Mokena Board of Trustees
E-messaging possible key to keeping residents informed
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The Village of Mokena
is looking at adding a new
mass-notification system
that could expand the Village’s
ability to inform residents
of emergencies in the
community.
The discussion took place
Jan. 14 during the work
session following the first
Village of Mokena Board
of Trustees meeting of the
year.
“The reason this has come
to our attention is there may
be a need for a more comprehensive
alert notification
system that would include
text and voice messaging
to cellphones,” Assistant
Village Administrator Kirk
Zoellner said to the board
members during the discussion.
Zoellner said the Village
has used mass notifications
in the past, including
direct emails to residents,
reaching out through the
local media and by using
robocalls. After researching
more modern resources in
the marketplace, he said Everbridge
— a vendor whose
products include the Nixle
platform — was a popular
Round it up
A brief recap of other items discussed during the Jan.
14 Board of Trustees meeting
• As part of the consent agenda, the trustees voted
6-0 to approve an amendment to the liquor license
ordinance in order to add a Class D license for Frank’s
Shrimp & Chicken.
• During his comments, Village Administrator John
Tomasoski said Village Hall is available as a temporary
warming center for residents. He said those who need
to do so should call the police department’s nonemergency
phone number at (708) 479-3911.
choice used in a number of
communities.
Zoellner said there were
two approaches the Village
could take if interested: buying
directly from the vendor,
which would annually cost
$4,800 for the Nixle product
or $7,716 for the Mass
Notification Pro product; or
to get access to the product
by issuing a memorandum
of agreement with the Will
County Emergency Telephone
System Board.
The second option would
be cheaper for the Village,
as the Will County Emergency
Management Agency
would only charge $2,500
annually.
“The other thing that we
liked about going through
the Emergency Management
Agency is the advantage of
having local training and
support available here at
the local level, as opposed
to having to contact somebody
at headquarters at Everbridge,
which is out in San
Francisco,” Zoellner said.
He said staff also looked at
other comparable products,
but the cost of going through
those vendors also would
have exceeded $2,500.
“The thing we liked about
this … is the geographic areas
can be isolated, so that
you can get the message
strictly to the people that really
are in need of it,” Zoellner
said of Everbridge’s
products. “So, in case you
have a water main break,
you can isolate it to that part
of the community. Or, if
you have a situation where
you’ve got focused criminal
activity and you want
to make sure those people
are aware of what is going
on, again geographically
you can isolate that and get
that [message to] where you
want [it] to go.”
Zoellner did note that in
order for people to be included
on the notifications,
they would have to sign up
and select the ways in which
they wanted the Village to
send these types of notifications.
“So, if the board did decide
to go with something
like this, we would be aggressively
campaigning to
ensure people were aware
of this being available,” he
said, adding that staff would
do so using media and use of
the Village’s website.
Tom Murray, of Will
County EMA, was on-hand
to answer some of the board
members’ questions. Murray
confirmed the information
provided by residents
to enroll in the notification
service will not be sold.
All of the trustees voiced
their support for moving forward.
Overall wellness highlights 22CM annual Healthy Living Expo
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
A new year often produces
a renewed dedication to
health and wellness, but it
can be hard to know whereto
start.
What type of exercise is
best for reaching individual
goals? What are the pros
and cons to different diets?
How does one incorporate
preventative medicine into a
wellness regimen?
Answers to these questions
and more were found at
22nd Century Media’s annual
Healthy Living Expo, held
Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Tinley
Park Convention Center.
Along with having the
opportunity to chat with 68
health and wellness vendors
— up almost 20 from 2018
— expo-goers also enjoyed
speaker sessions, cooking
demos and workout sessions.
Heather Warthen, chief
events officer for 22nd Century
the expo offered wellness
tips and techniques for anyone
and everyone.
“We bring in a variety of
vendors, from travel and
insurance to mental wellness,”
she said. “We’ve got
yoga places. We’ve got fitness
places. There’s definitely
something here for
everybody. It’s painting a
different picture for people
on what health and wellness
looks like for all aspects of
life.”
VitaLife, of New Lenox,
was on hand highlighting
how a healthy body and
explained health coach Esther
November near-miss sparks
investigation and policy reform
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
When The Mokena Messenger
reported on the
near-miss collision that
Mokena Police Officer Peter
Stanglewicz captured
on dash cam footage on
Nov. 9, Metra did not release
the entire story of the
events that transpired that
day.
A recent investigation
into the incident, prompted
by the police dash cam
footage that went viral, has
revealed that four trains
had gate activation malfunctions
when crossing at
191st Street on the morning
of Nov. 9.
The footage taken from
the cabs of several trains
show that the crossing gates
did not activate for train
No. 412 before crossing
the intersection at 49 mph
at 7:25 a.m. The gates then
lowered and raised twice as
train No. 416 went through
the intersection at about 40
mph at about 8 a.m.
The gates were activated
correctly for train No. 414,
which went through the
intersection at about 7:42
a.m. after 412 and before
416. Video footage from
train No. 414 had already
been overridden by the
time Metra searched for the
footage, according to Metra
Spokesperson Michael Gillis.
The investigation — reported
at the Jan. 16 Metra
Board of Directors meeting
— revealed that six
trains passed through the
intersection without incident
before the four that
encountered problems.
According to a press release
issued by Metra on
Jan. 16, the engineer on
train No. 412 encountered
a signal along the track
requiring him to make an
unusual stop just before the
Mokena Front Street Station.
The engineer contacted
the Metra train dispatcher
and received permission
to go past the stop track
signal and proceeded at a
speed allowed by the signal
in his cab. The engineer
followed the protocol in
place at the time but failed
to report that the crossing
arms were malfunctioning.
“The signal was telling
him to operate at normal
speed,” Gillis said. “We
have since taken steps to
improve safety by changing
to rules to travel at
slower speeds.”
In the dash cam footage
captured by the Mokena
police vehicle, crews
can be seen working near
the tracks as train No. 506
whizzes by. When The
Messenger first took a look
at the November incident
back in December, Metra
spokesperson Sylvia
Cooper said that the crew
seen in the video was on
the scene at the time attempting
to repair safety
equipment that control the
crossing gates. Now it has
been revealed that those
were signal maintainers
who were dispatched to locate
the issue with the track
signal error prompting the
trains to stop near Front
Street.
The Metra release reported
that while the crew
member was working, inbound
trains Nos. 414, 416
and 506 encountered the
same track signal error requiring
an unusual stop and
followed the same procedure.
The police dash cam
footage caught train No.
506 as it went through the
crossing at 52 mph. The
footage from both the train
and the dash cam show that
the crossing gates failed to
activate before that train
reached the intersection.
Gillis said that of the 566
grade crossings in the Metra
system, the 191st Street
crossing is unique in that
there are two sets of signals
and circuits in that stretch
of the track, one alongside
the track and the other is
in the control room of the
train.
“As required, the engineer
of train 506 stopped
the train and reported the
gate activation failure to
the Metra train dispatcher,”
the press release stated.
“The dispatcher then reported
the gate activation
failure to the signal maintainer,
who was aware of it
because he was already at
the scene trying to diagnose
the track signal issue.”
According to Metra’s
investigation, the cause of
both the track signal issue
and the gate activation
failure was an intermittent
short in the electrical
circuit that controlled the
track signal and gates.
Gillis said that the systems
were repaired by that
afternoon. The gates and
track circuits went through
“exhaustive testing,” Metra
reported.
The results of this investigation
prompted permanent
operating protocol
changes within Metra that
have been in effect since
Dec. 6. While this is the
only Metra line that utilizes
the track, the freight lines
that share the tracks will be
subject to the subsequent
rule changes, as well.
