Style Magazine February 2019

For those who appreciate non-fiction fairy tales (please tell me I’m not the only one!), this month’s issue has plenty of them—eight in all. Flip to page 43 to read the touching tales of couples who live locally and, to us, define what a successful duo looks like. Let it serve as a reminder that romance has no rhyme or reason; the ways people meet, what works for each relationship, and the definition of “love” all differ. The one commonality all couples seem to share? Everyone truly “likes” their partner as a person, accepts them wholeheartedly, and finds them funny (humor always seems to help!). In other matters of the heart, because—in addition to Valentine’s Day—February is also American Heart Month, Sharon Penny shares “10 Heart-Healthy Tips” to keep your ticker in tip-top shape on page 20. And there are plenty more reasons to fall in love with this issue, too. From a six-day road trip through Northern California and Southern Oregon (page 78) that includes stops at two national parks and suggestions on where to stay and play; to nursery décor tips, courtesy of design guru Kerrie L. Kelly, that are equally adorable as they are affordable (page 73); and an inspiring Get to Know on Granite Bay resident, former NBA player, and current Sacramento Kings assistant coach Bobby Jackson (page 18), there’s an article for all.

MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT
15TH ANNIVERSARY WORLD TOUR
THU-SUN MAR 21–24
The Tony ® Award-winning Best Musical, Monty Python’s Spamalot, begins its
search for the Holy Grail in the Fall of 2018. This outrageous musical comedy
is lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail with a
book by Eric Idle and music and lyrics by the Grammy ® Award-winning team of
Mr. Idle and John Du Prez, Spamalot tells the tale of King Arthur and his Knights
of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows,
killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen, and show-stopping musical numbers are
just a few of the reasons audiences worldwide are eating up Spamalot!
LEGALLY BLONDE–THE MUSICAL
FRI-SUN APR 5–7
OMG! Based on the beloved movie, Legally Blonde–The Musical is a journey from
the sorority house to the halls of justice. Elle Woods appears to have it all, until
her boyfriend dumps her to attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back,
Elle uses her ingenuity and charm to get into Harvard too, tackling stereotypes,
snobbery and scandal along the way. Driven by memorable songs and explosive
dances. Legally Blonde - The Musical warms the heart, “a high-energy… hymn
to the glories of girlishness” (New York Times)
SOMETHING ROTTEN!
THU-SAT APR 18-20
With 10 Tony ® nominations including Best Musical, Something Rotten! is
“Broadway’s big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in 1595, this hilarious smash
tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to
write their own hit play while the “rock star” Shakespeare keeps getting all
the hits. “The Producers + Spamalot + The Book of Mormon. Squared!”
(New York Magazine).
MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL
THU-SUN MAY 9-12
Four women at a lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra and
memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex
and more. Set to classic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. “You’ll love it ...
It’s hilarious ... Go see it!!!” (Joy Behar, The View).
C
all me crazy,
but I love love.
As a young, very
single, twentysomething,
I
was obsessed
with finding “the one.” In my mind, it was
going to be just as magical as the movies.
We would meet while I was traveling the
globe, he’d have an adorable Australian
accent, and we’d live happily ever after
in a beachfront bungalow. But, as we all
know, life—and love—has its own agenda. The windswept surfer on the white horse never came
waltzing my way and all my overseas attempts at dating ended in disappointment. I returned
stateside as single as ever.
It wasn’t until years later (way past my imaginary wedding date)—while living at home with
my parents and working an emotionally draining job as a caregiver—when my now husband
entered the picture. The story was nothing like the one I’d played out in my head time and
time again, but the reality was so much better than I could’ve ever imagined. Ten years later,
and I have my forever best friend with benefits—the person who I can be both embarrassingly
silly and sometimes serious with; the person who challenges
me to be better but always recognizes and acknowledges my
“You come
strengths; the person who shares my values, backgrounds, and
to love not beliefs; and the person who constantly makes me laugh with
his witty, unfiltered ways. We’re a match (originally) made in
by finding Auburn, and I’m grateful every day that we found one another.
For others who appreciate non-fiction fairy tales (please tell
the perfect
me I’m not the only one!), this month’s issue has plenty of them—
person, but eight in all. Flip to page 43 to read the touching tales of couples
and the definition of “love” all differ. The one commonality all
person couples seem to share? Everyone truly “likes” their partner as
a person, accepts them wholeheartedly, and finds them funny
perfectly.” (humor always seems to help!).
Sharon Penny shares “10 Heart-Healthy Tips” to keep your ticker in tip-top shape on page 20.
And there are plenty more reasons to fall in love with this issue, too. From a six-day road trip
through Northern California and Southern Oregon (page 78) that includes stops at two national
parks and suggestions on where to stay and play; to nursery décor tips, courtesy of design guru
Kerrie L. Kelly, that are equally adorable as they are affordable (page 73); and an inspiring Get
Enjoy the magazine and the (short) month. Cheers!
WHAT WAS YOUR
FIRST CAR AND
HOW DID IT MEET
ITS DEMISE?
“A 1951 Buick Roadmaster Coupe.
I traded it for a new engine in my
1966 VW Beetle Convertible.”
—Terence P. Carroll
“My ’07 Honda Accord started
guzzling oil in November 2017, and
the mechanic suggested I trade it
in. I have a better car now, but I still
miss Babes and our stoplight dance
parties.”—Alyssa Mielke
“A 2002 (model number, not year)
BMW. It was my dream car when
I was 16, and my mom bought it
for me. She also sold it a couple
months later when I was caught
cutting school. Yep, I was that
kid."—Julie Ryan
“A used blue Chevy Nova, which I
loved and called Sapphire. Sadly,
it got stolen. The police called to
say they found the car, but it was
stripped down to barely nothing.
I cried.”
—Debbie Newell Juhos
“A pearl white Cadillac Eldorado. It
was amazingly comfy but tested my
inner strength (and wallet) to the
point that I sold it, so I could stop
paying for repairs.”
—Sabrina Becker
“Esmerelda, my faithful green Renault Alliance.
She drove me cross-county, to and from
my job and college, and even survived
an accident. However, one evening
while driving with friends in a
terrible snowstorm, Esmerelda
couldn’t see the median and hit it
going 40 miles per hour. Sadly, the
damage done was far more than
her worth, so she was sent to the
automobile graveyard.”
SEASON’S EATINGS
Fennel—oftentimes overlooked in markets—rewards consumers
with a pop of licorice flavor and tons of nutrition. A flowering
member of the parsley family, it’s a hardy perennial herb with
yellow flowers and feathery leaves that’s harvested with its large
bulb. Like celery, all parts are edible. The best part? Most fennel
available in American markets is grown here in California. To learn
more about this medicinal food that’s currently in season, and for
the recipe to make Braised Fennel and Potatoes with Kumquat
Granite Bay resident Bobby Jackson
and his sister grew up in the projects of
Salisbury, North Carolina. Raised by a
hard-working single mother, Jackson’s only
dream as a kid was to one day play for the
NBA, so he could repay his mother for all
she gave him. “I wanted to take care of her
for the rest of her life,” he recalls. “It was
the only thing that motivated me.” From
the age of eight, he started playing pick-up
games with kids in the neighborhood and
would practice for hours after school, often
emulating the moves of his childhood hero,
Michael Jordan.
