit Uneven Skin Tone Facial Scrub, £7.99 for 110ml. 

I’m a massive fan of the ‘Yes’ products (as are Beauty Bible 

testers, who’ve given them many of our awards over the years) 

and this zesty exfoliator, featuring naturally skin tone-evening 

grapefruit, is suitable even for daily use. Although, I think 

scrubs should be used on the face just two or three times a 

week, ideally. 

So don’t leave it till the bikini season’s looming to get in the 

habit of blitzing your skin. Face or body, regularly removing 

those cells – and the watchword, always, is ‘gently’ – is one 

of the best favours you can do to your skin. I promise you’ll 

almost hear your ‘new skin’ slurping up whatever you choose 

to smooth into it, afterwards.

Eminé Rushton gets real about the serious health dangers of sustained stress 

– and suggests how to bring essential balance back into our busy lives

In 2016 the World Health 

Organisation (WHO) Global 

Burden of Disease Survey estimated 

that by the year 2020, stress-related 

mental health conditions will be the 

second most common cause of disease 

(after ischemic heart disorders). Oh my. 

New Year, with its optimistic tradition 

of good resolutions may not feel like the 

best time for a spot of sobering reading, 

but let’s be honest – how many of us 

find ourselves feeling exhausted and 

overwhelmed at this time of year? 

With Christmas over, the reality of 

over eating, over drinking 

and over spending sink 

in and while it can be 

lovely to catch up with 

family, that can also bring 

its own unique stresses 

– and sustained stress is 

something we all need to 

start taking very seriously. 

If we take a look at the physiological 

impact this might have upon our bodies, 

we’ll see that periods of sustained 

heightened stress keep us in a holding 

pattern of increased cortisol and 

adrenaline. The former is our stress 

response hormone, the latter, our ‘fight 

or flight’ hormone and while they are 

both essential for human survival in 

extreme situations (or they were when 

our ancestors were at risk of sabertoothed 

tiger encounters), if they are 

permanently ‘on’ they can cause serious 

damage. So if we don’t give ourselves 

ample opportunity to catch our breath, 

properly rest and wholly unwind, our 

stress levels can tip us over into chronic 

health conditions.

immediately” 

“Rather than helping us push 

through, this pressure can make us feel 

overwhelmed or unable to cope,” says 

the Mental Health Foundation. 

When the BBC’s Dr Rangan 

Chatterjee announced earlier this year 

that he no longer believed poor diet to 

be the biggest contributing factor to ill 

health, naming stress instead as the main 

culprit, a lot of people sat up and started 

to take notice. 

But, as bleak as this may sound, there 

is some good news. Unlike a chronic 

untreatable disease, stress is something 

we can take active steps 

to alleviate – almost 

immediately. 

Lifestyle factors make 

up the main causes 

of excess stress in our 

modern lives: lack of 

sleep, too much time 

online, overly busy 

lives, insufficient restorative time, but 

hearteningly these are the easiest to 

rebalance. Here are some tips. 

1. Draw clear lines between work and 

rest. Get into the habit of putting your 

Out of Office on your email when you 

are off work, and don’t feel compelled 

to respond. You are paid to work certain 

hours, not to be eternally ‘on’. 

2. Mute your WhatsApp if it’s 

overwhelming and turn off all apps via 

the notification centres. Get used to a 

life that is not dominated by bleeping 

symbols. Realise that life does not begin 

or end with your device. 

3. Almost all devices now have inbuilt 

timers and switch off modes – so 

when you have had your 30 mins on 

Instagram, it will turn itself off. Instal 

Night Mode onto your devices too, 

to ensure that if you must be online 

late, you are at least cancelling out 

that cortisol-raising blue light. Better 

still, switch off entirely at least an hour 

before bedtime, every single night. Light 

a candle, read, bathe – learn to leave 

‘life’ behind, and choose rest instead. 

4. Build a daily meditation habit. 

“Mindfulness and guided meditation 

apps can be really valuable for 

improving wellbeing and aiding 

relaxation,” says Eve Critchley, from 

mental health charity Mind. If you’re 

a tech addict, put it to better use: 

download Headspace, Calm, Aura or 

Stop, Breathe and Think. 

5. Go to a regular yoga class. All 

yoga classes have a guided yoga 

‘nidra’ meditation at the end. Even 

better is a dedicated yoga nidra 

class, which is all meditation. 

6. If there are things about your 

life – from work to home – that 

are continually overwhelming 

you, make a bold and honest list 

of what you can realistically do 

to lessen their impact. Can you 

say ‘no’ more often, and 

give yourself a break? 

Can you retrain or 

study on the side, 

to move into a role 

that is better-suited to 

your strengths and passions? 

7. Visualise, don’t dream – focus 

on what is really possible, and 

how you can begin 2019 with a 

resolution that will ease your 

stress levels, for good.

natural world; the leaves as they turn 

amber and golden, the birds relishing 

the glut of rowan berries, the rich and 

dark earthy smell that has been absent 

all summer. In these moments, I feel 

the energy change on the wind and take 

heed of the guidance all around me. 

