Issue 288

January 2019

Hello

Welcome to this issue of The Garage.

Welcome to this issue of The Garage

THIS ISSUE gets underneath a car

and under the bonnet with two features

looking at long-established

market segments, those being braking

and filters.

Both are first-rate income generators and

filters has become more of a cash generator

thanks to the increasing fitting of cabin filters.

More of that in a bit.

Brakes have, since the earliest day of the

independent aftermarket, been a great work

provider. Being safety-critical workshops

cannot afford to fit any old tat that arrives

in a white box, and rightly so. The introduction

of R90 brought some re-focussing on

just was (and wasn’t) an acceptable level of

quality but some suppliers felt it didn’t go

far enough.

Having said that the quality of braking

products is better than it has been, and

rightly so because along with a car’s steering

and suspension, braking plays a crucial

safety role. Dismissing that by fitting lowrent

components is bad for both drivers and

our industry.

Filters – while it’s easy to think oil and air

types, and maybe fuel filters too, it’s the rise

in cabin filter fitting that has shaken up the

aftermarket over the past few years. That is a

gift from car makers, who are fitting air conditioning

in even their smallest cars. Once

the preserve of luxury saloons, its fitting

has cascaded down to the smallest hatchbacks

and that means there are many cars

out there that could, at any one time, benefit

form a fresh cabin filter.,

Once the cause of dread among technicians

well versed in complex fitting procedures, a

replacement is generally much easier than it

used to be, and it offers a great margin.

Yet while it is easy to think solely about

cabin filters we mustn’t forget the other

types, and their importance in keeping cars

running efficiently and reliably. The introduction

of extended service intervals played

a big part in the design of oil filters, and even

on older cars that were designed for long service

intervals, it’s important to fit the correct

type, rather than a cheap one that may, in the

longer term, cause premature engine wear.

All the best!

Motor Ombudsman

Upgrades Website

The Motor Ombudsman,

the automotive

dispute resolution

provider, is pleased

to announce that

it has upgraded its website

with the unveiling of its new

Knowledge Base (TheMotorOmbudsman.org/knowledge-base).

The introduction

of the online tool comes as

part of the body’s commitment

to make it quicker and

simpler for motorists to resolve

their queries and complaints

in relation to buying

and running a car.

The user-friendly resource

can be accessed using the

“Find an answer” button at

the top of any page of the

website, and for ease of navigation,

the content within

the Knowledge Base has

been categorised by each of

The Motor Ombudsman’s

four Chartered Trading

Standards Institute (CTSI)-

approved Motor Industry

Codes of Practice, spanning

sales to servicing, and by vehicle

ownership.

The questions and answers

listed within each of the sections

have been compiled by

the body’s ombudsman and

adjudicators according to the

common trends which they

have seen in consumer contacts

and disputes.

Subjects included on the

Knowledge Base range from

what to do in the event of

vehicle damage whilst in the

care of a business, and the

requirements for rejecting a

car, to topics such as whether

diagnostics work should

be paid for under an extended

warranty policy, and

how to find out if a specific

vehicle is affected by a safety

recall. After reading any of

the articles, website visitors

are able to rate the content,

and submit suggestions by e-

mail for other questions that

they feel could be addressed

by The Motor Ombudsman.

Going forward, the Knowledge

Base will continue to be

expanded to ensure that it

meets the needs of consumers,

and that it reflects some

of the main issues being

highlighted in the industry.

Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman

and Managing Director

of The Motor Ombudsman,

said: “We are continually

looking at new and innovative

ways to make the process

of providing readily available

information, and resolving

disputes between customers

and a business, as fast and

as simple as possible. With

our organisation being at

the forefront of the automotive

sector, we are able to see

first-hand the areas that are

causing the greatest concern

for consumers under each of

our Codes of Practice. This

then serves as a useful base

to create accessible guidance

for motorists and to inform

them as to how best to solve

their issue. We are expecting

the Knowledge Base to be an

extremely popular addition

to our website.”

BRIDGESTONE ACHIEVES

BEST OEM RESULTS IN 2018

IN 2018, Bridgestone, the

world’s largest tyre and

rubber company, was

chosen to provide over

120 new original equipment

fitments in EMEA. This

represents an increase of

more than 30 per cent. The

fitments are spread across

more than 40 different models

from 15 different manufacturers.

Bridgestone leads the industry

for investments in Research

& Development. And

Original Equipment Manufacturers

(OEMs) clearly appreciate

these investments.

The quality and innovation

of the Bridgestone premium

tyre range is underlined by

the car manufacturers who

are committing to using them

as original equipment, including

brands such as Toyota,

Mercedes and Porsche.