It was a long, tough road, but the
guidance of his mother and a few good
coaches helped Jackson stay away
“My mom always
taught me that if you’re
blessed [you should]
bless other people.”
from the drugs and gangs that infested
his neighborhood. He went on to the
University of Minnesota, where he
was drafted into the NBA and played
professionally for 12 years—finally
realizing his dream of providing a better
life for his family.
These days, Jackson is the assistant
player development coach for the
Sacramento Kings. He’d previously played
on the team for five years (known to
fans as “Action Jackson”), so coaching
there seemed like an ideal transition—an
opportunity to guide others the way he’d
once been mentored.
Sadly, his mother passed away
from cancer in 2004; in her honor, he
formed the Bobby Jackson Foundation,
a nonprofit that raises funds for
cancer-awareness and research,
among other charitable causes. “My
mom always taught me that if you’re
blessed [you should]
bless other people.”
Heart-
Healthy Tips
By Sharon Penny
Contrary to popular belief, hearts are
not made to be broken. They’re made
to keep us alive! As heart-owners, it’s
our job to treat them well and make sure
they stay in tip-top shape. In honor of American
Heart Month, we sourced some expert advice on
how to keep your heart unbroken, health-wise.
and diabetes control; reduces osteoporosis and risk of fractures; and helps
in weight loss and maintaining a healthier weight.”—Stanley Henjum, MD,
Cardiologist, Marshall Medical Center
Get up, stand up. “Even if you have a desk job, try to not be too
sedentary, [which] is dangerous to your health, as it increases your risk of
obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, falls, and
feelings of depression and anxiety.”—Tin Nguyen, MD, Cardiologist, Mercy
Medical Group
Raise a glass. “Drink plenty of water. During [wintertime] it’s often harder
to drink the volume of water that we do during the summer months.
However, by staying hydrated, we take some of the unnecessary strain
off the heart by ensuring blood volume is sufficient to carry oxygen to our
muscles. Specifically, the heart will be able to pump more blood with every
contraction, thus lowering our heart rate at rest.”—Mark Cavallaro, Personal
Training Director, Roseville Health & Wellness Center
Weigh your options. “Maintain a healthy weight. While many people
want to lose weight for appearances' sake, there are many health benefits
as well. Not only will you feel increased energy, but you'll reduce your risk
of heart disease, stroke, and some forms of cancer. It will also help control
blood sugar, relieve back and joint tension, and optimize your immune
system.”—Scott A. Vasconcellos, MD, Cardiologist, Marshall Medical Center
Keep it positive. “Let’s be honest, we all talk to ourselves! Self-talk can
be positive (‘I can do this’ or ‘Everything will be OK’) or negative (‘I'll never get
better’ or ‘I'm so stupid’). Considering stress may affect behaviors and factors
that increase heart disease risk—high blood pressure and cholesterol,
smoking, drinking alcohol, physical inactivity, and overeating—practicing
positive self-talk is particularly important.”—American Heart Association
Move more. “Exercise is good for the heart in a number of ways. It reduces
the chance of major cardiac events (heart attack and sudden cardiac death);
lowers blood pressure and cholesterol; improves insomnia, depression,
Dog (or cat) is your copilot. “Having a pet dog or cat can help lower
the spikes in blood pressure when stressed and help promote a more active
lifestyle. (Fido won’t let you skip out on your daily walks!)”—Alyssa Rose,
CTRS, Recreation Therapist, Sutter Rehabilitation Institute
Breathe easy. “If you consistently snore or are a mouth breather, get
tested for sleep apnea. Many people don't realize it, but snoring and trouble
breathing in sleep directly affect the heart, leading to high blood pressure
and irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation); in some situations, it can trigger a
massive heart attack or stroke.”—Amer Khan, MD, Medical Director of Clinical
Quality for Sutter Independent Physicians, Founder of Sehatu Sleep Roseville
Let’s get physical. “Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate activity
every day. You can even combine several activities to achieve that 30
minutes. For instance, park further from the store so you increase the
number of steps or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Little changes
daily have positive results over time.”—Mark Cavallaro, Personal Training
Director, Roseville Health & Wellness Center
Get fresh. “A heart-healthy diet consists of fresh vegetables, lean proteins,
and ‘good fats’ (such as olive oil and avocados). Processed foods should be
avoided.”—Rishi Menon, MD, Cardiologist, Sutter Independent Physicians and
Roseville Cardiology
Take it from Thoreau. “Exercise 30 minutes daily, or every other day.
Perform an activity that you enjoy: bicycling, swimming, jogging, treadmill,
elliptical, or just plain walking. As Henry David Thoreau said, ‘An early morning
walk is a blessing for the whole day.’”—George Fehrenbacher, MD, Medical
Director, Cardiac Cath Lab at Sutter Roseville Medical Center
Q: What exactly is white
chocolate?
A: White chocolate is made with cocoa
butter. After roasting, the beans/nibs
are milled to create cocoa liquor (pure
chocolate), which is then pressed to
extract the cocoa butter. To make true
white chocolate, only cocoa butter, milk,
and sugar are used. Additionally, true
white chocolate isn’t pure white; it has
an ivory hue from the cocoa butter. Real
white chocolate must also be tempered
to create a nice shine and smooth
texture.
Q: What’s the difference between
blinds and shutters?
A: Blinds have cords, which lift,
lower, and tilt the window covering, in
addition to holding the slats to the
headrail above and keeping everything
connected. Cords are unattractive, wear
out over time, are hard to dust around,
and can become soiled by hands. They
can also pose a serious safety threat to
children and pets.
Shutters are louvered panels
mounted into a stationary frame that
open using hinges, thus eliminating
all cords. Initially, shutters are a bigger
investment because of the way they’re
mounted/installed, but they ultimately
add to the physical structure of the
home and add long-term value to it.
Both blinds and shutters offer
variable light control by tilting slats,
but shutters have more flexibility since
the slats can be split to tilt separately,
allowing the bottom to be closed for
privacy and the top kept open for
natural light. Additionally, shutters are
about three times more energy efficient
than blinds.
TIPS to Improve
& Maintain
Heart Health
February is
NATIONAL HEART MONTH
Your heart is arguably the most important organ in your body.
It pumps blood throughout your body, delivering oxygen and
nutrients to every cell, ensuring that everything is running smoothly.
Marshall Medical Center has some tips and information to help you
keep your heart healthy and to know the signs when it’s not.
SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK DIFFER
BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN
Heart disease is commonly considered “a man’s
disease.” However, it is also the leading cause of
death for women in the United States, causing
approximately one in every four deaths.
But heart attacks don’t feel the same for women
as they do for men. The symptoms in women can
be quite subtle, according to Lena Avedissian,
MD, a board-certified cardiologist with Marshall Medical Center.