“In situations where engineers
are given permission
by dispatchers to pass
a ‘stop’ track signal they
must now proceed at restricted
speed, 20 mph or
less, until the train reaches
the next track signal that
indicates the train can proceed
at the maximum authorized
speed, no matter
what cab signal they receive,”
the Metra press release
read. “This reduction
in speed will decrease the
stopping distance required
for a train in the event of
a grade crossing protection
failure or other emergency.”
Additionally, Metra said
it has reinforced its reporting
policies for a gate
activation failure, and is
currently cooperating with
a Federal Railroad Administration
investigation.
Mokena Police Department
has been “in constant
communication regarding
the reported issues” according
to Police Chief
Steve Vaccaro.
“Rest assured that if there
is an incident reported to us
we will dispatch an officer
to investigate as we contact
Metra and Metra Police,”
Vaccaro said.
Metra crossing again scene
of incident, gate obliterated
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
For the second time since
November, a Metra crossing
at 191st Street in Mokena
drew a police response.
A semitruck reportedly
went through the Metra
crossing on Jan. 14, which
resulted in approximately
$1,700 in damage to the
gate arm and an oncoming
train, according to a Metra
spokesperson.
The incident occurred at
7:03 a.m. as a truck traveling
westbound crossed the
tracks at 191st Street. The
gate arm was knocked off
the pole and was left hanging
over the tracks before
being hit by Metra Rock Island
No. 410 train inbound
to Chicago.
Mokena resident Jesse
Sinadinos was stopped on
the opposite side of the
tracks when the incident
occurred. After witnessing
the incident he reported it
immediately to the police.
He recalled the truck being
stopped at the intersection’s
crossing. The truck then
proceeded when the gates
briefly went up; however,
the gates were activated to
go back down because of
another southbound train
passing through the intersection.
“The gates went up halfway
and started coming
down again for another
train. It looked like the arm
hit midway down the trailer,”
Sinadinos said.
The Messenger has been
able to identify the driver
of the truck as New Lenox
resident Dennis Johns,
owner of Johns and Sons
Inc.
Johns recalled that when
the crossing arm came back
down he was panicked in
from Jan. 15
fear of there being another
train close enough to hit
him.
“The train went by and
the lights went off [on the
crossing arm] so I proceeded,”
Johns said. “I
got about halfway through
when they came back down
on my trailer... I hurried to
get the hell out of the crossing
because I knew what
it could do to my trailer. I
didn’t want anyone to get
hurt.”
The debris damaged
the cable beneath the train
that supplies power for the
lights, doors and heat to the
passenger cars. This caused
delays of 57 minutes along
the Rock Island Metra line
as the gate arm and damage
to the train was addressed
on the scene.
The incident was reported
to Mokena police, who
later handed over to Metra
police.
Metra officials reviewed
footage from the train,
but its spokesperson said
it is still unclear whether
the gate came down as the
truck was crossing, or if the
truck struck the gate when
it was down; however,
Metra spokesperson Meg
Thomas-Reile wrote in a
subsequent email to The
Messenger that “the lights
at the crossing can be seen
and then you see a truck
going through the crossing.
The train arrives at the
crossing and the gate arm is
down, clearly damaged and
lying on the track. It was
then struck by the train.”
The Messenger has requested
that video footage
but, as of press time, is still
waiting on Metra officials
to review our Freedom of
Information Act Request
for it.

Mokena D159 Board of Education
Bus driver’s, student’s fast action helps save life
Proposed
referendum to be put
to residents April 2
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
At the regular D159 Board
of Education meeting Jan.
16, the board recognized a
local hero.
Transportation Director
Rachel Aguirre started the
meeting off by recognizing
bus driver Jim Leitli and
Mokena Elementary School
student Abigail Rolnicki,
who both helped save the
life of Mokena Elementary
student Emma Novak.
“Back in December a student
had alerted Jim that another
student was in need,”
Aguirre said. “He pulled
over the bus and aided the
student by preforming the
Heimlich maneuver. He
calmed the student, reassured
the other students and
called the school to notify
them what had transpired.”
Aguirre presented a certificate
to Leitli and Rolnicki
for their quick thinking efforts.
New HVAC needed at MIS
The board decided that
a request for proposal special
board meeting would
find bids to replace a nonworking
rooftop HVAC unit
at Mokena Intermediate
School. This is one of the
long overdue repairs needed
within the district, but it has
taken priority.
“Timing is of the essence
if we want to get this work
What’s on the ballot
The language that is slated to appear on the April 2 ballot
Residents in Mokena School District 159 will be asked
to choose “yes” or “no” on the April 2 election ballot to
the following question:
“Shall the limiting rate under the Property Tax
Extension Limitation Law for Mokena School District
Number 159, Will County, Illinois be increased by an
additional amount equal to .30% above the limiting
rate for school purposes for levy year 2017 and be
equal to 2.7967% of the assessed value of the taxable
property therin for levy year 2019?”
done over spring break,”
Superintendent Don White
said. “They can get the materials,
but it’s really more of
scheduling the workers and
the crane while students are
not in the building. There
will be ongoing work, but
the crane work will be done
over spring break.”
White said that after the
RFP and bids are examined
the board can move forward
with the work.
“One of [the rooftop
units] is completely done,”
White said after the meeting.
“It will be replaced during
spring break, but all of the
controls for it will be done
after school or weekends.
We’re trying to make sure
we get it done before the
cooling system is needed in
the spring. It’s not operational
at all right now.”
A special meeting was
scheduled to be held on
Tuesday Jan. 22.
Board OKs referendum
language
White gave an update
of the referendum during
the meeting, saying that he
filed the documents and has
received notice from the
clerk’s office that it is set.
“It’s all ready to go,”
White said. “It’s now in the
hands of the community to
determine whether they are
going to say, ‘yes,’ or, ‘no,’
to it.”
The proposed referendum
would allow a .3 percent
tax to remain as part of
the overall tax levy. The tax
was implemented by voters
to help finance the construction
of Mokena Junior
High and is set to expire in
2020.
The board unanimously
approved placing the referendum
on the April 2 ballot
at a special meeting on Jan.
14.
Board members determined
that this was the best
option for generating the
necessary funds to maintain
the district’s three schools.
The tax generates approximately
$1.8 million in additional
revenue per year.
Lincoln-Way D210 Board of Education
Long-vacant property in TP up for bid again
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
At the Lincoln-Way Community
High School District
210 Board of Education
meeting on Jan. 16, few
items were voted on, but
there was a plethora of discussion
regarding informational
items on finances and
the debt schedule.
One item voted on at the
end of the night after closed
session was an unanimous
approval of a minimum bid
price of $3.5 million for the
property at 7551 W. 191st St.
in Tinley Park. This minimum
bid price is $1 million
lower than the proposed
minimum bid back in 2017,
which was set at $4.5 million.
The vacant property, just
shy of 72 acres, is located in
unincorporated Will County.
The district acquired the
land in 1996 for $2.9 million
with the original intention
to build Lincoln-Way
North High School, but later
decided to build it at Harlem
Avenue.
The bid document reads
that the sale will be conducted
by taking sealed bids,
which will be accepted until
3 p.m. March 19 at the district
administrative offices.
The Board of Education will
decide which bid, if any,
it will accept at its regular
meeting at 7 p.m. March 21
at Lincoln-Way Central.
Lincoln-Way has had
trouble selling this lot in
the past. Most recently, the
Wisconsin-based retail grocer
Woodman’s Market had
a purchase agreement with
Lincoln-Way in June 2017 to
acquire the lot for $4.6 million;
however, that deal fell
through in May 2018.
