May I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year. 

I would also like to welcome Tim Paul of Domino 

Printing Sciences, who was appointed as the new 

chairman of the PPMA Group of Associations last December. 

At the time of writing, there is a still an incredible amount 

of uncertainty regarding the UK’s economic future. The whole 

Brexit issue is particularly poignant to producers of highly 

perishable goods such as fresh produce which is the special 

feature in this issue (starts on page 36). This is for two reasons: 

firstly, the logistics of goods across borders is critical and there 

is also the significant reduction of low-cost labour to consider, 

which of course creates several immediate challenges. 

Whatever the EU deal, our 

country is at a critical point in its 

future industrial development 

It does also create longer-term opportunities for UK food 

manufacturers to invest more in automation and robotics to take 

their businesses forward. Indeed, at the inaugural Future Robotics 

event at Warwick University at the end of last year, MP Matt 

Western talked about how vital it now is for UK manufacturers 

to take another look at robotics to increase their productivity in 

a post-Brexit world - whatever the outcome (see pages 12 and 13). 

Both should be considered as part of a longer-term 

investment strategy to ensure that the business’ manufacturing 

environment is not only as efficient and competitive as other 

companies, but other countries too. 

With the precarious situation that all UK companies now 

find themselves, the advent of potentially a ‘no deal’ or trade 

agreement, business owners’ hands may be forced due to the 

labour market. In some cases, the narrative is increasingly 

becoming: invest now, or your business may be at risk. 

This resonates with chairman of Warburtons Jonathan 

Warburton’s interview at the PPMA Show last September, from 

which he said: “what gets you here (today) might not necessary 

get you there (tomorrow), which is why, I would argue, 

every business should constantly be open to re-evaluate its 

business strategy and processes.

we will continue to do, irrespective of whether we leave or, 

unwittingly, remain in the EU. We will continue to invest

held in the United States, this 

marks the first such summit 

to be held outside those 

shores. The event welcomes

who convene for the purpose 

of defining a comprehensive 

set of standards that help 

govern the production and 

performance of mobile 

robotics around the world. 

The event marks the eighth 

F45 summit, which is held 

bi-annually to continue 

defining performance 

standards for industrial 

mobile robots, as well as 

standardised measurement 

techniques to characterise 

system performance and 

to compare different systems 

to tasks at hand. 

Using top leaders in 

the field, the group also 

determines industry essentials 

such as standard terminology 

and testing methodology.


Chairman’s lunch 

delivered digital

The PPMA Group of Associations 

Chairman’s Lunch was held 

in December and saw PPMA 

members gather at the Tower 

of London to learn more about 

maximising digital visibility. 

Over 100 members attended 

the event which saw experts 

on LinkedIn, Google and search 

advertising share insights with 

the attendees. 

PPMA ceo Andrew Mint also 

gave an update on the association 

which now boasts more than 

550 members. During 2018, 

the association held the largest 

PPMA Show ever run, published 

the largest issue of Machinery 

Update and gave the go ahead for 

a PPMA Training Academy. 

He also talked about the inaugural 

PPMA conference that will 

take place on 23 May this year. 

The presentations went down well 

UK companies enjoy a 

successful Dubai show 

Gulfood Manufacturing 

took place in Dubai last 

November and saw the 

UK Pavilion, co-ordinated 

by the PPMA Group, contain 17 

members and 10 non-member 

companies on stands totalling 

632sq metres. 

Six new exhibitors joined 

the UK group this year 

including Marden Edwards 

and Herma and feedback from 

exhibitors has been positive. 

The PPMA networking event 

took place straight after the 

second day of the show and 

was combined with US trade 

association PMMI for a second 

year, although at a new venue. 

The event was well received 

and supported by nearly 

100 people. 

Further UK success came at 

the Gulfood Manufacturing 

Awards, held during the 

exhibition, with PPMA 

member DC Norris & Company 

(DCN) winning the top 

futuristic technology ‘future 

in focus’ award. The top 

prize was for the company’s 

patented jet cook steam 

infusion cooking technology. 