Common and well-known symptoms of coronary artery disease
in both men and women include chest pain, tightness or pressure
with exertion. In women, symptoms can present as a burning
sensation that can occur with rest or mental stress. Other common
symptoms in women are weakness, fatigue or shortness of breath.
Dr. Avedissian notes, “symptoms of acute heart attacks in women are
not dramatic, but can be subtle signs such as abdominal or back pain,
nausea and vomiting.” These symptoms can be mistaken for less lifethreatening
conditions like acid reflux, the flu or normal aging.
It’s important to pay attention to signs that the body gives you and
request medical care.
For an appointment with a
Marshall Cardiologist, call 530-626-9488
LOWER your salt intake.
Blood pressure levels increase
due to high sodium levels in your
diet, so reducing the amount of
salt you eat will lower your risk
of cardiovascular disease. And
remember, just because you aren’t
adding salt to your food with a salt
shaker, many foods are still high in
sodium, so be sure to read the label.
Foods like frozen shrimp, many
soups and broths, instant pudding,
cottage cheese, vegetable juice,
salad dressings, pizza, sandwiches,
canned vegetables, tortillas and
bread are high in sodium
MAINTAIN a healthy weight.
While many people want to lose
weight for appearances sake, there
are many health benefits as well.
Not only will you feel increased
energy, but you’ll also reduce your
risk of heart disease, stroke, and
some forms of cancer. It will also
help control blood sugar, relieve
back and joint tension, and optimize
your immune system.
EXERCISE is good for
the health in a number
of ways.
It reduces the chance of major
cardiac events( heart attack and
sudden cardiac death). It lowers
blood pressure and cholesterol.
It improves insomnia, depression
and diabetes control. It reduces
osteoporosis and risk of fractures.
It helps in weight loss and in
maintaining a healthier weight.
It’s not a myth: People’s greatest fear—even worse than death—is public speaking. For
nearly a century, Toastmasters International has strived to help its 360,000 members worldwide
overcome that fear. Oftentimes, public perception of Toastmasters is members
giving speeches to one another; its scope, however, is much broader.
According to the nonprofit’s International President Lark Doley, Toastmasters
coaches all aspects of verbal and written communication, including social media
presentations, and offers hands-on leadership training. "Think about our world today,"
Doley says, "We don’t work cohesively as teams. Toastmasters helps us learn how to give
our point of view, give it with clarity, and be able to listen to the other person’s viewpoint and
respond effectively."
Groups meet weekly, biweekly, or monthly and follow similar agendas: prepared speeches,
evaluations, and extemporaneous discussions. As part of their leadership practice, members take
on varied responsibilities, including chairman, listening critic, "um/ah" counter, sergeant-at-arms,
and many more. Most meetings schedule up to three prepared speeches on assigned themes
followed by constructive feedback. A “Table Topics” period calls on members to speak without
preparation on impromptu questions. In acknowledgment of the angst speaking can cause, new
members work with mentors.
And education isn’t overlooked either. A
Pathways program builds skills in 10 areas,
including effective coaching, persuasive
influence, visionary communication,
and innovative planning. “An effective
communicator,” Doley says, “ends up really
being able to talk about anything,” which
includes, she emphasizes, conversing in
social settings.
As many as 20 Toastmasters clubs are
active in Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado
Counties. A few restrict their membership,
Spotlight on
William
Lum
by HEATHER L. BECKER
Aserendipitous story led William Lum to discover
his artistic passion later in life. After finding his
biological family, which just so happens to include
the late watercolor master Dong Kingman, he took to the
medium almost immediately and has since honed his skill
through self-learning and participation in various artist’s
organizations. Painting from the simple beauty of what exists
around him, Lum’s work—aside from his commissioned pieces—
incorporates a moment he’s personally experienced. Inspired
by the children’s story Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes,
he’s even set a personal challenge to not stop creating until
producing 1,000 paintings. “Even a painting [that] I don’t see
as a good one provides lessons on how to do better the next
time,” he shares. “From that perspective, even a lousy painting
is good; you can’t lose, so keep painting.”
HLB: How did reconnecting with your birth family lead to your
own artistic discovery?
WL: I was adopted when I was an infant and finally discovered
my birth parents at 40 years old. The discovery was all the more
exciting as both families possessed an interesting and rich heritage
dotted with notable figures. My world expanded exponentially
almost overnight. My father told me he had an uncle who was
a famous watercolor painter. I didn’t know anything about [the
medium], so the name Dong Kingman meant nothing to me, but it
piqued my curiosity about the genre. I found a cheap watercolor
set and painted my first piece at the fire station where I worked.
Another officer walked up, looked at the painting, and said, “That
looks great!” I thought he was just pulling my leg, but that’s how I
got started.
HLB: Some consider watercolor challenging. What do you love
most about it?
WL: I took to watercolor like a duck to water, and with no formal
training; I just started painting. Later, I read books and studied
techniques, and it just felt right to me. I know any new medium
can be difficult, but for me it’s been a comfortable and rewarding
one. I enjoy challenges because they push me to constantly strive to
improve—I’m never totally satisfied with my art.
HLB: Where do you seek inspiration?
WL: When I’m out and about, I look for notable things that catch
my eye: bridges, buildings, people, scenery, streets, plants, or
animals. I tell people I would paint a pile of garbage if I found it
interesting. They might think I’m kidding, but I’m actually serious.
There’s no specific place that I go for inspiration; inspiration
follows me, not the other way around.
William also enjoys
slapping the bass!
HLB: How do you push through
self-doubt?
WL: I think about it briefly but
essentially ignore the thoughts and push
on with any challenges that arise. If you
thought about every single muscle you use to walk
and had doubts that you could do it, you probably
wouldn’t be able to. At this point, I know if I start a
painting, there’s a 100 percent chance that I’ll finish it.
8LOCAL
COUPLES
WELove
BY LUNA ANONA
When it comes to love, anything goes. The ways
people meet and their secrets to success are as
unique as each couple. In honor of Valentine’s
Day, we tracked down eight real-life duos whose
stories and admiration for one another are
guaranteed to give you relationship envy.
Photos by Erica Baldwin Photography.
Faith and Curtis Knappenberger, Rocklin
Faith, 40, and Curtis, 39, each came to the altar with three
children and have affectionately dubbed themselves
the “Knappy Bunch”—a modern-day Brady Bunch as
a family of eight. It was serendipity for Faith when the
handsome country boy who caught her eye at church
turned up in her match.com inbox. After six months of
dating, they tied the knot.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST
IMPRESSION OF THE OTHER PERSON?
Faith: I first noticed Curtis and his kids at Destiny
Christian Church in Rocklin. He stood out because he was
wearing cowboy boots and I wondered where this cute
country boy was from! A few weeks later, I got a message
on match.com. After we’d been chatting for a while, I
realized he was the same guy from church. We had our first
date about a week later at Starbucks, where he was friendly,
hilarious, open, and kind. We immediately clicked, and I
knew it was something special.
Curtis: I found her on match.com, where we had actually
signed up on the same day. After seeing her pictures
online, I thought she was beautiful…and way out of my
league. I read more of her profile and knew she was the
one I wanted, so I messaged her immediately. My first
impression on our coffee date was “awe.” I was seriously
blown away.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON?
