During construction, there
will be some minor traffic
disruptions along Norman Kirk
Drive. However, temporary
traffic management will be put
in place.
There will be also
be minor delays and
no on-street parking
along some sections
of Norman Kirk Drive
during the work.
Closer to the time
of the disruptions, the
district council said it
will provide more public
information about
temporary traffic management
through ‘Council Call’ in the
Selwyn Times, at www.selwyn.
govt.nz/ and on its Facebook
page.
The construction of the car
parks may also cause minor
noise and vibrations. The district
council said depending on
weather, there may be some dust
produced as a result of the work.
Work has started
on a park and ride
facility in Rolleston
council building.
Bid to ease car parking
congestion in Rolleston
However, dust control measures
have been put in place.
The work was set out in the
2018-2028 Long Term Plan
as part of the extension and
reconfiguration of the district
council building.
The district council
allocated $700,000 for
the project when it set
the Long Term Plan last
year. It’s expected to be
ready by May, depending
on the weather.
The district council
has previously stated
David Ward that parking has become
an issue in Rolleston due
to the town’s booming population.
It is currently working on a
parking strategy to permanently
ease congestion in Rolleston and
Lincoln.
Public consultation on the
district council’s draft parking
strategy closed in December and
public hearings are expected to
start in the first half of this year.
Few stubble burn permits
• By Anan Zaki
FEDERATED Farmers is
concerned that only 36 farmers
across the district have applied
for stubble burn permits.
In new rules announced last
July, Selwyn farmers will have
to apply for permits to burn
stubble during restricted fire
seasons– a first for the district.
Federated
Farmers north
Canterbury
arable vice
chair Roscoe
Taggart said
the statistics
from Thursday
were a “real
Roscoe
Taggart
worry.”
Fire and
Emergency
New Zealand
declared a restricted fire season
in Selwyn, Christchurch and
the Waimakariri districts last
Tuesday.
“There are certainly more
arable farmers than that [36] in
Selwyn,” Mr Taggart said.
“Potentially with the new
permitting system maybe a few
farmers are putting it in the toohard
basket.”
Applying for a permit would
NEW RULES: Permits give Fire and Emergency New Zealand
the ability to contact the people who are burning if the
weather conditions are not ideal.
only take 15 minutes online, Mr
Taggart said.
“I certainly thought more
people would be on board with
it, because a lot of people still
burn.”
Meanwhile, only four
permits had been granted in
Waimakariri and Christchurch
as of last Thursday.
Mr Taggart says that could be
because of “significantly less”
arable farms in the
Waimakariri and
Christchurch areas compared to
Selwyn.
“But there’s definitely
more than four arable
farms [in Christchurch and
Waimakariri],” he said.
“People are potentially not
being forward thinking enough.
I think people need to be more
onto it.”