Lincoln-Way and Tinley
Park worked on a deal in
2013 with Walmart, but that
failed when Summit Hill
School District 161 rejected
a plan to give Walmart millions
in tax breaks. As far
back as 2006, W.M. Realty
of Tinley Park offered $11.2
million for the lot to build
a 370,000 square foot retail
shopping center; however,
that failed to pass after there
were objections from nearby
residents due to the close
proximity of the development
to neighboring homes.
“The Lincoln-Way School
Board has continued to be
motivated to sell the property
from the time it was
decided a school would not
be built on that site,” D210
spokeswoman Jennifer Hannon
said.
Keeping the finances on
track
Assistant Superintendent
of Business Bradley Cauffman
spoke about changing
the timing of bond payments
in an effort to save money.
He said that in the past the
district let all the funds collect
up through the month
and then make the first payment
of the month for payroll.
Round it Up
A brief recap of other items discussed at the Jan. 16
D210 Board of Education meeting
• Lincoln-Way West student and member of the
Lincoln-Way Marching Band Kylee Rinke presented
a Rose Parade stained glass project to the board,
which will be displayed within the district. Rinke spent
about 75 hours in her family’s studio creating four
customized Tournament of Roses stained glass pieces.
• The district had 54 blended learning classes that
implemented classroom laptop carts, up from last
school year’s 22 carts, as a way to develop a long term
vision for 1:1.
• Board members approved the elementary
transportation contracts on a staggered renewal basis.
• The Board approved the Wermer, Rogers, Doran &
Ruzon, LLC audit engagement letter, which states that
the district requests written communication before the
company does any work that exceeds what the district
has been billed.
• Tinley Park resident and D210 parent Scott
Scobodnik spoke during the public comment session
on the 5 a.m. sports practices, urging the board to
allow athletes to use Lincoln-Way North. “There are
students from outside the district who get to use the
facilities but our own students, whose parents pay tax
money to support the facility, aren’t allowed to use the
facilities?” he asked the board.

Fit4Mom franchise owners
Mandy Dunne, Michelle
empowered expo-goers
to make fitness a family
Emmerick said. “The instructors
Another fun fitness opportunity
found at the 2019
Healthy Living Expo was
with Tinley Park’s Heart
Smaniotto, operations manager,
explained how dance
benefits the body, mind and
spirit.
“Dance is great not only
physically, but mentally, as
well,” she said. “A lot of
our older clients will come
in and tell us it helps their
memory. From there, physically,
you don’t really realized
that you’re exercising.
So we have people who
Those looking for an athletic
Winter weather may have
deterred some people from
venturing out, but those who
Greenridge Farm, the last
of which is a small, familyowned
company based out
of Elk Grove.
Greenridge Farm Sales
Director Bobby Ruhaak explained
how the company
went back to basics to offer
its customers a natural line
of deli goods.
“We take pride in our
products,” Ruhaak said .
“We do everything all naturally,
so we use whole muscle
meat, tumble it in natural
spices, and roast it or smoke
it. Everything is done the
way it used to be done before
all the chemicals were
introduced, and we don’t
add any nitrates, nitrites or
binders.”
As many people look to
the new year as a time to
strive for new goals, so does
the fitness industry. Danni
Allen — Planet Fitness director
of health, wellness
and member engagement in
Cook County — said there
is a lot more in store in the
coming months.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Gym teacher’s idea for game gets
published in international magazine
Richard Schereck has been a local
physical education teacher for
10 years, but he has always wanted
to do more than just that.
And, after almost two years of
development, the Tinley Park native
can finally say he has contributed
to his field in a way he has
always hoped.
As of the last week of December,
a game he created, called
BalanceBuster has been published
for sale through Gopher,
which is a physical education,
athletics, and fitness equipment
company that develops and sells
games and other tools for teachers
and coaches.
“It was awesome to see something
that went from my mind onto
the page of a catalog in a magazine
that’s shipped all over the world,”
he said.
Schereck has been a teacher in
Summit Hill School District 161
for his entire career.
In early 2017, Schereck came
up with an idea for a game that
involves balancing, team building
and spacial awareness. While developing,
Schereck said his main
criteria for the game was safety
and being able to get every student
involved.
“Unfortunately, in physical
education, with space limitations
and the class sizes, a lot of times
teachers settle with just dividing
the group of students in half
and then having them throw at
something,” Schereck said, “So
I wanted to create something that
is different than just dividing and
throwing.”
Seventh-grader wins Homer Jr.
High Geography Bee
The National Geographic Bee
has been occurring for more than
30 years around the United States,
and for the past 10 years Homer Jr.
High School has been a participant.
This year’s local bee was held
on Jan. 16 at the school’s library,
where parents and teachers were
able to watch. The champion this
year was seventh-grader Jameson
Clark, who also won the bee when
he was in fifth grade. Clark said he
felt “pretty good” about winning.
To qualify for the geography
bee, 914 seventh- and eighthgrade
students at Homer Jr. High
answered a preliminary round of
seven questions. During the preliminary
round, 85 students answered
6-7 questions correctly
and moved onto a tie-breaker
round to qualify for the top 10
spots.
One of the top 10 students at this
year’s bee was runner-up Declan
Kelly. Kelly was last year’s champion
at Homer. Kelly said Clark
was good competition to have, and
he performed well.
Before the bee, students are offered
resources, including books
and websites from teachers, and
there also is a GeoBee Challenge
app that students can use to answer
sample questions.
“I didn’t really prepare,” Clark
said. “I just looked at a few questions
on the GeoBee app, but that
was about it.”
Kelly also said he did not prepare
much for the bee, because geography
comes easy to him.
“I just think it’s really interesting
to learn about other cultures and
other places, [and] see all of the
natural beauty of it,” Kelly said.
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Community fundraiser helps
Frankfort VFW post pay bills
From Taco Tuesdays to Friday
Fish Fries and every day in between,
Frankfort VFW Post 1493
is known throughout the southwest
suburbs as a gathering place
for veterans and the community to
enjoy good food, good times and
great company.
More importantly, the post, located
at 22057 Pfeiffer Road, provides
veterans with a community
bonded through the shared experience
of serving in foreign wars, as
well as countless resources to assist
with their needs.
On Jan. 16, Frankfort VFW leaders
hosted a fundraiser at CD&ME
to help the organization work toward
financial security and continue
supporting local veterans for
years to come.
Every dollar raised during the
fundraiser, from event tickets to
pizza sales, will assist the organization
in paying its mortgage and
other bills. A successful GoFund-
Me campaign allowed the post to
pay overdue bills, which Cmdr.
Stan Tylinski discovered when he
first took over the organization, and
the group is now seeking support
for ongoing expenses that include
monthly mortgage bills, taxes, insurance
and licenses.
The fundraiser was met with an
outpouring of community support,
and many groups and individuals
— among them Frankfort Mayor
Jim Holland and his wife, Stacy,
Budweiser, CD&ME and Dancing
Marlin — sponsored the festivities.
Community groups such as the Kiwanis
Club, Frankfort Lions Club
and other VFW chapters; elected
officials; local business leaders;
members of the public; and veterans
themselves packed the venue,
eager to help in any way they
could.
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Local jiujitsu specialist’s school
thriving in new location
Steven Patterson knew that once
he graduated college, he wanted to
do jiujitsu for the rest of his life.
But the question was how to
make a living off of it.
The local competed professionally
and has a pro record of 3-2 in
mixed martial arts, but those who
are not in the top 1 percent struggle
to make a living, he said.
So, in 2011, Patterson opened
University of Ground Fighting on
Route 30. And the success of it allowed
him to relocate to a building
double its previous size just off of
Schoolhouse Road in New Lenox
roughly four months ago.
