Coach Talk
Meeting Glenview’s gold-star coach
Jon ‘Coach’ Cohn
Contributing Columnist
Glenview Resident
I
have been around
some great coaches
over the years. I’ve
observed them, coached
with them, coached
against them and been a
parent with my kid playing
for them.
I even officiated some
of their games; pretty
much the whole spectrum.
I couldn’t tell you a lick
about car repairs, kitchen
utensils, art, social media,
Hulu or any other streaming
devices, and what’s
worse, “Alexa” won’t
even talk to me.
But coaching? Oh yeah,
I can spot when I see ‘em.
Absolutely one of the
Loyola
From Page 29
sixth game and he came
through in the clutch.
“I did not know that and
I made sure my teammates
did not tell me,” the senior
said. “I was hoping for the
best. It’s always the same
mentality. One ball at a
time and then move on to
the next.
“In the last game the
lanes were drying out a
best I have been around
is right here in Glenview:
Junior Titan basketball
coach Donnell Thomas.
He has coached feeder
travel teams in the program
for 12 years now,
and he’s worked with
many Glenview youngsters
through his involvement
with Hi 5 Sports,
and Jr. NBA.
Thomas is truly the full
package. He is caring,
knowledgeable, competitive,
disciplined, funny,
spirited, with an ability to
explain and breakdown
skills making even the
difficult seem doable.
To top it off, he goes far
beyond the game, giving
youngsters under his tutelage
life lessons that go
well beyond the playing
field.
Some coaches do a
few of the above, very
few do it all. Thomas’
wisdom can benefit not
only the young player, but
the adults that parent and
coach them as well.
I talked to him recently
little bit, and I left three of
the first four frames open. I
had to switch balls.”
Kuper’s best game was
the fourth in which he
left only the second frame
open. The rest of the way
he had nothing but strikes.
Paterkiewicz made his
regional debut after bowling
for the Spartans junior
varsity last year. His
scores were 246, 171, 246,
206, 171 and 231.
The junior said his 211
to dig a little deeper into
his expertise.
Coach: You are a big
man Donnell (he’s 6-foot-
6 with weight undisclosed).
I assume you
played basketball back in
the day. Give us a quick
background.
Thomas: I played at
Robeson High School (he
was All-State), then at
Northern Illinois University
(he is in the Huskies
Athletic Hall of Fame)
and then played overseas
for 12 years.
Coach: Any NBA
looks?
Thomas: A small
flicker.
average for six games was
the highest of his career.
“I’ve been improving
and so has everybody else
on the team,” Paterkiewicz
added. “It doesn’t stop. In
practice this week we put
ourselves in a position to
do well.”
Also coming on strong
for the Spartans was another
junior, Eliot Kang, who
recorded games of 202,
219, 182, 201, 203 and 221
for a 1228 total that enabled
Coach: What are some
of your main coaching
philosophies?
Thomas: I teach them
right from the beginning
that you have to act like
young men or young
women. Be responsible,
be a good teammate. Treat
people with respect and
play with great sportsmanship.
Encourage each
other and don’t be afraid
to be challenged.
Coach: What is your
biggest point of emphasis?
Thomas: Enjoy the process;
have fun. If you can
make it fun for them while
they are learning, that is
the single biggest thing a
coach can achieve.
Coach: What would be
one piece of advice you
would give to other youth
coaches or parents with
kids in sports?
Thomas: Don’t restrict
the talent. “Turn them
loose.” In other words, too
many coaches have too
many rules and set plays
that the kids have to follow.
Teach them of course,
but on gameday, let the
horse out of the barn and
let ‘em run.
Coach: You have had
opportunities to coach
in high school and even
college. Why have you
passed them up to stay
teaching younger kids
him to finish fifth overall.
“We did very well and
we could have done better,”
GBN coach Todd Rubin
said. “We put our goal
(as a team) around 6,000
and we fell a little (51 pins)
short. The guys adjusted
well to the conditions and
took home the Regional
championship. We took
the first step to our goal
which is to make it to the
second day of state.
“We’re eight deep and
here in Glenview and on
the North Shore?
Thomas: One, because
when I was young, I didn’t
have anyone to help me.
I had no youth coaches.
here were no programs like
we have here in Glenview.
So, I wanted to give that
back. Two, I really enjoy
watching young kids develop
their game. Watching
a kid hit his first three
pointer, or make a pass
we have been working on,
and seeing the smile on
their face? It makes it all
worthwhile.
Coach: How long you
plan to keep coaching?
Thomas: I plan on being
here for a while.
Coach: Good answer.
No better way to end this
interview.
Cohn has been a coach,
physical education teacher,
sports announcer and
athletic supervisor in the
community for over 35 years.
He can be reached at jcsportsandtees@aol.com.
I made some substitutions
who stepped up. It’s nice
to have the ability to make
changes and these guys are
supportive of each other.”
The GBN alternates
making the biggest impacts
were Robbie Weiland,
who bowled games
two through five and had
scores of 210, 188, 195
and 181, and fellow senior
Tibor Klein, who had a
173 in the first game and a
227 in the last game.