Faith: He keeps me constantly entertained with his fun
personality, comments, and jokes. Curtis is also amazing
at complimenting me and making me feel loved and
treasured.
FEBRUARY 2019 | stylemg.com 43

8 LOCAL COUPLES WELove
Curtis: She’s so beautiful, inside and out, and is the most driven and
motivated person I know.
WHAT’S ONE THING THE OTHER PERSON DOES THAT DRIVES YOU NUTS?
Faith: Curtis has zero filter, and although it can be funny, sometimes it
causes issues and frustration.
Curtis: She over-thinks and over-analyzes things.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES?
Faith: Forgive easily and often and be the other person’s biggest fan and
greatest supporter. With a blended family, it’s very important to be a united
front and to have lots of patience, understanding, and love for everyone.
Curtis: Realize that none of us are perfect, and we all have flaws and
baggage. Don’t expect your partner to be just like you, to think like you
do, or to act like you do. If you love your partner, you’ll accept their flaws
and differences, you’ll be patient, and you’ll realize that they’re worth
fighting for. Communication and forgiveness are a must.
Marichelle and Sherif Boctor, Folsom
Marichelle, 52, and Sherif, 51, both immigrated to the U.S. from the
Philippines and Egypt, respectively, in 1975. They were junior high school
sweethearts—well, until somebody got dumped over a bad haircut. The
two reconciled a few years, and inches, later, and recently celebrated
their 33rd anniversary.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE OTHER
PERSON?
Marichelle: We met in seventh grade. I thought he was so cute with his big
afro and high-pitched, hoarse voice. We “dated” for three weeks, until he
broke up with me after my sister cut my hair. I hated him!
Sherif: We first met in junior high school. I couldn’t stop thinking about this
cute Filipino girl. She was just so cute and funny and tiny—not even five feet
tall. We were actually the same height, but she never grew! We were each
other’s first boyfriend and girlfriend for a short period of time—until her
sister cut her hair and she looked like a boy, so I dumped her when we were
13. Her hair, among other things, had grown when we got to high school. We
got together again at the start of our senior year and have been together ever
since.
HOW DID YOU KNOW THE OTHER PERSON WAS “THE ONE”?
Marichelle: After dating for 10 years, we were still the best of friends—and I
didn’t want to start over!
Sherif: I was always happy and laughing whenever we were together, and it’s
still that way today.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON?
Marichelle: He’s kind, generous, and freaking hilarious. He’s the best person
in the world.
Sherif: She’s the most amazing mother, is incredibly beautiful, and the
funniest person I know.
WHAT’S ONE THING THE OTHER PERSON DOES THAT DRIVES
YOU NUTS?
Marichelle: He is the worst driver.
Sherif: Her OCD. Once she does something one
way, life almost stops if you try to change it.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE FOR
OTHER COUPLES?
Marichelle: Don’t take yourself too seriously. Sherif
can always make me laugh.
Sherif: Laugh a lot.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE LOVE?
Marichelle: I think love is being just as content whether you’re sitting
on the couch watching television or on a beach in some beautiful
place, as long as you’re together.
Sherif: Putting what makes your partner happy ahead of what makes
you happy.
Cristina Mendonsa and Jonathan Robinette, Folsom
It was more than 26 years ago when news
reporter Cristina, 50, met middle school teacher/
administrator Jonathan, 49, who was working as
the bar manager at a favorite happy hour watering
hole. The pair clicked instantly and married a year
and a half later, crediting their loves of hiking and
humor to their relationship’s success.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST
IMPRESSION OF THE OTHER
PERSON?
Cristina: A mutual friend
introduced me to Jonathan.
He was managing a bar
in Denver where all of us
reporters would hang out
after the late-night newscast.
My first impression? He was
intelligent and witty, and he
had the bluest eyes I had
ever seen…and just enough
mischief in them to be
exciting.
Jonathan: We met through
a mutual friend, and my
first impression was literally,
“That’s the woman I’m going
to marry.”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER?
Cristina: Definitely hike. We’ve hiked a lot of the
Oregon coast, we’ve hiked in Canada, and we love
local trails. We’re happiest with a pack and miles of
trails to explore. We also love to wine taste and go
on culinary tours.
Jonathan: My favorite thing to do with her is to be
a middle-aged hippie staggering through the North
American wilderness.
WHAT’S ONE THING THE OTHER PERSON DOES THAT
DRIVES YOU NUTS?
Cristina: I don’t like the way he loads the
dishwasher, and some of his music drives me nuts.
I’m trying to pull him into anything post 1998.
Jonathan: When she tries to pull me into any
music post 1998.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE FOR
OTHER COUPLES?
Cristina: Every day, I wake up and try to think of
what I can do to make his life easier today. He does
the same for me. When I wake up for work at 2:30
a.m., my coffee is made. He cooks most nights. And
he has a great sense of humor, which is huge. The
only arguments I remember have ended with one
of us making a joke—and he has better jokes.
Jonathan: If you learn to cook well, she won’t
make you learn to dance. Everyone wins.
8 LOCAL COUPLES WELove
Erin and Dane Forsberg, El Dorado Hills
Perhaps it’s in their blood: High school sweethearts Erin, 33, and Dane, 34,
found out that both of their parents shared the same wedding anniversary—
June 24, 1978—and lived on the same rural road. The couple, who wed on
June 22, 2012, will welcome their first daughter this March.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE
OTHER PERSON?
Erin: We met at Oak Ridge High School through mutual friends in 2002.
Dane was a junior and I was a sophomore. I always wanted to meet him
because he was cute, smart, athletic, and I knew he lived down the street
from me. I was so excited when we ended up in the same Spanish class,
where we instantly hit it off.
Dane: We first met when a mutual friend brought her over to my
house to hang out. Her bubbly personality was infectious, and I
remember immediately wanting to get to know her better. I lucked out
when she showed up in my Spanish class on the first day of school.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER?
Erin: We love music festivals and getting together with friends for a
night on the town.
Dane: Discovering new artists to listen to and seeing our favorite
bands live at concerts and music festivals.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON?
Erin: His calm demeanor and that he never loses his temper. He’s also a
great dancer.
Dane: Her beautiful blonde curly hair. I also love her outgoing and positive
nature—she’s always the life of the party.
WHAT’S ONE THING THE OTHER PERSON DOES THAT DRIVES YOU NUTS?
Erin: The way he “cleans” or does the dishes. Also, he leaves bags open,
like chips, crackers, and cereal, and then they go stale.
Dane: She tends to have a tornado effect on her
closet. As the week goes on, more and more
clothes are strewn about as she tries on
multiple outfits before making a final
decision.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP
ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES?
Erin: Keep it simple and take
it slow. We genuinely like each
other as friends, trust each
other, and balance each other
out.
Dane: Find the things you love to
do together and make the time to
do them.
Kate and Bobby Gonzalez, Roseville
Dance studio owner and traveling consultant
Bobby, 55, thought he never wanted to get
married again. Spoiler alert: He was wrong.
