In November 2017 Council published the first Strategic
Growth Plan for Derry and Strabane, the strategy which
will drive the transformation of the region up until 2032.
The strategy is the result of a major public engagement
campaign to gauge local people’s views on how best
to achieve positive change, and we hope to keep that
momentum alive with ongoing communication on our
progress. You can read more about this from Chief
Executive, John Kelpie, on page 23.
EveryBody Active 2020
Over the past three years, the Council has encouraged residents to get
‘more active more often’ as part of Sport NI’s ‘EveryBody Active 2020’
initiative. The four year programme aims to get people active through
physical activity. Each council area in NI received National Lottery funding
for the project.
The programme targets women and girls, people with disability, those
living in areas of social need, young people leaving education
and those retiring from work. EveryBody Active coaches run
activities which have included couch to 5k’s, walking groups
and chair-based exercise.
Nicola’s Life Changing
Journey at Foyle Arena
If you need a bit of motivation
to get started, Nicola Wilson,
a member of Foyle Arena,
is certain to inspire you to
achieve your goals!
“Thinking back on my early adult
years I spent most of my time on
some type of diet. I always felt
unhappy at how I looked and felt.
In October 2016 I decided it
was time for a change. I joined
a slimming world group and signed
up for an all-inclusive membership
at Foyle Arena. I began my journey
by attending zumba classes.
The gym has a range of equipment
available with a variety of cardio
Throughout the past few years
there has been a massive change
not only to my weight, body shape
and fitness levels, but my mental
health, confidence and self-image
have also been boosted. I now feel
Peace IV – Tourism Project:
Natural Connections
The PEACE IV Programme is an
EU funded programme designed
to support peace and reconciliation
in NI and the border region, running
until 2021. There are a number
of Council led projects under the
programme, including a Natural
Connections: Peace Tourism Project.
Part of this is the summer
animation ‘Walls Have Ears’
programme that aims to bring
alive the historic walls.
Another project being explored is
‘Peace Tourism’ packages to bring
tourists to our area. Many local
groups already work in this field –
tourist providers, community tourism
projects, diversity groups and
good relations facilitators.
This project has been supported
by the EU’s PEACE IV Programme,
managed by the Special EU
Programmes Body (SEUPB).
An Inclusive Strategic Growth Plan
for the Derry City and Strabane
District was launched in November
2017. Since then the Council has
already made significant progress
in delivering the strategy, which will
drive growth and prosperity across
the entire North West region.
Connect talks to Chief Executive,
John Kelpie, about the leading role
the Council is playing in making the
North West region better than ever.
John tell us what exactly the
Inclusive Strategic Growth Plan
means for our City and District?
Following an extensive period
of work with statutory and
community partners, citizens,
organisations and businesses,
our Inclusive Strategic Growth
Plan was launched. This plan
is a shared, long-term vision
to improve the social, economic
and environmental well-being
of our City and District.
What’s the main aim of the plan?
Our vision is a thriving, prosperous
and sustainable City and District
with equality of opportunity for all.
The plan also addresses
the challenges and opportunities
that this area faces within
the short to medium term.
So how will we see the plan
being rolled out?
There’s a massive amount of work
taking place behind the scenes.
We are working very closely with
partners such as Invest NI, Ulster
University and North West Regional
College. In fact, around 500 people
are currently working on the
implementation of the plan,
through our various partnerships.
Key projects have really been
progressing. In the past year
a business case has been developed
for a graduate entry Medical
School and overall expansion of the
University of Ulster at Magee; work
has started on plans to regenerate
Strabane town centre and Derry City
Centre; business cases have been
written to support the regeneration
of the Ebrington site; Fort George
is currently undergoing remediation
and soft market testing; work on
the A6 has commenced, as has work
on the €30m multi-modal transport
hub in the Waterside.
23
The Council has also been working
to secure a City Deal for the region.
Tell us about that?
Our City Deal Vision and Outline
Bid is a very detailed document
which outlines projects which
we firmly believe will transform
the Derry/ Londonderry and
Strabane area. The focus of
securing a City Deal is on the
investment priorities within the
Strategic Growth Plan.
The announcement by the
Chancellor in his autumn budget
statement that he is opening
negotiations for a City Deal
has been hugely significant.
So what happens next?
Since then, the Council has been
engaging with the Northern
Ireland Office and the Ministry
for Housing, Communities and
Local Government. We led a
delegation to London in September
where the City Deal Vision and
Outline Bid proposal was formally
submitted. We also hosted a hugely
successful City Region Economic
Summit where the focus on
securing a City Deal was
very much at the forefront.
In the months ahead we will be
working closely with our partners
on the next stage, submitting
detailed cases for each of our
catalyst projects.
For further information visit
www.growderrystrabane.com
How confident are you in
a successful bid?
I am confident that our partners will
work with us to successfully secure
a bid for this region in the future.
We have been working with our
regional partners in the business,
community and voluntary sector
and public bodies, as well as our
political representatives to get
their support.
We are building on the substantial
investment made by Council
to date and believe the City
Growth Deal will help deliver
on the overall objectives of the
Strategic Growth Plan, which
will have a transformational
effect, filtering into every
aspect of life here.
Chief Executive,
John Kelpie
recycled. Even an unused disposable
nappy is unsuitable for recycling due
to the range of various materials
used to manufacture them. In the UK
we currently only recycle around
50% of our glass bottles and jars!
Council attends 4th UK-China
Regional Leaders Summit
Last October the Council
led a delegation to a trade
mission in China, as part of
the Council’s commitment
to inward investment as set
out in the Strategic Growth Plan.
The visit acted as a platform
to profile the North West region
and gain an insight into the
Chinese economy and culture.
Links with China are hugely
important for expanding business,
tourism and education connections,
with the signing of ‘Memorandum
of Understanding’ between the
North West Regional College
and Dalian College also taking
place during the visit.
US investment team visit
A high-level inward investment
team from the State of Pennsylvania
and the City of Philadelphia visited
Derry, Strabane and Inishowen
last October.
The team met international investors
and local businesses. Some local
companies who already export
to the US, also attended.
They later spent time at the North
West Regional College and Ulster
University Magee campuses.
The visit was held just weeks
ahead of a trade mission to
Boston/Philadelphia.
Linking with London
A high level Derry~Londonderry
City Region Economic Summit
took place in September, focusing
on developing business, education
and investment links between
Derry and London.
The focus was on positive
collaborative work being done
with the City of London to
promote Derry~Londonderry
as a great place to do business.
The purpose of the event was
to deliver key objectives set out
in the Strategic Growth Plan and
look at opportunities to build
upon and strengthen engagement
between the two areas.