At the same time, Bridgestone

continues to serve as the

primary supplier for Audi,

SEAT, Skoda and remains

strategic partner of the Volkswagen

Group. At Audi, the

volume of fitments has even

doubled over the course of

the last five years. In addition,

Bridgestone has taken

a strong position with BMW.

This is best acknowledged

through the extensive choice

of Bridgestone fitments as

original equipment for the

BMW 3-Series, the BMW

7-Series, BMW X5/X7 and

BMW Z4.

Vehicle manufacturers have

chosen Bridgestone tyres for

their original equipment fitments

for a wide variety of

models. They include electric/hybrids

such as BMW

i3s, Toyota Corolla, the universal

Audi A6 Allroad, tourers

such as the Opel Insignia,

the innovative BMW 8-series,

as well as the luxury Porsche

Cayenne and sport cars including

the Ferrari Portofino

and the Renault Mégane R.S.

and R.S. Trophy. More than

85 per cent of the fitments

are now for tyres with a diameter

of 17” or greater.

Going the extra mile

Bridgestone goes the extra

mile when it comes to developing

and designing tyres.

The company works in synergy

with manufacturers, accommodating

their requests

with imagination and creativity.

The tyres are fine-tuned

to specific vehicle designs

to ensure every element of

performance. This allows

Bridgestone to respond to all

sorts of challenges - ranging

from rolling resistance and

fuel consumption, to noise

reduction, driver comfort

and drive behaviour - and

incorporate appropriately

targeted technologies into

the tyres to achieve a specific

improvement.

Revolutionary technology

Bridgestone always pushes

standards higher in the area

of technology with solutions

such as B-Silent, ologic and

the improved Run-Flat Technology.

Every single component

of Bridgestone tyres is

engineered to respond to the

requirement of the OEMs.

Cutting-edge tyre design technologies

such as low-wear

Nano Pro tech, highly dispersible

Silica compounds

and newly designed patterns,

cavity shapes and optimised

skin depth as well as innovative

mixing processes, allow

Bridgestone to find the best

balance between the tyres’

characteristics and the vehicle’s

setup.

Partnerships for the future

According to Mark Tejedor,

Vice President of Original

Equipment at Bridgestone

EMEA, the tailored approach

allows Bridgestone to optimise

the unique character of

any vehicle. ‘In an industry in

rapid transformation, where

vehicles are becoming more

and more CASE - connected,

autonomous, shared and

electric - Bridgestone delivers

new solutions and technologies

answering car manufacturer’s

most demanding

challenges. The tyres we are

developing today are aimed

at meeting needs for the next

two to five years and far beyond.’

Partnerships and co-creation

have resulted in more

than tailored designs. ‘It’s

enabled us to take a step in

a new direction that leads

decisively into the future,’

says Tejedor. ‘We are creating

new tyres as well as mobility

solutions and services that

are more efficient and better

adapted to vehicles and new

automotive developments

than ever before. By doing

this, we will keep drivers going,

no matter what.’

and has grown in scale significantly

over the past 28

years, expanding its operations

to a second site in order

to better accommodate commercial

vehicles, and now

employing 18 staff across

both locations.

This growth necessitated

an overhaul of Swift Motors’

business practices, leading

to live demonstration of

TechMan’s garage management

system.

After some initial ‘teething

troubles’ with the Tech-

Man system, garage owner

Glen Strachan was inclined

to end his subscription, as

he lacked the time to fully

immerse himself in how the

system worked.

Glen commented: “To

begin with, we found that

working with the parts tracking

system seemed to take

too long, and we found that

mechanics were standing

around not doing anything

as they weren’t adding their

jobs onto the tablets quickly

enough.”

TechMan promptly delivered

additional on-site training

for Glen and invested

days of their time to addressing

the technicians’ questions

and concerns in person.

The TechMan support

team have been very patient

with us,” continued Glen.

They helped us to tailor the

system to suit our needs, and

I was amazed to find that –

despite the hard slog of the

first few weeks – when I examined

the figures at the end

of the month we had hit a record

for labour sales!

“As we got more adept at

using the system we achieved

better and better labour

sales each month for four

consecutive months.

The ability to be able to

see our productivity and the

hours that we have available

to sell has totally transformed

the way we work.”

Such simple yet effective

features help to highlight

how many hours garages

are actually selling each day,

helping to streamline the

overall efficiency of the business.

TechMan’s transformative

impact on Swift Motor

Services has lead Glen to

upgrade to the ‘Pro’ subscription

package, which

will allow him to track technician

efficiency and manage

his second site remotely.

THE LIGHT BRIGADE

ALTHOUGH some segments of the automotive

industry are relatively slow in their

development cycles, vehicle lighting is

going through a particularly rapid period

of change.

