MESSAGE FROM
THE BOARD
Mohandes
Board
Dear Kanoon’s members,
We have made the new
constitution and passed by
members last May. Thank
you all who were volunteers
to prepare and polish
it and the members to study
and approve it. Also we established
the main structure
of that during last month
and now working on developing
the details.
We made one big step on
the new constitution for
improving Kanoon’s performance.
By election and
establishing the Board Of
Trustees, Mohandes would
be able to utilize the experience
of well known members
for it’s gaols and with
the many years of experience
concentrated on Board
Of Trustees this can be a
good opportunity to engage
Mohandes with other active
organizations in community
too.
Kanoon’s main focus is on
newcomer engineers to be
settled down when using
the opportunity of having
more experienced members
for networking and
organizing professional
seminars.
Many of us have used Kanoon’s
network to develop
our professional and
career opportunities with
peers, and now is the best
time to “Give Back” to it.
Kanoon’s activities relies
on members contributions
on membership fees
and donations. We would
like to invite all associate
members to become
an active member or be
a volunteer for Kanoon’s
developing programs. We
look forward to working
together to achieve our
goals.
Best wishes,
Mohandes Board of Trustees
Board of Trustees is the supreme supervising body
of Mohndes comprised of well known, well trusted
and well respected members of the society
By Mohammad Kamyab
In our new Mohndes Constitution which
was passed at our last General Assembly
there is a new body alled “Board of Trustees”
and it is described as:
Board of Trustees is the supreme supervising
body of Mohndes comprised of well
known, well trusted and well respected
members of the society
Board of Trustees is composed of six individuals
elected by general assembly and
three appointed members
Elected members of BOT take responsibility
for a three-year term. Appointed members
serve in one-year terms. There would be no
limitation for extension of their appointment.
Board of Trustees is the highest body of
MOHANDES that examines and supervises
activities and performance of other bodies
within MOHANDES. Some of the duties of
BOT are:
a – To oversee General assembly meetings
and examine its compliance to this constitution.
b – To oversee Board of Directors and its
subordinate committees.
c – To examine minutes of the meetings of
BOD and any committee working within the
framework of MOHANDES.
d – To examine and inspect financial records
and prepare annual report for the Members
General Assembly.
e – Any member of BOT can be present in
any BOD meeting or committee meeting,
with or without prior notice. BOT member
will be present only as observer without voting
right.
f – BOT is the highest authority to deal with
complains and investigate reports of any
wrongdoing within the framework of MO-
HANDES.
g – Due to sensitivity of the information
forwarded to the BOT, strict confidentiality
of information is implemented and no information
regarding current events or decisions
or complains should be disclosed not only
to outsiders but also banned from disclosure
inside the MOHANDES family.
h – At any time BOT can hire a professional
accountant (CPA) to inspect and audit financial
matters of MOHANDES.
In our September 2018 General Assembly
the following members were elected as the
first BOT members
1- Dr. Arsalan Mohajer
2- Mrs. Lily Nabavi
3- Mr. Hossain Zershkian
4- Mr. Addullah Hamidi
5- Mr. Esmaeli Zahedi
6- Mr. Mohammad Kamyab
I would like to add that we have been
honoured to have Dr. Moridi as our first
appointed members. We are in process of selecting
two other appointed members soon.
Mohandes fundraising cocktail party and
the celebration of Mohandes 30th Anniversary
were held on Wed, April 11th at the
Sheraton Hotel from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Many
dignitaries including Ministers, City officials,
community leaders and artists graced the occasion
with their presence and support. Also a
number of Mohandes founders along with most
of the long lasting members attended and supported
the fundraising.
Ms. Lili Nabavi, was the Master of Ceremony
and she recited some poems of Hafez, accompanied
by Mr. Nader Naderi’s piano. After
welcoming remarks by Mr. Mahboob Bolandi,
the president of the 30th board and acting chair
of the fundraising committee and Mr. Mohammad
Kamyab, the past president, the attendees
enjoyed the music performances in the first part
of the program.
