DCS kits out pupils
Uniforms, shoes donated
during surprise visit
DESMOND COETZEE
Five needy pupils
were handed full
school uniforms by
officials of the
department of
correctional services (DCS)
during a surprise visit at
Mdisa Primary School, in
Mmgqesha near King
William’s Town, last
We d n e s d ay.
Avuyile Nelani, 8,
Siyamthanda Mboniswa, 10,
Ayabonga Tomose, 9, and
twins Palisa and
Siyamthanda Ngcombela, 8,
were recipients of new
school uniforms and shoes.
King William’s Town
community corrections head
Landezwa Ngwabane and
her team of officials
conducted the
back-to-school campaign, an
initiative which aimed to
give offenders the
opportunity to give back to
the communities they have
wronged by painting and
cleaning schools.
They were accompanied
by Surgeon Tom who retired
from the service in
December (“High praise for
‘i n s p i r at i o n a l ’ DCS retiree”,
December 20 2018). His
family handed over a
donation to the department
during his farewell function.
“This school was
identified as one of the
schools in the rural areas
that are in need of
assistance because of its
poor condition,” N g wa b a n e
said.
“During the visit at the
school, it was also noted
that there are pupils who are
coming from disadvantaged
families who don’t have
school uniforms and with
the generous and kind
donation done by Tom, this
office managed to buy the
u n i fo r m s , ” N g wa b a n e
added.
An elated Mdisa principal,
Mthobeli Boqwana, said: “I
am short of words to thank
King William’s Town prison
for such a wonderful gift to
our needy kids at the
beginning of the year.
“We, as the school
governing body, parents and
the community of Ngqwele
Location are truly grateful
for the gesture shown by
Ngwabane and her team
and also to Tom who will be
missed tremendously by the
school,” he said.
Tom told the GO! he
almost burst into tears when
he saw the smiles on the
faces of the kids and their
parents.
“I truly know the kids
appreciate their new
uniforms and my wish is to
see them progressing and
although I have retired from
the department, I will
continue with this
programme for the rest of
my life as it is the way I am
doing my ministry,” he said.
WATER WASTE: Water flows down a stairway onto
the sand next to the Bonza Bay beach lifeguard
station. A concerned citizen called the GO! &
Express and said the water had been flowing for
more than a week. He said he called the
municipality but to no avail. The GO! visited the
site on Monday, where the air was permeated by
a nauseating stench, with water originating from
Seven members of the Round
Table No 1 East London fulfilled
their promise of taking on the
gruelling Ironman 70.3 in East
London on Sunday.
Ryan Baisley, Ntobeko Nzuza,
Daryan Rowe, Bazil Frewen,
Warren Biagara, Jethro Penny
and Ruan Jordaan had braved the
challenge in honour of Ubuko
Mpotulo who was diagnosed with
meningococcal septicemia.
Mpotulo had to undergo lower
limbs and finger amputations at
the age of three, after blood
vessels were damaged and
obstructed his arteries, cutting off
his blood supply.
Bailsey said four of the seven
athletes were first-timers at the
Ironman challenge.
“From the swim in the roughest
conditions we’ve ever
experienced, to headwind cycle
course that forced us to pedal
downhill, with the sun coming out
as we were hitting the 21km run,
it made things tough,” he said.
The Round Table members
International Childhood Cancer Day
will take place on February 15 and
the East London community is
encouraged to support this event.
Childhood Cancer Foundation SA
(Choc) also celebrates 40 years of its
e x i st e n c e .
The organisation said it aims to
improve survival rates through its
training and awareness programmes
done by health professionals.
“As the only organisation in South
Africa that provides nationwide
comprehensive support to children
and teenagers with cancer,
life-threatening blood disorders and
their families, we strive to increase
our reach every year,” Choc CEO Carl
Queiros said.
The country has some of the
lowest numbers of survival rates
when it comes to childhood cancer.
According to the organisation,
about 2,500 children were diagnosed
every year, but Choc could only reach
about 1,500.
For those children who were
diagnosed, the survival rate is as low
as 55%.
Choc regional manager Debbie
Kleinenberg said ICCD badges, heart
pins or bracelets could be purchased
to spread the message.
Chocolate slabs can also be
bought to support the campaign.