Naturally, being able to offer a contemporary replacement

lighting solution is vital for the independent sector

and something for which ELTA Automotive, with its

25-year lighting heritage, is renowned.

One of these recent developments, from an automotive

design perspective, is the LED headlight.

“LED technology benefits the vehicle manufacturers

(VMs) in a number of ways, such as energy saving and

weight reduction, but particularly in the design freedom

they afford,” explains Tim Brotherton, ELTA’s marketing

manager. “Smaller, but more powerful lights are

very much the current vogue.

“However, LED is also still seen by the VMs as a legitimate

optional extra, for which they can charge, so they

have to offer a ‘standard’ option and that, for the time

being, remains halogen.

“To facilitate a halogen format in an LED package has

necessitated the development of the latest generation

H18 and H19 bulbs, which although visually similar to

the traditional H4 and H7, are in fact, quite different.

These derivatives have increased luminous flux – or

intensity of light – and greater precision then their H4

and H7 counterparts, which allows VMs to use them

in smaller and more rectangular headlight units, while

maintaining optimum light output.”

To provide an aftermarket solution for these applications,

ELTA has introduced H18 and H19 bulbs into

both the iconic Lucas and its own VISIONPRO brands.

Naturally, these conform with ECE R37 1,700lm ± 8%

standardisation.

DEPTH OF RANGE

ELTA Automotive is a leading aftermarket distributor of

automotive bulbs, supplying everything from the smallest

tachograph bulb to cutting edge xenon HID headlamps

and innovative upgrade bulbs.

The complete range consists of more than 600 references

catering for cars, light and heavy-duty vehicles

and motorcycles. All are manufactured to the very

highest standards using premium quality materials to

ensure both high performance and reliability.

Shaftec has been supplying

remanufactured and new

parts to the motor trade for

more than 20 years. With 130

employees, the business operates

from its 42,000 sqft

facility in Birmingham where

it remanufactures and distributes

products around the

UK and Europe.

Ardenton targets majority

investments in businesses

alongside strong incumbent

management teams seeking

support in delivering longterm

sustainable growth for

their businesses. Ardenton

has been active in the West

Midlands since the Canadianbased

investor established its

first overseas office in the UK

previous West Midlands acquisitions

include Corbett’s

the Galvanizer and PP Control

& Automation.

FAG bearings are approved for

original fitment, and engineered

for a smooth and silent drive.

QUALITY IS NOT

JUST SKIN DEEP.

Wheel bearings are a safety critical component, so there

are good reasons why FAG bearings are tested, approved

and originally fitted around the world. One reason is

our innovative LFT sealing technology that reduces

bearing friction by >30%, cutting CO 2 emissions and

fuel consumption by >1%. Cheaper bearings might not

conform to the many rigorous standards that FAG has to

meet as an OE supplier, so put your trust in the original

manufacturer. FAG - born in 1883.

Autoelectro’s

new website

already

paying off

Autoelectro

Managing Director,

Tony Bhogal, has

lauded the impact

of the rotating electrics

remanufacturer’s new

website following “excellent

feedback” from customers

since its launch at the beginning

of October last year.

A significant number of

motor factor staff members

and technicians have already

signed-up, and they

have been utilising the various

functions the site – www.

autoelectro.co.uk – offers on

a modern and easy-to-use

interface.

Tony said: “We have been

delighted and encouraged

by the volume of visitors,

numbers of sign-ups and the

response received so far. Of

course, it is early days and

the website will improve over

time, but we couldn’t be happier

with the results from the

time and resources spent on

creating the website.

“Having been immersed

inside the automotive aftermarket

for more than 30

years, we are confident that

we know exactly what both

technicians and factor staff

want from us, whether that

be diagnosis and repair bulletins,

price checks, comprehensive

part searches and

availability or using our new

and reliable ‘track and trace’

service.”

Autoparts Cumbria’s Manager,

Chris Cook, is one of

those to sign up and has

shared what he’s found to

be the most useful aspects

of Autoelectro’s new online

portal: “The most important

part of the website, for our

business, is the core collections.

We can see what’s outstanding,

which allows us to

be more organised and efficient

in-house.

“If ever there is an issue

(with core), we would usually

need to call-up or spend time

filling in forms; however, the

new website has quickened

up the process and means

we can do it all ourselves, allowing

us to focus on other

aspects of the business.

The ‘track and trace’ is

also an innovative tool, as

it allows us to stay ahead

of what we’ve ordered and

Autoelectro Managing Director,

Tony Bhogal

when it’s on its way – it’s useful

information that we can

share with our customers,

too.”