Unlike some gyms, in which a
student is locked into contracts,
Patterson prefers a more laid-back
approach. It is a school, not a business,
in his mind.
Everyone gets one free week,
with no obligations. Meaning, if
someone does not like it in the first
week, he or she is not required to
go back.
Patterson does this so the students
can get the most out of their
lessons. It also makes him work
harder, because it is up to him to be
able to get people to come back in,
rather than a contract forcing them
through the doors, he said.
Patterson’s credentials speak for
themselves. He is a 14-time Chicago
Open champion and much
more.
Randori Jiu Jitsu owner gives back
to vets, law enforcement
Leo Valdes has owned Randori
Jiu Jitsu for eight years, but it was
not until August of this past year
that he decided to open a gym in
Homer Glen.
After being open for less than
six months, Valdes decided to run
a promotion to give back to local
community members. For all of
January, local law enforcement,
firefighters, paramedics, active
military members and veterans
have been able to receive a free
month of training.
“It includes unlimited training,”
Valdes explained, who said everything
is based on an honor system.
“They can come in seven days a
week, mornings, afternoons, evenings,
train as much as they want
to, and all of the martial arts that
I offer, which is judo, jiujitsu and
muay Thai boxing.”
Valdes said many childhood
friends that did judo with him
went on to go into the military, and
some were killed in action overseas.
This month is the eight-year
anniversary of the death of one of
his best friends, which is also why
he decided to offer the program in
January.
“And I had friends in law enforcement,
also, and I know the
sacrifice and everything they put in
and give,” Valdes said. “I thought
maybe I can help a little bit here.
Maybe I can offer some help for
everybody that’s out there risking
their lives for us. Maybe I can give
them some extra ways to protect
their lives.”
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Residential fire on 84th Avenue
leaves homeowner in critical
condition
A residential fire in Orland Park
reportedly left the homeowner in
critical condition, as two other
members of his family also were
treated for smoke inhalation at the
scene.
Firefighters were called around
4:50 p.m. Jan. 15 to a two-story,
split-level home in the 14200
block of 84th Avenue, according to
a press release issued the same day
by Orland Fire Protection District
spokesperson Ray Hanania. They
arrived to find “heavy smoke,” he
wrote.
One resident, the family’s son,
was outside the home when firefighters
arrived and directed them
to his mother and father, both in
their 90s, still inside the home,
Hanania wrote. Firefighters reportedly
used a landline, entered
the home and rescued both people
from inside the building.
All three were treated for smoke
inhalation at the scene, but the father
was in critical condition and
transported to Advocate Christ
Medical Center in Oak Lawn for
continued treatment, according to
Hanania. According to Kate Eller,
director of public affairs and marketing
operations for the hospital,
the man was still in critical condition
as of Thursday, Jan. 17.
A full still alarm was called for
the fire, and Orland received assistance
from eight local fire departments
and districts. The Illinois
State Fire Marshal and Orland personnel
were still investigating the
cause of the fire as of Jan. 17.
We’re all in a hurry
these days. Whether
we’re trying
to make that 9 a.m. butt-inthe-chair
deadline for work,
rushing to get the kids to
school or hustling to get the
pizza home before the winter
freeze saps all the flavor out,
we’ve all got places to go.
Often because of all that
hustle and bustle we’re less
inclined while driving to
pay attention to our surroundings.
Many of us have become
more aware of the inherent
D210
From Page 7
“By moving it up it allows
us to be tighter on cash
flow projections,” Cauffman
said. “By taking it the first
of the month I know I have
the funds needed to make the
payments needs and we are
able to borrow less.”
In discussion, Cauffman
also established seven
long-term debt objectives
based off the November
board meeting with PMA.
The board has established a
rough draft of the following
goals:
• Consider all options for
selling the Lincoln-Way
North building and apply the
sale proceeds to the current
debt before restructuring any
debt unless a sale does not
dangers of railroad crossings
because of the recent
incidents at the 191st Street
Metra crossing.
The recent internal
investigation released to the
public (check out that story
on Page 5) showed that failures
can happen at any time
and for a myriad of reasons
— some systematic, others
human caused.
Regardless of why these
failures happen, it’s absolutely
vital to remember that
we, as drivers on the roads,
have to take the responsibility
to slow down at train
crossings and pay attention.
Do not trust that safety gates,
lights, bells and whistles will
always work. They won’t.
Yes, slowing down at
train crossings will add precious
seconds to our commute,
but isn’t it worth it
when lives are on the line?!
So, please be patient,
Mokena. Please use caution
at any train crossing anywhere.
Please be safe.
occur prior to a significant
debt milestone.
• Avoid refinancing until
the district’s credit rating
is at least investment grade
Baa3.
• Do not issue additional
zero-coupon or capital appreciation
bonds.
• Ensure refinancing does
not extend the debt structure
by more than three years beyond
the current schedule,
which is levy year 2034.
• Focus on the total debt
service dollar levy and not
the debt service tax rates.
• Perform debt restructuring
in a tax-exempt manner,
and restructure debt with a
review and analysis of how
it impacts the long-term debt
objectives.
Board President Joseph
Kirkeeng said that the goals
would stand as a guideline.
Cauffman also established
a debt restructuring calendar
through 2020, which will
help guide the board to stay
on track with restructuring
its debt. The objectives and
debt restructuring calendar
will be finalized by Feb. 21
for the board to agree on.
Discussions were also
held regarding the district
trying to improve its Moody
Rating, which only recently
was moved up out of the financial
watch list and into
the early watch list.
“I can’t say how much
better the district’s financials
are,” Cauffman said when
comparing the district’s net
financial position to last
year’s. “We are working in
the right direction, we still
have a ways to go, but we
are headed in the right way.”
Letter to the Editor
Put shutdown blame where
it belongs
For the most part I agree
with your editorial about the
government shutdown. It is
a sad, frustrating situation;
however, I do take exception
for you saying it is both
parties fault. There was an
agreed upon, bipartisan bill
passed by the Senate, if you
recall. President Trump had
been on board for passage
and changed his mind after
his extremist right wing
goaded him publicly. What
President Trump does not
understand is that negotiation
is both sides giving up bits
of what they want in order
to keep our democracy going.
President Trump is not
interested in negotiation; he
is intent on dictating, strong
arming and doing character
assassination against anyone
who disagrees with him.
So lets be clear: One side is
willing to negotiate and Mr.
Trump is not capable of negotiation,
regardless of the consequences.
He wants to get
his way and gloat. This kind
of thinking was brought into
politics with the arrival of
the Tea Party and representatives
like Ted [Cruz]. We get
it our way or nothing. Both
parties do have their issues
and immigration did indeed
need be addressed, so putting
the issue in debate is correct.
But the president needs
to put away his overblown,
extreme ego and negotiate!
This shut down is 100 [percent]
the republican, egotistical
president and a rubberstamp,
spineless Republican
Party more interested in staying
in power than doing the
business of the government.
The true republicans have
resigned or not run for reelection
because they chose
to do that rather than fight
the extremists in their party.
By the way, I have been an
elected Republican committeeman
here in Will County
in the past, so there are things
that I see as productive on
both sides, but put the blame
for this current fiasco exactly
where it falls: the president
and the spineless leftover republican
senate.
Local organization helps teens battle depression
Mary Compton
Freelance Reporter
The life of a teenager has
never been easy. Today,
more and more teenagers
are battling depression and
becoming victims of suicide.
It was because of a suicide
of a classmate at Lincoln-
Way East High school that
Ryan Hesslau from Mokena
began foreverU, a youth
empowerment organization
that helps youth challenged
by life learn how to become
brave with the story they are
living.