Kate, 34, a dance instructor and now studio
owner herself, waltzed into his life and the
couple married two years ago.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS YOUR
FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE OTHER PERSON?
Kate: We met through work. Bobby was
already well known in the industry, so he
was pretty intimidating to me at first.
Bobby: I met Kate through our work
at Arthur Murray Dance Studios. I
was living in San Jose and she was
living in the Sacramento
area. I moved to
Roseville and got to see
her more frequently,
as our circle of friends
became closer, and we
got to know each other
better over the years.
My first impression of
her was that she was
a talented dancer and singer. At that time, I
thought of her as a friend.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO DATE NIGHT?
Kate: We go grocery shopping and he cooks
me a meal.
Bobby: We’re always busy and on the go, so
we love spending time at home. Typically, I
cook dinner for us. We also like to get foot
reflexology together. If we could hold hands
during the massage, she would love it.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO
TOGETHER?
Kate: I’m a cuddler. I can never get
enough cuddles!
Bobby: Reflexology, naps, and
traveling.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT
THE OTHER PERSON?
Kate: He’s the best traveling
companion and the ultimate
gentleman. He still opens my car
door. He’s kind, empathetic, and
can light up a room when he
walks in. He’s an
amazing cook,
does laundry and
irons clothes better
than I do, and he takes very
good care of his shoes.
Bobby: Kate is a loving, kind person. She’s
super smart, motivated, and giving. She’s
a big thinker and she makes our goals
happen. I love her heart and that we share
the same faith.
WHAT’S ONE THING THE OTHER PERSON DOES
THAT DRIVES YOU NUTS?
Kate: He’s a slow driver and always waits until
the garbage is overflowing before he takes it
out.
Bobby: When she does laundry, she washes
everything in the washing machine and dryer.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE FOR
OTHER COUPLES?
Kate: You can never say “I love you” too many
times to each other.
Bobby: Take time to hold hands. It’s OK to be
sappy.
8 LOCAL COUPLES WELove
Marian and Michael McKone, Gold River
Together since 1957, Michigan natives
Marian, 88, and Michael, 89, are
celebrating 62 years of marriage. A retired
defense litigator, Michael’s work brought
him to California some 60 years ago, and
the couple decided to call Sacramento
home. The long-time empty nesters (sons
Michael Jr. and Brian are in their late 50s)
are, in fact, just like us: They, too, spend
a lot of their free time scrolling through
Netflix.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS
YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE OTHER
PERSON?
Marian: I met Michael when I was a
student at the University of Michigan.
We met through mutual friends, but
he was on a date with another woman
at a party. I had heard his name, and
I had a date too! A few days later
he called me up. I thought he was
very handsome—he is still very
handsome!
Michael: Frankly, I can’t recall. I
know it was favorable.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO
TOGETHER?
Marian: We can’t get out together
as a couple much anymore, but
we like watching Netflix.
Michael: We watch The Office.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE OTHER
PERSON?
Marian: His sense of humor. Even if we’re at
Julie and John Hilton, Lincoln
It’s a tale of boy hears girl on the radio, boy sends flowers to girl’s work
and insists he isn’t crazy, boy meets girl, and they end up living happily
ever after. Married for 12 years, Julie, 47, and John, 51, are a charming
example of what can happen when you tune in.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE
OTHER PERSON?
John: Julie worked for a local country radio station, and I listened to
her for several years. I wanted to meet the voice on the radio
that made me laugh every morning. I assumed she was
getting married because she left the station for a
couple of years. Years later [after she returned, and
I found out she was single], I contacted the radio
station asking for her e-mail address, but it was
incorrect. (Thanks, Tom.) A couple of months
later, I sent a half-dozen roses to her office
with a card explaining who I was and saying I
wanted to meet her and wasn’t a weirdo. On our
first date, my impression was that she had an
attitude and could hold her own, but she was also
very funny and beautiful.
Julie: As soon as I got the roses and read the card,
I thought, "Nope. Not going out with this guy." I e-mailed
him to thank him, in case he was cuckoo and was waiting for me in the
parking lot, upset because I didn’t thank him. I told some friends about
what happened, and it turned out I knew people who knew him,
and everyone said I should go out with him. It took a couple
weeks of e-mailing before I agreed to meet him for a beer.
When I walked in, I thought he was handsome but also
nervous. He was very polite—he shook my hand when
we said goodbye. I still make fun of him for that.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER?
John: We like to golf, hike (it’s been a while), and go
wine tasting.
Julie: I like to make him go to Disneyland as often as
possible.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE OTHER
PERSON?
John: Definitely her sense of humor and her
kindness. She’s also still the most beautiful
woman I know.
Julie: I love his dedication to our family. I
love how he can explain things, whether it’s
Common Core math or how to deal with
things happening in life. I love his sense of
humor and his smile. And I love how he’s
my sugar daddy now.
Photos by Erica Baldwin Photography.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE
FOR OTHER COUPLES?
John: Make sure you can live
independently, but at the same time that
you can depend on each other.
Julie: Keep laughter in your relationship.
Trust each other. Respect each other. And
bring home tacos.
8 LOCAL COUPLES WELove
Sigrid: We love concerts, plays, movies, and good dinners.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE OTHER PERSON?
Mari: She’s a super strong woman.
Sigrid: She’s funny!
WHAT’S ONE THING THE OTHER PERSON DOES THAT DRIVES
YOU NUTS?
Mari: When she starts to talk to me in the morning before
coffee and when she changes things in the house.
Sigrid: When I speak seriously and she makes jokes.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE FOR OTHER
COUPLES?
Mari: Respect your alone time. Sigrid loves to meditate
and read, and I love to write, so we both take time to
ourselves. Being together but separated sometimes is not
a bad thing, and respecting that is the strongest element
in our relationship. We recently met a couple in their 80s
from Paradise at our restaurant. They lost their home in
the Camp Fire and were staying at a hotel. We offered
them the dinner and watched them; they held hands
the entire time they were eating. It’s easy to love each
other when no challenges are in the way, but what they
showed was love. That’s the secret: sticking together
when times are rough.
Sigrid: Have patience and respect and be willing to change
as life changes as well. The magical key to success is in
those moments when you think, “This isn’t the same
person I met a long time ago”; you met that person, you
fell in love, they aren’t the same person anymore, but you
love them more and more.
Mari Sciamanna and Sigrid Zandate, Placerville
Mari, 51, and Sigrid’s, 55, first date was going well—so well that they sat in the
car for half an hour after dinner. A black cat had just crossed their path, and,
determined not to jinx anything, superstitious Mari was waiting for another car to
go first. Something magical happened that night, though, because that was more
than 16 years ago. The couple now owns Amore Mio Bistro in Placerville, where
they share their second love—their love of food—with others.
HOW DID YOU MEET, AND WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE OTHER PERSON?
Mari: It was September 2002, and our first date was at an Italian restaurant in
Long Beach. We were both really nervous. My first impression was that I loved
Sigrid’s eyes. They were green and deep.