The UK Pavilion was organised by the PPMA for members and non-members

could be key to success

this is the positive news for IFFA 

2019, billed as the premier global 

event for the meat industry. 

The exhibition opens its doors 

from 4 to 9 May 2019 when it 

will once again make Frankfurt 

am Main the centre of attention 

for the sector. Organiser Messe 

Frankfurt is looking forward 

to welcoming more than 

1,000 exhibitors from about 50 

countries taking up 119,000sq 

metres of exhibition space – 

8% more than at the last IFFA –

Working closely with 

its neighbours the 

Manufacturing 

Technology Centre (MTC), 

Fanuc UK recently welcomed 

two of MTC’s ‘gold standard’ 

apprentices; Oscar Pickerill 

(20) and Ben Farmer (17) to 

its Coventry facility. 

The boys both joined 

the MTC apprenticeship 

programme in September 2016 

after deliberating the options 

presented to them by their 

schools. Despite university 

being heavily promoted, 

both students decided to 

look for work experience and 

apprenticeship opportunities 

after leaving school. 

BETTER PROMOTION 

Both Ben and Oscar believe 

that their respective senior 

schools needed to promote 

apprenticeships more, rather 

than focusing on ‘traditional’ 

higher education routes. 

“The class learning 

environment wasn’t for me 

and I knew I didn’t want 

to go to university, but the 

advice my school provided 

Oscar Pickerill and Ben Farmer say schools should promote apprenticeships 

pointed in the direction of the 

government’s apprenticeship 

website, rather than focusing 

on companies and industries 

that we actually wanted to 

work in,” explains Oscar. 

However, after sourcing the 

apprenticeship programme 

with the MTC directly, the 

pair are now working with 

Fanuc as part of its extensive 

two-year apprenticeship 

programme after a successful 

work placement. 

The MTC offers a range of 

apprenticeship programmes 

in advanced engineering as 

it looks to contribute towards 

solving the skills shortages 

within the manufacturing and 

technology industries. The MTC 

also works with manufacturers, 

offering them the opportunity 

to use their Apprenticeship 

Levy to fund engineering 

apprentices who will gain 

training experience in product 

design and development.

is to be held up in Scotland for the first time

Robotics event says to sweat the 

assets, not the people for success 

The inaugural Future 

Robotics event took place 

at Warwick University 

in November and delivered 

seminars and an exhibition 

area to the 118 participants. 

Opening the event was local 

MP Matt Western who talked 

about how vital it now is for 

UK manufacturers to take 

another look at robotics to 

increase their productivity 

in a post-Brexit world. 

“We are at a critical point in 

our industrial development 

as a country and as policy 

makers, we have to encourage

speech was Mike Wilson,

where many overseas workers 

are now starting to go home. 

“We can close the growing 

productivity gap by simply 

installing more automation,” 

he said. He also warned the 

conference that according to 

recent figures, there are going 

to be 257,000 vacancies in 

engineering by 2022 and so 

change needs to happen fast. 

“We should sweat the assets, 

not the people,” he said. 

He felt that success requires 

a change of culture in the UK 

to embrace the flexibility of 

robot automation. 

Per Kloster Poulsen from 

Universal Robots talked 

about workers wanting 

meaningful jobs and 

consumers wanting more 

than standardised products. 

“Collaborative robots are 

essentially very powerful 

tools that give workers or 

‘operators’ superhuman 

powers in terms of speed 

and accuracy,” he said.

about practical examples 

for success, including Peter 

Williamson of RARUK 

Automation and his customer

Universal cobots at its site, 

all of which are being used 

to increase productivity in 

previously laborious manual 

tasks and help the company

about practical examples in 

his talk about real-time robot 

vision using 3D stereo vision. 

Examples he used included 

3D engine block picking; food 

pouch picking and fish killing 

in a salmon slaughter house.

promotional balloons, but in 

2014, the company received 

its first enquiry for food flags. 