“Participants of the campaign, who
place a minimum order of R1,000,
will be put into a lucky draw to win a
NEW DAWN: The sun rises over Cintsa Bay
Locals can look forward to yet
another chilled start to the
weekend although things should
warm up by the end. If it’s any
consolation, East London looks set
to get some much-needed rain.
Thursday will be mostly overcast
with some light rain falling in the
afternoon. Temperatures start at
22°C and rise to 24°C with 18km/h
winds blowing in from the
s o u t h w e st .
The rain settles in on Friday and
should hopefully get heavier. The
temperature is a bit cooler,
levelling out at just 22°C. The wind
will begin to pick up, increasing to
22km/h and switching to the
s o u t h e a st .
Saturday sees the rain drying out
with only a drizzle in the morning.
The clouds will remain, but a
maximum temperature of 25°C
means the chill is over.
Picture: VEULAH IFFLAND
Mixed bag of weekend weather on the way
Unfortunately, the warmth comes
with 25km/h winds.
Sunday will be the hottest day of
the weekend with a maximum of
28°C. The rain is completely gone,
leaving only overcast skies. The
wind is expected to slow down
back to Friday’s 22km/h speed.

AMANDA NANO
National police minister Bheki Cele and
national police commissioner General
Khehla Sitole have vowed to look into
grievances raised after an imbizo in
Mdantsane and East London this week.
The minister visited the EL CBD and
Mdantsane Golden Highway taxi ranks to
listen to community members’ concerns,
as well as those of taxi drivers.
Hundreds of concerned citizens
gathered at a marquee at Gompo
Stadium, Duncan Village, to attend an
imbizo with Cele, Sitole and provincial
commissioner Lieutenent-General Liziwe
Ntshinga.
Problems raised by irate community
members included drug use, lack of
police visibility, ensuring the safety of
children to and from school and requests
for mobile police stations.
Cele vows to act on
crime in EL township
They said these problems gave rise to
murders, rapes and robberies.
Duncan Village resident Vathiswa Qoto
singled out a popular nightclub in this
area that allegedly operated as a drug
haven. She alleged police officers were
on the payroll of the drug dealers.
A Bluewater community police forum
(CPF) member and Kwelera resident said
their police station was too far to gain
access to.
“There are not enough police vans
available and there are only three police
officers to service the area. We really
need a mobile police station,” she said.
Sitole promised action.
“We will issue a special operation for
this problematic nightclub and make sure
to involve all stakeholders and the
municipalit y,” Sitole said.
Cele admitted to a shortage of police
personnel and police vehicles in the area
and said this must be addressed.
“There’s a shortage of police nationally
and a recruitment drive must be done as
there’s a low ratio of police officers
servicing the communities,” Cele said.
He acknowledged a lack of
technological development and progress
in the police service to assist with the
volumes of cases.
“We ’ve also taken the decision not to
fix police vehicles in far-off places.
Clusters must find a central place and the
municipal councillors must allocate a
space that can be used. The youth should
be employed to fix the cars,” said Cele.
Duncan Village CPF chairperson
Ludumo Salman commended the Duncan
Village station commander and his
dedicated staff, despite the problems.
He also said the nightculb should be
closed down as it contributed to the high
crime rate.
Meals on Wheels
bring joy with teddies
SIVENATHI GOSA
Meals on Wheels have recently
started an initiative to donate teddy
bears to the elderly and those who
are suffering from Alzheimer’s
disease.
The non-profit organisation
provides food for the elderly, poor
and invalid.
“We have chosen Silver Crown
Old Age Home because they have
patients with the disease. The
teddies will help when they become
r e st l e s s , ” said Meals on Wheels
manager Jeni Campbell.
She said this was their first
community outreach programme of
2019.
“We have donated about 50
teddy bears to the residents of
Silver Crown. It was heartwarming
to see the faces light up when we
gave them the teddy bears,
especially the men.”
Campbell said they had a service
centre where the elderly came in on
a Tuesday to have lunch, tea, play
bingo and go to the library. There is
also a hairdressing salon. Members
pay R2 a year.
“We celebrate their birthdays –
just to cheer senior citizens up and
to show them that there are people
who still care for them. It seems like
society has forgotten about the
elderly, and it is sad because a
majority of them are in old age
homes,” she said.
