If there was ever a library
cheerleader, White Oak
Library District Lockport
Branch Manager Pat Jarog
would be it.
Wearing a STEM T-shirt
during a recent library event,
Jarog expressed her excitement
about the upcoming
year at the library.
“I can talk all day about
what we have here,” Jarog
said with a laugh. “Residents
at the Lockport branch can
look forward to another fabulous
Comicopolis coming
up on July 27 of this year.
This is the fifth annual pop
Jarog discusses the programs that are to be offered this
year at the library. Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
culture festival, which is our
biggest event of the year.”
Comicopolis, an all-day
event, is created and produced
by the White Oak Library
District in partnership
with Zombie Army Productions,
Lockport Summer Art
Series and Amazing Fantasy
Books & Comics.
“We’re working very
closely with the Lockport
Summer Art series to bring
more people into downtown
Lockport,” Jarog said. “Half
of the people that attend are
from the Lockport area and
the other half are from other
areas. We bring in pop culture
and comic vendors to
the library. They talk to the
visitors what it’s like to be
part of the whole comic industry.”
About 1,000 people attend
the Comicopolis event each
year, according to Jarog.
This year, the White Oak
Library District is to be expanding
the number of artists
featured there as well.
The event features several
day long activities including;
Legacy Adventure Park
games, bouncy moon jumps,
food trucks, live music, retro
gaming, face painting, giant
Jenga and more.
“A huge part for Comicopolis
is dressing up,” Jarog
said. “If you do want to dress
up, this is a venue to do that
along with a cosplay contest
with cash prizes. For the first
500 people they get swag
bags filled with all kinds of
goodies such a comic books,
book marks and more.”
For those who don’t get
into the pop culture festival,
there is a wide variety of
additional programs at the
library. In a typical week,
there are adult programs
such as Excel, Grown Up
Game night, Creative Writing
Group and others, in addition
to a brand new event
starting up next month.
“If [Comicopolis] doesn’t
appeal to you, there are plenty
of other things going on,”
Jarog said. “New this year
we are starting an author
tour. We’ve invited author’s
to our libraries which include
Crest Hill, Romeoville
and Lockport. We are having
these author events every
other month starting on Feb.
22 at the Lockport Branch.”
On that Friday, William
Hazelgrove is to speak about
his latest book, “Wright
Brothers, Wrong Story.”
There will be a Q&A followed
by a book signing
along with refreshments.
“As book stores are closing
down, we wanted to focus
on authors,” Jarog said.
“We have made a commitment
to have six authors a
year at the White Oak Library
District. We are hoping
this inspires local people to
do their own writing.”
As one walks into the
adult section of White Oak
Library in Lockport, the
faces of Prince Harry and
Duchess Megan peek out
from a book cover.
“We have decided to feature
themes each month as
well,” Jarog explained. “In
January, our theme is the
British Royals. If you love
the British Royals, you can
go branch to branch getting
your fill of them.”
Besides reading books
about the British Royals,
White Oak Library District
has events at each branch
such as various tea events,
movies and Royal trivia for
the month of January. Starting
in February, the Great
Read is to take place.
“The Great Read is what
we do every year,” Jarog
said. “It’s a partnership
program we do with other
libraries. This year’s theme
is the ‘Wonderful Wizard of
Oz.’”
For March, the third annual
STEM Fest is to take
place on March 2 at the Romeoville
Branch Library.
“We have a lot going on
here and it’s all free,” Jarog
said. “There are many
people taking advantage of
our programs, if there is one
message I would like to get
across. People who come
and take part in these programs
keep coming back because
they know they have a
great resource at the library.”
For more information
about the library’s programs
and to register online, visit
www.whiteoaklibrary.org.
There are also program
guides at the adult service
desk that can be picked up
at the library located at 121
E. 8th St. in Lockport. For