As a relatively intricate manual 

assembly operation, logic pointed 

towards automation as the way 

forward which led the company 

to install the collaborative robots 

supplied by RARUK Automation. 

Indeed, such has been the 

success of this automated set-up 

that B-Loony has gained significant 

market share and can now produce 

a staggering 400,000 food flags a 

week. Four UR3 cobots supplied 

by RARUK Automation now serve 

this area of the business on a 

24-hour shift pattern. 

Automating manual tasks has 

not been to reduce headcount 

however, but to gain market 

share. The company has since 

added a further two units for 

bunting production. 

How to make a robot 

safe was a presentation 

made by David Collier of 

Pilz Automation Technology 

during the Future Robotics 

event which was backed up 

by the company’s stand that 

included products to help 

users in this area. As he said, 

there are no ‘safe robots’ only 

‘safe robot applications’. 

For instance, the safety 

laser scanner PSENscan 

that offers two-dimensional 

area monitoring with an 

opening angle of 275 degrees 

and a protected field range 

of up to 5.5 metres was on 

show. Thanks to the free 

configuration of warning 

fields and protected fields, 

plus the ability to adapt 

to structural conditions,

the buoyancy of the

Nearly 45,000 visitors attended 

the largest ever PACK EXPO 

International and co-located 

Healthcare Packaging EXPO 

2018 in Chicago towards the 

end of last year.

Technologies) reported 457 new 

exhibitors in the 2,500 total 

which bears out the findings 

of the packaging industry 

growth forecasts reported in 

PMMI’s State of the Industry US 

Packaging Machinery Report. 

This research found that packaging 

machinery shipments are forecast 

to grow to US$10.5 billion. 

The report found that the 

value of domestic shipments of 

packaging machinery rose 6.4% 

to US$8.2 billion in 2017 and are 

forecast to grow at a compound 

annual growth rate of 4.1% up 

until 2023. 

Food represents the largest 

packaging machinery sector in 

2017, accounting for 36.6% of 

shipment revenues, followed by 

beverage at 22.1%. However, 

the pharmaceuticals sector is 

expected to grow the fastest to 

2022, at an annual rate of 3.5%.

Mespack demonstrated what 

it says is the fastest baby food 

machine of its type on the 

market at Pack Expo 2018. 

In operation, the H-540-FE6 

machine has a throughput of 

300-360 sachets of between 

120-200 ml in size, with a top 

anti-choke spout. 

Designed to meet the 

hygiene and safety needs of 

the baby food sector, the 

machine also has a servomotor 

system for pack transport 

which ensures accurate 

form and fill while reducing 

wastage of food and film. 

Visitors to Mespack’s stand 

also saw another high capacity 

machine in operation, this 

time a machine for pre-formed 

stand-up pouches and large 

format sachets: the H-570-SCD. 

“Intended for packaging 

cereals, detergent tablets and 

grated cheese among other 

products, this machine is the 

one that allows production 

in the largest format: up to 

two 3-litre sachets per cycle,” 

explains marketing director

“The H-570-SCD is also a 

very versatile machine, with 

a range of accessories and 

applications that can be 

installed if required.

Serialisation project ensures 

FMD compliance is delivered 

Uhlmann Pac-Systeme 

has executed a major 

serialisation project to 

ensure Novartis subsidiary 

Salutas Pharma, and its Polish 

affiliate LEK, are compliant 

with the Falsified Medicines 

Directive (FMD) that comes 

into effect on February 19 

this year. 

The FMD’s implementation 

across the EU will require all 

prescription drugs to carry 

a 2D data matrix code and 

to be sealed with a tamper 

evident label. In addition, 

a human-readable unique 

serial number is required, 

as well as a batch code, batch 

number and expiry date for 

the contents (see pages 

50 – 51, Machinery Update – 

November/December 2018).

For Novartis, the task in hand 

saw the upgrading of 

47 production lines within 

one year and the project 

has enabled Uhlmann 

Pac-Systeme to demonstrate 

its proficiency in serialisation. 

