Calke Abbey Estate
Location: Calke Abbey Estate, Derbyshire
Project: Structural Repairs & Maintenance
Project Length: 6 Weeks
Information: Bridge Number 1 lies within the National Trust’s Calke
Abbey Estate, a typical working country estate. The bridge had deteriorated over time
due to the increased loading of farm traffic since the bridge was initially constructed.
Environmental management was of great concern to both the National Trust and
Restoration Projects during this project as it was important to maintain the aesthetic
features of the bridge, while protecting the local environment during the construction
phase.
Working to very strict controls the project involved preparing the existing ground and
bridge barrel arch to accept a new reinforced concrete slab that spanned the width of
the bridge to help spread the load when vehicles cross.
Once the concrete slab had sufficiently cured a new tarmac finish was laid down and
seamlessly worked into the existing road to a fine finish.
Sections of the wall were re-built and the whole bridge was re-pointed with lime mortar
to ensure it would not deteriorate any further.

The project involved major restoration works to both
the external and internal areas of the property. Work was further complicated due to the
building being a Grade II Listed
Property and as such under very strict planning restrictions
and standards.
The work was completed to the great satisfaction of the owner. Quote taken from a local
publication on the project:
Successful transformations for private home owners have included the renovation of a
neglected Victorian house in the High Peak for a high profile local businessman.
"The place was habitable, but it hadn't been touched for 30 years," said the client. "Adam and
his team restored both the exterior and the interior to their former glory and have given us a
wonderful family house with all the advantages of modern living, but in keeping with the
aesthetics of the property."
He added: "The service has been second to none. Adam and his team listened carefully and then
delivered exactly what we wanted."