“We live in a noisy and
chaotic world,” Hesslau
said. “There are so many issues
teens are dealing with
today. Anxiety is through
the roof. To see all these students
going through anxiety
from academics, parental expectations
and social media
— there is a lot of pressure
for them to become someone.
They are facing a constant
desire for acceptance,
and a fear of rejection is very
common in today’s world.”
One of the organization’s
participants — Annalise
Millirons, a Frankfort resident
and senior at Lincoln-
Way East — said foreverU
has changed her life.
“I was going through a
rough time with depression
and self- worth,” Millirons
said. “I was also struggling
with various issues and feeling
I always wasn’t good
enough. A friend of mine
told me about foreverU’s retreat.
I was able to come here
and talk to kids my age going
through the same things.”
The prevalence of social
media among today’s teens
can be both a blessing and
a curse; while popular platforms,
such as Facebook and
Twitter, allow teens to connect
with others and express
themselves in ways unimaginable
even 30 years ago, the
amount of online bullying
and harassment can lead to
devastating consequences.
“As teens we also put on
masks,” Millirons said. “A
lot of kids my age put on
masks instead of coming to
terms with their feelings.”
Between sessions at the
retreat, Millirons hugs her
stuffed animal and writes
in her journal. The self-help
workshops have been key in
her healing.
ForeverU camps and retreats,
which take place in
the winter, spring and fall,
are specifically designed
for high school students.
During the school year, the
retreats are capped at 25
students. The camps feature
speakers and classes focused
on tips that they can implement
investing in relationships,
applying in the classrooms,
self-care, meditation
and overall well being.
“With these self-help
workshops, foreverU teaches
the students how to live
better lives. In the process
they get the courage to live
their stories” Hesslau said.
“We also believe in the power
of smaller groups because
everything is stronger…
foreverU wants to see these
teens thrive and live a better
life.
“I’m constantly thinking
of how we can multiply our
impact. We would like to
have these retreats monthly
so more students can experience
these to reset their life.”
Small groups are a big
focus for participants. Millirons
took part in Reset
Weekend Dec. 14-16 at
Camp Manitoqua.
“In small groups we’re
able to work on ourselves,”
Millirons said. “There are
questions that Ryan comes
up with and we are able to
answer them with how it
affects us. If the session is
Ryan Hesslau (left), founder and president of foreverU, speaks with one of the organization’s participants at a Reset
Weekend held Dec. 14-16 at Camp Manitoqua in Frankfort. Mary Compton/22nd Century Media
about depression, I can go
in to my story and be able to
talk with three or four other
kids how I feel without being
overwhelmed. You don’t
have to say everything, just
what you need to. Because
it’s a smaller group the other
kids are so supportive.
“Small groups help me to
pull off my mask and actually
be able to talk to people,”
she added. “We all have different
issues, but we’re all
connected in one way. Being
able to come here and
express my feelings is an out
instead of self- harming. I
have the tools to use because
of foreverU.”
When one of Ashley’s
Yvanauskas friends passed
away, she contacted foreverU
to help her get through a
huge loss. The Mokena teen,
also a student at Lincoln-
Way East, has been involved
in foreverU for two years.
“What I like about this
organization is that they believe
that no student walks
alone,” Yvanauskas said. “I
wanted to get involved in
hearing my voice heard. My
friend’s death hurt a lot. I
didn’t expect someone my
age to pass away. I didn’t
expect something like this in
our community.”
During the summer, foreverU
hosts a week-long empowerment
camp where up
to 50 students can take part.
“I’ve been to the camps,”
Yvanauskas said. “Attending
makes me feel less alone and
learning to speak my mind.
I don’t feel judged and I’ve
learned how to have a sense
of empowerment. I feel
mental health is the biggest
issue facing teens today. Especially
boy teens who don’t
talk about it. People hide and
they don’t talk. They feel
they don’t have an outlet.
This program gives an outlet
to talk and gives kids a place
to do that. There are adults
that care here.”
On Feb. 2 foreverU is
scheduled to hold a fundraiser
from 6-10 p.m. at Tuscany
Falls in Mokena. Tickets for
adults are $70. Tickets for
high school and college students
are $40. Cocktail attire
is requested. There will be
silent auction items and entertainment
by Keith Semple
and The Band.
Tickets can be purchased
items. To make a donation
Woggly Square Brewing, Crafted 1979
raise money for children with autism
Megan Schuller
Assistant Editor
John Newton is a Tinley
park lawyer by day, owner
of Woggly Square Brewing
Company by night and he’s
making a difference in the
Lincoln-Way community
one brew at a time.
He recently donated
$1,000 to the Lincoln-Way
Special Education Joint
Agreement Foundation from
a sold out fundraiser on Dec.
1 at Crafted 1979 Bottle
Shop and Tap Room in Mokena.
“When we heard the donation
would be $1,000 we
were humbled by such generosity
and are looking forward
to being able to fulfill
grants that are requested
by LWASE [District] 843
staff,” LWASE Foundation
President Christine Bodzianowski
said. “Teachers,
support staff can fill out a
grant to request enrichment
materials for their students,
team building activities,
adaptable science curriculum,
as well as items to meet
the unique sensory needs of
our amazing students, just to
name a few.”
Newton was inspired to
dedicate the mission of his
brewing company to help
those with autism because
his youngest child — Matthew,
who is 13 — is on the
autism spectrum.
“I said that if we are going
to do this [start a brewing
company] it can’t be to just
have another brewery in the
community. I wanted to help
the autistic community,”
Newton said.
The namesake of the
brewery Woggly Square
comes from a phrase that
Matthew often said when he
was younger.
“I was thrilled to do the
fundraiser,” Newton said.
“I’m glad to help a local
charity, We hope to double
what we did last year and
hold bigger events in the future.”
He often donates beer
for the fund raisers, and the
funds raised go to local charities,
like LWASE, that help
people on the autism spectrum
and those with other
kinds of challenges.
Newton hopes to establish
a physical location for
Woggly Square, which currently
contract brews its
beer through other breweries
— such as 350 Brewing
Company in Tinley Park —
within the next two years.
Once Newton establishes his
own location, he said he intends
to create jobs for adults
with autism to help reinforce
life skills. He also wants to
invite organizations over like
LWASE, the Lincoln- Way
Special Recreation Association
and Little Friends to give
adults with autism the skill
sets and training to work in
the restaurant business.
“The Lincoln Way Area
Special Education Joint
Agreement Foundation is a
great cause. They serve to
raise funds, good and services
for the benefit of those
with special needs in all of
District 843,” Newton said.
Bodzianowski said that
The LWASE Foundation was
extremely excited and appreciative
of the funds made
possible by the joint effort of
the Woggly Square Brewing
Company and Crafted.
“We cannot thank Woggly
Square Brewing Company
and all of the people
that came out that night to
support LWASE Foundation
enough,” Bodzianowski
said.
The Dish
Ever-evolving menu keeps EggCetera Cafe fresh
Mokena breakfast, lunch
spot thrives on customer
service
Thomas Czaja, Contributing Editor
EggCetera Cafe opened its doors
to the Mokena community at its first
location downtown in 2003 before
adding its second spot in 2010.
Since then, the business has become
known for its breakfast and
lunch selections, offering fresh
ingredients in comforting meals
at two cozy spots where friends
and family can gather. To reward
its loyal nucleus of patrons, Egg-
Cetera introduced a rewards program
early last summer.
“It’s fantastic,” owner Dino Bastas,
a Mokena resident for nearly
22 years, said of the program,
which allows diners to rack up
points for every dollar spent to get
various discounts, deals and freebies.
“We have some customers
coming in here every day. Why not
reward them?”
