LATEST NEWS & WHAT’S BREWING
FOUR CHEERS (YEARS!)
FOR TAYLOR’S…
RAM TAM
As I write this I am approaching four years with
Timothy Taylor’s (I joined 1 December 2014). To say
that the time has flown by would be an understatement.
When I was lucky enough to get the role, I was told
that it was the best job in brewing and I can’t argue
with that. I have the privilege of working with the most
dedicated and passionate team in the industry, ‘All for
that taste of Taylor’s.’
When I joined Taylor’s, I had the fortune of arriving
just after Boltmaker had been crowned CAMRA
Champion Beer of Britain (August 2014) and there was
a tremendous amount of excitement in the brewery as
a result of the win. This was helped by the fact that we
had the capacity to meet the new-found demand that
came with the prize and, totally coincidentally, had just
launched the bottled version.
It is fair to say that while Boltmaker has always been
a favourite with our brewing team, up until the win it
was languishing in the shadows of Landlord and there
was even a doubt as to whether we could continue to
produce it, given the dwindling demand.
The victory certainly gave it a new lease of life; with
orders and guest slots coming from every direction.
It allowed us to re-introduce it to both publicans and
consumers and allowed them to discover that every
great Taylor’s beer doesn’t have to start with the letter
‘L’! The proof of its renewal, and evidence that the
demand for Boltmaker has survived the novelty of
its 2014 win, is that in our last financial year we sold
significantly more Boltmaker than in the year in which
it was named Champion Beer of Britain; a feat we will
repeat this year.
It is ironic that the success of a traditional beer such
as Boltmaker (previously known as ‘Best Bitter’) also
proved the inspiration for the brewery to discover a
new spirit of innovation, which led to the installation
of a small-scale brewery, a number of trials and,
ultimately, several new beers including Knowle Spring
Blonde and our Taylor Made range.
None of this is to diminish Landlord, clearly our Crown
Jewel. When it was made public that I was coming to
Timothy Taylor’s, I received an email from a friend
living near Cambridge. He said, “I am a Real Ale fan and
Landlord is my favourite. When it comes on as a guest
ale in our local it lasts literally hours as we all get down
there to ensure that we quaff our fair share!”
Earlier this year we bottled
Ram Tam for the very first
time. We made it available
exclusively on our web shop as a
single variant or in a mixed case
with our regulars: Landlord,
Boltmaker and Knowle Spring.
Ram Tam is wholesome and
satisfying, a perfectly balanced,
mellow dark beer with body and
depth. It has a fruity, toasted
aroma with hints of chocolate,
citrus and roasted malts on the
tongue. With the nights drawing
in and the weather on the turn,
it’s the perfect winter warmer!
BOTTLES BRING HOME THE MEDALS AT
THE BRITISH BOTTLING INSTITUTE AWARDS
We are proud to announce our new range of beers
were a huge success at the British Bottling Institute
competition. Our Taylor Made Range and Knowle
Spring Blonde collectively grabbed four awards
for bottled beers. The beer tasting part of the
competition saw our delicious Knowle Spring 4.2%
ABV take Gold, while our new Taylor Made ales
Cook Lane IPA 5.8% ABV and Poulter’s Porter 4.8%
ABV took home Silver. Our Taylor Made range - Cook
Lane IPA, Poulter’s Porter and 1858 Brown Ale was
also awarded a diploma for packaging design.
Head Brewer Andrew Leman said: “We have never had four award wins at the same competition
before. We’ve often come away with two, but never four, so this is a great achievement. We are all
really pleased with Knowle Spring Blonde being handed a gold in beer tasting. It is such a tough
market and is so hard to receive gold status. Cook Lane IPA and Poulter’s Porter were also given
a silver.”
Andrew went on to say, “The Taylor Made family were also awarded as a collection with a
diploma in packaging. This is very rewarding for all the hard work that has gone into this new
range. It is always great to be recognised and this highlights the fantastic work our marketing
team has done with the design.”
Not surprising. Research undertaken when I joined
the brewery highlighted that Landlord had the highest
proportion of drinkers who regarded it as ‘their
favourite ale’ with their main issue being that they
often couldn’t find it. Our sales team are working
extremely hard to address this challenge assisted by
our new Champion Club initiative that recognises and
rewards publicans for their commitment.
So, four years in, I am the luckiest man in the
industry. It is only left for me to thank all of you;
our shareholders, employees, partners, suppliers,
customers, and consumers—for your support during
the past four years and, I hope, your continued support
in the years to come.
A SUITE OF WINS AT THE
2018 SIBA NORTH EAST
BEER COMPETITION
One award from the Society of Independent Brewers
is great, but to come away with three is a real
honour. Ram Tam cask ale won Gold in the dark
beers category, bottled 1858 Brown Ale won Bronze
and bottled Landlord won Silver, at the York Beer
Festival, SIBA Awards this year.

MARKING 160 YEARS OF BREWING
Many of you have been in touch to say how much you are enjoying our Taylor Made range.