What one self-care ritual do you never 

skimp on? Every day I spend time 

with nature, without this I start to feel 

disconnected. For me the healing power 

of time in nature is indescribable. It’s 

my wild medicine, my way to root and 

ground, to connect to life’s simple and 

most important pleasures. 

What’s cooking in your kitchen this 

month? I have been busy creating 

elderberry syrup. This vitamin-rich 

syrup is a winter essential for our 

household and is a real joy to create – I 

adore the deep purple hues that stain 

the wooden spoon and tint my fingers. 

As the evenings are b eginning to carry 

a chill on the air, we are cooking more 

homegrown veg in our stew pot. 

Share one book that taught you 

something amazing about life. Wild 

by Cheryl Strayed, a memoir of a 1,100 

mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest 

Trail in the US. I read this book at a 

real low point and it gave me hope. 

What always brings a smile to your 

face? My gorgeous dogs! We rehomed 

a Romanian stray in December 2017 

and have a Labrador retriever who 

is now four. They are such huge 

characters and have so much love to 

give, they are a delight and always 

bring me such joy. 

What is the best treatment you’ve 

had locally? I really enjoy practising 

yoga and regularly attend classes with 

Ashlyn of Fisical Mind and Body, 

along with the beautiful classes at

Vegan Black Bean Chilli with 

Avocado, Lime and Tomato Salsa 

Serves 4 Prep time: 5 minutes. Cooking time: 25 minutes. 

This is my vegetarian daughter’s favourite meal. It’s ready in 30 minutes is packed with 

flavour, plus the black beans are a great antioxidant and source of protein. Serve with rice 

and you have a perfectly balanced vegan meal. The salsa freshens the dish. 

• 1 tbsp olive oil 

• 3 peppers sliced 

• 1 red onion chopped 

• 3 garlic cloves crushed 

• 800g (2 cans) black beans, drained 

• 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 

• ½ tsp smoked paprika 

• 3 tsp chipotle paste 

• 400g passata (or tinned tomatoes 

mashed with a spoon in the pot) 

• Salt and pepper 

For the salsa 

• 1 avocado chopped 

• 100g cherry tomatoes roughly 

chopped 

• Juice of 2 limes 

Wine+ 

This vegetable-based dish needs 

freshness to match the lime and 

the tomato salsa. I love the flavours of 

a Sauvignon Blanc from the wine ‘New 

World’ (not Europe!) that stand up to the 

grapes higher acid content. So go for the De 

Grendel Sauvignon Blanc 2017 from South 

Africa Waitrose £11.99. Lots of lovely 

vibrant fruit and not as herbaceous 

as some New Zealand versions. 

• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 

• 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 

1Sauté the onion for 5 minutes before 

adding the garlic and peppers. 

2Colour for 2-3 minutes before adding 

the balsamic vinegar. Let it bubble for 

a few seconds then add the black beans, 

paprika, chipotle paste and passata. 

3Add ½ tsp Maldon salt and a few 

grinds of black pepper. Simmer for 15 

minutes. 

4While it’s cooking, prepare your salsa 

by combining all the ingredients in a 

bowl with a pinch of salt. Serve with rice 

and your salsa.

Wine+ 

Such a lovely spicy winter 

warming dish would require a wine 

without high tannin content and with 

some freshness. A lovely fuller-bodied 

dry or off-dry rosé would work well. These 

wines work just as well in the winter as they 

do in summer paired with the right food. 

I would go with the dry version and try 

the superb Sainsbury’s Santa Julia 

Malbec Rose from 

Argentina £11. 

Slow Cooked Beef and Beetroot Curry 

Serves 6 Prep time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 4-6 hours in a slow 

cooker, low oven or Aga simmering oven. 

Aside from giving this curry an amazing colour, the beetroot adds 

a sweetness and richness. Serve with rice, a dollop of yogurt and 

fresh coriander. 

• 700g cooked beetroot - 

either cook your own or 

buy pre-cooked beetroot 

(but not in a jar, it has to 

be fresh not pickled) 

• 10cm ginger, peeled and 

chopped 

• 4 garlic cloves crushed 

• 2 red chillies deseeded 

• 30g bunch fresh coriander, 

stalks chopped, leaves 

reserved 

• 6 cardamom pods, seeds 

removed 

• 2 tbsp tomato puree 

• 2 tbsp brown sugar 

• 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 

• 2 tbsp ground cumin 

• 1 tbsp ground coriander 

• 2 tsp fennel seeds 

• ¼ tsp ground cloves 

• 1½ kg stewing beef steak - 

feather blade works well 


• 2 onions chopped 

• 200ml beef stock 

• 1 tbsp garam masala 

1Chop the beetroot into 

large chunks and in a food 

processor or blender, whizz 

one third of it with the ginger, 

garlic, chilli, coriander stalks, 

cardamom, tomato puree, 

brown sugar, cumin, ground 

coriander, fennel seeds, cloves 

and 2 tsp ground black pepper. 

2In a large pan, heat 2 

tbsp oil and colour the 

beef chunks in batches until 

browned all over. Set aside. 

