Long-term Phillipstown resident and advocate Wayne Hawker said the community would see the appeal through. “It’s not over yet. It may be a long, drawn out process but we’ll be fighting this to the very end,” he said. More than 100 objections were submitted to the Linwood- Central-Heathcote Community Board when the application was received, including from Linwood College and the police. Uncle Harry’s cross finds a home Two more World War 1 crosses which celebrated Armistice Day at the Sumner Redcliffs RSA have been claimed. Jess Gibson reports WORLD WAR 1 memorials honour him as Lieutenant Harry Marshall Wright. To his family more than 100 years on, he remains Uncle Harry. Lieutenant Wright enlisted as a volunteer in 1912 and climbed the ranks before the war broke out in 1914. He was living in Sumner when he left for Gallipoli to fight in the battle of Chunuk Bair. The last memory his family has of Lieutenant Wright was a piggyback ride given to his younger brother before he drove away for the last time. He embarked from Wellington on April 17, 1915, but was killed in action in Turkey several months later on August 7, aged 24. Lieutenant Wright’s name appears on a number of memorials around Christchurch. “He’s on the memorial at the community centre in Sumner. He went to Christchurch Boys’ High, so his name is on the memorial there, and because the family was living in Hororata at the time he was killed, he’s on the Hororata memorial also,” said Gareth. He said his trip to Gallipoli to visit the New Zealand memorial at Chunuk Bair, where his great uncle’s name was engraved, was “quite emotional.’’ Gareth said Lieutenant Wright’s ceremonial sword hangs on the wall at his father’s house. At his own home in Addington, his photo and some of his medals are displayed. Now one of 21 crosses held by the Sumner Redcliffs RSA, which were displayed in the Armistice Day commemorations to remember Sumner’s fallen soldiers, will be added to Gareth’s memorabilia. Gareth got in touch with RSA president Pat Boland after he saw an article in Bay Harbour News asking descendants to take their cross. Gareth said he is happy for the opportunity to collect the cross. “I’m very keen on my family Gareth Wright history,” he said. He plans to either keep the cross or give it to his father, who can hang it next to his brother’s sword. A significant part of the Wright family history is that, like Gareth now, Lieutenant Wright was part of the city council. Before he was enlisted, Lieutenant Wright was a clerk in the treasury department of the city council. His father Sidney Wright was a clerk at the Selwyn District Council. “It’s a small world,” said Gareth. Mrs Boland is meeting with the RSA committee this week to arrange a ceremony for the collection of the crosses. “We’re very delighted and honoured to be able to do that . . . we’re sure that the crosses will find a good home with their families,” said Mrs Boland. •To claim a cross, get in touch with Sumner Redcliffs RSA president Pat Boland on 027 333 2189. The best lifeguards from the programme will now be encouraged to take up afterschool surf lifesaving lessons to further their skills and one day maybe become senior lifeguards, he said.