The implementation of the 

serialisation and tamperevidence 

specifications 

of the FMD entails

intervening in sensitive

Salutas Pharma and LEK, 

both subsidiaries of Sandoz 

companies belonging to the 

Novartis Group, addressed 

these challenges by fitting 

all 47 packaging lines with 

serialisation units in one of 

the largest projects in the 

company’s history – and all 

within a tight time schedule. 

The Salutas sites in 

Barleben and Osterweddingen 

are among the most modern 

and efficient pharmaceutical 

production facilities in 

Europe. “Around eight billion 

tablets and capsules leave 

our Barleben plant alone in a 

year,” explains Kay Reinhardt, 

team leader engineering 

projects at Salutas Pharma. 

“Altogether, it was 26 

packaging lines in Barleben 

and Osterweddingen that 

we had to modify to meet EU 

market needs,” he says. 

THE POLISH AFFILIATE 

Meanwhile, the Polish affiliate 

LEK was planning a project 

of similar scale which 

increased the number of 

modified lines to almost 50. 

The upgrading of so many 

practically identical lines 

posed a major mechanical 

engineering challenge. 

Added to this, the generics 

manufacturer had stipulated 

an extremely tight time 

schedule in order to keep 

costly downtimes short and 

avoid supply shortages. 

The ability of a partner being 

able to execute a project of this 

magnitude was an essential 

criterion for Salutas. 

“As we have been working 

with Uhlmann since the 

1990s, we are familiar with 

the company’s project 

management and were certain 

that we would receive the 

necessary support,” he tells 

Machinery Update. 

In terms of timescales, the 

two companies defined the

machine and project details 

in mid-2016 and drew up an 

ambitious implementation 

plan. Salutas opted for 

the compact Uhlmann 

serialisation platform USP. 

The module-based platform 

incorporates components

serialisation process involves 

the marking of the cartons 

with a 2D data matrix code, 

which is read by a camera 

and transmitted in real time 

to a site server. “We worked 

with Uhlmann to adapt the 

machine and software, so 

everything optimally meets 

our requirements,” explains 

Reinhardt.

the usual teething problems 

so that production complies 

with all the EU specifications 

coming into force at the 

beginning of this February. 

Reinhardt believes the 

success of this large-scale 

project was essentially 

based on four pillars: good 

preparation, extensive 

testing of the pilot machine,

schedule, and, not least, 

dedicated, well-coordinated 

project teams.

to introduce new parts into 

the production line without 

having to buy further new 

equipment, such as bowl 

feeders), in a project that took 

just eight weeks. 

The packaging company 

specialises in the development 

of products that protect items 

that need to be moved in large 

containers and already uses 

three bowl feeders to feed 

different components into the 

production line. However, 

when it wanted to enhance its 

products still further with the 

addition of a new plastic air 

valve, there was insufficient 

space left to introduce a 

new bowl feeder into the 

production line. 

A more flexible solution 

that wouldn’t need so much 

space was therefore required, 

and so DamGaard Automatik, 

a Danish systems integrator, 

suggested Omron’s AnyFeeder 

SX240, combined with Omron’s 

visual part recognition and 

robotics capabilities. 

The AnyFeeder SX240 is a 

flexible feeding system that 

is ideal for use with a huge 

variety of small parts and 

enables users to change over 

to different products quickly 

and easily. It can flip and 

shake parts to separate them 

The solution was more integrated, more intuitive and more versatile on the line 

and to ensure that they are in 

the right orientation for the 

robot to pick. 

To complement the 

solution, DamGaard selected 

the eCobra 600 robot for 

the task, a medium-sized 

SCARA robot for precision 

machining, assembly and 

materials handling, and with 

a 600mm reach. Meanwhile, 

the Smart Vision MX is used to 

identify valid parts and their 

orientation and position. 

It then relays this information 

to the robot and AnyFeeder. 

These three elements 

are brought together by 

Omron’s Automation Control 

Environment (called ACE) – a 

PC-based software package. 