In the second part, Mr Bolandi told the story of
a birth in 1988, where couple of the founders
decided to bring Iranian engineers and architects
in Toronto together and establish Kanoon
Mohandes Fundraising
Cocktail Party 2018
Mohandes. Then he gave a thorough report of
Mohandes activities in recent years and invited
Dr. Reza Moridi, Minister of Research and Innovation
to introduce the honorary guest of the
night, his worship John Tory, mayor of Toronto.
“The Iranian Engineers and Architects have
contributed very positively in many ways in the
economy of Ontario, and specially GTA, and
when I greet with Iranians in different community
occasions, a good fraction of them happen
to have engineering background” mentioned
Mayor Tory in his speech. He also congratulated
the 30th anniversary to all the members and
thanked the efforts Mohandes volunteers and
directors have done to serve its membership
and presented the certificate of appreciation to
Mr. Bolandi.
This event was organized to raise funds to
better serve Mohandes members through its
ongoing activities and around 57k was raised
in the form of donations and sponsorships with
the support of individuals and companies who
believe in Mohandes objectives.
Changiz Sadr was named
“Officer of the PEO Order of Honour”
or his valuable voluntary contributions to
F the community and engineering profession,
Changiz Sadr, P.Eng., FEC, TOGAF, CISSP, of
Willowdale, has been named an Officer of the
Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of
Honour. He was inducted into the Order at an
April 20 gala in Toronto.
Since his induction into the Order as a Member in
2011, Sadr has continued his devoted service to
the profession as an East Central Region Councillor
for two terms and as a member of several
committees, including the Audit, Finance, Discipline
and Executive committees. He is also a
member of the Experience Requirements Committee
and serves on the interview panel for networking
and communications engineering.
He extended his volunteer work by chairing the
Regional Councilors Committee and by serving
as PEO liaison on the council of the Ontario Association
of Certified Engineering Technicians
and Technologists.
8 MOHANDES MAGAZINE
A devoted advocate for diversity within the profession,
Sadr remains invested in PEO’s licensing
process. He assists many newcomers to Canada
by helping them prepare for the Professional
Practice Exam and document their engineering
experience required for licensure. He also volunteers
with settlement agencies as a mentor for
new immigrant professionals and engineering
graduates.
After more than two decades of volunteer work,
Sadr says the most rewarding experience was seeing
the trust other members had in him. “Volunteering
means to give without any expectations
and therefore there are not any personal gains in
it,” he explains. “All I wanted for PEO was its betterment
in whatever way I could help.”
The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals
who have rendered conspicuous service to the
engineering profession. The rank of Officer is bestowed
upon those who have served the profession
for many years and whose sustained leadership
has contributed greatly to its operation or
improvement in its status.

I believe the reasons Mohandes stands for a
long time was the passionate members and its
simple but fundamental mandates. Such a mandate
did not need high cash flow but needed
hard working BOD. Election process which
lead the BOD experience flows from one team
of BOD to another one have helped such mandates
flow well. In respond to the reason(s) of
rise and fall of Mohandes, looking to the member
numbers and diary of Mohandes for a long
time, I do not see a large fluctuation but gradual
addition of tasks to the BOD missions and flaws
in process of continuation of the mandates from
one team to another one, sometimes caused a
phenomenon which interpret as disturbance.
3 – What is your opinion about the new
Mohandes constitution?
New Mohandes Bylaws with new vision and
multiple missions needed more teamwork more
planning , more human and fund resources and
more BOD to BOD continuation process which
I hope BOT can help on.
4 – What suggestions do you have to attract
more newcomers and new graduates?
Second generation members and media marketing
could help much while successful new mandates
will automatically absorb new members.
Interview with
Mohammad H. Kamyab
oldest, most occupied group with a very good
name in the Iranian community of GTA and has
a very unique characteristic.
Most of our old members have a very emotional
tie with this organization and would like to see
the improvement and grow of this association.
