COLLINSON CUSTOM BUILDING presents
KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
FOCUS SHIFTS FROM TRADES TO DEVELOPMENT
WITH TRADING DONE FOR THE YEAR, FRONTS WILL LOOK TO IMPROVE TOGETHER
T
he trade deadline came and went on Thursday afternoon
meaning OHL team rosters are set for the
remainder of the season. The Frontenacs were quiet
around the deadline because most of the wheeling and
dealing had already been done. Kingston was easily one
of the busiest teams over the course of the season as they
started to put pieces in place to develop for the future.
Since training camp began in September the Frontenacs
have acquired Dawson Baker, Cameron Hough,
Lucas Rowe, Ian Martin, Dennis Golovatchev, Anthony
Aguanno, Adrien Beraldo, Billy Constantinou, Marshall
Frappier and, most recently, Nick Wong. The team also
increased their draft pick total by 8 picks.
Nick Wong became the newest Frontenacs member
last Saturday when Darren Keily sent Brett Neumann to
the Oshawa Generals for Wong and 3 draft picks. Wong
is a talented offensive player who scored 17 goals in his
rookie season. He will likely see plenty of time on the top
line, as well as the power play over the final third of the
regular season.
Tonight, Kingston will face the North Bay Battalion, a
team that was fairly quiet around the trade deadline. The
biggest piece in question for North Bay was their Captain,
Justin Brazeau. After many rumours about what might be
done with him, the Battalion elected to hang on to their
Captain, perhaps because of their recent success. Entering
the weekend, North Bay had collected 17 of 18 possible
points in their last 9 games vaulting them up to sixth
in the Eastern Conference. As of Thursday, they sat just
4 points behind Sudbury and Peterborough in a battle for
home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.
The season series has been a home team affair so
far. Both teams won their only chance to host the other
so far this year. Goals have been coming in bunches in
those games. In just two head to head matchups there
has been 24 goals scored between the two teams. Kingston
has had a lot of success against North Bay at Leon’s
Centre. The Frontenacs have won 9 of 11 visits since the
Battalion moved from Brampton to North Bay. KF
Nick Wong hasn’t spent a ton of time in the OHL,
but he has already become an important piece
of the Kingston Frontenacs roster. The talented,
young forward went from being a middle of the lineup
player in Oshawa to a top line regular on young
Kingston team. It’s a big change for a young player,
but one that the Kingston Frontenacs think he can
handle.
Nick is from Erin, ON, a small town northwest
a regular power play shift playing on the point with
Jakob Brahaney. He recorded his first point as a
member of the Frontenacs on their first goal of the
game scored by Ian Derungs.
Nick Wong had played one game for Kingston
entering the weekend but had already become a hot
topic amongst fans. His ability to score and make
plays was the spark plug fans were looking for to
be in the lineup for the next few seasons. Expect to
of Toronto. He is a minor hockey product of the
Mississauga Senators. He finished second on his
team in scoring with 29 points during the 2016-
17 season, just one point off the team lead held
by Anthony Tabak who was drafted by the Sudbury
Wolves.
It was the Oshawa Generals who called Nick’s
name on draft day selecting him in the second
round of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection. He
stepped into Oshawa’s lineup on opening night and
went on to record an impressive 17 goals and 26
points throughout his rookie year. He was putting
together a solid start to his second year in Oshawa
as well, scoring 5 goals and 10 points in 37 games
before the Kingston Frontenacs came calling.
On January 5th, Kingston acquired Nick Wong
and 3 draft picks from Oshawa for Brett Neumann.
Nick immediately traveled down the 401 to Kingston
and joined the Frontenacs lineup the following day
against the Barrie Colts.
Without having stepped on the ice for a practice
with his new teammates, Wong played top line
minutes in his Black and Gold debut. He even took
hear Nick Wong’s name following a Frontenacs goal
many times in the future. KF