“We believe that our solution 

is more integrated, more

developed system 3F from 

Livetech which includes its Top 

Loader with three functions. 

This highly automated system 

is designed for the secondary 

packaging of six different formats 

of products in two types of 

boxes and minimises the time 

needed for changeovers between 

these formats. 

The LTL-3F system is designed 

to box baked goods packed in 

flow packs, and includes three 

Livetech robots: the first one 

forms the box starting from a flat 

die-cut, the second picks up the 

products and puts them inside 

the box, and the third one closes 

the box, positioning and forming 

a second die-cut element on top 

of it to serve as a lid. 

For this solution, Livetech has 

equipped the LTL-3F with logic 

and motion control solutions 

from Rockwell Automation. 

The automation architecture, 

programmed in RSLogix 5000 

software environment, is based 

on a Compact Logix TM 5380 

controller, with 4 MB of storage 

and motion integrated on 

Ethernet/IP for control of 20 

axes, and a series of Kinetix 5700 

double-axis servos which manage 

all moving parts of the LTL-3F: 

the robots, the conveyor belt and 

the magazine.

Demand for pre-prepared produce in convenient formats is still 

rising, but packers need to be mindful of its ‘green’ credentials

he healthy eating trends 

continue and the demand for 

pre-prepared fresh produce has 

seen a plethora of packaging 

formats come onto the market 

in recent times, with ever-more exotic 

options on offer to today’s consumer. 

“Although pre-prepared fresh produce 

is not a new concept – Ishida launched the 

first multihead weigher for packing bagged 

salad back in the late 1980s – undoubtedly 

there has been huge growth in this area 

in recent years fuelled both by increasing 

demand for convenience foods and also 

a greater focus on healthy eating,” 

says Torsten Giese, marketing manager, 

PR & exhibitions at Ishida Europe. 

“In terms of product and packs, 

we have seen much development and 

diversification over the years,” 

he continues. “From a simple bag of 

lettuce leaves, pre-packed salads now 

offer many more exotic varieties and 

mixtures as well as the introduction 

of layered salads in trays and eating 

on-the-move formats.” Fresh fruit slices 

and salads are another growth market. 

And as well as the variety of pack formats, 

smaller sizes are becoming prevalent to 

meet the needs of the on-the-go sector, 

while attractive presentation is also 

an important requirement in highly 

competitive markets. 

Giese believes the challenge for 

manufacturers is to get these typically 

short-shelf-life products onto retail shelves 

as quickly and efficiently as possible. 

“Traditionally this has been a labourintensive 

exercise, but this is expensive, 

and it is often difficult to find people 

willing to do the work, so equipment 

suppliers have over the years focused on 

the development of automated solutions. 

BRUISE-SENSITIVE PRODUCTS 

“In multihead weighing, for example, 

we have seen the introduction of models 

that are able to cope with sticky or 

bruise-sensitive products with features 

such as special surfaces and reduced 

angles that ensure smooth and consistent 

product flow and gentle handling at high 

speeds,” he says. 

And ensuring product quality in 

products marked ‘ready to eat’ is also very 

important. To make sure this type of fruit 

and veg is free from foreign bodies, Ishida 

has noted that more and more suppliers 

are adopting x-ray inspection technology. 

Tony Burgess, head of sales and control 

systems at Proseal thinks that in some 

respects, the fresh produce sector is 

helping to satisfy the demands of two of 

the current ‘hot’ topics in our mainstream 

media; that of health and sustainability. 

With growing concerns about the 

increases in obesity and diabetes – 

particularly among the young – we 

are constantly being urged to eat more 

healthily, to meet nutritional advice to 

consume at least five portions of fruit 

and vegetables each day. In today’s 

world – with global supply chains – we 

are now able to enjoy our favourite items 

throughout the year. 

“As part of this, advances in both 

packaging and packing technology have 

provided us with the convenience of both 

fruit and vegetables ready prepared either 

to eat or to cook,” he says. “However, this 

convenience has come at a price, with 

the environmental implications of the 

extra packaging required in comparison 

to buying the produce loose. Plastics 

packaging is the focus of much criticism, 

despite or perhaps because of its many 

convenience benefits,” he says. 