3Add another tablespoon 

of oil to the pan and sauté 

your onions for 5 minutes 

before returning the beef to 

the pan with the spice paste 

and the balsamic vinegar.

4Add the curry to a simmer and 

cook in a low oven (130°C) 

or slow cooker for 4-8 hours. 

You could alternatively 

cook it at 160°C for 2-3 

hours but I think it works 

better cooked slow and low. 

Uncover the curry, add the

masala and return to the oven 

uncovered for 30 minutes.

Lancashire Hotpot 

Serves 4-6 Prep time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 6-8 hours in a 

slow cooker, low oven or Aga simmering oven. 

An old English classic. When I made this for my family and some 

friends of my boys, aged 9 and 12, it was devoured. 

• 1.5kg lamb neck fillet, 

cubed 


• 2 onions chopped 

• 2 carrots peeled and 

chopped 

• 3 bay leaves 

• 2 tbsp Worcestershire 

For the sauce 

• 100ml red wine (optional) 

• 500ml lamb or veg stock 

• 1½ tbsp plain flour 

• 800g potatoes peeled and 

sliced as thinly as you can 

• 2 tbsp butter melted 

1Soften the onions in a tbsp 

of oil for 5 minutes before 

adding the lamb, salt and 

pepper. 

2Colour on a high heat 

for 5-10 minutes before 

stirring in the flour. 

3Add the wine followed by 

the Worcestershire Sauce. 

Let it bubble for 2 minutes 

before adding the stock, carrots 

and bay. 

4Put in the oven at 130°C, 

a slow cooker, or Aga 

simmering oven for 6-8 hours. 

5Turn the oven up to 180°C 

and arrange your sliced 

potatoes on the top so that 

they overlap. Brush on the 

butter and bake for 45 minutes 

or until the potatoes are crisp 

on top. 

 


Wine+ 

An absolutely decadent dessert 

with salted caramel and cream 

requires a wine with at least as much 

sugar, if not more, otherwise the wine will 

taste sour. A fortified wine such as Madeira 

or Tawny Port would be great but for a 

real treat try the Campbells Rutherglen 

Muscat from Australia, Waitrose 

£12.99. Deep gold in colour 

with toasty raisin and honey 

flavours, it’s the perfect 

match. 

Gooey Chocolate Cups with Salted Caramel 

Sauce and Cream 

Serves 4 Prep time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 30 minutes. 

Gluten free, these easy peasy chocolate pots are made with no 

flour. The caramel sauce is worth making yourself if you have the 

time. If you don’t there are lots of salted caramel sauces available 

in supermarkets. 

• 4 eggs separated 

• 120g unsalted butter 

• 4 tbsp caster sugar 

• 250g 70% cocoa dark 

chocolate 

• 1 tsp vanilla extract 

• ½ tsp salt 

For the salted caramel sauce 

• 140g light brown sugar 

• 2 tbsp golden syrup 

• 50g butter 

• 300ml double cream 

• ½ tsp salt 

• Whipped cream or ice 

cream to serve 

For the salted caramel 

1In a heavy-bottomed pan 

heat the butter, brown sugar 

and golden syrup. Stir until 

everything has melted. 

2Once the mixture starts 

to bubble, add the double 

cream and simmer for 2 

minutes. 

3Stir in the salt and allow 

to cool slightly. 

For the chocolate cups 

4Grease 4 large ramekins 

or oven proof cups. 

5Whisk your egg whites 

until they form stiff 

peaks. Add 2 tbsp of caster 

sugar half a tablespoon at 

a time - counting to 20 in 

between until you have a 

glossy meringue mix. Set 

aside. 

6Melt the chocolate and 

butter in a bowl above 

a pan of simmering water 

(bain-marie). Once the 

butter and chocolate are 

melted stir in the remaining 

2 tbsp caster sugar. 

Now stir in the egg yolks, 

vanilla extract and salt. 

7Gently fold in the 

meringue mixture. Spoon 

the chocolate mixture into 

the cups or ramekins and 

bake for 25-30 minutes 

in an oven at 180°C .The 

pots should be gooey in the 

middle and like cake on the 

outside. 

8Add a dollop of whipped 

cream or ice cream and 

drizzle over some salted 

caramel.

The days are short, damp and dark, but Jo Arnell doesn’t

‘African Bride’ 

As soon as the last Christmas card is in the recycling, 

or even before, I am flicking through the seed 

catalogues. Every year I promise myself that I won’t 

buy so many, sow too many, won’t go too mad. After all, I 

have a good stash of home-collected seeds already - and not 

much time or space even for these. But I’m going to have to 

admit to you, right here on the page (imagine I’m standing at 

the back of a room somewhere) that I am totally addicted to 

seeds. 

I just love the magically simple act of sowing a few tiny 

grains and watching a plant (an actual plant!) burst from 

something minuscule and inert looking. It is so exciting. It 

isn’t always as easy as this though, and things can go wrong. 