Sigrid: I loved Mari’s accent.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO DATE NIGHT?
Mari: We love to travel—our honeymoon in 2014 was to Europe with our two little
dogs.
Positively
Present
The Power of Meditation
by KOURTNEY JASON
Meditation, which is the process of training the mind,
has been around for thousands of years. “It involves
being in the present moment, aware and open to
whatever experiences arise,” says Michelle Jamieson, owner of
Sierra Mindfulness in Auburn. “You learn more about your body
and mind, [which leads] to wisdom, and are able to make more
conscious decisions about how you act and what you say and
think.” With the help of local experts, we’ve explored all aspects
of meditation—from how to do it and the health benefits, to
helpful tips on getting started and so much more.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
For Todd Dilbeck, MA, CMPC, owner
of Positive Sport & Performance
Coaching in Folsom, one of the
best things about a mindfulness
practice is that it’s not a huge
time commitment. “Research has
demonstrated that practicing a
meditative exercise four times a
week for three minutes at a time—
just 12 minutes a week—produces
neurological changes,” he says.
“These changes can be documented
within as little as two weeks of
practice. The emotional reactive
parts of the brain, as well as the
negative thinking ‘loops’ begin to
recede, while the regions of the
brain involved in focus and positive
thinking begin to thicken. This is
why I refer to meditation as ‘lifting
weights for the brain.’”
HEALTH BENEFITS
"A regular meditation practice
offers many mental and physical
health benefits, such as managing/
reducing stress and anxiety, lowering
blood pressure, enhancing sleep,
strengthening the immune system,
increasing energy and creativity,
improving your relationships,
reversing chronic illness, and more,"
says Andrea Tagamolila, spa director
at Serenity Spa | Soul Yoga with
locations in Roseville and Folsom.
Photo ©pathdoc - stock.adobe.com.
LOCATION AND FOCUS
According to Dilbeck, “The beauty
of mindfulness is that you can do
it anywhere. I typically practice at
home but have also practiced at
work, on airplanes, and in various
public spaces. Most people have no
idea when I am meditating. You don’t
need to sit in a traditional pose—that
is just a stereotype we have.” Since
meditation has many forms, Dilbeck
says you should practice the one
that works for you in the moment
FEBRUARY 2019 | stylemg.com 61

| health & wellness |
and for the purpose you want. “Some meditations focus on specific states of being, like
gratitude and compassion, while others focus on narrowing the attention on an object
or sensation,” he says.
POWER IN NUMBERS
"Meditation is something that’s very personal and yet universal," says Deepak Gilra,
a certified meditation instructor who runs the Folsom location of The Art of Living
Foundation, a non-profit educational and humanitarian organization. You can benefit
from a combination of one-on-one instruction and group sessions. “If more people
meditate together, it
creates a wave of positive
and harmonious energy
that is benevolent for the
entire community,” Gilra
says.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A common challenge
of meditation is the
thoughts that pop into
your head. “If you had no
thoughts, you wouldn’t
be living,” says Rochelle
Barcellona, founder of
Nourish Mind Body &
Spirit in Folsom. “So,
consider thoughts as
visitors. They have a
beginning and an end.
That little space between
each thought is what we consider 'the gap,’ where you can slip into pure consciousness
and pure peace while meditating.” When a thought comes into your mind during
meditation, Barcellona recommends recognizing it for what it is, then letting it go.
COMFORT ZONE
Tagamolila says the key is to be comfortable. “At any point during meditation, you can
stretch your legs or arms out and reposition yourself. Just come back to the repetition
of your mantra.” She also suggests letting go of any expectations during your meditation
and to keep at it. “Even if it’s finding five minutes in your car before you walk into the
house or work, any meditation is beneficial."
TRY IT
The following exercise comes from Jennifer Fiterre, the medical librarian and
continuing medical education coordinator at Marshall Medical Center. “Stop what you’re
doing and try to find a quiet space,” she suggests. “Sit in a comfortable position on the
floor or in a chair. Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breath. Pay attention to
your inhale and exhale and try to feel the air through your nose and/or mouth. Imagine
watching your thoughts come and go. Listen to your body and notice if, or where, you’re
holding tension. Try to take a deeper breath at each inhale and relax though each exhale.
Breathe easily and naturally. Do this for three to five minutes each day. When it’s easy for
you to practice [that much], increase the time of your session."
2R offers individual music lessons on a
variety of instruments, as well as voice
lessons. At B2R, we teach music theory by
employing both traditional and innovative
techniques to help kids develop their music skills.
Individual music lessons are just a part of our
comprehensive music program.
Playing in a band and participating in jam sessions
are also key components of our curriculum and
music program. When students have achieved
basic skills with an instrument, they are eligible to
join a band — and we encourage them to do so.
We match the playing level of the student with the
appropriate band. Our students also have access to
a professional recording studio at every site.
Our curriculum in recording
arts and audio technology
program includes classes in
both theory and practice. Visit
our school or take a look at
our website to see all that we
offer! We are America's Music
Hey, Baby!
5 Nursery
Décor
Essentials
by KERRIE L. KELLY, FASID
There's a newborn on the way, and you have a million and one
things to do before the big day, but you keep coming back to
outfitting the new nursery. It's perfectly natural, considering
that’s where you'll bond with your baby. Of course, among the many
other things you're worried about are expenses. Good news! We have
five great tips to help you build the perfect nursery—and they’re even
budget-friendly.
1 make paint A priority
This one is too simple and inexpensive to pass up. Whether you're looking for the most
soothing or stimulating color, remember that you'll be spending a lot of time in the room, too.
FEBRUARY 2019 | stylemg.com 73

| home + garden |
Considering the energy level when you're there, you
may want to lean toward a soothing shade of your
favorite hue. A great way to incorporate both are big,
bold stripes of contrasting but cool colors. Think
soft and warm grays, greens, and yellows with a
simple white stripe, or contrasting crown molding
and baseboard for a gender-neutral approach.
2
Roll Out the Rugs
Area rugs are another great way to
dramatically change the look of a room. A nursery
is such a great space to design because you have
so much flexibility in terms of color and texture,
and those two elements meet in an area rug.
Considering the fact that babies tend to make a
mess, heavily patterned or indoor/outdoor rugs are
both smart moves.
3
The Other Light of Your Life
As you've probably read in every single baby
book, light—especially natural light—is a crucial part
of development. In concert with your new paint job
and that area rug, coordinating drapery is part of a
perfect plan to modulate light and keep the color
coming. Start with a black-out vinyl shade liner so
you can achieve deep darkness even in the middle
of the day; next, add a sheer panel for soft light
and a coordinating drapery panel as your top layer.
Even with all three layers, this is a budget-friendly
makeover; plus, as baby grows, you can simply
replace the top layer.
4
Save Your Sanity with Storage
As you're about to find out, the old adage "a
place for everything and everything in its place" is
the key to life with babies. You may not always get to
putting it in its place, but if you've made sure there is
one, you're more than halfway there. Go for a simple
wall unit that covers one entire wall. Use baskets in
the cubbies to keep clean up simple and to give the
nursery a serene look when you do have a spare
moment to grab one of those baskets and scoop up
the day's leftovers. Try white or lighter wood finishes
to help the storage fade to the background and keep
some sanity in the room, too.