He believes the tray sealing sector 

has been able to travel some way to

British fruit packer, 

allowing it to meet growing 

demand from its customers. 

Since purchasing its GT5eX-Twin 

and two GT2 machines, Mansfields 

has been able to achieve 

significantly greater throughput 

with no compromise on the quality 

and freshness of its fruit. 

Based in Kent, Mansfields is 

one of the largest growing, storage 

and packing operations in the UK, 

packing 25,000 assorted fruits a 

year. On the company’s production 

line, the GT5eX-Twin has run at 

200 packs per minute and the GT2s 

at 80 packs per minute, although 

speeds vary depending on the fruit.

suppliers cautious 

of investing in automated 

machinery,” says Brillopak director 

David Jahn. But, he argues, 

with the continued funding for 

the Producer Organiser (PO) 

scheme affording British growers 

and packers the opportunity 

to examine and plan future 

machinery investments, now could 

be the perfect time to adopt a more 

aggressive automation strategy, 

and here are four reasons why: 

1. Fresh produce has a great future 

Health continues to be the biggest 

trend driving consumer eating 

habits, with consumers often 

willing to pay a premium for it. 

Additionally, health can be 

combined with convenience and 

snacking to tick all the boxes, 

and with retailers admitting that 

customers value the provenance, 

quality and environmental 

footprint when purchasing 

British produce, suppliers need 

enough production capacity 

to meet this demand. 

2. PO funding continues 

The Government has confirmed 

that POs will be funded at the 

current £35 million a year until 

the end of the current parliament, 

even if the UK leaves the EU 

without a deal. And with half of all 

British fruit and veg sold through 

the 33 members of the scheme, 

the 50% funding provided for 

capital investment projects and 

marketing means that qualifying 

organisations can move forward 

with planned investments. 

3. Positive labour signs 

Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s 

announcement of a pilot scheme 

for agricultural seasonal labour 

has been an unprecedented win 

for fresh produce, with no other 

sector being singled out for special

quality, with better opportunities 

now available elsewhere. 

4. Embracing change

Gardens told a conference recently: 

“I genuinely believe that the people 

who don’t have a plan in times of 

adversity are the ones who will fail.” 

“Even if you’re several years off 

from a fully automated packing 

facility, now’s the time to plant the 

flag and begin investigating 

the automation opportunity,”

to ensure they didn’t stick to the belts

A recent project has seen 

UPM Conveyors liaise with 

Ilapak who were tasked with 

bagging loose leaf at 500kgs 

an hour in a turnkey system. 

The company therefore had to 

establish the correct belt type 

to eliminate any risk of leaf 

adhering and not discharging 

correctly. Extensive trials with 

various types of product on 

different belt types resulted 

in UPM using a meshed nub 

top belt from Forbo Siegling to 

satisfy all the criteria.

Automation with 

flexibility is the 

key to post-Brexit 

There’s no denying 

that almost every 

industry in the UK 

will be affected by 

Brexit in 2019, but 

the fresh produce sector is set to 

be one of the hardest hit,” says 

Tony McDonald, sales director 

at Ilapak. “Reliant for so long on 

cheap, Eastern European workers, 

staffing levels have been falling 

significantly since the Brexit vote, 

and the situation is only likely 

to get worse. 

“The obvious solution to the 

Brexit labour shortage on farms 

and packhouses around the UK 

is to automate, but this is a sector 

which has so far been slow to do 

so; the main reason being cost,” 

says McDonald. “Unlike bakery 

or other factory-produced goods, 

which are identical and repetitive, 

fresh produce is variable – no two 

items are the same which requires 

an automation system which is 

flexible; but this very flexibility 

comes at a price. 

TIGHT PROFIT MARGINS 

“Fresh producers work to tight 

profit margins, typically just 3%, 

so the budget for automation 

investment just hasn’t been there,” 

he continues. “But Brexit will 

mean that they have no choice as 

without automation, they simply 

won’t survive.” 