To describe this unique characteristic, I like to
modify one quote from John F. Kennedy, Late
President of USA and that is that our faithful
members never ask what Mohndes has done for
us but what we could do for Mohndes. I think
this is a big gift we have and have saved us during
all those years.
1– Would you please introduce yourself
and tell us when did you join Mohandes.
I am Mohammad H. Kamyab and I have a BS in
EE and MBA with more than 40 years of working
experience in USA, Iran and Canada
I have been active as a Consulting Engineer in
fields of Project Management, Project Control,
Quality
Assurance and Quality Control.
I started to be a member of Mohandes after 3
month of my landing in Canada 21 years ago
and have been in different position as BOD
member, Chairmen of the Board and Senior Advisor
Mohndes. Last September I was honoured
to be elected as one of the members of Board of
Trustees of Mohndes
2 – What do you see as reason(s) for
mohandes resilience despite its ups and
downs?
I think every organization in their long period of
existence will experiment ups and downs. But
in my experience of being with Mohndes for so
many years, I have seen that when we have had
an active BOD we were up and down otherwise.
I have always mentioned that Mohndes is the
3 – What is your opinion about the new Mohandes
constitution?
The old Constitution was as old as Mohndes itself
and needed to be changed. The emphasis
of the old Constitution was mostly about “new
comers” which was a right approach in1988. But
our community has changed. We have newcomers
of course but we should also deal with many
Iranian engineers who are living here for more
than 30 or 35 years. We should address their
needs too with a very wide vision for the future.
I think this new version of Constitution which
was written with the help of group of specialist
during many months of group meetings reflects
the current and future needs of Mohandes as a
progressive group of professionals. To implement
the new Constitution we should consider
that we have some written rules and regulations
and should be able to put them into action. We
should follow our objectives which have been
chosen very carefully and in details. We need to
organize our BOD, BOT and our members to actively
participate and help. We should be able to
functionalize the “Committees” and make them
in a way to operate as they are described in the
Constitution. We have a lot to do and we need a
lot of help.
10 MOHANDES MAGAZINE
Mohandes soccer group
4 – What suggestions do you have to attract
more newcomers and new graduates?
First we should inform them about the existence
of our organization Mohandes. Most new comers
and new graduates do not know about us.
For new comers we need to let them know about
Mohndes and invite them to our meetings, seminars
and committees with ads in local newspapers
and Social Medias. Last BOD started to
create Mohandes Ambassadors in different universities
which was a very creative and a good
way of introducing Mohndes to them. Different
committees should have technical and educational
seminars for their members.
2nd we should address their needs to introduce
them to the professional working culture of Canadian
Industry by workshops, seminars and
other means. We should help them to span their
networking and their contacts which are very effective
tools for them to find jobs.
For them to see the actual working environment
of industrial works in Canada, we should organize
trips by different tours to factories and industrial
shops. At the same time we should help
them in their social life by organizing different
social life, sports and recreational activities.
The above more or less is now practicing in
Mohndes and their committees but I think we
need more work to be done.
At the end with many thanks for the hard work
of our BOD, I wish more success for Mohndes in
the years ahead.
Annual report by civil group
By Afshin Khodabandeh
During the year 2018, Civil group, as a member of Special Interests Committee of MOHANDES,
has conducted several activities. In this group, there are always events either being planned or
executed. One of the biggest achievements of this group is its expansion which right now has more
than 430 members in the group’s Telegram account and is still growing.
Civil group also has an active Facebook page and a Linkedin group page with 160 members.
Civil group has a bi-monthly newsletter, published on the first day of odd-numbered months. It is
a modest internal bulletin that tries to provide up to date information about group’s activities while
provides a platform to hold members together. So far we have managed to publish twelve issues of
the newsletter, thanks to a few active members.
On June 2018, Dr Behnam Amini former head of the group was elected as member of the Board of
Directors of Mohandes, consequently Mr. Hamid Hemati became Head of the group and Mr. Abbas
Aftab-Jahani became head of the educational committee. Right now the group is governed by the
Civil Council composed of Afshin Khodabandeh, Behnam Amini, Hamid Hemati and Abbas Aftab
Jahani.
