Shack Youth Foundation, announced<br />

that the foundation’s board of trustees<br />

recently awarded more than<br />

$41,600 to 31 area schools and<br />

organizations that provide healthand-fitness<br />

education and encourage<br />

young people to participate in<br />

a wide range of sports and fitnessrelated<br />

activities in Brevard, Orange,<br />

Osceola and Seminole counties.<br />

The funds were given out based on<br />

grants that were submitted from each<br />

organization, with a detailed explanation<br />

of their fitness programs and<br />

the youth the programs support.<br />

The most recent Southwest-area<br />

grant recipients and their programs<br />

include Spring Lake Elementary,<br />

Spring Lake Road Runners; Ocoee<br />

High School, boys and girls track<br />

teams; and Windermere High,<br />

girls flag football.<br />

Orlando City SC signed defender<br />

Alex De John to a oneyear<br />

contract before the 2019 Major<br />

SOUTHWEST SPORTS<br />

League Soccer season. De John is<br />

returning to the states after six seasons<br />

playing overseas for top clubs<br />

in Norway, Sweden and Finland.<br />

Southwest residents Glenn Baker,<br />

Kevin Curley, Dave Heffernan<br />

and Lucky Meisenheimer traveled<br />

to Tampa Bay to compete in<br />

the Navy Seal Foundation 5K<br />

Frogman Swim. The men won the<br />

60-69 age group and finished fifth<br />

overall out of 150 swimmers.<br />

These locals also co-hosted the<br />

Navy Seal Foundation Lucky’s<br />

Lake Frogman Night Ops<br />

5K Swim, a World Open Water<br />

Swimming Association-sanctioned<br />

event that was conducted as a virtual<br />

night swim associated with the Tampa<br />

Bay Frogman Swim. The nationwide<br />

Frogman Swim series has raised<br />

more than $500,000 for the Navy<br />
