GLOBAL STUDIES (required)

Our Core Course (three credits) is required of all students

and provides a broad and comparative exploration of our interconnected

and interdependent world. The course integrates three core themes:

Port Country Discovery, Intercultural Communications and Oceans and

Sustainability. The interweaving of these three themes provides insights

into the countries and people along the voyage. The course enhances

understanding of an individual’s role in the world as a knowledgeable,

inspired, and engaged citizen.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Our Academic Mission

Academic programming on Semester at Sea promotes a global, hands-on,

comparative approach that connects clearly articulated learning outcomes

with faculty expertise for each voyage itinerary. Students disembark from

their voyage with:

• A deeper self-knowledge, self-confidence, and autonomy.

• Critical thinking abilities and appreciation of multiple points of view.

• An awareness of human impact on our global environment and

opportunities for environmental stewardship.

• A deeper understanding of globalization, regionalism, nationalism,

ethnicity, and the interdependence among people, cultures, and countries.

Our Academic Partner

Colorado State University (CSU), serves as the academic partner to

Semester at Sea. CSU is a Carnegie Research 1 University and fully

accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. CSU provides academic

oversight that reinforces the quality of course instruction. Semester at Sea

students receive CSU transcripts upon the successful completion of voyage

courses, which ensure their academic experience is highly regarded and

easily transferable to their home institutions.