Civil engineering group also carries out professional seminars. Thanks to some of our colleagues
like Khodabandeh, Hemati, Aftab Jahani, Karimi, Torabizadeh and Daliri, the Educational-Training
committee conducts monthly professional seminars focusing on technical subjects. The seminars
performed in the past several months are: Geotechnical engineering by Farbod Saadat on January,
Traffic Engineering by Behnam Amini on February, Earthquake engineering by Farid Rezaeian
on March, Monitoring of structures by Afshin Sadri on April, Earthquake engineering by Pourang
Ezzatfar on May, Geotechnical risks by Masoud Manzari on June, Non-destructive tests by Hamed
Laysee and Farid Moradi on July, Geotextiles by Reza Mahmoudipour on August, Curtainwalls by
Moin Roohparvar on September, Welding Inspection by Faramarz Rahiminia on October and panelized
wall systems by Fadi Nabhan on November.
Civil engineering group also conducted a very successful full day workshop about highlights of
Part nine of the Ontario Building Code on January.
We civil engineers as part of the Kanoon MOHANDES, are proud of our achievements while
keeping our momentum to become better and more inclusive.
Why Limestone Becomes
More Popular These days
By Reza Hosseinnejad, PhD.
A
S the premier construction material, natural
stone is held in high regard because it
reflects unique character, stability, and grandeur—qualities
each lover of stone embodies.
Its variations in color, pattern, and texture are
impossible to replicate, making natural stone
1-Stone and the Environment: As a natural
product, it is inherently earth-friendly. Natural
stone currently offers many attractive, environmentally
friendly attributes, including an
enduring life-cycle, durability, ease of care and
maintenance, recyclability, and quarry and
more visually interesting, and because it comes
from the earth, its eco-friendly composition
makes it the natural choice.
In this article we talk about Limestone with
concentrating on Indiana Limestone, one of the
largest and famous limestone in the world.
There is a verity of reason that make stone especially
limestone Stone very popular as follow:
manufacturing best practices.
Using natural stone shows that you take responsibility
to care for the earth by actively
striving to preserve, restore or improve the
natural environment. Conserving resources,
preventing pollution, and minimizing waste are
some ways the stone industry is working to be
eco-friendly through green building.
2-Natural Beauty: The neutral color of limestone
is warm, coupled with the fact that it ages
28 MOHANDES MAGAZINE
gracefully and naturally, makes Limestone the
ideal choice for all types of projects.
3-Consistency: Most of Limestone is extremely
homogenous. This is important, not only for
the current project being built, but particularly
when future expansions are contemplated. For
another building, landscape stones, in perimeter
walls, or even as site fill. It’s completely inert
– it came from nature and can go back to the
same. And it’s common in restoration projects
for the majority of the original stone to remain
in place for continued use when the restoration
example, Indiana Limestone exhibits no preferential
direction of splitting and can be cut and
carved in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
Thus, it can be sawed, planed, turned on a lathe
or hand worked to match the requirements
of demanding architectural designs. Indiana
Limestone has proven its use from simple
treads and pavers to landscaping structures
and bridges to soaring cathedrals, over and
over again.
4-Sustainability: Since the opening of the first
organized quarry in 1827, Indiana Limestone –
“The Nation’s Building Stone” – has been in almost
constant use and has made a huge impact
on American and Canadian architecture.
5-Durability: Indiana Limestone projects exist
in every North America city, in smaller towns
and villages, in Canada and in every type of
atmosphere.
6-Low life cycle cost: Limestone is virtually
maintenance-free, requiring only the occasional
re-pointing of stone joints and cleaning, if
desired. With proper installation and minimal
care, Indiana Limestone projects will serve
present and future generations for many years
to come.
7-Recycable: Limestone can be taken from one
project and re-used on another, as elements in
work is completed.