If you have ever tried to grow something from seed and 

failed, take heart, because it probably wasn’t your fault. Seeds 

need to be triggered into germination. Most 

of the time annual seeds just need a bit of 

warmth and moisture (and sometimes light) 

to get going. Annual plants have but a short 

time to do their stuff, so are in a bit of a hurry. 

Perennials may take longer and some need to 

go through a period of winter before they will 

even think about germinating. 

What a seed needs 

Warmth - Plants have evolved over millennia to recognise 

when spring has arrived. Seeds are primed to germinate in 

the warmth, as this means that conditions for growth and the 

chances that they will make it to maturity, have improved. 

Some plants need more warmth than others, depending on 

where they have originated in the wild. Notice how a great 

rash of weeds pops up as soon as the weather outside starts 

to improve and take your cue that the conditions for sowing 

directly outside into the soil are just right. 

Moisture - Again this is a spring thing and to do with plants 

being in harmony with the seasons. Whether it’s a thaw in 

an alpine meadow, a rainy season, some April showers, or a 

dribble from your watering can, exposure to water will nudge 

plants into growth. 

Light - This is not always needed; seeds normally germinate 

under the ground and until they have grown a leaf containing 

chlorophyll, they cannot photosynthesise. Instead, they respire 

and therefore need oxygen more than light at the point of 

germination. Very quickly after this though, they do need 

light; bright and indirect, in order that their delicate new

leaves don’t scorch. Seedlings quickly become etiolated and 

leggy when it isn’t bright enough, so if you are growing them 

inside, a warm and bright north facing windowsill should be 

perfect. 

Soil - Because seeds need oxygen for germination, it is 

important that the compost is free-draining with lots of tiny 

air pockets. Seeds bring their own food with them (which 

is why we eat them), so ordinary ‘grown up’ compost may 

be too rich. Seed compost (available at most garden centres) 

has been specially formulated to be finer, and grittier and 

more suited to the needs of seeds and cuttings. As soon as the 

seedling grows its first pair of true leaves, it needs to be potted 

into a richer mix. 

Vernalisation (winter dormancy) - This is plants’ way of 

making sure that tender seedlings don’t start growing at 

the wrong time. It normally happens with 

perennials and woody plants. You may 

need to sow the seeds in the autumn and 

leave them outside in a sheltered place to 

go through winter, or cunningly put them 

through a fake winter in a bag of damp sand 

in the fridge for a bit in order to break their 

dormancy. Seed sowing instructions should 

be provided by the producer, so do not use this method 

unless it is indicated – or if all else has failed. Do warn your 

family too; it’s annoying if they discover and disturb (and 

possibly tip away) the contents of the mystery package… 

Direct sowing versus sowing under cover 

It’s easy - and very tempting - to empty the packets into your 

hand or pocket and go scattering seed around the place. After 

all, this is what the plants themselves do and if you like the 

self-sown, slightly random and natural look, then this could 

be the method for you. 

The problem comes when the seeds start germinating, 

because they usually do this at the same time as all those 

other random self-seeders – the weeds. But if you are sowing 

vegetables it pays to grow them in neat rows, as you can then 

hoe in between the rows and keep the weeds to a minimum. 

There is also a neat trick, which involves preparing 

the soil, waiting for a couple of weeks until the weeds 

pop up, then hoeing them off – without disturbing the 

surface too much. You can then sow your seed into the 

clean soil. The same method can be used in the borders 

with annual flower seeds, but here you can vary

the shapes; rigid rows of flowers are great for a cutting 

garden, but less natural looking in a mixed border. 

Sowing under cover and then pricking out and potting 

on seedlings is a time-consuming task, it’s true, but it 

will give you ultimate control over where exactly your 

plants are to grow. The other big advantage – and this 

is the reason I tend to favour it – is that you can protect 

your tiny plants from the ravages of the unpredictable 

spring weather and worse: attack from pests. 

Tender plants 

If started off early these must be sown indoors and will 

need bottom heat for good results. You can buy an 

electric propagator with a clear plastic lid to keep the 

plants in their own mini greenhouse environment. A 

warm window sill might just do the job, but watch out 

that your babies don’t scorch in the early spring sunshine. 

The advantage of sowing early is that you’ll be able to 

get a head start on the season and have a display of 

flowers or a crop of vegetables earlier in the season. 

Tomatoes, for instance, need a long growing 

period in which to grow and ripen their fruit. 

Our summers aren’t always as long as the one we 

experienced last year, so the earlier they are sown, 

the earlier you will be picking ripe tomatoes. 

To extend the flowering season, I often sow two 

lots of annual flowers like Cosmos and Nicotiana; one 

under cover in late winter and then another, directly 

into the borders once the soil has warmed up in April. 

There can still be frosts until May though, so watch the 

weather forecast before putting tender plants outside. 

Hardening off 

This is a process that entails gradually accustoming your 

sensitive seedlings to life outside in the garden. Start by 

putting them out for a few hours each day, bringing them 

in as the temperatures drop in the evening. Cold frames 

and cloches are a useful half-way house, being sheltered, 

but unheated. After a week or so the plants can be left out 

and then planted in their permanent positions. If they are 

shoved outside unceremoniously, they may, like some of 

us, get a hard shock and then fail to thrive, or worse… 

Vegetables 

We are not necessarily growing vegetables to save money. 