These are small batch brews utilising different hop varieties and malts, all still brewed with
that distinctive ‘Taste of Taylor’s’.
2018 marks 160 years since we started brewing, so as part of the range we have brewed ‘1858’
in celebration of this iconic year. 1858 is our modern, beefed up take on a traditional brown
ale. Stronger brown ales are a growing trend in the US and our brewers wanted to introduce
a higher gravity, easier drinking version of this popular ale back into the UK. With it’s rich
notes, 1858 pairs perfectly with Roast or Belly Pork, great for a Sunday lunch. The beer was
on draught to the end of October but will continue to be available as a 330ml bottle all year
round. Bottles are available from Ocado and our web shop www.timothytaylorshop.co.uk.
HONOURING PRIVATE POULTER
As a result of its popularity in winter 2017, Poulter’s Porter makes its return on draught
in December. The brew is made in honour of Private Poulter, a Timothy Taylor’s employee
at the time of the First World War. He was a stretcher bearer in the Duke of Wellington’s
4th Battalion. The Battalion fought in defence of the small French town of Erquingham-
Lys during the great German offensive. Private Poulter courageously carried 10 wounded
comrades to safety under heavy enemy fire and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his
heroism. When asked afterwards where he got his strength from, he put
it down to his days working for Timothy Taylor’s maltings carrying heavy
sacks of barley!
Poulter’s Porter 4.8% ABV.
A rich, dark, warming beer with hints of chocolate, coffee and liquorice.
Hops – Goldings, Fuggles and Styrian Golding.
Malts – Pale, Brown, Chocolate and Crystal Rye.
It is also available from Ocado and our webshop all year round.
Not forgetting of course, Cook Lane IPA, named after the site of our first
brewery in Keighley. This IPA has a more gentle flavour profile that many
of the extreme, hoppy IPAs.
If you fancy trying all three Taylor Made brews why not treat yourself to
the mixed case of 12 bottles - 4 x 1858 Brown Ale, 4 x Cook Lane IPA and
4 x Poulter’s Porter, available from www.timothytaylorshop.co.uk
Pete, the landlord at Judson’s of Pocklington,
Senior Brewer.
The creation was Judson’s Champion Bitter
CLOSING TIME AT THE BURLINGTON
Tina Peacock sadly called time at the bar of the Burlington, Keighley
for the last time on Tuesday 31st July 2018. Tina’s parents Gordon and
Christine Peacock took over the tenancy of the Burlington Arms, in
Market Street Keighley, in October 1979, with Tina taking the reins
in 2004. The pub was well known for, amongst other things, its
‘dominoes’ school.
After nearly 40 years trading as one of Timothy Taylor’s tenants, Tina was
sad to close the doors but is looking forward to spending more time with
her father and enjoying some well-earned rest.

BOWLING GREEN, CHORLTON
After a major refurbishment the Bowling Green in Chorlton re-opened
36) having gone to the Bowling Green five days a week at lunchtime for his
favourite tipple - half a pint of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord! At over 100 years
young, he puts his youthfulness down to drinking our ale!
Hare & Hounds, Wadsworth
THE HARE & HOUNDS, WADSWORTH
Earlier this year, The Hare & Hounds, Wadsworth received some smart new
brand signage. This is part of Timothy Taylor’s roll out scheme across our
entire pub estate. Sitting on the edge of the Calderdale Way, the Hare and
Hounds is a typical country inn offering good homemade food and Taylor’s
fine cask ales. Each of the five en-suite rooms has stunning, panoramic
views and the Stoodley Pike monument can be seen across the valley from
the patio. With its dramatic setting, the Hare and Hounds is an idyllic base
from which to explore Hebden Bridge, the Pennines and the surrounding
countryside. The pub offers all of Timothy Taylor’s beers, but not all at the
same time, alternating from week to week. They have also recently won
CAMRA Halifax and Calderdale Pub of the Season, for Summer 2018.
It’s always great to meet Timothy Taylor’s lovers from across the world!
After meeting Dave Osmond whilst visiting Wilmslow and finding out he
MISSION HIMALAYAS - 2018
This autumn The Royal British Legion’s Battle Back Centre and Leeds Beckett
University lead a team of 13 serving wounded, injured and sick (WIS) military
personnel and armed forces veterans, on a challenging, month long expedition to the
Himalayas. We were very pleased to welcome one of the local training teams at the
Woolly Sheep in Skipton as they passed through on a training trek, they of course
enjoyed a pint of Taylor’s as well as delicious bite to eat.
The expedition culminated in the summiting of Mera Peak on 11 November – which
this year marked both Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, poignantly they
raised a Legion flag to coincide with the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Many of those selected had received support from the Legion’s Battle Back Centre, a leading centre
for the recovery and physical and mental well-being of both serving WIS and veterans. The expedition
challenged all involved to explore what they were capable of achieving both as a team and as individuals.