Campbell indicated there were
plans to raise awareness about the
o r g a n i s at i o n .
“We want the public to know
more about the organisation, as it
will assist us with our financial
needs,” she said.
Supervisor of the home Nonceba
Monti said they had 40 residents at
the home – 13 males and 27
fe m a l e s .
Call to aspiring
young traders
MATTHEW FIELD
The Johannesburg Stock
Exchange has officially opened
registration for the 2019
Investment Challenge, with
schools and universities invited
to submit their teams.
The competition will run from
March until September.
The competition, now in its
46th year, is aimed at school and
university scholars who have an
interest in learning about
investments and the stock
market. Participants are sorted
into teams of four, with each
team given an imaginary R1m.
They then use this imaginary
money to trade on the stock
market and invest in actual JSElisted
shares over six months.
The winning team will receive
cash deposits into an investment
account for each team member,
while the top university team will
receive a trip to an international
stock exchange.
“This challenge is a great
vehicle for financial literacy.
“There are plenty of valuable
lessons on investment that
young bright minds take away
from participating in a challenge
of this nature,” JSE corporate
social investment (CSI) officer
Ralph Speirs said.
“We are calling on schools,
teachers and students to heed
the call to register and acquire
this knowledge and these skills.
“The long-term ramifications of
what they learn will impact
positively on their lives in the
future,” he said.
Voter registrations
swell by 700,000
MATTHEW FIELD
According to the latest report by
the Independent Electoral
Commission (IEC), over 700,00
new voters registered during the
final registration weekend last
Saturday and Sunday. This
brings the total number of
registered voters up to
26,727,921, or about 74.5% of
the eligible population.
Of the 703,794 new
registrations, 574,899 (81%)
where under 30 years old while
52% of the new registrations
were women.
The Eastern Cape came third
in total number of new
registrations this weekend, with
a total of 130,959. Gauteng was
second with 236,287 and
KwaZulu-Natal was first with
2 4 6 , 8 47 .
Regarding the number of total
voters, the Eastern Cape is again
third with 3,365,821 total voters
(12.6% of the total voters’ roll).
KwaZulu-Natal comes up second
with 5,525,22 (20.7%) and
Gauteng is first with 6,366,629
(23.8%).
The IEC also expressed
concern with the approximately
9 million eligible voters who are
still not registered. Of these
unregistered voters, 6 million are
those under the age of 30.
For those who are still not
registered, there is a small
window of opportunity to do so
at your local IEC office. This
window is open until elections
are officially proclaimed which is
expected to occur in February.
Once the elections are
proclaimed, the voters' roll
officially closes.
Meanwhile, citizens living
overseas can make use of a
registration drive which will take
place from February 1 to
February 4.
MAKING HISTORY: In a historic event for the city, the Port of East London welcomed its longest ever vessel last Thursday. The
Zen Hua 20 is 247.2m long – the equivalent of two-and-a-half rugby fields – and 41.2m across the beam. It weighs in at nearly
40,000 tonnes and required three tugs to successfully dock. Before the ship could safely dock, the port had to undergo in-depth
preparations. Port pilot Billy Rowe travelled to the Port of Ngqura in Port Elizabeth in order to observe the vessel’s manoeuvring
abilities. ‘Welcoming a vessel of this size requires meticulous planning and flawless execution. Our marine crew worked
efficiently in planning and arranging the optimal conditions to ensure that the vessel entered and docked safely and
incident-free,’ Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Port of East London port manager Sharon Sijako said. Rowe said: ‘It is
exciting to play a part in the making of port history. I am grateful for the support of the various crew members who assisted me
in docking the vessel safely.’
‘Bad Batch’ so bad it’s good
MATTHEW FIELD
Have you ever heard of the
phrase, “so bad it’s good”?
It refers to works of art –
usually film – that are bad in
such an over-the-top manner
that they swing right around to
being good again. Movies such
as 2003’s The Room and
2010’s Birdemic are considered
classics in this genre. Well,
now Netflix has given us
another one: 2016’s The Bad
B at c h starring Suki
Waterhouse, Jason Momoa
and Keanu Reeves.