As my father-in-law points out, a cabbage at the shops 

is only 50p (and has less caterpillars in it), but there 

is immense satisfaction in growing something from

scratch, perhaps an otherwise expensive crop that is hard 

to find in the shops, a weird and wonderful blue potato, 

or deliciously unusual variety of kale. Who wouldn’t want 

to grow a tomato called ‘Black Krim’, or a leek named 

‘Gladiator’? Last year I grew a fantastic variety of Swiss 

chard called ‘Pink Flamingo’ which had shocking pink 

stems. Nobody wanted to eat any, but I was extraordinarily 

proud of the plants and they looked gorgeous. 

One of the other great things about growing 

vegetables from seed is that most of them are annuals, 

so are raring to grow and will germinate almost as 

soon as you open the packet. If you buy F1 hybrids, 

they have been bred to be reliable and uniform - to do 

exactly what it says they’ll do on back of the pack. 

On the other hand, heritage or heirloom varieties are 

those that have been bred down through the generations 

for their unique characteristics. These are more likely 

to have been cultivated for their flavour and may look 

less tidy and regular, but will probably taste amazing. 

You can also collect the seeds of heirloom veg to sow 

again next year. Do not bother to collect the offspring 

of F1 types though, because the next generation will 

revert back to another previous, less desirable strain. 

It’s still too early and too cold to start sowing much 

this month, but we can be making plans (it’s what 

keeps me going in these cold, dark days). Let’s stay in 

the warm, peruse the sumptuous seed catalogues and 

dream of the spring. It will be here before we know it.

Sport outside the box 

Not all kids love the classic team and gender-assigned games, so forward-thinking schools are 

introducing different activities to inspire a lifelong love of exercise 

Football is a big deal at Bede’s – and their 

most successful team is the Ladies’ First XI 

Bede’s has a national reputation for footballing 

excellence, with regular county, regional and national 

titles for the school’s teams and many pupils work 

as part of premiership academy sides, from Chelsea and 

Charlton Athletic to local side Brighton & Hove Albion, with 

whom Bede’s has a development partnership. 

But while Bede’s boys won the U18 English Schools 

Football Association Cup competition in 2009, the school’s 

current highest achieving side is its Ladies 1st XI, who last 

summer became U18 English School Champions. 

“Girls’ football at Bede’s has been on a real journey,” 

explained Bede’s Director of Sport, David Byrne. 

“Traditionally, independent schools are so-called ‘rugby 

schools’ and Bede’s is already an outlier for putting football to 

front and centre. 

“While for years we supported having girls playing within 

our boys’ sides where possible, we didn’t have a dedicated 

girls’ football programme. But the demand was there and 

Bede’s is a school where pupil voice really carries. The girls 

said they wanted a football programme, so we built one.” 

Starting in earnest under the leadership of Bede’s Director 

of Football David Caryer and in tandem with outreach 

coaching 

assistance from 

Brighton & Hove Albion, Bede’s Ladies enjoyed 

early successes, with girls earning county, regional and 

national caps, and in some cases signing to professional clubs 

including Chelsea, but silverware was somewhat evasive. 

That was, of course, until last summer, when the Bede’s 

Ladies won the ISFA U18 National Cup. “I think that one 

of the best things about the side that won the competition 

is that not every girl in that team considers themselves to be 

seriously sporty,” Mr Byrne continues. “For some of them, a 

career in professional sport is undeniably likely, but for many 

more they only really started to play for the team because I or 

another member of staff encouraged them to give it a go. 

“Even now, some of them don’t seem to understand the 

gravity of having won a national championship. They just 

want to play, and I’m honestly prouder of that than 

anything else.”

Children are taller and heavier than they used to be – 

but they are also weaker and less fit than they were 16 

years ago, according to a British study, published in the 

Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport. 

The researchers found they scored worse in tests including 

sit-ups and grip strength and the decline has been speeding up. 

There had been a 20% decrease in absolute muscle strength and 

a 30% decrease in muscle endurance over the 16-year period 

studied. 

“Inactive lifestyles are a health risk, but physical fitness is the 

single best measure of health in childhood, adolescence and 

on into adulthood,” said Dr Sandercock, who led the research. 

“Poor fitness and inactivity lead to multiple health problems in 

their adult life.” 

Dr Sandercock said the current concept of a ‘healthy weight’ 

was misleading and that using Body Mass Index (BMI) in 

isolation was not an effective way to monitor health. Of the 

children studied, 80% had a normal BMI, but one in three of 

those was found to be unfit. 

At Hampton Court House, we are embarking on a 

programme specifically designed to increase strength in our 

pupils – introducing safe-lifting technique as part of the 

curriculum, progressing to teaching Olympic Weightlifting. 

Strength is a key foundation for an active life and we will 

provide that foundation. 

