New Radioligand Therapy

For treatment of prostate cancer

Radioligand therapy (RLT) is small

molecule designed to bind to specific

protein on the cell which is chemically

attached to a therapeutic radioactive

atom, which emit a beta radiation

to precisely deliver cell killing

radiation to the site of disease.

Novartis acquired new RLT for

prostate cancer after merge with

Endocyte. New RLT 177 Lu-PSMA-617

bind to prostate specific membrane

antigen(PSMA) which is expressed on

most prostate cancer cells and emit

beta rays. 177 Lu-PSMA-617 will be

evaluated in phase 3 clinical trial.

ACCESS TO MEDICINES EBOLA CRISIS WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM

The pharmaceutical industry

needs to ensure faster access to

medicines. Novartis leader Vas

Narasimhan has drawn attention

to poor access to medicines to

poor countries at the World

Economic Forum. In some regions

of the world, newly developed

treatments would reach people far

too late.

A spot of good news in an Ebola

crisis: Vaccine supplies are

expected to last. The World Health

Organization now predicts there

are adequate supplies of an

experimental Ebola vaccine to

control the outbreak in the

Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Top names in health and medicine

gather in Davos for World

Economic. The annual meeting of

World Economic Forum is being

attended by Vas, Johnson &

Johnson chief scientific officer

Paul Stoffels, Bill Gates and many

renowned people across globe.

SICKLE CELL TREATMENT ANTIMICROBIAL TESTS CLIMATE CHANGE

Ghana has signed a Memorandum

of Understanding with global

medicines company Novartis to

create a new public-private

partnership designed to improve

the diagnoses and accelerate

treatment for people with SCD.

Between 2010 and 2050, around

14 million newborns will be

affected by SCD, an inherited,

chronic blood disorder, which can

cause severe pain, stroke, organ

failure, and other complications,

including death. 82% of these will

be in sub-Saharan Africa.

FDA has finalized its guidance on

how to coordinate development of

antimicrobials and the tests that

determine whether pathogens are

vulnerable to them. The guidance

is designed to address an R&D

coordination problem that has

resulted in time lags between the

approval of new antimicrobial

drugs and devices that inform

their use.

Climate Change is a Public Health

Emergency. An unforeseen

example of human “climate

canaries” has emerged in Central

America and southern Mexico,

where more than 20,000

sugarcane workers have died from

chronic kidney disease most likely

caused by extreme temperature

and employment conditions that

prevent adequate hydration and

rest.

MINI PHARMA FACTORY CHILDHOOD OBESITY LOBBYING MACHINE

Novartis seeks breakthrough with

mini pharma factory. The pilot

plant on the Basel campus is little

bigger than three apartments – yet

medicines can still be developed

there. It’s “a little bit like in a Swiss

watch”, referring to the many

components housed in the tiniest

possible space. This is a novel

approach, as for Novartis and most

of its competitors it is still standard

practice for the production of

medicines to be spread over

numerous locations.

Childhood obesity has been found

to be linked to courses of

antibiotics. Five-year-olds exposed

to multiple rounds as toddlers

found more likely to be

overweight. Children who receive

four or more courses of antibiotics

between the ages of two and three

years are more likely to be obese

by the age of five, a study by Trinity

College Dublin has found.

The political war over prescription

drug practices is spawning a frenzy

of activity by outside lobbying

groups, some with names that

mask their ties to industry and one

that has gone to great lengths to

disguise its origins.