Misleading packaging still causing issues for lubricants

VLS, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications,

has announced the outcome

of cases VLS010152 and VLS010156:

complaints against two different Vetech

5W30 Multi-Fleet oils, marketed by GSF

Car Parts Ltd.

The first case related to the Vetech

SSL PRO Universal Performance Multi-

Fleet ILSAC Standard Service Oil and

alleged inconsistencies in the Technical

Data Sheet, including that the product

claimed to be produced from Group 2

and Group 3 base stocks, that the formulation

was suitable for applications

requiring VW 504/507, VW 502/505, MB

229.51, WSS-M2C913-A,B,C and Dexos

2 and that there were no additive formulations

capable of achieving all of these

specifications.

VLS’ Technical Review Panel upheld

the complaint and asked GSF Car Parts

Ltd to make a number of changes to the

data sheet including withdrawing incorrect

claims and providing further clarity

on claims in other areas. GSF Car Parts

Ltd also agreed to sign a Lubricant Marketer’s

Letter of Conformance with the

European Technical Association ATIEL

to continue make claims against the

ACEA sequences.

Case 156 related to the Vetech ESL

PRO High Performance Multi-Fleet Extended

Service Oil and a complaint

about similar issues of inconsistency in

the Technical Data Sheet, and that no

formulation was capable of being suitable

for all the applications and performances

being claimed.

VLS reviewed and again upheld the

complaint that the Technical Data Sheet

(TDS) for the product recommends its

use against a number of specifications

which included some recommendations

that were mutually exclusive. VLS

worked with GSF Car Parts to gain evidence

from their additive provider concerning

the claims supported by the

technology, and ensure it was labelled accordingly.

GSF Car Parts Ltd also agreed

to sign a Lubricant Marketer’s Letter of

Conformance with the European Technical

Association ATIEL to continue make

claims against the ACEA sequences.

David Wright, Company Secretary of

VLS and Director General of UKLA said:

“Both these cases presented with similar

concerns about products making claims

which sounded too good to be true. With

space at motor factors, workshops and

forecourts at a premium, the temptation

is to create lubricant products which can

claim to cover huge swathes of the car

parc. However, modern, sophisticated

engines require specifically tailored lubricants

– not a ‘one size fits all’ policy.

Any claims made by a lubricant product

must be backed up by evidence to ensure

that end users can make informed

choices and be confident the oil they are

buying is fit for purpose.”

Verification of Lubrication Specifications

is an independent organisation

providing a credible and trusted means

to verify lubricant specifications. For

more information on VLS please call

Extra 7 million vehicles covered

by existing SMPE parts

AIR MASS Meter

and Oxygen Sensor

ranges benefit from

vehicle coverage

boost

Standard Motor Products

Europe (SMPE), one of the

UK’s largest independently

owned automotive parts manufacturers

and suppliers, has

announced that a combined

seven million additional vehicles

are now covered by two

of its existing ranges, for its

Air Mass Meters and Oxygen

(O2) sensors.

Thanks to intensive ongoing

catalogue development,

with parts immediately accessible

through TecDoc,

SMPE’s existing Air Mass

Meter range now covers a further

1,263 models, equating

to 2,261,627 vehicles in the

UK car parc.

Meanwhile, its O2 Sensor

range includes 665 part numbers

covering 4,757,428 UK

vehicles.

Critical component

Although quite simple in

operation, the SMPE produced

air mass meter is an

extremely complex component.

The platinum element

is held at a constant temperature

of 380° C. The complex

electronic circuitry ensures

that this temperature is maintained

regardless of the volume

of air entering the inlet

tract thus cooling the sensor.

The ECU interprets the current

draw required to maintain

the temperature of the

sensor and so provide the

appropriate injector and ignition

control.

Optimum performance

SMPE sensors undergo

100% testing, ensuring better

quality, increased confidence,

and improved performance.

In addition, SMPE sensors

are thermally conditioned,

burning off any contaminants

to prolong unit life and performance.

The company manufactures

a comprehensive programme

of OE style Zirconia

and Titania O2 Sensors covering

over 3,500 vehicle applications.

Available in single,

twin, three and four wire versions

to suit the application,

the sensors are made to extremely

high standards to ensure

they match OE performance

criteria.

With part numbers being

constantly added to its product

ranges, SMPE’s electronic

catalogue ensures that all

customers have access to the

latest up-to-date information,

available through the website’s

catalogue or via their

third-party e-cat providers

who receive regular catalogue

updates.

GET YOUR

TIMING RIGHT.