Hampton Court House’s sporting philosophy centres upon 

our pupils’ finding sports or activities they can be passionate 

about for life, because a physically active lifestyle will only 

happen as a result of each child’s discovery of joy in their sport 

of choice. This is our overall goal, but strength is our first 

priority in terms of physical development. 

The idea of young children lifting weights is still 

controversial, with claims that lifting weights at an early age will 

lead to stunted growth, fractured growth plates and inflexibility 

as a result of becoming ‘musclebound’. 

But none of these fears are borne out by the evidence: with 

good coaching and qualified supervision there is actually a very 

low risk of injury to children who participate in weight training 

– in fact it is considerably lower than those of many of the 

traditional team sports that are commonplace in our schools. 

Injuries that were sustained by children while weight 

training generally come down 

to one factor: poor supervision.

increases the chances of ‘horseplay’ in 

the weight room; not surprisingly, the 

most common injuries to children in 

the weight room are a result of dropping 

weights on their own hands and feet. 

Many parents still fear that lifting weights 

at an early age will stunt a child’s growth; 

there has never been any scientific evidence 

that youth weight training is harmful to the 

normal growth and development process, 

but in fact youth weightlifters commonly 

display higher than average bone density. 

Weight training also helps young athletes 

develop strength. After a two-year study, 

researchers compared the strength of children 

who had lifted weights to those of the same 

age who had participated only in games. 

Those in the weightlifting group had gained 

significant strength compared to the others, 

without any reports of significant injury. 

Youth athletes who lift weights are also 

less likely to sustain injuries in other sports 

in which they participate and they also 

recover from injuries faster when compared 

to teammates who don’t lift weights. 

There’s much more to gain from school sports than winning

new attitude 

Hilary Wilce suggests the month of highminded 

resolutions is a good time to talk 

to children about their aspirations 

It’s the start of the New Year – but not in schools. 

There the new start comes in September, when hopes 

and intentions and expectations are all sky high. In 

schools, January is a time for settling into the long slog 

towards exams and the distant summer holidays. 

But that doesn’t mean teachers and parents can’t have New 

Year resolutions and if I could wind the clock back to when 

my children were young I would resolve to do everything in 

my power to make them see that they can change the world. 

In fact I know two women who have done exactly that. 

One went to Africa as a post-graduate student, wondered 

why there were so few girls in schools and twenty-five years 

later has helped put more than two and a half million girls 

through school, creating a vibrant, pan-African alumni 

network of more than quarter of a million educated young 

women, all now helping each other to become professionals, 

set up businesses and serve and change their communities. 

A second young woman felt so sorry for refugees 

suffering through winter in the Calais ‘jungle’ that she 

started collecting winter clothes for them. Three years 

later she is running a leading refugee charity, supporting 

refugees throughout Europe and the Middle East and 

called in by governments and international agencies to 

advise how they can best respond to the migrant crisis. 

But you don’t have to be this focused and philanthropic 

to change the world. I would want to tell my children that 

everything they say and do can have influence. In fact, I 

would turn that thought around and say to them that nothing 

they say or do is without some sort of impact in the world. 

Everything leaves a ripple. Every smile and frown. Every 

kind act and moment of bad temper. What do you want your 

ripples to be like? And, remember, you always have a choice. 

There’s no law that says you have to shout at your brother, 

or do a skimpy job on your maths homework, or drop wet 

towels on the bathroom floor for someone else to pick up. 

In fact, starting today, you could begin to make 

some changes. Not because you have to, but because 

you want to. You could become someone who 

willingly takes their turn looking after the family 

dog, or who aims to solve problems among friends 

rather than relishing all the fights and arguments. 

And this goes on and on, all the way through life. You 

could, I would tell them, grow up to do an ordinary job, or 

be a person who decides to always do their job to the very 

best of their abilities. You could grow up to do nothing but 

hang out on social media in your spare time, or commit 

to do some volunteering and be willing to help others. 

And deciding to be this sort of person, I would tell them, is 

almost bound to make you happy – as the Chinese proverb so 

succinctly puts it, “If you always give, you will always have.” 

Of course, childhood is often a selfish time 

and none of us are saints. But it’s the intention 

that’s the important part of this. 

So if my children were young again, I would say to them 

at the start of this new calendar year : at very least think 

about what you’re doing, what you’re saying, and how 

you’re behaving. Is this how you want to be in the world? 

Are these the ripples you want to create? And, if not, how 

do you think you could start to change them? And – 

most importantly – is there anything I can do to help?

One of the toughest things about a separation is making 

those crucial decisions about children, from where they’ll 

live to how often they’ll see each parent. 

If you’ve recently separated or are going through a 

divorce - there are certain very important things you 

need to consider. 

Choose a Family law expert 

Navigating children’s issues can be tricky to say the 

least, so choose family law solicitors who are known 

for their work in divorce cases involving children. 

Three major Issues to consider 

There are three major issues to decide when it comes 

to child arrangements after separation. 

• Where children will live 

• How both parents will continue to pay for all the 

things the children need 

• How you’ll ensure that children spend enough time 

with both parents and, crucially, when and where 

this will happen. 