Those interested can search Egg-
Cetera Cafe in the Apple App Store
or Google Play Store to download
an app to sign-up for the program,
or do so at the restaurant and receive
a rewards card.
But a bigger part of what makes
EggCetera a continued success
may be the customer service. Customers
who frequent the business
might find that their usual server or
servers come to know their order,
and a sense of familiarity established,
Bastas explained.
“These regular folks come in;
their order is already in there,”
Bastas said. “Sometimes, the cooks
will peek through and start something
[for regulars].”
Those who have been to Egg-
Cetera on numerous occasions
know it has a diverse menu that is
occasionally tweaked. A rotating
specials menu also is available.
For breakfast, one of the more
recent menu entries is the triple
berry stuffed French toast ($9.49),
which Bastas said has strawberry
cream cheese in the middle, with
blueberries, raspberries and strawberries
piled on top.
Regardless of the breakfast or
lunch selection, the owner looks to
make sure to use fresh ingredients,
while still making a quick product.
“It’s real vegetables, nothing out
of a can,” Bastas said. “That’s the
biggest thing. As much fresh vegetables
and fresh ingredients as
possible that have been processed
the least.
“That’s the key: trying to get
people a healthier option.”
For those looking for something
filling, the biscuits and sausage
gravy ($8.69) are a big hit for the
breakfast folks, with buttermilk
biscuits cut in half and smothered
in a thick, homemade pork sausage
gravy, topped with two eggs.
In addition to the triple egg skillets,
egg-ceptional omelettes, pancakes,
crepes, French toast, waffles
and scramblers, the business offers
a variety of melts, wraps, a homemade
soup of the day, 100 percent
certified Angus beef burgers, salads
and a sandwich grill for the
lunch crowd.
Under lunch, the chicken Philly
($9.49) — containing a grilled
chicken breast, topped with sauteed
onion, pepper and mushroom,
smothered with mozzarella cheese,
on French bread — is a big draw.
“A couple of my cooks play
around, and we talk,” Bastas said
The red velvet pancakes ($8.99 on their own) are a seasonal special available through Valentine’s Day that
are topped with a homemade cream cheese icing and can have raspberries and chocolate chips added for $2.
Photos by Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
“You can get food anywhere. There’s more eateries now than ever
before. What differentiates us from all other eateries is the staff,
the customer service. Good food tastes great with good service.”
Dino Bastas — EggCetera Cafe owner
of how they tweak the menu. “I’ll
look to put something new on, and
we’ll work together.”
Of course, the specials always
include some seasonal tweaks. The
current specials are slated to run
through Valentine’s Day, according
to Bastas. Those include the hearty
and heartfelt red velvet pancake
breakfast — $10.99 as part of a
meal that has two eggs, two strips
of bacon or sausage links, hash
browns and a short stack of Egg-
Cetera’s red velvet pancakes.
In the fall, pumpkin pancakes
continue as a special through the
holiday season. After Thanksgiving
and through the holidays, gingerbread
pancakes also find a place
among the special. After the red
velvets complete their run, carrot
cake pancakes grace the specials
through Easter.
“People just want something different,”
Bastas said.
Corporate catering also helps
the business, especially during the
winter months. And Bastas said approximately
95 percent of their catering
is to businesses in town and
other surrounding communities.
And with a resurgent economy and
businesses steadily popping up in
the area, Bastas expects that catering
part of EggCetera to grow.
“We are here to stay,” Bastas
said. “I tell people all the time: You
can get food anywhere. There’s
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Homes
In Manhattan and Peotone – From the mid-$200’s
New designs are a result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
Classified Ad!
Call
708.326.9170
Dominic Tobin is a junior
on the Lincoln-Way East
boys diving team
How’d you get started
in diving?
It was during gym freshman
year. I landed a oneand-a-half
pretty cleanly
with my hands, and the gym
leader said that if I joined the
dive team — since there’s
not many kids on it — I
would have a pretty good opportunity
of making it pretty
far and also getting a scholarship.
So I though that’d be
something fun to do because
I kind of enjoyed it.
What’s your favorite
memory of the sport so
far?
It has to be at any invitational
or meet where there
are kids you know. When
you land a clean dive you
can just hear the crowd go
crazy. The sport’s more built
on friendship than competition.
It’s just building your
peers up.
What’s your favorite TV
show?
One that I currently enjoy
and am still watching is “The
Office.” I like the humor. It’s
not something you’ll run in
to everyday. It’s something
different every episode. For
me, [my favorite character]
has to be Toby because everyone
just hates him, and
it’s just a bunch of comic
relief whenever he’s around.
Everyone just rips on him.
What would be the first
thing you’d buy if you
won the lottery?
I’d probably up my closet,
get some new pieces of
clothing in there.
What’s your favorite
dive to perform?
An inward one-and-a-half
pike. It’s challenging but
also rewarding when you
land one, when you fold
completely in half and enter
the water hands first. It’s
pretty thrilling.
If you could dive
anywhere in the world,
then where would it be
and why?
I’d probably go cliff diving
somewhere out in Brazil
or something because there
are so many exotic locations,
and it’s a whole different
world out there compared to
1-meter springboard diving.
Do you have any plans
for college yet?
I haven’ committed anywhere
yet, but I was thinking
if I didn’t get a scholarship
to anywhere it’d probably be
two years at a local school
to get the basic classes out
of the way, and then pursue
my desired major, [which is]
psychology.
If you could have dinner
with anyone living or
dead, then who would it
be and why?
Robert Daley. He’s a British
Olympic diver. He’s won
two gold medals. I’d like to
talk to him about what it’s
like to dive at the Olympic
level. They have to be so
Photo submitted
precise and accurate on every
little movement that they
do, and they always land almost
perfectly.
What’s one item you
own that you couldn’t
live without?
My cellphone because
that keeps me connected to
everyone.
What’s your advice for
younger divers who
want to compete at the
high school level?
It would be to not stress
about it. For my first couple
of meets I always stressed
about being perfect. But,
in reality, no one’s perfect.
You’re not going nail every
dive. You’ll get some low
scores here and there. It’s
all about bettering yourself
every time and going back
at it at the next meet harder
and harder... It’s more about
having fun than it is competitive.
At the same time, it
is rewarding when you place
high or break a record. But,
in reality, it’s all about having
fun and meeting new
people.
Bench scores 26 in highest scoring game of year for East
Sean Hastings
Freelance Reporter
Stagg kept with Lincoln-
Way East through the first
quarter, trailing just 20-15,
but an 8-0 run put together
by the Griffins to start the
second quarter quickly put
the game out of reach early.
Senior guard Julian Barr
did not score during the 8-0
run, but a nine-point first
quarter gave the rest of the
team added confidence and
helped lead to a 73-42 win
Friday, Jan. 18, at East.
“Our confidence grows
when Julian plays well,”
East head coach Rich Kolimas
said. “When he scores
early for us, it takes the pressure
off everyone else. When
he starts hitting baskets, it’s
pretty clear it’s going to
continue for a while. He’s a
streaky guy.”
Barr scored 19 points for
the Griffins to be the leading
scorer of the game, including
four three-pointers. Two
of which came on back-toback
possessions in the first
quarter when the Griffins
trailed 11-9.
Barr’s threes gave East
the lead for the first time
and they never trailed again.
Whether it was a pull-up
three-pointer or a falling layup,
Barr showed clear, raw
confidence.
“I think it just came from
practice this week,” he said.
“We shot the ball really well,
and my teammates were able
to get me open and get me
the ball, and I just knocked
it down.”
Ten of the 12 Griffins to
receive playing time scored
Friday for East. Junior guard
Ty Slager scored nine points
off the bench, all of which
were three-pointers. Junior
Ryan Sierocki was the second-leading
scorer with 11
points.