INA manufactures millions of components for original

fitment every year, providing primary and FEAD systems

to every major vehicle manuacturer and giving you access

to the best range of OE content belt kits available in the

aftermarket. Every single component that you need to

carry out a professional repair is included, right down to

the last nut, bolt and washer - all in 100% OE quality.

The world’s leading engine designers and vehicle

manufacturers trust INA. So should you.

OPINION 18

In the lap of luxury

Creating the ultimate in-vehicle

experiences at CES 2019

IT’S THAT time of the year when the world’s biggest

technology companies converge on CES and present their

latest technology. 2019 is no different with robots that

can fold your clothes, a toothbrush that can clean your

teeth in ten seconds and even a connected toilet with seat

warmer and light show. But alongside the wacky inventions,

there are lots of technologies that will actually be in our

homes and cars. For the latter, it was down to HARMAN to

show what we can expect to see in our future vehicles.

According to the company, a division of Samsung, this

year was all about the car as part of a connected life that we

are destined for. That doesn’t just mean being able to read

Facebook in the car but it’s going to be about making the

most of your time whilst travelling.

“It wasn’t too long ago that a vehicle’s value was measured

by its mechanical performance and driving dynamics.

With the emerging popularity of shared mobility and invehicle

technology however, value is now being measured

by experience-per-mile,” said Dinesh Paliwal, HARMAN

President and CEO.

Avoiding an information overload

Some of the most important in-vehicle technologies today

are the instrument cluster and infotainment display, but far

too often these are designed to function on their own. For the

driver, this can make the driving experience seem disjointed

and a feeling of information overload.

To help drivers embrace the connected experience,

HARMAN has come up with a new Digital Cockpit. Scalable

so it can work from a small car to luxury saloon, it simplifies

the display layouts and can even link with a smartphone

to bring personal assistants into the car, allowing for more

voice control.

Luxury versions obviously get more content; a monitoring

system with facial recognition captures biometrics to see if

you are tired or distracted and can personalise dependent

on how you are feeling at the time!

Frustration-free in car calls?

With voice commands emerging as the norm

for managing in-car experiences, clear in-vehicle

communication is more important than ever before.

HARMAN’s Premium Communication solutions can

provide clear, frustration-free communication for all vehicle

occupants – whether it’s with a voice assistant, someone

on the other end of a phone call, or with each other. For

in-car calls the tech can remove unwanted background

noise such as air con blower or people talking in the back

of the car. And whilst you might not want to always hear

the kids in the back, the tech will also mean that you will

be able to hear them when you need to, whilst Personal

Communication Zones will remove the ‘sonic clutter’ when

you don’t. Bliss!

A securely connected future

The biggest fear many have for a connected car is the

security risk and HARMAN claims to have this covered.

As well as the HARMAN Shield providing

protection, it is also pushing Over The

Air (OTA) updates to keep

the security fresh. Using

the same wireless

process that car

makers use to update

software remotely such

as navigation map data,

means it is always up to

date. This connection means

the car to talk to your home.

As fridges or even clothes-folding

robots are all going to be connected,

your car will also be able to turn the

lights on or even turn up the heat up the

seat on that connected toilet…

EPYX BECOMES APPROVED SUPPLIER TO

INDEPENDENT MOTOR DEALERS ASSOCIATION

Commercial director Tim Meadows

EPYX has become an

approved supplier

to the Independent

Motor Dealers Association,

which

now has 300 members.

The move means that the

e-commerce specialist will

adhere to a code of conduct

when conducting business

with dealers, adhere to honour

and integrity rules, and

provide preferential pricing.

Commercial director Tim

Meadows said: “We currently

work with more than

9,000 dealers across the UK

through our platforms in a

range of areas from service

and maintenance to providing

high quality used car

stock.

“Becoming an approved

supplier to the IMDA will

allow us to reach a greater

number of independent dealers

as well as opening up a

dialogue with the organisation

itself on the needs and

priorities of their members.”

David Bilsborough of

Cheshire Cars, one of the

founders of the IMDA, said:

“Our Approved Supplier

programme is an important

part of the IMDA, helping

provide our members with

the best terms from industry-leading

suppliers.

“epyx has a longstanding

reputation as a leader in

motor industry e-commerce

and we are very pleased to

see them come on board as

part of the initiative.”

Formed in 2017, the

IMDA was created to represent,

support and become

the voice of independent car

and LCV dealers, and independent

franchise dealers,

who are based in the UK.

FILTERS TO

GET YOU

THROUGH

THE YEAR

IT’S A big market, bringing

in regular work, and

its margins aren’t too

bad. And often they’re

easy to change – welcome

to the world of filters.

Joining the more traditional

air, oil and fuel filters

are the more recent addition

of cabin filters. Once they

were a rare occurrence, but

with more and more cars being

fitted with air-conditioning

over the last two decades

demand has increased dramatically.