The story follows Arien
(Waterhouse) who has been
evicted to a massive desert
where all of society’s
undesirables are kept. In order
to survive, she has to face
enemies such as a sleazy
psychedelic cult under the
control of Reeves’s character
and a gang of bodybuildingobsessed
surfer-bro cannibals
led by Momoa’s character.
In case you haven’t guessed
yet, this movie is hilariously
bad. Not bad-incompetent, but
bad like an end-of-year project
from a first-year film student
who has more passion than
sense. That’s actually where
most of its charm comes from
and even while you’re busy
laughing at all the
WACKY FUN: Not the best movie around, but ‘The Bad Batch’
is certainly enjoyable
ridiculousness, you can’t help
feel just a twinge of respect.
What makes this work most
is the dedication each
actor/actress shows for their
role. They manage to prevent
their characters from slipping
into a full-blown parody which,
given the material they’re
working with, would have been
all too easy.
Momoa, for example,
manages to take a character
who by all rights should be so
easy to hate and actually make
us feel something him.
Even Reeves’s character,
while certainly embodying all
the sleaziness of a prosperity
gospel preacher, never goes
too far that it becomes
car toonish.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s
certainly goofy, but never so
goofy that it feels unrealistic.
You can totally see this
character existing in the real
world and conning small
towns out of their money.
There’s also a surprise
cameo by Jim Carrey in this,
but I’ll leave it up to you to tr y
and find him for yourselves.
Yo u ’ll notice that I haven’t
mentioned Waterhouse’s
character yet and that’s
because it is the weakest of
the main cast. While the rest
of the performances are
colourful and interesting,
Waterhouse is just bland.
There are a few other
problems too. The story is all
over the place and can’t seem
to decide what it wants to be.
One moment it’s a wacky
adventure through the desert,
the next it’s trying to be some
sort of political allegory, then
it’s a totally serious drama
about the human condition,
and so on. It feels like a whole
bunch of movies were
slammed together and the end
result doesn’t quite click.
Set design is also very hit or
miss. Some are great, such as
the cannibal camp. In keeping
with their Californian
white-trash motif, it c o n s i st s
almost entirely out of caravans
and looks like the sort of
trailer park you’d expect to see
out in the more rundown side
of town.
Sadly, most of the movie is
spent in the vast desert wastes
and we don’t get to see as
much of these areas as I would
have liked.
The Bad Batch won’t be
winning any movie of the year
awards anytime soon, but I
would be lying if I said I didn’t
enjoy the heck out of it.
This is the kind of movie you
watch with friends and a
couple of beers and honestly,
sometimes that’s all you need.
Cabaret at Arts Theatre
AMANDA NANO
The Change the Channel
Valentine's Day cabaret will take
place at the Arts Theatre from
February 12 to 23 and is sure to
wow audiences in attendance.
Celebrating its 15th year of
existence, the cabaret has invited
organisations to take part in a
fundraising drive for themselves,
as well as for the theatre.
Cabaret organiser Vicky Luff
said in this way the theatre was
able to support the community
and also attract new people to it.
“The theatre sells tickets each
night to a different organisation for
a fee, and that is our guaranteed
amount for the theatre. Each
charity then is able to sell up to
130 tickets. It's a win for both of
us,” Luff said.
The audience can expect a fun
show produced by Luff and
Jacques du Plessis, featuring a
live band with Brett Clur on drums,
while du Plessis and Armand
Steenkamp will be on the piano.
The talented cast members include
Jon Buitendag, Kay Mosiane and
dancers, such as Emma van der
Zee and Kelly Bowman.
Eyabantwana Trust, Arcadia
Rotary, Downs Syndrome
Association, Stirling Primary
hockey and Hope Schools are just
some of the organisations that will
benefit from the evening.
“Doors open to the audience at
7pm and please bring your own
picnic basket and cooler box. Most
tickets are selling at R120,” Luff
said.
Space is still available for
February 12 and 13 for those
organisations who would like to
take part. For more information,
(Answers on Page 14)
1. What do you call a bathing suit made up of
two pieces?
2. In the original Batman and Robin comics,
what colour is Robin’s cape?