Senior Research Fellow and local Chris Kay (featured) worked closely with expedition team members
to understand the way in which the expedition influences the individuals recovery & personal growth.
SKIPTON BEER FESTIVAL
APRIL 2018
Once again, Timothy Taylor’s was on the bar at the 12th Annual Skipton
Beer Festival, which this year ran from 12th - 14th April 2018 at Ermysted’s
Grammar School. Seeing up to 1,500 visitors over the 3 day event, there
were 75 ales to choose from including, of course, our own Timothy Taylor’s
Dark Mild, Boltmaker, Landlord, Ram Tam and Cook Lane. Well done to the
organisers for another superb local beer festival enjoyed by all.

have heard about our enviable reputation
for brewing great beers.”
Ei ROADSHOWS
Timothy Taylor’s took part in a series of ‘Ei Live’ events up and down the
UK earlier this year. We were keen to support Ei as they are a very large
national pub operator and one of our biggest customers. We showcased our
classic line up of ales, plus introduced our new Taylor Made range to the
Ei publicans.
Rob Oxer & Gordon McCallum
Here are our sales team at the Olympia trade show. It is always great to get
out and about meeting publicans to find out what is going on in the market.
CRAFT BEER RISING 2018
For the first time Timothy Taylor’s attended Craft Beer Rising at
the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, Shoreditch, London 2018,
showcasing our Taylor Made range. The reception was tremendous,
from the suited city slickers to overseas visitors who have all heard
about our enviable reputation for brewing great beers. Renowned
beer writer Pete Brown wrote in his blog that out of the 350 breweries
attending it was nice to see the traditional family brewers serving up
great beers and he cited ours, particularly 1858 Brown Ale, as some of
the best at the festival. Praise indeed!
We will be returning in 2019 and the date has just been announced as
21st - 23rd February. In response to many requests, we will be taking
the jewel in our crown, Landlord.
What on earth have
lightsabers got to do
with brewing beer?
It may seem a little excessive, but we check
every last cask with what we call our lightsaber.
But it’s not from a galaxy far, far away. It’s an
ultraviolet light used by our brewing team
to inspect our casks for absolute cleanliness.
Only when it has passed the lightsaber test
is a cask considered worthy of becoming
home to 72 pints of freshly brewed Landlord.
With a beer as finely balanced in flavour as
Taylor’s, coaxed from the purest Pennine
spring water, aromatic hops and finest
barley, we can’t help being just a little picky.
Fuggles farmer foils
attack of the killer wilt
In our eyes, farmer Tom Spilsbury is a hero
worthy of immortalising as a statue. Over the
past few decades, the killer wilt virus has
decimated acres of English Fuggles hops –
an ingredient crucial to the Taylor’s taste.
Thankfully, Tom agreed to plant two new yards
of Fuggles, specifically for us, in soil elevated
above local rivers. This protects our hops
from any wilt attacks spreading from land
upstream. So we can keep brewing with the
Fuggles that give Landlord its inimitable flavour.
Here’s to Tom Spilsbury, hops hero, beer legend.
SPENT GRAINS
Did you know? Here at the brewery
nothing goes to waste. All our spent
grain from brewing our beer is used
for animal feed.
Various local farmers call by weekly
and collect the spent grains direct
from the brewery, and the animals
love it! It’s highly nutritious for them
too. Here is local farmer Chris Drake
feeding his cattle their tasty treat.
HARVEST TIME
Golding Variety, Fuggles and Goldings.
TAYLOR’S ON
BRC FOOD SAFETY CERTIFICATION FARMERS’ VISIT FEBRUARY 2018
James Ward our QA-Co-ordinator at Timothy Taylor’s, was delighted
to announce that we were recently awarded the highest grade of AA
for the BRC Global Standard for food safety. This year will mark the
fourth year of Taylor’s operating the BRC Standard and the fourth year
of maintaining the highest grade. His QA role is dedicated to ensuring
food safety throughout the entire brewing process. He works closely
with the Brewers to produce beer brewed consistently to the highest
standards of quality. All for that taste of Taylor’s.
Timothy Taylor’s hosted a visit for all our farmers of Northumberland, Lowland
Scotland, Fife and further North, who together grow our barley, Golden Promise.
Collectively the farmers supply our long standing partner, Simpsons Malt, who
carry out the malting process and deliver the ingredients to us ready for brewing.
The group always enjoy coming down to meet the brewery team. They received
a talk from our experts as well as a brewery tour to show them how their very
special barley is turned into our fabulous beers.
serving Yorkshire Timothy Taylor’s Ale in Suffolk.
There are no other pubs in the area that stock
Taylor’s, so my customers will travel between
customer who is 83 years young who catches the
only two buses a day to get here and back each
day, just to drink Timothy Taylor’s!” He feels that
being the only stockist in the area is what brings
customers to the Swan. CAMRA also made the
around. Landlady Tanya says the beers add quality
travelling from a wide area just to get beer from