Yet cabin filters are

still often forgotten about

despite their safety role.

The legacy of once being

difficult to replace lives

on, with many workshops

steering clear of

getting involved. But as

car design has evolved

changing cabin filters

is, on the whole, not the

tricky, frustrating job it

once was.

It’s easy to regard

cabin filters as a purely

spring and summer component,

but being part of

a car’s heating and ventilation

system means it

is working all year round.

The Garage’s Richard

Barnett takes a look at the

different roles filters play

in a vehicles life and why

it’s important to get them

changed at least once a

year.

That means it can become

clogged and with that comes

windows that mist up, and

so comes reduced vision.

First Line’s Borg and Beck

recommends changing cabin

filters every 12,000 miles

or once a year, and says

that with two types available

workshops can offer their

customers a choice.

The two types are standard

and activated carbon.

Standard filters are made

from fully-synthetic nonwoven

fabric, filtering out

small particles, and as the fibres

are charged they attract

those particles. Activated

carbon filters trap particles

but also harmful gases including

carbon monoxide

and nitrogen oxide. Activated

carbon retains unpleasant

smells too, meaning they

do not enter the car’s

interior.

“If your customers

choose not to

replace the cabin

filter whilst the vehicle

is in for its

routine service,

then they need to be

aware of the possible consequences.

Clogged filers will

reduce the amount of clean

air entering the cabin, which

can lead to the windows

misting more easily, plus

they will notice a greater

level of dust building up as

it will be unable to circulate

and get filtered out,” says

First Line global marketing

manager Jon Roughley.

“Problems with the HVAC

(heating, ventilation and

air conditioning) system

can develop as well, as it

will come under pressure if

the cabin filter is blocked.

Micro-organisms will begin

accumulating in the cabin

as moisture builds up in the

captured particles and becomes

a feeding ground for

mould and bacteria, leading

to the development of unpleasant

odours.”

Bring a new cutting-edge

technical approach to cabin

filters is Sogefi, whose longnamed

Cabin3Tech+ bagged

a nomination at Automochanika’s

Innovation Award.

3Tech uses three layers

comprising a synthetic media,

activated carbon and

a melt-blown electrostatic

layer, the latter trapping the

tiniest particles. The 3Tech

range comprises 56 part

numbers, which are said

to cover 150 million cars in

Europe.

Hella’s two-pronged cabin

filter offering comprises

standard types and its

Hengst Blue.care range features

an electrostatic medium

backed by a filter fleece

for greater dust retention,

while an active carbon layer

tackles vapours and odours.

A ‘biofunctional layer’, containing

nanosilver, completes

the filtration process.

The health-quality is a

message prevalent with

most cabin filter suppliers

and Denso is no exception,

saying filters should be replaced

every 40,000 miles,

and preferably with an upgraded

type.

Denso says regular replacement

will help drivers

and occupants suffering

from asthma or respiratory

problems, especially as its

filters can remove up to 100

percent of dust, pollen and

solid particles as small as

0.01 micrometers.

The demand for filters of

all types broadens with the

car parc, and for workshops

the security of knowing

the filters they need will be

available means fewer sleepless

night, but as Comline

explains bringing new part

numbers to market is not

an easy task.

Getting a new filter onto

the factor’s shelves, then

into its van and off to the

workshop involves detailed

analysis of the car parc to

anticipate future demand.

“This scouting ensures Comline

is continually among the

first-to-market with new filter

applications, which in

turn allows their many motor

factor and partners and

garage fitters to be armed

with the right replacement

filters at the right time,” the

company says.

Working up the product’s

specification and ensuring

its components are of the

right quality is the next task,

but accurate product assembly

also plays a major part,

as the company explains:

“Having the right specification

and materials are only

part of the puzzle; to truly

deliver a top-quality filter,

the manufacturing process

must be equally exceptional.

“Comline’s product development

team plays a

crucial part in selecting the

right production facility by

conducting thorough and

regular audits. Each facility

is visited and inspected

by a member of the Comline

team to guarantee compliance

with the brand’s robust

quality standards.”

Replace regularly for

maximum performance

IF A car’s covering higher than average mileage its

cabin filter will need replacing more often than the one

in a car just pottering down to the shops every now and

then. And, says Denso, a cabin filter’s life is far from

easy, with a car covering 15,000km at 60km/h seeing

the filter refresh an average-sized house up to 300

times a year.

“As dust and dirt builds up, a clogged cabin filter

becomes a lot less efficient. Aside from poorer filtration,

a blocked filter can also make window defogging more

difficult as particles will remain airborne for longer and

there will be less air flow from fan outlets,” Denso says.