Aside from Brexit, McDonald 

believes the other main factors 

influencing the fresh produce 

sector in the UK are waste 

reduction and convenience. 

Consumers are demanding 

smaller packs of peeled and/ 

or cut fresh goods, perfect for 

lunchboxes, and are also looking 

for extra convenience, for example 

individual items such as dressings 

and crouton sachets included 

within bags of salad, he says. 

“We’re working with a number 

of producers to develop automated 

packaging solutions to meet these 

trends and expect demand for 

convenience-led packaging to

McDonald believes that no 

debate about the future of fresh 

produce packaging would be 

complete without mentioning 

plastics. At the PPMA Show last 

year, the company predicted that 

an industry-wide move over to 

ultrasonically sealed PE films for 

packaging bagged fresh produce 

would result from the backlash 

against non-recyclable plastics. 

For instance, Tesco announced 

a switch to PE films for its 

organic bagged salads, as part 

of a group-wide pledge to make 

all its packaging recyclable 

or compostable and is using 

ultrasonics technology to seal 

these bags. 

Latest generation bag makers 

such as Ilapak’s Vegatronic 

6000 can seal everything from 

laminated films to PE and LDPE 

films ultrasonically. 

The company estimates that one 

third of all VFFS (vertical form, fill 

and seal) packaging machines in 

the salad and cut leaf industry field 

are now equipped with ultrasonics, 

and predicts that this figure 

will rise as other retailers and 

producers follow Tesco’s example 

and switch to PE films. 

“The ability to add claims such 

as ‘fully recyclable packaging’ to 

the front of salad packs is a major 

advantage in today’s increasingly 

sustainability-conscious market,” 

says Phil Rule, VFFS product 

manager at Ilapak UK.

The Ishida IX-GN inspection 

system has been installed 

for its versatility and 

ability to spot the smallest 

contaminants as well as any 

build-up of scale that occurs 

during the potato cooking 

process itself. 

GENETIC ALGORITHM 

The x-ray system incorporates 

Ishida’s special Genetic 

Algorithm (GA) technology 

that enables the machine to be 

trained to more easily detect 

specific contaminants. 

In addition, the IX-GN is 

able to handle different sizes

“The Ishida IX-GN is one of 

the few x-ray models capable 

of consistently meeting our 

requirements and we have 

been very impressed with its 

performance, as well as the 

support we have received 

from Ishida.” 

We believe we are the only diced 

potato supplier in the country that 

has this level of product inspection 

Another important benefit 

of the x-ray system is its robust 

washdown design and 

easy-to-remove conveyor, 

which enables the machine 

to cope with the regular daily 

cleaning that is part of 

Swancote Foods’ rigorous 

hygiene regime. 

The IX-GN is in operation 16 

hours a day, five days per 

week, handling up to four 

tonnes of product per hour. 

In order to incorporate the 

x-ray and new linear weigher 

into the existing high care area 

of the factory, Swancote Foods 

created a raised platform 

on which the machines 

sit. Despite the challenges, 

installation took place 

successfully over a weekend

pre-printed labels used 

on its meter kits, Ascensia 

Diabetes Care expects to save 

an estimated $2 million over 

the next five years.

printers on its test-strip vial

Electrical safety 

rules are changing

With the target date for publication of the new standard for machinery electrical safety being 

March 14 this year, we outline some of the more prescriptive and mandatory changes… 

The key standard for 

machinery electrical 

safety in Europe is 

EN 60204-1:2006, however, 

the target date for publication 

of the new EN 60204-1:2018, for 

all European Member States, 

is March 14, 2019 and there 

are some impending changes 

that machine builders should 

note. While it is based on the 

international standard IEC 

60204:2016, there are some 

key differences between both 

versions. These differences are 

mainly where ‘should’ in the 

IEC version has been replaced 

by ‘shall’ in the EN document, 

making it much more 

prescriptive and mandatory 

in tone. 