8-Environmentally friendly: Improved technology
has resulted in a more environmentally
friendly industry. Most fabrication companies
recycle their water, and many have air-handling
systems in their mills. Quarry land is often
reclaimed, either for use as land for quarry
offices and outbuildings, or as nature preserves.
The use of modern production equipment has
resulted in overall noise reduction as well.
Summery:
These days in the industry of stones, Indiana
limestone is part of a high-end market. It is
mostly used on the exterior of homes and commercial
buildings. Many of buildings, such
as the Empire State Building, the Pentagon,
Yankee Stadium, and the Washington National
Cathedral. In addition, 35 of the 50 state capitol
buildings are made of Indiana limestone.
Life on Active Faults: Connecting the Iranian
diaspora to give hope and to help reduce, or
mitigate the effects of natural disasters
By Arsalan Mohajer, PhD., D.I.C., P.Geo.
Earthquakes don’t kill, weak buildings do – poorly constructed buildings can be viewed as ticking
time bombs, for vulnerable communities in certain active fault zones in Iran and elsewhere
around the world. A comparative review of rates of casualties’ shows destructive impact in Iran is
much higher than other earthquake prone countries that are better prepared.
Yet again, on November 12, 2017 at 16:18 local time, a magnitude (M) 7.3 earthquake devastated a
large area in the western Kermanshah province in Iran, near the Iraq border. It was the deadliest
global Earthquake of 2017.
The Energy released by a M7.3 earthquake, at 29km depth in western Iran was equivalent to 89 Hiroshima
Atomic Bombs (89 x 15 Kiloton TNT).
Local news reported over 700 dead and 9,000 injured in many villages and small towns of the province.
Luckily, the mountainous area is not densely populated otherwise the extent of the disaster
would have been much larger.
Tehran awakes with an earthquake fright on December 20, 2017, too.
Just before 11:30 p.m. local time, a M4.9 earthquake struck the west-end of the city of Tehran with a
population of 8.3 million in Tehran proper, and 14 million including the surrounding communities
(Fig. 1)
The epicenter of the 2017 Tehran Earthquake was in the Malard region just east of a M5.7 earthquake
in 1876, and northeast of Qazvin which experienced a M7 earthquake in 1962. Such a storied past
indicates that the Tehran region is within an earthquake hazard zone and that another major earthquake
is overdue. There are history of five damaging earthquakes in old city of Rey to the south, in
addition to statistically significant recorded events since early 20th century in Tehran region. Therefore,
probabilistic estimates of M7 earthquakes suggest a return period of 170-200 years. Nonetheless,
based on deterministic evaluation of active faults in the region such occurrence is inevitable,
and needs to be incorporated in design of the built environment.
The over-due event in Tehran region could kill in hundreds of thousands, and could cause over a
million-population displacement. Some of the main reasons for such calamity are; extensive vulnerability
to old and weak buildings, relative complacency with enforcing building codes and soft soilstructure
interaction at the southern part of the city, limited open spaces for rescue and recovery,
and lack of preparedness drills at schools, offices and homes.
Why and Where Earthquakes Happen
The Iranian plateau has been hit by disastrous earthquakes due to movements of fault zones associated
with mountain building processes that created the beautiful Alborz to the north, Zagros
to the west, and eastern Iranian ranges (Fig. 1). Indeed, the spectacular Damavand peak, Sahand
and Sabalan volcanos, the enchanting natural beauties and unique landscapes across Iran with its
rich resources of oil and variety of mines are all due to the same natural process. The compressive
force that is lifting and crashing the Iranian plateau is due to the opening of the Red Sea pushing the
Arabian rigid plate toward the Eurasian plate to the northeast.
The written history of earthquakes in Iran goes back to the year 856AD where extensive casualties
in Semnan were reported [Berberian, et al, 2014]. Other notable events were in 893AD in Ardebil
region, and 4 big earthquakes around Tabriz and other cities of East Azerbaijan in 1047, 1667, 1721,
1727 that have collectively caused around 400,000 civilian casualties. Other parts of Iran particularly
Khorasan, Fars, Lorestan, and west Azerbaijan also experienced devastating events that have
brought the death toll until the 1960s to about 750,000.