3. The letter YKK are found on almost every
4. Which piece of clothing made the news in
5. What is the “down” in a down jacket?
– CHARMAINE BAILEY
Your first
municip al
account
MATTHEW FIELD
Owning your first house can
be really confusing. There’s
just so much to take in –
from mortgage payments,
regular maintenance, and of
course, your first municipal
account.
For all you first-timers, take
note of the following
information when receiving
your bill, and things should
be a little easier.
First, there are five main
charges which will be listed
on your bill that are pretty
self-explanatory: water,
sewerage, electricity, refuse
removal, and rates and taxes.
Water is charged per kilolitre
and measured by your
municipal water meter while
electricity is usually pre-paid.
Your bill should also give
you a detailed breakdown of
the total amounts payable:
ýBasic services/
availability charges. These
are fixed amounts charged to
make up for the cost of
delivering water, electricity,
and sewerage connections to
your property;
ýItemised consumption
for water, sanitation and
refuse collection. As
mentioned earlier, water is
charged based on how much
you use. If you use pre-paid
electricity, then this won’t
appear on your bill; and
ýRates and taxes, also
known as assessment rates.
These charges go to the
municipality and help pay for
basic services and
infrastructure. All property
owners must pay regardless
of whether or not you live on
the property.
And don’t forget to always
pay on time.
‘Boys will be
boys’ critique
holds no water
MATTHEW FIELD
I’m sure we’re all well aware by
now of the latest drama from
Selborne High.
Allegedly, 15 boys got into an
altercation with another which
left the one with a split lip.
The 15 boys were suspended
after the intervention of
education MEC Mlungisi Mvoko.
I’m not here to discuss the
incident itself. It’s still too early
and we don’t have all the details
as of yet. Yes, one boy ending up
bloody because of a fight is
terrible, but the reason for the
fight is still unknown, and trying
to guess the situation with such
little information available will
only do more harm.
Instead, I want to focus on a
related matter which I have
found equally – if not more –
disturbing: the response of many
parents to the news, specifically
those who try and brush this
matter off as “boys will be boys”.
There are two examples on
Facebook in particular, that
caught my attention.
The first one says: “Boys will
be boys, it happened in my time
and it will still happen in the
future, let’s not raise sissies, it
was a one on one as per the
comments”.
The second says: “What a load
of [emoji]. That boy is a cry
baby, maybe he should rather go
to Clarendon and do typing and
home economics”.
I’d hope that I wouldn’t need
to explain why these two
comments and the many more
like them are problematic, but
the fact that real people [both
men, go figure] wrote these
without a shred of
self-awareness proves otherwise.
In both of these comments, we
see the toxic blend of
hypermasculinity and misogyny
that continues to infect our
society and contributes to the
unhealthy attitudes many men
continue to harbour towards
themselves and women.
Let’s start with the first one.
According to this person,
schoolboys beating each other
up (regardless of the reason) is
okay because, say it with me
now, “boys will be boys”.
The quickest way to prove how
bad this argument is, would be
to just point to all the boys who
manage to go through school
without punching each other in
the face. If boys really will be
boys, as this commenter
suggests, then schools like
Selborne should be active war
zones with each student
constantly fighting their peers.
Needless to say, this isn’t the
case and the majority of pupils
manage to coexist peacefully, so
this claim that violence is
somehow inherent to boys, holds
little water.
The comment then goes on to
say that since these sorts of
fights happened when he was at
school, and they will presumably
“a l way s ” happen, then we
shouldn’t worry about it.
On that note, I assume the
commenter is in favour of
abolishing laws forbidding other
crimes, since they too have
always happened and will
probably continue to happen for
the foreseeable future.
Finally, he declares that not
wanting your children to punch
each other is somehow turning
them into “sissies”. Remember
when I mentioned
hypermasculinity earlier? Yeah,
this is what I meant.
Hypermasculinity is the
excessive and abnormal
obsession with stereotypically
masculine traits such as physical
strength, aggression, and so on.
Saying that it’s not only okay
for boys to beat each other up
but that not allowing them to do
so is somehow a bad thing,
definitely qualifies. It plays into
the outdated idea that boys need
to be big, tough, and violent and
that if they aren’t, then they’ve
somehow failed at being a man.