East scored 26 points off
Lincoln-Way East’s Jhei-R Jones goes for a layup against Stagg on Friday, Jan. 18. The
Griffins scored a season-high 73 points, including 26 points off the bench, in the win.
Julie McMann/22nd Century Media
the bench.
“Everybody was ready to
come off the bench and everybody
played their role
and fulfilled it,” Barr said.
“I think we did a good job of
that.”
And one thing that has
changed for East recently is
who is in the starting lineup.
But, it still did not really
matter as some of the players
off the bench played starter
minutes.
Having the depth East
does allowed Kolimas to
make changes and even keep
a bench player in for most of
the game, so being a starter
is not necessarily the most
important thing for a player.
“The fact that you run out
there as a starter and people
look at it as that’s the most
important, but sometimes
it’s about who’s on the floor
in crunch time, who’s on
the floor in the last couple
minutes of a quarter may be
more important than who
starts,” Kolimas said.
It is also sometimes about
a matchup reason for someone
to get a start over another
player.
East’s big night on offense
led to strong defense on the
other end, to where Stagg
rarely looked comfortable
moving the ball around.
The third quarter was indicative
on how well East
was able to play at both
ends of the floor. The quarter
started with Lemone Lampley
II stealing Stagg’s inbound
pass and ended with
the Griffins on a 12-2 run.
Lampley also hit a buzzer
beater three-pointer falling
down to end the first half 35-
23 to help keep all the momentum
on East’s side.
“I just loved our energy tonight,”
Kolimas said. “When
you score, it just lifts you a
bit more and you get more
intense. Honestly, coming
into this game, we were concerned
about Stagg’s level of
intensity. If there’s one thing
they do, is they play hard.”
He said the Griffin’s rallying
cry was to be the more
intense team and be able
to keep extending the lead,
which is something they
have not experienced much
of this year.
“[Lampley’s steal] is a
good sign that we’re ready
to go and that we’re not going
to have a let down in the
second half,” Kolimas said.
East’s defense held the
Chargers to 45 percent
shooting and 31 percent
from beyond the arc, while
the Griffins were above 50
percent in both categories.
Shooting the ball well
from the perimeter and defense
were two points of emphasis
before East started the
season.
They thought the threepointer
would be where they
would succeed from and the
defense would need some
work, but it was the opposite
early on in the season.
“It was great to see the
ball go through the hoop for
us,” Kolimas said. “As well
as the defensive intensity.”
“We’re feeling good,”
Barr said. “I feel like we’re
at our peak and it’s only up
from now.”

LW Central takes second at sectional, advances to state final
RANDY WHALEN, Freelance Reporter
They’re back.
After qualifying for state a year
ago, both the Lincoln-Way Central
and Lincoln-Way West boys bowling
teams are back this season.
In fact, West is there for the third
straight season.
That’s all because the teams
survived the Andrew Sectional on
Saturday, Jan. 19, at Orland Bowl,
and were among the Top 6 advancing
teams. The State Finals will be
held this Friday, Jan. 25, and Saturday,
Jan. 26, at St. Clair Bowl in
O’Fallon.
Minooka (6,630 pin-fall total)
won its fourth sectional title in
the past six years and advanced to
state for the seventh straight season.
Central (6,445) placed second,
just edging out West (6,439).
Behind individual champion, Matt
LaBonte (1,499) Richards (6,393)
was fourth, while Lockport (6,277)
placed fifth and Joliet West (6,262)
squeezed out the last spot when
Sandburg (7th, 6,244) faltered with
an 871 in the final game.
“We took fourth in the [South-
West Suburban] conference meet,
third at the [Minooka] regional,
and now second at the sectional,”
Central coach Coley O’Connell
said. “Yes, the kids are saying that
means first [next week at state].
But we just had a good morning
series [3,385] and kind of rode that
wave the rest of the day.”
No one rode it better than the
Knights’ Alex Nolan. The junior
veteran rolled a 300 in the fifth
game.
“Every ball I had was right
there,” Nolan said of the 300. “I
was very happy to do it at the sectional.
It’s really rewarding.”
Nolan finished with a 1,416 series,
which was good for seventh
place overall, including starting the
day with a 249.
“Going into the regional and beyond
we’ve just worked as a team,”
Nolan said. “It’s going to get better
and better. I just know we have to
focus at state. It’s a grind there with
six games on Friday and hopefully
six games on Saturday. You have to
Lincoln-Way Central junior bowler Alex Nolan leads his team to the State Final with a seventh overall individual finish, including a perfect 300 in the
fifth game, as the Knights took second place in the Andrew Sectional on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Orland Bowl. 22nd Century Media file photo
be sharp mentally and get spares.”
Nolan, who helped the Knights
take third in the state last season,
had to be mentally tough on his
300. Before the 10th frame, there
was an equipment malfunction on
the lane and he had to wait it out to
complete the perfecto.
“He’s only a junior, but he’s our
veteran,” O’Connell said. “We had
only two seniors today and they
weren’t in the starting lineup. But
they stayed upbeat. We used all our
guys and they all stepped up when
we needed them to.”
Junior Tommy Martini (1,335,
high of 275 in game No. 3) and
fellow junior Tyler Misch (1,263,
high of 236 in game No. 3), were
the only other Central bowlers in
all six games. Junior Austin Zaker
(944, high of 225 in game No. 2)
bowled the first five games, and
sophomore Jack McCabe (840,
high of 276 in game No. 1) rolled
the first four games. Brian Triezenberg
(462, including 246 in Game
No. 5) bowled two games and fellow
senior Ryan Gamen (185) had
one, while freshman Luke Thormeyer
wasn’t credited with bowling
a game for the Knights.
It was also a dream come true for
Lincoln-Way East senior Josh Edgin,
as he qualified as an individual
as well. His total of 1,356, which included
a high game of 256 in Game
No. 3, put him in 12th place overall.
“It’s definitely going to be an experience,”
Edgin said of going to
state. “I couldn’t have done any better
and I felt really good. Early in
the season I was struggling and fell
out of the starting lineup, but I got
back on track. Just knowing that I
may not have a spot motivated me.”
While Edgin is happy to go as
an individual, he and his Griffins
teammates wondered what could
have been if they had advanced out
of the regional the week before.
“I’m happy for them to go on,”
he said of Lincoln-Way West. “But
it still hurts that they only beat us
by three pins.”
East senior DJ Armbrecht
(1,298, high of 257 in game No.
3) and junior Demitri Przybylinski
(1,267, high of 241 in game No. 5)
also bowled in the sectional for the
Griffins.
“All three of our guys bowled
really well,” East coach Dan Galligan
said. “It was nice to see Josh
qualify for state. DJ just missed (by
52 pins) of qualifying as a senior,
too. Demitri will be back to help
lead us next year.”

Knights boosting confidence with win over Warriors
RANDY WHALEN
Freelance Reporter
It’s been a special season
for the Lincoln-Way Central
boys swimming team.
The Knights hope that
continues into next week and
beyond.
With the SouthWest Suburban
Conference meets
next weekend the Knights
hope to 3-peat as Red Division
champions. Then, two
weeks after that, they hope
to win a sectional for the first
time in school history.
In the meantime, they
tuned up for the postseason
push by traveling across
town on Thursday, Jan. 17,
for an SWSC dual meet
against Lincoln-Way West.
There Central came away
with a 116-64 victory to improve
to 6-1 on the season.
“We’re really excited,”
Central coach Luke Bell
said. “We’ve been working
hard and have some high expectations.
We won the conference
on both levels last
year and we were second in
the sectional [behind Lincoln-Way
East]. We qualified
guys [in five events] to
state last season.