The first earthquake resilient building code was introduced after a magnitude 7, earthquake in Qazvin,
1962, with 12,000 losses of lives. Since then, the codes have been revised and upgraded in 1988,
and 1999.
Unfortunately, building codes were not consistently applied and missed upgrading older buildings,
particularly in rural areas. Since then we have witnessed more than 100,000 deaths in various natural
hazards in the past 50 years such as 1968 Dashte Bayaz, Khorasan (15,000); 1978 Tabas, Khorasan
(25,000); 1990 Manjil,Gilan (40,000-50,000); 2003 Bam (26,000 - 43,000) plus 25 other smaller deadly
events.
Your Role in Loss Reduction
Dissemination of factual information to people in harm’s way is crucial to help create awareness
and responsibility, without panic, on how to save own lives and their loved ones. Limited
resources of public sectors, or negligence or misplaced priorities of various governments should
not encourage people complacency in protecting our communities. Fortunately, new media technologies
can help achieve the first step of changing the safety culture among citizens, in a timely
manner.
A non-profit Khanehban Organization, for example, provides a platform to exchange knowhow,
technology, and ideas for earthquake damage reduction in Farsi.
A web-site has been established under; www.khanehban.org , Facebook, and Twitter to provide
information in Farsi for local residents of Iran, for all contributors of the latest technical information,
and for those who like support the cause with implementation.
In addition to allocating considerable resources of concerned citizens and authorities for relief and
recovery of survivors after the event, there must also be an emphasis on mitigation efforts to reduce
the impacts of natural disasters before they strike.
The Iranian diaspora, in addition to helping rebuild damaged and collapsed structures whether directly
or financially, can also put time and resources to establish local technical schools to focus on
skill development for young students who could subsequently help other people retrofit or rebuild
their existing homes and buildings that are located in disaster prone areas. This task can be most
effectively delivered by local NGOs, By Corp of Engineers without boarders, or a trained corp of
volunteers.
Remedies for Loss Reduction
I would humbly suggest that a permanent executive committee, and an expanded technical subcommittee
to remain in regular contact and organize meetings to help plan for disaster prevention
and damage reduction before the next expected and inevitable large magnitude earthquake in Iran.
Meanwhile, the engagement of the Canadian Society of Iranian Engineers and Architects, Iranian
Association of Builders, and Consulting Engineers can perhaps assist with training, and a push for
enforcing building codes. These organizations may also help with demanding for retrofit of existing
weak structures using collective technical resources of Iranians diaspora and those inside the
country.
I am optimistic that, in addition to arts and cultural bonds, disaster reduction could be another
cause for unity, enhancing Iranian Diaspora connections to utilize their vast resources and a fraction
of their productivity to help educate communities in Iran to protect themselves against a variety
Past, Present, and Future of Engineering
By Afshin Khodabandeh, P.Eng.
Ancient History
The word engineer comes from the ancient Latin
word “ingenium” which means “quality of mental
power”. The word “Engineer” was invented
and first used during the early renaissance period
to describe those who made extraordinary,
mind blowing contraptions mainly to amuse European
monarchs and members of aristocratic
families.
This knowledge or craft was also used as leverage
against enemies of the Monarchy. During
war, engineers such as Leonardo Da Vinci
were supposed to make better catapults, more
effective winch systems for heavy lifting, and armoured
carts to penetrate into the heart of hostile
enemy forces.
In the Middle East, the word “mohandes” comes
from the Arabic word “hendeseh” which is a
transformation of the Persian word “andazeh”
meaning measurement, and during at least the
past two millennia was used to describe those
who understood geometry and basic arithmetic.
This description was rather close to the work of
architects. So it would be only fair if we assume
architecture as another parent of engineering.
In the ancient empires, namely Egypt, Rome,
Iran, and China, architects performed the jobs
we now associate with engineering. The first
documented architect was Imhotep who lived in
Egypt around 2600 BC.