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to answering these 

important questions, and there are likely to be many 

other smaller issues to decide too. However, these three 

considerations are an excellent starting point. Our family 

law solicitors know that sorting out child arrangements 

can seem incredibly daunting and confusing at the start, 

but getting clear plans in place for these three things will 

give you a very strong foundation. 

Consider Mediation 

Not all couples agree on every matter relating to child 

arrangements following divorce - in fact, you may 

completely disagree. However, it’s important to realise 

that even if you have very different opinions about what 

should happen, there’s no immediate need to rush into 

fighting it out in a courtroom. 

Many family law solicitors, including some of the 

Slater and Gordon team, are members of an organisation 

known as Resolution, which aims to find alternatives to 

litigation (legal action) to resolve family disputes. 

Resolution champions non-confrontational methods 

of resolving issues, which include mediation. Mediation 

provides a safe, calm and measured space in which to 

address conflict and try to see things from the other 

person’s perspective. It can help to clarify what’s really 

in the best interests of your children, and what views 

and opinions are borne out of a testing and emotional 

time in both of your lives. 

Child Arrangements Order from the court 

If you and your former partner can’t agree on the best 

arrangements for your children after you separate, 

you may need a court to step in. Family law solicitors 

will usually recommend that you try mediation and 

constructive negotiation techniques to find a resolution 

to the dispute, but this doesn’t work in every case. 

In situations like this, you might need to get a Child 

Arrangements Order. Applied for by either parent, the 

first stage of the process involves a court attempting to 

encourage the parents to reconsider whether they can 

reach an agreement outside of the courtroom. If not, 

further hearings are scheduled, witnesses called and 

the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support 

Service (commonly known as CAFCASS) may also 

be called upon to relay the child’s views to the court. 

A decision will be arrived at stipulating certain 

conditions about child arrangements for your family.

The shameless dodging of unscrupulous international corporations and high-profile 

individuals have given tax planning a bad rep – but done correctly it’s ethical and sensible

Attitudes towards ‘acceptable’ 

tax planning have changed 

dramatically over the past 

decade. Both legal and social 

standards have shifted and with 

them our expectations of good 

practice. Think of the reputational 

damage to certain corporations (Amazon and Starbucks spring 

to mind) and to high profile individuals named and shamed 

for taking questionable actions to minimise tax bills. 

The government continues to introduce increasingly strict 

anti-avoidance rules. ‘DOTAS’ (disclosure of tax avoidance 

schemes), for instance, requires certain advantageous tax 

arrangements to be logged with HMRC, allowing it to keep 

tabs on perceived loopholes being exploited. 

The GAAR (general anti avoidance regulations) are 

designed to limit avoidance opportunities available. This 

clampdown, coupled with media incrimination of tax 

avoidance, has created significant social stigma around 

legitimate tax planning. 

There are still many tax-planning opportunities using tax 

breaks that allow the taxpayer to remain within the legal 

tax-paying remit. Confusion over what is and what is not 

acceptable when it comes to tax planning can be addressed 

with professional advice; tax experts can help you to make the 

most of the planning opportunities available whilst ensuring 

that your position is both honest and protected. 

Inheritance tax is a common subject for counsel. An 

especially divisive and emotive issue, inheritance tax is 

becoming increasingly problematic as high house prices in 

the South East lead to a rise in family assets. Houses often 

represent a large proportion of an individual’s wealth and 

children find they are forced to sell their parents’ home in 

order to pay the tax bills on the deaths of their parents. 

Some of the numerous ‘vanilla’ tax-planning tools, widely 

regarded as an acceptable means of protecting assets, are 

outlined below. These include inheritance tax-planning ideas 

as well as some capital gains planning. 

Lifetime gifts which carry no inheritance tax implications 

There are a number of gifts which can be made annually 

during lifetime without any inheritance tax implications after 

death. These include an annual exemption of £3,000 per 

donor; gifts made out of surplus income; gifts on marriage; 

and unlimited small gifts of up to £250. 

Gifts to charity 

Gifts to charity are exempt from inheritance tax and there is a 

further benefit. If 10% or more of an estate is left to charity, 

then all non-exempt gifts are taxed at 36% instead of the 

standard 40%. The idea is to encourage individuals to leave 

money to charity. However, it does not apply to all charities 

globally and so specific advice should be sought. 

Spouse exemption 

If a couple is married or in a civil partnership, often the ‘bite’ 

of inheritance tax is only felt on the death of the second 

party. This is because married or civil partnership couples 

qualify for a ‘spousal exemption’, meaning that anything can 

pass between couples without

From a capital gains perspective, to encourage 

entrepreneurs, each individual has a potential £10 million 

of gains which can be taxed at 10% rather than the 

standard 18% or 28%. 

To qualify for this, certain criteria must be met; the 

applicant must be, and have been, a director, officer or 

employee of the company for at least one year (two years 

from April 2019), they must hold at least 5% of ordinary 

shares in the company and the company must be a trading 

company. 

Finally, timing. Many wait until retirement to consider 

planning of this kind. However, regardless of age, if you 

have children or other dependents it is important to 

consider the future sooner rather than later. 