As a proud queer person who
enjoys make-up and other more
“fe m i n i n e ” pursuits, I can safely
say this is absolute rubbish. You
don’t need to be some sort of
muscle-head jock to be a “man”
and anyone who says otherwise
is either lying or dangerously
deluded.
And now let’s look at the
second comment. The misogyny
is on full display here. First, the
commenter calls the boy a “cr y
b a by ” for . . . . not wanting to be
beat up? Okay, then. Not much
different than the first comment
we looked at.
“. . . maybe he should rather
go to Clarendon and do typing
and home economics”
And there it is, the classic
“he’s acting like a girl!” retort. I
would say this is childish, but I
know children who are more
mature than this.
The commenter says that a
boy who doesn’t want to fight or
who complains about being
beaten up, is not actually manly
and should instead be treated as
a girl. Embedded in the insult, of
course, is the misogynistic
assumption that “girl things” are
somehow inferior to “boy things”
and that no real boy should ever
want to associate themselves
with such activities.
Like the first comment, this is
also an example of
hypermasculinity in that it
obsesses over stereotypically
masculine traits and activities to
the point that anything that
doesn’t match up is openly
scorned.Such attitudes are
harmful in that they deny young
boys the true freedom to express
themselves and explore who
they are and want to be. Such
narrow thinking has no room for
deviation and frankly, that is just
sad. Just to be absolutely clear:
no, I am not saying that
masculinity is itself bad. There is
nothing wrong with boys and
men liking “boy things” just like
there’s nothing wrong with boys
and men liking “girl things”.
The problems arise when you
decide this ultimately
meaningless binary is sacrosant
and that everyone must adhere
to it at all costs. It’s that sort of
attitude that believes “boys will
be boys” is an appropriate
response to a story of a boy
getting beat up. It’s that sort of
attitude that smugly asserts that
boys are not manly enough if
they complain about
mistreatment. It’s that sort of
attitude that continues to treat
women as inferior to men. It’s
that sort of attitude that
imprisons men in a cage of
unrealistic expectations and then
offers nothing but humiliation
and shame when they inevitably
fail to meet them.
It’s high time we do away with
such harmful ideas and move
forward towards a world that
fully embraces people,
regardless of how they choose to
express their gender.

M a ke
gym nice
again
MATTHEW FIELD
Gyms are nice. They are
a convenient way to
exercise, especially if,
like me, you are usually
clueless about this sort
of thing. All the
equipment you’ll ever
need is there and there
are plenty of staff on
hand to assist.
Like most nice things,
however, gyms can be
ruined by other people.
It doesn’t matter which
gym you go to, chances
are we’ve all seen
examples of people
being inconsiderate
which can negatively
affect your experiences.
Thankfully, most
people don’t want to be
inconsiderate towards
others (I hope), so here
are three quick tips on
good gym etiquette.
ý Don’t hog the
equipment
Few things are quite
as annoying as wanting
to use a machine only
for someone else to get
on and then refuse to
give it up. This is
particularly frustrating
when you’re on a
circuit. I have lost count
of the number of times
I’ve had to stop in the
middle of a circuit
because someone
decided the timer didn’t
apply to them. If you
really need more time
on that machine, wait
for the next round.
ý Wipe the
equipment down
when finished
We ’ve all been there.
We step up to one of
the machines, get ready
to sit down, and then
we see it: a puddle of
someone else’s sweat.
Yuck. This is one of the
reasons you should
bring a towel every time
you gym. In fact, I’m
pretty sure most gyms
has a policy that says
members should wipe
down equipment after
use and if they don’t,
then they should. If you
don’t have a towel with
you, most gyms have
paper towels readily
available which you can
use.
ý Put it away when
you're finished
Putting things away
when you’re done, is
something we are
taught since childhood
and yet some people
have obviously
forgotten this lesson.
I’ve often seen
dumbbells just laying
around where their
previous user left them
even though the rack is
less than 10m away.
Not only does it
inconvenience others
who now have to waste
time looking for it, it
also poses a potential
risk since leaving this
stuff in the middle of
the floor can cause
people to trip over it.
Swimmers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to enter any of the four events on offer at the KFC Merrifield Mile taking place at Wriggleswade Dam on Sunday, 17 February
Thumbs up for Merrifield Mile
TARALYN MCLEAN
TOP swimmers have endorsed
the upcoming KFC Merrifield
Mile as an event for all ages and
abilities, as well as a great day
out for the whole family.