Don’t skimp

on braking

system

upgrades

The Garage’s Richard Barnett takes a look at the

braking system and why it’s essential to fit

a complete upgrade kit rather than assemembling

one from numerous component suppliers

No matter how

poorly maintained

much of a

car is, one area

that really cannot

be skimped on is the

braking system. There is a

belief that if a car doesn’t

start that’s one thing, but if

it doesn’t stop that’s something

completely different.

The one thing that hasn’t

changed with braking is the

use of discs and drums,

working with pads and

shoes respectively, powered

by a servo and using fluid to

make the system work. At

the top end ceramic brakes

are the preserve of the fastest

and most expensive cars,

with little incursion into the

aftermarket other than at

some one-make specialists.

While it’s easy to associate

the word ‘upgrade’ almost

exclusively with lighting it

can also be applied to braking,

and AP Racing takes the

view that it’s essential to fit a

complete upgrade kit rather

than assembling a ‘kit’ from

numerous component suppliers.

“It’s no surprise that independent

repairers are

profiting from performance

upgrades – there’s a growing

market for the maintenance

and modification of

high performance roadcars;

work which, for repairers,

is no more challenging than

routine servicing and repair

requests,” says AP Racing

head of engineering, Richard

Joyce.

“It is not uncommon for

customers to source their

own parts and ask the repairer

to fit them. While it

may seem like the customer

is saving money through

this approach, attempting to

fit the wrong part can end

up costlier in the long term.

For any upgrade, repairers

need to ensure all compo-

nents are compatible with

the vehicle being worked on.

For example, it is easy to assume

a braking system will

match the wheel profile of

the vehicle but this will not

always be the case. Careful

attention should be paid to

ensuring that the manufacturer’s

recommended clearance

is adhered to, for easy

and effective fitment.”

The problem for workshops

can be if the customer

supplies their own secondhand

components. With no

documented past installing

28, 29 Breaking.indd 1 14/01/2019 11:30

29 focus Brakes

them can be a risk for both

customer and workshop –

using a proper upgrade kit

gets around those problems,

giving both workshop and

customer peace of mind.

“Once an upgrade kit is

sourced from a reputable

manufacturer, repairers

can take advantage of additional

upsell opportunities

to offer even greater vehicle

performance to customers.

A braking system is only as

good as a vehicle’s tyres, so

if lower grade tyres are fitted,

the full benefit of the

new performance braking

system will not be enjoyed.

This means an opportunity

to offer the customer higher-performing

replacement

tyres,” Joyce says.

“Additional opportunities

also exist for brake pad

replacements. While front

road brake pads are typically

supplied with road upgrade

kits and are specifically

designed to be compatible

with the upgrade caliper,

rear pads traditionally are

not. However, it is recommended

that repairers also

upgrade rear pads for optimised

braking performance.

Tackling counterfeiters isn’t an easy

task, but for the past three years AP

Racing has met the challenge head-on

“Back in 2016 we introduced an anti-counterfeiting

solution to all our products, which is essentially a data

matrix label we apply to each caliper we manufacture.

This holds data within a QR code, pertaining to

production information with a unique reference

indicating which production cell the part was developed

within,’ says the company’s Richard Joyce.

“Using the AP Racing smartphone app, repairers can

scan each product they receive from us and register it

to access confirmation that it is a genuine ‘new first fit’

AP Racing part. Using this system, we can keep track

of all our products to ensure we are doing our bit to

eradicate any non-genuine brake parts from the market.”

Sensors become more sophisticated

The modern motorist often lacks

the mechanical understandings of

their forebears, and the introduction

of the brake pad sensor meant the

motorist knew when their car’s

brake pads were getting near the

end of their service life. While a

groove cut into the friction material

offers a simple method of showing

wear it puts the onus on the

workshop to check.

Putting a metal plate in the

compound so that the brakes squeal

when they are at their most worn

gives an audible warning while the

introduction of sensors in the 1970s

which, through electrical contacts,

could trip a warning light on the

dashboard, gives the driver warning

their car’s brakes were getting near

the limit.

Sensors are still in use today

but, as Elta Automotive points out,

they have come a long way from

the earliest ones. Now in two-stage

guise they use parallel resisitor

circuits, one at a lower level of wear,

the second at the highest level.

“By working in conjunction

with the first circuit of the brake

pad wear sensor and considering

wheel speed, brake pressure and

temperature information, as well as

the distance already covered by the

pads, the vehicle’s DSC (dynamic

stability control) module calculates

the estimated lifespan of brake pad

and predicted replacement interval.

This is often displayed to the driver

via the car’s information system,”

Elta says.