5
Rock That Rocker
A well-designed crib is a given, but another
area for a little splurge is a rocker. Time and time
again, clients report that they can’t believe what a
difference a quality rocker makes. Remember: You're
in for a lot of late night and early morning feeding
and soothing sessions, so why not soothe yourself a
little, too?
HIT THE ROAD
6 Days in
Northern CA and
Southern OR
by MEGAN WISKUS
Crater Lake
When’s the last time you’ve been on a quintessential all-American
road trip? The kind where you pack the car full of salty snacks and
drive unhurried with the windows down and music blasting…truly
taking in the roadside scenery and sights. A multi-day automobile
adventure is good for the soul, especially when it entails witnessing
two national parks, “the Eighth Wonder of the World,” the deepest
lake in the nation, and a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Follow the itinerary below for an epic adventure that’ll feed your
need for fun.
DAYS 1-2: LASSEN NATIONAL PARK
Bubbling lava pools, whitewashed cinder cones, and glacier-fed
lakes are just a small sampling of Lassen National Park’s awestruck
landscape. The best part? It’s only a three-hour drive from
Sacramento and is one of the least-visited national parks in the U.S.
STAY: Up until a few years ago, lodging in Lassen was lacking, but
visitors can finally find respite at Highlands Ranch Resort.
Sited just 10 miles from the park’s southwest entrance, the recently
renovated property is a destination in itself. Rustic yet chic with a
cozy, 7,500-square-foot lodge that also boasts an upscale bistro and
bar, guests have the option of bunking up in one of seven cabins
whose amenities include a gas-burning fireplace, luxury linens,
tastefully done décor, and sweeping views of the surrounding
meadows and mountains. Come morning, fuel up with a hearty
breakfast (I recommend the buttermilk biscuits and sausage gravy)
before embarking on your national park voyage.
SEE: No matter your level of adventure, opportunities abound here.
Burney Falls
to simply driving through the 30-mile park
highway, and stopping at the route’s myriad
scenic sites (Bumpass Hell, Lake Helen,
Kings Creek Falls, Manzanita Lake,
etc.), it’s impossible not to be blown away by
Lassen’s raw, rugged beauty.
DAYS 3-4: BURNEY FALLS > ASHLAND
As you exit Lassen and make your way to
Oregon’s cultural capital of Ashland, don’t
miss the chance to stop at the “Eighth
Wonder of the World”: Burney Falls. The mistfilled
masterpiece is 129 feet of pure, freefalling
beauty and makes
Ashland Springs Hotel
“The freedom of
the open road
is seductive,
serendipitous,
and absolutely
liberating.”
—Aaron Lauritsen
other waterfalls pale in
comparison. Pack a picnic
and make the effortless
150-foot walk to the overlook
for lunch with a view. As
you continue en route to
Oregon, make a pitstop at Mt.
Shasta Brewing Company
in Weed, before
arriving in Ashland.
Southern
Oregon’s humble
hamlet that’s
nestled in the
picturesque Rogue
LARKS at Ashland Springs Hotel
River Valley isn’t only easy on the eyes but
also offers a walkable downtown district full
of creative cuisine, a bevy of boutiques, and
the 93-acre Lithia Park; hot springs, awardwinning
wineries, and outdoor recreation
(hiking, biking, rafting, etc.) are also abundant.
STAY: The historic Ashland Springs Hotel,
first constructed in 1925 and lovingly restored
as of late, is a downtown destination. The
beautiful building has all the charms one
would expect from an inn of yesteryear with
the creature comforts of a modern property.
Though dining options are bountiful in these
parts, the on-site eatery, LARKS, shouldn’t
be overlooked. Celebrating the farms and
flavors of the region, dishes are scratchmade
and creatively prepared with passion.
Coupled with the hotel’s complimentary
continental breakfast, evening tea and cookie
service, and convenient city center setting,
it’s the perfect place to stay after a day of play
(and plays).
SEE: Ashland’s claim to fame,
the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival, is renowned—and
for good reason. With the
season kicking off next month
(it runs through October), you’d
be remiss to skip out. This year’s
shows run the gamut from William
Shakespeare’s As You Like It, All’s Well That
Ends Well, and Macbeth; to popular plays
like Alice in Wonderland and Hairspray; and
thought-provoking productions including
How to Catch Creation, Cambodian Rock
Band, and Between Two Knees.
DAYS 5-6: CRATER LAKE > KLAMATH FALLS
One hour and thirty minutes from Ashland,
and you’ll land in Crater Lake National
Park—known for its namesake body of water
that was formed by the eruption of Mount
Mazama about 7,700 years ago. The 1,943-footdeep
crater that’s filled solely with snowmelt
will instantly blue your mind with its crystalclear
clarity and cobalt color.
STAY: Sited at the foothills of the Cascade
Mountain Range, Running Y Ranch
Resort has enough amenities that you’d
never need to leave—think ice-skating, biking,
birding, horseback riding, tennis, golf, and
hearty cuisine courtesy of The Ruddy
Duck Restaurant. The best part? Rooms
are outfitted with plush beds and 300-threadcount
linens, spa-style bathrooms, and views
of the surrounding scenery.
SEE: The aforementioned Crater Lake is
Southern Oregon’s shimmering masterpiece.
ROAD TRIP TIPS
PACK SMART. Bring plenty of music,
snacks (including a car-sized cooler),
water, car-friendly games, and
audiobooks (bonus if they reflect the
regions you’ll be driving through).
SQUEAKY CLEAN. Tidy up your car
before, and during, your trip. At each
stop, throw away wrappers, receipts,
and other unnecessary trash.
GET A CHECK-UP. A week before your
trip, check fluid and tire levels, make
sure you’re up-to-date on oil changes,
and ensure the spare tire is fully
inflated. It’s also wise to have jumper
cables, extra wiper fluid, and coolant
on hand.
INVEST IN A ROAD ATLAS. In spots
where GPS is spotty, you can always
trust a good old-fashioned map.
Learn the legend, highlight your route,
and assign a designated copilot to tell
the driver of any upcoming turns and/
or exits.
BE FLEXIBLE. Stay open to adventure
and random detours. Remember:
The journey is half the fun!
Mount Shasta
If time is of the essence, cruising the 33-mile
Rim Drive via car and stopping at the
route’s multiple vista points is a completely
carefree and acceptable way to take in the
landmark. For those hankering to go on a
hike, however, Garfield Peak is a must and
one of the park’s prettiest, and tallest, points.
The 3.4-mile out-and-back, heavily trafficked
trail is rated as moderate and provides
panoramic views of the six-mile wide lake
and surrounding peaks. Pick up the path
from Crater Lake Lodge and be prepared for
the ultimate fresh-air fix.
As your road trip wraps up and you journey
home via I-5, you’ll be reminded just how
lucky we are to live within driving distance of
multiple national parks, a world-class theater,
and take-your-breath-away natural beauty.