It is also the only open water
swim in the region.
“The race has put open water
swimming on the map in the
Eastern Cape and I have no
doubt that it will soon be as
renowned as the Aquelle Midmar
Mile [world’s largest open water
swim, held in KZN],” said
swimmer Kyle Holmes, who is
currently studying in the US on a
swimming scholarship.
Holmes is a triple champion in
the 1.6km flagship event, having
won in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
“Swimming the Merrifield Mile
was a highlight for me and
winning it three times in a row
was a dream come true,” he
said.
“I was lucky to have had three
relatively easy swims and I hope
that the conditions will be just as
good this year as they were for
me.
“Good luck to all the
swimmers and I hope to see a
new record set this year!”
Also missing in action this
year at Wriggleswade Dam on
February 16 will be
up-and-coming talent Catherine
Eland as she will be swimming
overseas in England.
“The KFC Merrifield Mile is a
perfect opportunity to push
yourself and achieve your
personal goals, while still having
such a fun time with friends and
family in a safe environment,”
she said.
Triathlon champion Josh Kent,
who won the 1.6km senior male
category last year, said he would
be putting his triathlon training
to good use in the open water
and encouraged swimmers of all
abilities to take part in any one
of the four events on offer.
“The KFC Merrifield Mile is an
awesome event, the setting
allows one to take the family and
make a day of it,” he said.
“The staggered age group
starts also allow beginners to
participate without being swum
over. The swim is challenging
but wonderfully organised. It’s a
lovely event on the EL endurance
sport calendar.”
On offer at the KFC Merrifield
Mile are four events: the 1.6km
event, 500m Dash, TerraForce
250m and a KFC Splash (for
children under the age of 9).
With a number of defending
champions away on the day, top
spots in the age categories are
up for grabs, and there are
plenty of lucky draw prizes on
offer for all swimmers who
attend prize-giving.
There is also a prize for the
school which has the most
swimmers entered.
Cambridge Primary student
Bradley Tyson, who won the
junior category of the 1.6km
event last year, encouraged
students to take part.
“I have not done any open
water swims besides the KFC
Merrifield Mile, which I truly
e n j o y, ” he said.
“The event is unique, in my
opinion, in that Wriggleswade
Dam is safe for all swimmers,
especially the younger
swimmers.” For more
Ironman success
SIVENATHI GOSA
Thousands of brave athletes flocked to
East London to take on the gruelling
Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 South
Africa on Sunday. Despite the drop in
the number of participants compared to
2018 and the shortened swimming race due to
the rough sea conditions, the event was a
success.
Ironman spokesperson Siyabonga Ndzimande
said the number of athletes who entered on
Sunday was 1,986 – 400 less than in 2018.
“The decrease was expected as last year, the
world championship was held in Port Elizabeth
and this year it will be held in France, so fewer
South Africans are willing to travel to France to
par ticipate.
“This year, 35% of the field is female, the
highest we’ve had for a long time, because we
started a Woman For Tri Initiative so we’ve got
25 extra slots for women to go to France,”
Ndzimande said.
The swimming race was shortened due to bad
sea conditions. The swim is usually 1.9km but
was cut to 1.100m for the safety of the athletes.
“The athletes were told in time so that those
who want to pull out can pull out and those
who want to go can continue.
“The safety boats and lifeguards were there
to make sure the athletes were safe,”
Ndzimande said.
The top three male winners were: Bradley
Weiss, James Cunnama and Matt Trautman.
The top three female winners were: Annah
Watkinson, Emma Pallant and Jade Nicole
Rober ts.
All top three winners received their medals
from BCM executive mayor Xola Pakati.
Weiss defeated the defending champ,
Trautman, with a time of 3:53:50.
“Coming across the finish line, I couldn't be
h a p p i e r.
“I am really stoked to have qualified for the
World Ironman later in the year,” he said.
Watkinson said she was thrilled about
winning, highlighting that the race was tough
but she kept focused all the way.
“My goal in this race was to see if I could
execute what I had done in training.
“I am looking forward to racing on Friday in
the Ironman 70.3 Dubai,” she said.