At the end of the renaissance era, around the
eighteenth century, there were two distinct
branches of engineering: the “Genie Militaire”
that worked for the army, and the “Genie Civil”,
as they were called during the reign of Napoleon
Bonaparte dealt with the more general needs of
society.
Sometime around mid-nineteenth century Mechanical
engineering emerged from civil engineering
and in the first half of the twentieth
century Electrical and Chemical engineers were
recognized as independent engineering disciplines.
Modern Engineering
Nowadays some engineers work on machines
as tiny as a few microns that have components
of merely a few molecules thick. Others, meanwhile,
build habitats as big as football fields outside
the Earth’s atmosphere.
In the beginning, engineers used to rely mainly
on trial and error (experience) but engineering
gradually worked its way towards pure science
and mathematics. As a result, learning the practice
of engineering principals changed from apprenticeships
to university education.
Right now, there are more than a dozen recognized
major engineering disciplines that vary in
nature from pure physics (e.g. semiconductors)
to biology (e.g. biomechanical engineering) and
result in technology ranging from flying drones
to nanomachines, most of which did not exist
34 MOHANDES MAGAZINE
two decades ago.
Diversity of engineering disciplines has vastly
changed the structure of engineering faculties.
For example, I invite you to take a look at the
University of Tehran in Iran. The former faculty
of engineering which in my days (1970s) used
to have six disciplines now has metamorphosed
into the “college of engineering” which is a conglomerate
of several engineering schools: civil,
electrical & computer, mechanical, chemical,
mining, metallurgy & materials, and industrial
engineering.
Every engineering school has a number of specialized
disciplines. For example, the school of
civil engineering has nine specialized fields like
structural, earthquake, environmental, and water
engineering just to name a few. The number
of engineering schools and their disciplines are
still growing.
Extrapolating current tendencies in engineering
education and practice, we might develop a
general idea and speculate about the future, but
how far can our imagination extend?
Future of Engineering
Even my wildest dreams can’t predict the status
of engineering one hundred years into the future.
I prefer to tighten the leash on my imagination
stallion and settle to speculate only the next
few decades.
Let us define modern engineering as “a tool to
provide needs” or “a problem solver”. Assuming
human population to reach a maximum of
10 billion before stabilization and beginning to
reduce in size, and considering “sustainability”
as the golden rule to govern human societies,
we might be able to define trends in engineering
and consequently predict the future to some
extent.
One important tendency in engineering that
has already begun and will probably continue
its reign in the future is to rely more on Fuzzy
Logic as opposed to the traditional deterministic
cause and effect logic. Another definitive trend
that will survive for a long time is the usage of
cloud storage facilities as a tool to drastically improve
our data storage capabilities. Vast usage
of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will also play an
important role in the future of engineering.
When it comes to the issue of sustainability, sociological
and humanitarian trends also begin
to impose their influence. Whenever the needs
and concerns of society as the main client of engineering
services changes, engineers have no
other choice but to adapt.
Nowadays, the Gross National Happiness
(GNH) is pushing to replace Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) and the Social Development Index
(SDI) that deals with fundamental human
values like racial equality and gender equality is
gaining momentum.
Education of engineering
Right now, average half-life of scientific knowledge
is about five years. In other words, everything
learned during years of university education,
will most likely become only 25 percent
accurate after ten years.
James Plummer, former dean of College of Engineering
at Stanford University, says: “It doesn’t
matter what we teach to our students because
by the time they graduate those teachings will
become obsolete”. As a matter of fact we have
to (and certainly will) change the teaching paradigm
in engineering schools from teaching
“how to do things” to teach them how to continue
learning to work with new concepts and
new inventions and innovations.
Continuation of education will no longer be optional
and every engineer shall always allocate a
certain percentage of her/his time to learning. In
this new paradigm, books will become less relevant
and research papers will deliver most of
the new scientific/professional discoveries. Students
of engineering will be encouraged to do
small scale derivative research projects instead
of conventional homework.
Blockchain
Distributed Ledger Technology
Distributed Ledger