Happy travels!
The Vet
Will See You Now
Dental Care 101
by BRAD CAHOON, DVM
Did you know approximately 85
percent of all pets will have
periodontal disease by the time
they’re three years old? Bacteria
in the mouth causes plaque and
tartar to develop on the teeth; if left unchecked,
this buildup leads to infections in the
mouth, foul breath, pain, loss of
teeth, and harmful effects on
other important organs,
including the heart,
kidneys, and liver.
Neglecting to maintain your pet’s oral
health can ultimately lead to negative
effects on their quality of life and a shorter
lifespan. Once a year, your veterinarian
should perform a complete physical exam,
including evaluation of the oral cavity.
If periodontal disease is found, then a
thorough dental procedure (with dental
radiographs)—done under anesthesia—is
the best course of action. Performing
dental cleanings without using anesthesia
is a superficial tooth scraping and doesn’t
effectively correct the periodontal disease.
Talk to your veterinarian if you have
concerns about the safety of putting your
pet under anesthesia. In many situations,
the risks are much lower than the benefits
gained from preventing severe dental
disease. To maintain a healthy mouth and
clean teeth in your pet, the best prevention
is brushing their teeth every day.
MARINATED MEATS—
STILL SIZZLING JUST OFF
THE GRILL, THEN DIPPED
IN ONE OF MYRIAD
SAUCES—CAN BE EATEN
AS IS, OVER RICE, OR IN A
LETTUCE WRAP.”
Since the grill was glaring at our party of two, we had our server fire up
the dragon (it’s a very tame one) as we ordered the “medium” BBQ combo
with soy garlic pork bulgogi (thinly sliced meats), spicy chicken bulgogi,
and beef brisket. Don’t be lulled into thinking the “medium” is something
one could endeavor through solo. The quantity and quality of the proteins
was impressive, and the beautifully presented platter could’ve easily fed
three to four people—especially in combination with the five-plus banchan
(small, refillable side dishes; options regularly rotate) like kimchi, pickled
vegetables, mashed potatoes, etc.; white or brown rice, mixed veggies,
dipping sauces, cheesy corn, and soup that all came complimentary. My
favorite was the kimchi jjigae soup—reminiscent of a vegetable beef stew
albeit with spicy kimchi. The mouthwatering marinated meats—still sizzling
just off the grill, then dipped in one of myriad sauces—can be eaten as is,
over rice, or in a lettuce wrap.
We also sampled an order of the most unusual and unexpected shrimp
fried rice, essentially a mound of fried rice encircled by cheesy corn and
deep-fried prawns then topped with fried seaweed, chili threads, and a
perfectly fried egg. Believe me when I say the obscure combination worked
and might even have you asking, “Why didn’t I think of that?”
One of the most popular Korean rice dishes, stone pot bibimbap—
featuring a colorful combination of vegetables (spinach, bean sprouts,
zucchini, black mushrooms, carrots) your choice of meat (or avocado), and
a fried egg served in a sizzling stone vessel filled with rice—was calling my
name. Pro tip: Fans of sauce and spice will want to add a drizzle of gochujang
(chili pepper paste that’s akin to Korean BBQ sauce) before mixing the entire
bowl of goodness together (bibimbap translated is “mixed rice,” after all) and
diving in. If you’re patient, the hot stone pot creates what paella fans know as
socarrat or crispy rice—a sensual stunner to the eyes and palate.
At this point, there was so much food on our table that I felt like sending
out an SOS, but we carried—and consumed—on.
Though a new type of cuisine can oftentimes be intimidating, Blue
House does a superb job of making you feel at ease. Throughout our meal,
the manager floated around to answer questions (there were many), expand
our Korean culinary IQ, and make us feel at home.
Kiki’s Chicken Place // Whoever came up with the idea of putting Chicken & Waffles together on the
same plate deserves some kind of award. Kiki’s Chicken Place—a local chain with brick and mortars in Rocklin, Folsom, and
Sacramento, plus a roving food truck—is worthy of a gold medal, because they added homemade maple bacon butter to the
mix. Did you read that right?! HOMEMADE MAPLE BACON BUTTER! And yes, it’s as amazing as it sounds. The combination of
a golden waffle, juicy homemade fried chicken, their incredible butter that’s both salty and sweet, and thick syrup will make
your mouth water as soon as you enter the establishment. They have plenty of other options that are just as delectable, too.
My husband and I split an order of Kiki’s Fries, which are covered in melty mozzarella,
buffalo sauce, ranch, and blue cheese then topped with their tasty chicken. They could
easily be a meal on their own. My daughters tried the chicken nuggets, and if you have kids,
you know they were born connoisseurs of when the bird is breaded then deep-fried into
golden bites of goodness. They highly recommend Kiki’s version—with ranch, of course.
CHERRY SAUCE
1/4 cup sour cherries
1 cup cherry juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 shot cherry vodka
1 tsp. vanilla
3 tbsp. butter
Arroz con Leche with Berry Sauce
Submitted by Nixtaco, 1805 Cirby Way, Suite 12, Roseville,
916-771-4165, nixta.co
BERRY SAUCE
1 1/2 tbsp. butter
1/2 cup berries (of your choosing)
1 1/2 cups sugar
Make the sauce so it has time to chill while you make the arroz (rice).
Add butter to a hot pan. As soon as it’s completely
melted, add berries. Cook and stir on medium
heat for 5 minutes. Bring to high heat and let
boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and
let cool.
In a separate, medium-sized saucepot,
add cinnamon stick to water and bring
to a boil. Add rice to boiling water (no
need to rinse beforehand; this makes
for a creamier consistency). Stir for
30 seconds on high heat. Close lid and
bring fire to low heat for 8 minutes. Remove
from heat and let rest for 10 minutes
with lid on (don’t peek!).
PURSES
1 1/2 lbs. cream cheese
1/4 cup powdered sugar, plus more
for dusting
1/2 cup black sour cherries
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup toasted macadamia nuts
1/4 cup toasted coconut
Wonton wrappers
Make cherry sauce. Bring cherries, juice, and sugar to a slow boil. Add
cherry vodka and burn it off. Reduce heat and continue cooking to make a
reduction. Finish with vanilla and butter.
Make purses. Whip cream cheese and powdered sugar together and fold
in remaining ingredients. Take one tablespoon of mixture and put in the
middle of a wonton wrapper. Take opposite corners and pinch together.
Make sure your seams are closed. Flash fry golden brown and dust
immediately with powdered sugar. Serve on a plate with cherry sauce and
finish with a sprig of mint.
ARROZ CON LECHE
1 cinnamon stick
2 cups water
1 cup long grain rice
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
Remove cinnamon stick from rice, add the whole milk,
and stir for about 5 minutes on medium heat. Add the sweetened condensed
milk and stir for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let rest.
In a martini glass or a regular old-fashioned glass, pour the sauce carefully—without
staining the sides(!)—and add the rice, then top it off with
more berry sauce and a piece of fruit. You can do as many layers as you
want and also top it off with ground cinnamon or a sprig of mint.