By seeking professional advice, you can clarify how to 

maximise your assets both during your lifetime and for 

your family further down the road while also avoiding 

the pitfalls of aggressive tax planning which may be 

unacceptable to HMRC.

Surviving the Holidays 

Specialist divorce and family lawyer Jessica May of Peters May answers your 

questions ahead of the festive season. 

Q. If you are divorced or separated how do you sort the arrangements for the 

children over the holiday period? 

A. This can be a particularly stressful time if you are divorced or separated 

and you need to agree the arrangements for the children. How much time 

should the children spend with each of you? What if one parent wants to 

travel abroad with the children over Christmas? Try and agree the 

arrangements concerning the children early. Don’t leave it until December. 

It is far better to sort out disputes directly with your former partner and 

reach an acceptable agreement. Try and have a parenting plan and go 

through your respective diaries to see what is fair and what works for all 

of you. There is no formula or one size fits all. 

What do the children want? If you simply can’t agree then you might 

need professional help such as mediation, assistance from a solicitor 

or even from the court. A parenting plan in the form of an annual 

diary, with the children and each adult knowing where the children are 

over each holiday for the next year works well. Each parent will need 

to compromise and put the interests of the children first. If a parent 

wishes to take the children abroad they need the consent of each 

person with parental responsibility, usually the other parent. If this 

is not given, they need the permission of the court. A very standard 

arrangement at this time of year is alternating Christmas Day each 

year between parents. Try and agree your contact arrangements 

a year ahead, probably every December for the following year but 

recognise that both parents need to be flexible and sometimes 

contact dates have to be changed on both sides. 

Q. I have decided to get divorced in the New Year. What do I do? 

A. Often people do not want to upset the home over the 

festive season even if they are very unhappy. However, 

once the holidays are over there are an increased 

number of divorce petitions filed at court. Things to do if 

you have sadly decided that there is no way forward 

with your marriage: 

• Find your marriage certificate. You will need that. 

• Take some time to make sure this is what you want. 

• Get some initial advice from a specialist family 

solicitor so that you know your rights, find out 

what a court would do and find how much it 

will cost you to get a divorce. 

• Discuss your options with your solicitor. You 

might need to see several solicitors before 

you find one that is right for you. 

• Gather your financial documents. 

• Develop your support network to help 

you through a difficult time.

Fables from 

the Farm 

It’s calving time and Jane is wondering if 

she will get any sleep 

So that was Christmas. I love it, especially the 

anticipation, but come Boxing Day I’m done and 

looking forward to the New Year and whatever joys and 

challenges that might bring. 

One thing for definite will be the patter of tiny hooves 

in the cowshed. Gorgeous George, our Sussex bull, spent 

most of last winter in splendid bachelor isolation, but in 

early April we let him in with his girls and nine months later 

we’re looking forward to the consequences. It’s a very special 

time and after twenty years still every bit as awesome and 

incredible to witness. 

However leading up to the birth there’s always a lot of 

uneventful watching and waiting – maximum observation, 

minimum intervention is the mantra - and the prospect of 

leaving a warm cosy bed to pad down to the cowshed to 

confirm that nothing is happening is not such an exciting 

prospect. But it seems that technology might have ridden to 

my rescue with the MooCall. 

In the days leading up to calving there are 

quite a few clues from the cow that she’s going 

to calve soon. Her udder starts ‘bagging up’, 

filling with milk and becoming firm rather 

than floppy. Her shape also changes. As the 

pelvic bones relax it has the effect of making 

it look like her tail head is rising up above her 

backbone to become far more prominent. 

As it gets closer still she will likely move away from the herd 

and find her own quiet corner. But when her labour actually 

starts, it goes without saying there is much discomfort and 

subsequent swishing of her tail. This is where the MooCall, a 

fag-packet-sized monitor, comes in. You strap it to the cow’s

tail and it monitors this increase in tail swishing and phones 

you up! How bloomin’ brilliant is that? 

So in this imagined tech-savvy world I shall now sleep 

soundly ariving just in time to safely

And that’s very important because the calf

This special milk is full of the mother’s 

antibodies, which the calf can only absorb for a short time 

and they play a vital role in boosting the calf’s pretty limited 

immunity. 

But sometimes it doesn’t go according to plan. Especially 

for first-time mothers, after pushing out a 30kg calf they are 

sometimes startled, cross and not the least bit enthusiastic 

about the prospect of motherhood. So then you have to tether 

mum, give her a bucket of food (of far more interest than the 

calf) and encourage the small, slippery calf to stand, find the 

udder, latch on and suck. And not get kicked in the process. 

A good trick is to squirt some warm milk over the calf’s 

nose and ideally into its mouth – along the lines of a wake up 

and smell the coffee message. However it’s easy to mis-direct 

the squirt and end up with a faceful of warm colostrum which 

is incredibly sticky and hard to wash off. Never mind, helping 

an animal give birth is a wonderful experience and somehow I 

think I will still be getting up every night to enjoy it even if I 

do buy a MooCall.