“Danny O’Brien qualified
in two events, and Joe Bozzi
qualified in the 500-yard
freestyle and placed 16th in
the state. Now he’s in the Top
10 for times in the state in the
event, and he’s excited.”
Now a sophomore, Bozzi
is looking forward to literally
making a splash at this
season’s state swim meet.
“It’s fourth best right
now,” Bozzi said of his current
500-yard freestyle time
in the state. “I’m looking
forward to improving my
time. This season I’ve just
come to practice, put in extra
time and I’m working hard.
“A year and a half ago I
was a backstroker. One of
my club coaches put me in
The Knights’ Anthony Schletz swims the 200 freestyle.
the 500-free and I qualified
for state in the club season.
I just get in a zone, set the
pace and keep pushing in
that race. The team is shaping
up really well. We want
to take the sectional.”
Bozzi was part of four
winning teams in the dual
meet against West. He
won the 100-yard freestyle
(:48.65 seconds) and the
100-yard backstroke (:54.21
seconds). He also kicked off
the meet as part of the winning
200-yard medley relay
(1 minute 43.21 seconds),
which consisted of Bozzi,
Matt Senese, Tommy Kirk
and O’Brien. In the 400-yard
freestyle relay, it was Bozzi,
Senese, Kirk, and Will Jager
(3:30.54) finishing in first
place.
Also placing first was:
O’Brien (1:53.43) in the
200-yard freestyle; Jager
(:23.78) in the 50-yard freestyle;
Kirk (:55.23) in the
100-yard butterfly; and the
foursome of Senese, Nate
Fritz, Devin Mihaichuk, and
Jager (1:36.22) in the 200-
yard freestyle relay.
“Win conference and
sectional,” O’Brien bluntly
stated when asked what the
team’s goals were the rest of
the season. “We will have
to beat [Lincoln-Way East]
again to win the sectional,
[Central defeated the Griffins
89-88 in an SWSC
crossover on Thursday, Dec.
6 in New Lenox] but everyone
is stepping up.
“We’ve never won a sectional
in school history.
We’re trying to follow up
the girls and win a sectional
championship.”
The Knights’ girls swim
team won their first sectional
title in the fall.
O’Brien is one of only
three Knights seniors on
the varsity level. The others
are Kirk and Jack Benzing.
Central also won the diving
as Tommy Snider (160.50
score) finished first and
teammate Connor Brennan
(123.30) placed second.
Also placing second
for the Knights was Fritz
(2:10.72) in the 200-yard
individual medley, O’Brien
(:24.21) in the 50-yard freestyle,
Mihaichuk (:58.20) in
the 100-yard butterfly), Jager
(:52.37) in the 100-yard
freestyle, Anthony Schletz
(5:32.29) in the 500-yard
freestyle and Kirk (1:08.41)
A pair of sophomores won
the events in the dual meet
for West. They were Sean
Finley (2:04.07) in the 200-
yard individual medley and
(1:03.38) in the 100-yard
breaststroke. Also, Gavin
Boomsma (5:19.76) placed
first (5:19.76) in the 500-
yard freestyle.
Both Central and West
will be at the SWSC Red
meet. That is slated for 5
p.m. on Feb. 1 with the diving,
and starting at 10 a.m.
on Feb. 2 is the swimming
competition. Those both will
be held at Andrew.
The sectionals are scheduled
to be held on Feb. 16.
Both West and the Knights
will be in the Lincoln-Way
Central Sectional.

Scholarship offers
free rides to college
thanks to caddying,
academics
TIM YONKE, Freelance Reporter
Engineering and finance
seem like appropriate majors
for anybody caddying on a
golf course.
Three area students —
Kyle Dingle, Nate Ernst and
Justin Lundy — have helped
area golfers “engineer” their
way around the course because
of their skills on the
links. And, more importantly,
their skills have paid off
big time for college.
They are three of 20
Chicago-area high school
seniors who have been
awarded the Western Golf
Association’s Chick Evans
Scholarship — four full
years of paid housing and
tuition. It is estimated to be
valued at $120,000.
To earn this prestigious
scholarship it took more
than just carrying a bag full
of clubs around the course,
although it certainly helped.
Applicants were also judged
on academics, character and
financial need.
Applying for the Evans
scholarship “was a ton of
work. It took me two months
to go through the process,”
said Dingle, who along
with Ernst, his Lincoln-Way
East buddy, began caddying
Pictured are (left to right): Kyle Dingle, Lincoln-Way East; Nate Ernst, Lincoln-Way East;
and Justin Lundy, Lincoln-Way Central. All three students were awarded the Western Golf
Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship, which includes four full years of paid housing and
tuition. Photos submitted
five years ago at Prestwick
Country Club in Frankfort.
He is the son of Dave and
Maureen Dingle. His older
brother Jack is also an Evans
Scholar. A “straight A” student
with a 4.4 GPA, Kyle
will be majoring in finance
and is choosing between
University of Kansas, University
of Illinois and Indiana
University.
The scholarship process is
mostly done online, but an
essay, a face-to-face interview,
letters of recommendation
from a school counselor,
as well as someone from the
golf course, are required.
In terms of the interview,
“it was a nerve-wracking experience,”
said Ernst, the son
of Bill and Jeannine Ernst.
Nate has a twin brother, Ben,
as well as two younger siblings,
Isabella and Andrew,
who are also twins. He has
a 4.6 GPA and would like to
major in finance at either the
University of Illinois or Indiana
University.
Lundy attends Lincoln-
Way Central and caddied
at Olympia Fields Country
Club the last two summers.
He is the son of Nate and
Alison Lundy and has an
11-year-old sister, Maggie.
Academically, Justin has
a 5.0 weighted GPA, and
scored a 35 on the ACT and
1530 on the SAT. He plans
on majoring in engineering
at either Purdue University
or the University of Colorado.
Ironically, all three share
something else in common:
They don’t really play golf.
“I can tell you all about
the game but I can’t play it,”
Dingle joked. “I got started
when I tagged along with
my brother [Jack] who was
signing up to be a caddy at
Prestwick. They asked me
how old I was and I told
them I was 13. They asked if
I wanted to caddy, too. So, I
said, ‘Sure.’”
Ernst got started with caddying
because “I was just
trying to find a way to make
some money.” Just 13 at the
time, he said, “I was intimidated.
I was the youngest kid
there. I was also extremely
shy and knew very little
about golf. It was a whole
new sport for me.”
For Lundy it was slightly
different.
“I really liked golf when a
friend of mine [Brent Thomson]
convinced me to give
caddying a try,” said Lundy,
who plays the sport occasionally
for fun.
Caddying can be a physical
challenge.
“Starting out I was exhausted
after every loop. I
was out of shape,” Ernst admitted.
“It gets hot on the golf
course in the summer, especially
when they water
the fairways every couple
of hours,” Lundy said. “The
humidity gets bad.”
Sometimes caddies carry
two bags during a four-hour
round and quite often caddy
twice a day.
“I liked going to the club
every day,” Dingle said.
“Each loop you had to mentally
prepare yourself for it.
You have to understand the
person you’re caddying for
on a more personal level. It
was one of the most interesting
parts of the game.”
The job has its benefits,
too.
“I’ve learned a lot about
patience as well as being able
to work and deal with people
that are older,” Lundy said.
“I’ve also learned about networking
with people.”
“It’s been an eye-opening,
life-changing experience
for me,” Dingle said. “It’s
helped me grow up, become
more sociable and presentable.
The last few years I’ve
mentored the younger kids
and it’s great to take on a
leadership role.”
Waiting to hear from the
WGA proved tense for all
three of the students.
“I was shaking when I
opened the package,” Ernst
said.