Elta highlights the importance of

regular sensor inspection, and that

the sensors should be changed if

there is any sign of damage, and

replaced when pads are changed.

TRIPLE APPOINTMENT HIGHLIGHTS

BRIGHT FUTURE

The impressive momentum

that ELTA

Automotive Ltd has

gained during an exciting

2018, shows no

sign of slowing down as the

‘champion of the independent’,

has recruited three experienced

aftermarket ‘heavyweights’ for

its senior sales and commercial

roles, to strengthen the already

experienced team.

In the space of a month, the

company has reappointed Stuart

Poole as commercial manager

and Mike Ballinger as its

director of sales for Europe, as

well as recruiting Craig O’Neil

as the director of sales in the

UK and Ireland.

Commenting on the triple

Stuart Poole

appointment, ELTA’s Managing

Director, Ian Hallam said:

“A monumental year for the

business, which began with the

lunch of our premium quality

VISIONPRO and VXPRO

brands and continued with the

conclusion of our management

buyout (MBO), has culminated

in the addition of three key

personnel, who together, will

ensure that our upward trajectory

remains on course for the

long term.”

Mike has been in the industry

for more than 30 years

Mike Ballinger

and was a key player at ELTA

during its dramatic rise in the

early 2000s. Having spent time

with leading brands such as

ECOBAT and TRICO, he has

a wealth of aftermarket knowledge.

After cutting his teeth in the

franchised dealer sector, Craig

spent more than 11 years with

Ring, initially as an area sales

manager. His rise through the

ranks encompassed roles including

business development

manager and latterly, key accounts

manager, thus emphasising

his obvious aftermarket

acumen.

Stuart has re-joined the business

after spending a year of

Craig O’Neil

invaluable experience at ATS

Euromaster, which allows him

to bring another dimension to

the overall team.

Both new directors were keen

to express their confidence in

the company and belief that

ELTA is on the cusp of a particularly

exciting period of its

25-year history, which will see

it grow rapidly as it responds

to the opportunities its recent

development and repositioning

has made possible in the UK

and crucially, Europe.

“It was obvious from the moment

Ian announced the MBO,

that with business partner

Vladimír Palacka alongside the

rejuvenated team, ELTA had

recaptured the spirit that led

to its initial success,” explained

Mike.

“With complete control of the

Lucas bulb, wiper and switchgear

programmes across all

markets, we are in a fantastic

position to offer a tremendous

range with unrivalled heritage,

which will open many doors for

us to introduce our own VX-

PRO and VISIONPRO brands.

With this combination, we can

not only offer a complete engine

management solution, but

are able to introduce complementary

products, such as our

new heater resistors/controllers

and brake wear sensors,

quickly and effectively.”

Continuing the theme, Craig

added: “With a reinvigorated

team and a multi-brand offering,

the ELTA proposition is

powerful and appealing to independents

looking for a business

that is on their wavelength

and cares about their interests.

“We understand the market

and are flexible, so able to offer

a tailored approach that

allows them to take advantage

of the real opportunities that

exist. This way, both sides benefit

and both businesses grow,

which is how solid relationships

and long term business

partnerships are won.”

The final word goes to Ian:

“With our VISIONPRO/VXPRO

programme and the Lucas

brand in our armoury, ELTA

provides a premium quality

solution for the independent

wholesaler and their workshop

customers. With such an offering

we also need the very best

in personnel and with the appointment

of Craig and Mike

to head our UK and European

sales teams and Stuart as commercial

manager, we now have

the complete proposition.”

Mandy Dean is appointed Marketing director, Ford of Britain

In her new role, Mandy

will be responsible for all

of Ford’s product and

communication marketing

within the UK, reporting to

Andy Barratt, chairman and

managing director, Ford of

Britain.

Mandy replaces Lisa

Brankin, who was appointed

Sales director, Ford of Britain

following the retirement

of Kevin Griffin.

In her previous role as

Marketing Communications

manager, Ford of Britain,

Mandy led the all-new Focus

“Beauty of Change” Campaign

as well as the Ford and

Time to Change“ Elephant in

the Transit” campaign, raising

the awareness of mental

health.

“I am delighted to announce

Mandy’s appointment,

she has wealth of

experience and she enters

the role at an exciting and

challenging time for the UK,

Ford’s largest market in Europe,”

said Andy Barratt.

Mandy joined Ford in

1995 on an undergraduate

programme, completing two

part-time degrees; a Ba(hons)

Business degree and an MSc

in Executive Management.

After graduating, and

working in various roles in

Manufacturing, Purchasing

and Logistics, Dean moved

to Sales and Marketing in

2000. Performing a variety of

different roles from Communications,