The previous version of 

EN 60204-1 was published 

12 years ago and there are 

some significant technical 

changes, which helpfully the 

Foreword of the IEC version of 

the standard highlights as: 

• added requirements to 

address applications 

involving power drive 

systems (PDS); 

• revised electromagnetic 

compatibility (EMC) 

requirements; 

• clarified overcurrent 

protection requirements; 

• requirements for 

determination of the short 

circuit current rating of the 

electrical equipment; 

• revised protective 

bonding requirements 

and terminology; 

• reorganisation and revision 

to Clause 9 (control circuits 

and control functions), 

including requirements 

pertaining to safe torqueoff 

of Power Drive System 

(PDS), emergency stop, and 

control circuit protection; 

• revised symbols for 

actuators of control devices; 

• revised technical 

documentation requirements; 

• general updating to current 

special national conditions, 

normative standards, and 

bibliographical references. 

There are many updates, 

both small and significant, 

too many to fully detail here, 

but I will highlight some key 

elements to think about. For 

instance, IEC 60204:2016 now 

includes a list of “…differing 

practices of a less permanent 

nature…” in various countries. 

For example, “Disconnection 

of the neutral conductor is 

mandatory in a TN-S system 

(France and Norway)”. 

This would make it possible 

for machine builders to 

include disconnection of 

neutral as a standard feature 

of the isolators which they use 

to cover all countries in the 

European Economic Area. 

more specific terms 

The new version of the 

standard also sees terms and 

definitions being renumbered 

and expanded, often to be 

more specific. For example, the 

term ‘basic protection’ replaces 

‘protection against direct 

contact’, ‘fault protection’ 

replaces ‘protection against 

indirect contact’, and 

‘emergency operations’ has 

replaced ‘emergency stop 

function’. 

While Clause 4.4.2 (EMC) 

is significantly reduced, a 

detailed informative Annex H 

has been added. The clauses 

in the published versions of 

both the IEC and EN standards 

are in fact the same, despite 

it being previously suggested 

that the new EN version would 

have a significantly reduced 

EMC clause compared to its 

IEC cousin. 

The information in Annex H 

should help machine builders 

because of the extended 

detail. However, detailed 

guidance is also contained in 

the specific EMC standards 

The new regulation is littered 

with updates that must be taken into 

account once published/harmonised 

such as IEC 61000. 

Meanwhile, Clause 5.2 now 

requires that the terminal 

for the external protective 

conductor shall be in the 

same compartment as the 

incoming supply instead 

of ‘in the vicinity’. Also, for 

the breaking capacity of the 

supply disconnecting device, 

the calculation should now 

consider motors supplied by 

converters or similar devices. 

And now the operating means 

for a supply disconnecting 

device that is not intended for 

emergency operations may 

have a supplementary cover 

or door for protection against 

environmental conditions. 

Clause 5.5 is now ‘Devices 

for isolating electrical 

equipment’ instead of 

‘Devices for disconnecting…’. 

While there has always 

been a distinction between 

‘isolation’ and ‘disconnection’ 

it has not always been easily 

understood. This addition 

helps with clarification. 

significant changes 

There are significant changes 

to section 9.2 ‘Control 

functions’. Clause 9.2.4 is 

now 9.3.6 ‘Suspension of 

safety functions and/or 

protective measures’ and 

has specific requirements for 

mode selection, delivering 

additional clarification and 

emphasis. 

Section 10.2 is now called 

‘Actuators’ (was ‘Pushbuttons’) 

and includes 

reserving the red/yellow 

colour combination for 

‘emergency operation devices’. 

It also now reserves the colour 

yellow “…for use in abnormal 

conditions, for example, 

in the event of an abnormal 

condition of the process, or to 

interrupt an automatic cycle”. 

The changes highlighted 

above are just a small 

selection of key updates, 

but the change from 

EN 60204:2006 to 

EN 60204:2018 is littered with 

updates that must be taken 

into account once the new 

version of the standard is 

published by all member 

countries and then harmonised.
