Kia Ora and welcome,
Here we are charging relentlessly into 2019! Isn’t it hard to believe January has passed
by already? The club has experienced a quieter than normal trading month of January
compared to the last few years; yet another worrying trend hospitality establishments
face in today’s world.
As I mentioned in last months “President News”, the Board is acutely aware that we
cannot continue to sustain months as quiet as this and a huge amount of work is going
on in the background to try and counter this trend. A new marketing strategy group has
been established, led by Board member Michael Backhurst to identify and drive forward,
in conjunction with our staff, initiatives that can rejuvenate and invigorate our
great club.
We are not going to leave a stone unturned in our pursuit of improving the business
performance of the club and we are seeking assistance from our sections, so be prepared
to help if, and when we come calling. We have already been approached by
some of our groups looking to improve their contribution to the club with new ideas
and plans. We will work collaboratively with these folk to create win/win solutions as
best we can. If you, as a general member have any ideas you may wish to share, please
do not hesitate to share your ideas with any Board member, Tim or contact Micheal
directly.
Our warmest Congratulations to Amy, our fantastic Food and Beverage Manager and
her husband, Stephen on the arrival of their son, Jamin (6lb, 12oz), born early in the
New Year. Amy was hopeful that Jamin wouldn’t make his appearance until after the
festive season had concluded and lucky for us, she got her wish. Thank you Jamin!!
On another personal note, a few days following Christmas, one of our veteran members,
Val Willis succumbed to a nasty fall at her home, breaking her hip in the process.
Val is the driver of our very popular travel section and for those that partake in our
Wednesday retro roasts, will know the wonderful contribution Val does in organising
and running our veggie bingo. Following a short spell in hospital, Val is now recuperating
at home. We truly miss you Val and wish you a very speedy and successful recovery.
Finally a quick update, I am enjoying my ‘new’ job at Lyttleton Port Company and I am
pleasantly surprised at the number of their staff, (whom I have come across so far), that
still have some kind of connection with our club. (I even met past club President, Cyril
Pengelly’s nephew!)
Therefore, I am pleased to report that the Woolston Club is still well connected to its
origins!
Enjoy your month ahead everyone, and make the most of those endless hot summer
days.
Regards
Ian

_$16 Summer Sizzlers_
From 5pm Wed-Sun
Hi to all,
It has been quite a summer already and the long range forecast suggests February will also be
very warm so make sure you look after yourselves; drink plenty of water, avoid being outside
during the hottest part of the day and use plenty of sunscreen when you are out and about.
We have a busy month ahead with something for everyone with activities across
entertainment, sports and food & beverage arenas.
The cricket season is in full swing with the One Day and T20 series against India, followed by
Bangladesh’s tour with both one day and test matches later in the month and in March. At
this stage we are being given a masterclass by the Indian team but hopefully we can improve
in the remaining matches.
Waitangi Day celebrations kick off on Wednesday 6 th from 2.00pm with “kiwi tucker” and
drinks specials to help enjoy the public holiday. There is talk of a “toss the gumboot”
competition.. details on the day.
The 2019 Super Rugby competition starts on the 15 th February. Blues v Crusaders on
Saturday 16 th as they look to defend their title and go three in a row. We will be running the
annual tipping competition again $10 entry with a prize pool of $500. It was good fun last
year with plenty of banter so if you’re keen to be involved, sign up at the bar or reception.
Quiz Night is back up and running, so get a team together and come and test your general
knowledge. Free entry, prizes for winners and runner. Starts at 7.00pm every Wednesday.
Valentine’s Day falls on Thursday 14 th with a red hot deal to celebrate the occasion. $35 per
person for a two course meal (includes a complimentary glass of bubbles on arrival). If the
weather’s great, ask for an outside table to watch the sunset.
Keep your eye out for new games, rituals and promotions in Whitford’s Bar. These will be
rolling out during the month. We’ll kick things off with a Kronenbourg “Beach Kit” promotion;
purchase a pint and go into the draw to win branded beach chairs, an umbrella and
glassware.
Our first big entertainment show for this year arrives in March on Saturday 16 th with the OZ
to NZ Pure Country Dinner Show. $65.00 includes entry and dinner with a selection of
Australia’s current top country singers to dance the night away to. Should be a cracking evening,
don’t miss out.
Look forward to catching up around the Club.
Regards,
Tim
FISHING SECTION:
We had two competitions last month, both proving challenging in different areas. The
first one was held at Bailey’s Beach which is near Birdlings’ Flat. The day was awesome,
sunny with a good tail wind, which is great for casting. Lined up along the beach, saw
about a dozen rods all ready to catch something decent. Well that was the plan! 10am
saw the rods dispatched with great gusto except one. This one was launched with the
intention of getting somewhere near the Chatham Islands if the owner had his way,
only to hear a fine volley of expletives as the rod broke in half. So much for his day
fishing. Although, he did wander up and down the beach offering advice to those who
chose to listen. Everyone caught fish, even the kids, so then it was off to Tai Tapu
Domain for a BBQ. NOT!! The local council had closed the BBQ area, so we headed
home very disappointed. The following day was spent heading around lots of fishing
shops to try and find a replacement part for the rod or to buy a new one.
Onwards to competition number two. Down to Rakaia, south of the river mouth where
the sea conditions were murky and discoloured and blowing a howling easterly.
Challenging to say the least when casting. But some managed to get bait in the water
and were rewarded with some fish. Not a lot were caught as we had competition with a
sea lion cruising along just past the first breaker. However, we finally got to have our
BBQ which was thoroughly enjoyed by those present. February sees some of us heading
down to Twizel for another competition on the lakes.

QUOITS SECTION:
Quoits started the new year with a big tournament on Saturday 26th January.
The Dave Copeland Memorial Trophy is an important game to the three clubs
still playing quoits. We were pleased to have Ashburton and Richmond joining
us to play drawn pairs on the day. The conditions were pretty good on the day,
but didn't get as hot as predicted.
Altogether, 16 players assembled along with another dozen or so supporters so
there was a good sociable crowd. A BBQ was held at the end of play but our one
refused to ignite so we borrowed the Clubs’ BBQ which also gave us a bit of
trouble! A few of the members tried to sort the issue and eventually it was all
go!
The games were all fun and everyone had a good few laughs at some of the
efforts of throwing quoits. It can be quite frustrating at times and not always
consistent throwing.
The winners on the day were Andy and Dave, second was Kevin and Jimmy.
There were four ringers; two from John P, one from Dave and one from
Suzanne. Congratulations to everyone!
We had a great feed with members bringing salads. Leigh and Marian manned
the BBQ again. We all had an enjoyable afternoon with a few drinks of course.
Everyone there contributed somehow to the running of the event so it was all
smooth going. Thanks to our great team.
On Saturday 2nd February, Ashburton is coming again and Richmond will be
running the day at
the Club so if anyone
wants to see what
goes, you are most
welcome to come to
our area behind the
Sports Hall. We will
be there around
12pm.

good start to the year with 14 players.

2nd - Mick Duggan
3rd - John Saundercock
The next game will also be played at Avondale on Sunday 10th February at 9am. Visitors
welcome.

Golf Course. Hope all goes well for them.
Woolston are the current champions!
A fun day had by all! PS. How many
people does it take to get a BBQ started?
Just ask the Quoits Section :)
